General Updating Rule #2 To Include The Sharing Of AI Assisted Apps/Websites/Services.

AI generated content posted within /r/amateurradio has been banned for quite some time now and has been discussed here. People come here to interact with other humans. Not with AI. This rule has been in place for a year now.

We initially allowed "vibecoded" apps/websites/services to be shared when this rule was changed because we felt it could be beneficial to the community as amateur radio is about tinkering and experimentation.

However, with the amount of apps/websites/services that were coded with AI or with the assistance of AI being shared here in /r/amateurradio, it has been concerning for many subscribers. Some good points were made and moderation agrees with some of those points. However, we don't want to get in the way of progress and felt that there are AI created/assisted apps that are very beneficial to the community and should be shared/discussed. We decided to amend rule #2 to include the following.

Promotion of websites, apps, or services that were developed partially or completely by AI is not allowed

Unless it's open source (with appropriate OSI-approved license) and has more than three months of active source control history. If less than three months of source control history is shown, then moderators may (at their sole discretion) approve the post if the project has significant adoption by or impact upon the amateur radio community

Moderation feels that this is the best course of action in response from the community. It prevents people from just shoving out stuff they vibecoded the night before but allows for those apps that gain traction a chance to be shared.

HOMEBREW Happy Friday everyone!

Post image
62 Upvotes

Spent evening time this week making and experimenting with a foldable 2m/70cm dipole antenna for my backpack, to work with the handheld radio.

I like having my radio on while out and about but it’s embarrassing when I’m around people and it starts talking. I have to take my backpack off to reach and turn it off. With this I’ll mount the radio to my shoulder strap where I can reach it and the antenna can be behind me out of the way.

I’m surrounded on all sides by hills, trains, city, buildings. I’m in a hole at sea level … even with all the stuff in the way I was able to hit a repeater 10 miles inland with great signal report on UHF. Spoke about mythbusters with a couple people.

Now I can put it all in an enclosure and mount it to the backpack.

Radio technology is everywhere around us. Incredible. The world communicates on it.

What an amazing hobby!

General Looked at an experimental radio grant with erp measured in picowatts

Why is picowatts even considered? Does one need a license to touch a coin that has been sitting in the sunlight- to turn on a fan?

General Testing today. I have passed my last 10 practice exams on HamStudy. Feel pretty good about it. Entire process took about 3 weeks from getting FCN to now. I dragged my feet abit also. Hoping to have Call Sign issued by end of next week.

EQUIPMENT Gear Doesn't Matter- Get Out There!

Hey! I wanted to make a point about something that has been bothering me about parts of the community that I have encountered.

I am a college student, and as such, have college student money. I was able to piece together a used Xiegu G90 and made myself a 40 meter EFHW, which I throw over a tree with an arborists weight on my college campus in Vermont. With such a setup on only 20 watts, I was told it wasn't worth starting out because I would quickly get discouraged. On the contrary, I am regularly making 1000+ mile QSLs, and have even gotten clear across to Europe on voice, on a day where the noise floor was a S4. (Vermont to Spain, 54 both ways). I am 2/3 of the way through Worked All States. I went out to do a POTA activation, and made over 100 contacts in two hours. Whenever people criticize your Baofeng or Quansheng or TID Radio, or tell you that 20 watts voice simply isn't enough, ignore them! This hobby is about experimentation and DIY, not about who can throw the most money at squeezing another 1db out of their setup. Get out there! Do a SOTA activation with a Baofeng, operate at 5 watts voice, experiment! Don't let the people pushing 1500 watts on 7.200 discourage you.

I hope to hear you all on the air sometime!

General TCIdigi 0.28 is up with a bunch of fixes and improvements

Post image
13 Upvotes

0.28 is up, will build clean for linux now a dmg is up for Mac users

TCIdigi is a forked fldigi designed in Qt6 and works specifically for SDR radios using TCI for both audio and CAT.

I've added QRZ logging, eQSL.cc logging, cleaned up the interface, added a font color chooser for TX/RX fonts.

Several bugs that caused crashes on exit and in other conditions have been patched.

My tree builds fldigi, flarq and TCIdigi, the fldigi is also TCI patched and also has had QRZ logging added to it.

All patches have been pushed in merge requests to the upstream as well.

Anyone trying it, please ping back as I have limited systems to test on and few friends that run digi modes.

The app is here -> https://sourceforge.net/projects/tcidigi/

**Update

I bumped to 0.29 now and the dmg will support Mac OS 26.0 and newer now, it was only built for 27.0 in prior releases.

EQUIPMENT Finalized my POTA / go-box today

Thumbnail

Originally planned for POTA, grew it a bit to cover more and be an emergency go-box as well. No drilling outside the box to keep it weather-tight.

  1. Case: Apache 4800
  2. HF radio: Xiegu G90 with H1 cooling fan stand and DE-19 data interface for data modes
  3. Dual band radio: Radioddity DB-25D. 20 watt limit, but small package that allows dual band, DMR, and covers MURS and GMRS frequencies as well for emergencies.
  4. Power supply: Eco Worthy 12v 10Ah battery
  5. Ports: USB 3.0 x2, USB-c, Voltmeter, cigarette lighter socket, dual powerpole port for charging and powering external devices if needed.
  6. Light: generic RV LED light with red light for night mode.
  7. Pouches: Velcro pouches for cables, coax, throw line, N9TAX dual band antenna and a Spooltenna EFHW antenna
  8. Mic hooks: Lido mount hooks.

Roast away!

Edit: I should give credit to Mike Dahlhofer K8MRD. He has a YouTube video building a box for the G90 that was the base and inspiration for this build.

QUESTION Absurd amounts of static

I’m trying to get my home shack set up. Yaesu FT-891 transceiver with the FC-50 tuner, Linear power supply, EFHW antenna. The amount of static I was getting was insane. I could sometimes get garbled audio through the radio, but it was so drowned out my ambient noise that it didn’t even recognize it was receiving.

I set the power to 1watt in case I accidentally transmitted, unplugged the antenna. Static goes down from being drowned out with the squelch at S9+ to S5. Progress, my antenna setup is compromised in some way. I can fix that. Probably. Maybe.

But I wanted to see if I could get it down any further. After much headache, I literally turned off every breaker in my house except the one that powers the outlet to my power supply(I don’t have a battery) and unplugged everything else in the outlets that still had power. Zero change, still S5.

The radio, power supply, and tuner are all bonded to a copper bus bar mounted to the wall via 1” copper flat strap. The bus bar is bonded to a common grounding plate outside the window with 2” flat strap. That is grounded to a dedicated ground 8’ ground rod with more 2” flat strap. The rod is bonded to house ground rod with 6awg wire. It’s a fair length of flat strap to the rod, the only place I have room for the shack is on the 2nd floor.

Is S5 as good as it gets for me assuming I can get the antenna set up better? Am I stuck doing portable ops until I move to a new place?

Edit: I did this test on 10m, 20m, and 40m. 40m was a little higher, but that makes sense since I did this during the daytime. Also: is there a specific antenna that can block out ambient noise? I’ve heard good things about mag loops.

General Setting up my first mast. I need help!

So im not actually using the mast for ham radio but it is a heavy duty 12m radio mast that i am using. I need to suspend a small environmental monitor 8m high, which im planning to do with the mast. My question is how far away do the guy lines need to be from the mast and how big/deep do the pegs/ground anchors need to be? The mast will have some form of tripod but the mast needs to stay up for atleast a month so i cant rely on that alone. I also cant secure it to anything.

Any help or guidance is much appreciated.
