What would your ideal permaculture / food forest design software look like?
À quoi ressemblerait votre logiciel idéal de conception de permaculture / de forêt nourricière ?
why to much downvote?

I have 50 trees in 5 gallon buckets that can't be planted till spring, how do I keep the roots from freezing? I don't have anywhere I can bring them out of the weather, but have a big open space I can assemble them however I want. I'm in WV, so low winter temps get down sub-0*F at night sometimes.

Repost as reddit removed it after I edited the post to include the direct link to the f*ndraiser. Trying again...
Hey all, I posted a two years ago about a petition to save the Dartington forest garden (https://www.reddit.com/r/forestgardening/comments/1jcok7n/stop_the_destruction_of_the_worldrenowned/). The trust has now agreed to sell the land to Martin and he's currently crowd sourcing to raise the cash to buy it.
His forest garden (and subsequent books and research based on it) really are a pivotal piece of work in temperate forest gardens and it would be a travesty if it wasn't kept. Posting it here to try and get word of the appeal out and hoping people will distribute to their own networks.
I'd very much like to post on /Permaculture, but the sub doesn't allow fundraising posts :P.

Many thanks, Jules

Planning a mix of wild species alongside fruit trees and nuts on the same plot. I know some species are bad neighbors (allelopathy, competition, shared pests/diseases). How do you actually research this before planting - is there a good resource, or is it mostly trial and error / local knowledge?
My site: western Ukraine, temperate climate, forest zone, flat terrain. Plot was cultivated until about 10 years ago and has been an overgrown field since - oak, walnut, and wild plum are already self-seeding there. Surrounded by open fields for several kilometers, so wind is a real issue (planning windbreak trees on the north/east side first).
Species I'm hoping to combine:
Wild/native: pine, maple (field, Tatar, box elder), oak, linden, rowan
Fruit: apple, sweet cherry, apricot, sour cherry
Nuts: hazelnut, walnut
Berries: raspberry, blackberry
Nitrogen fixer: Caragana arborescens (Siberian pea shrub)
Curious if anyone sees obvious conflicts in this mix, or good pairings I should lean into.

Hey fellow forest gardeners. I’m looking for a database(s) of publicly available forest gardens in North America, and by extension Europe. For the USA, I’m aware of NCAT but are wondering if there are others, any info would be appreciated!

Planting Tips on a Carpinus orientalis.
I live in the mediteranean region, zone 8b,
I want to plant this tree as a standalone tree on my 200 m2 front yard. On a corner, 4 meter from the neigbours.
Wanted some shade to have a table outside. An umbrella shape one would be perfect. Don’t neet one one that gets too large
The AI have some information, but just want information from people with experience on this one.
How big will this tree get ? how fast will it get?
does it provide a good amount of shade consider the mediteranean scorching sun.
Any suggestions ?

Good news story!!
I’ve been reforesting a 40 acre meadow a few trees at a time.
Most trees do well but I lose some to rodents or deer browsing. Three oak trees were munched over the winter - only a small dry stick was left (see second photo.. I kept checking but gave up, assuming they were dead. I checked them yesterday and two have sprouted new leaders and are doing very well.
Made me smile!

I'm planning on converting this gravel construction road to a "living road." It isn't a high traffic area, but does get driven on weekly and is prone to erosion. Does anyone have suggestions for durable groundcover that can handle being driven on occasionally and will help with erosion control?
I'm located in the Ozarks in NW Arkansas in a mixed hardwood forest.

Does it result in trees being cut down? Changing the landscape to evict critters from their homes? Introducing pesticides and fertilizers to forest ecosystems?
Every gardener likes to talk about what they do to get results. With a responsible gardening community, there needs to be honest conversations to acknowledge the environmental impact if gardening, techniques, chemicals, etc...
If this question upsets you or is against the rules, then I dont think we cab be considered to truly care about the land we manipulate for our use.

I have a big silver maple tree with the “helicopter seeds”. I want to start another tree. When is the best time to plant one of these seeds. Should I plant multiple in one pot?
