Mod Message Please report solicitation via DMs

Hi everyone,

Just a reminder that rule #2 of the sub disallows solicitation, not only in the sub itself but also via DM. If someone DMs you to solicit business, please message the mods and attach the text and source of the DM!

Rule #2 is the most common rule broken on r/solar, and the mods spend considerable time trying to stay on top of it in the sub itself. However we don’t have visibility into DMs, so need your help to control it there.

Thanks!

Advice Wtd / Project Tired of power outages, what's the go to for battery backup these days

I live in an area of Southern California that is prone to outages every year during red flag days. This latest out power has been out for over 24 hours and we're expected to not have it restored for another day. I'm looking for recommendations for a backup system. We have solar already but no backup (I was cheap when i got the solar system 5 years ago and am kicking myself). Any recommendations more than welcome.

Discussion Did You Own SolarEdge ($SEDG) During Its 40%+ Stock Drop? Investor Settlement Update

Hey guys, if you missed it, SolarEdge ($SEDG) agreed to a $55M settlement with investors over claims that it misled the market about weakening demand in Europe and rising inventory. Late claims are still being considered, even though the deadline has passed.

Quick recap: In 2023, SolarEdge continued saying European demand was strong while inventory was building. In August, 2023, the company disclosed excess inventory and slower growth, sending $SEDG down 18.3%. In October, it disclosed unexpected cancellations, and the stock fell another 27.2%.

If you invested in $SEDG in 2023, you can still check the details and submit a late claim here.
Did anyone here hold $SEDG during that period?

Discussion Sunrun gave me the ick

I bought a new build construction house a few years back and unfortunately Sunrun was their solar provided, which I guess solar is required for new construction under CA law?

Anyway, it actually works out fine but after two years, I get a call from them and pick up knowing they run our solar. The guy tells me he’s getting reports from our community that there may be something wrong with the solar and that it may not be generating enough electricity based on the specs and asked us what we were paying for electricity (solar doesn’t generate enough to cover the entire usage). I don’t know much about solar since it came with the house and naively kept talking to him. Anyway, he said he’d call back with a specialist to help diagnose our issue… the specialist calls, I look the guy up on LinkedIn, and he’s a senior sales rep.

I tell them to fuck off and they’ve left me alone since. Until 2 days ago, I’m back to getting calls flagged as Sunrun. I block the numbers but there must be some desperate attempt again to get more sales? Are they running out of $$?

News / Blog PG&E SHARE just launched, who here is getting paid from VPP

PG&E rolled out SHARE last week and I'm trying to figure out if this changes the battery math for me. 9.6kW array in the east bay, NEM 3.0.

From what I can tell there's Tesla VPP paying $2/kWh during grid emergencies, DSGS paying about $350/summer per battery, ELRP on top of that, and now SHARE. I have an anker e10 not a Powerwall so I don't know which of these I'm even eligible for, the Tesla one obviously requires a Powerwall but ELRP and DSGS might be open to other brands through aggregators.

If the VPP income stacks on top of TOU savings that could cut payback to under 3 years. Has anyone here actually gotten paid from any of these.

Advice Wtd / Project Battery Suggestion for 100 watt Renogy panel

I have a cabin out of state that I only get to every few months. The shed that my ATV is in there has a 100 watt solar panel on the roof facing south, with a Renogy Bluetooth controller inside (currently not set up/ connected). I would like to get a proper battery so that I can complete this system and be able to keep my ATV plugged into a battery tender year round.

The battery tender is 1 amp. I also have a 140 watt mini inverter. Would the Renogy 100 aH battery be enough? Is my 100 watt panel even enough or do I need more? Alternatively, is there a more practical setup to accomplish my single goal?

Advice Wtd / Project Inverter Repair

Just finished replacing a self-installed 11.4kw HD Wave inverter after a pretty snappy RMA.

Could any of you shed light on the chance of repairing the old one?

Is there a common failure point in these inverters that I should know about? Have any of you succeeded in repairing one? Do they lock out the old serial number after an RMA?

I have an e-waste recycle point, but throwing the old one away is painful. My record with electronics repair is not great, but I do have some experience.

Advice Wtd / Project "Balcony" solar

NEM 2, Ca, SCE. 7.wkw system with a powerwall 3. I'd like to add more battery capacity and was wondering if adding battery with a balcony solar inverter would let me add battery capacity to help make it through a full night without having to shut gear down in the house.

Overnight my house uses about 500w and by the time my solar starts producing, I'm hovering around 15% on the powerwall. That feels too close for comfort.

what are some options that won't burn my house down?

Discussion Solar Installation in Pennsauken, NJ

Hey everyone,

I recently got a offer for a solar installer position in Pennsauken, NJ.

The pay is $23/hour, but they don’t guarantee 40 hours per week.

My wife and I are planning to rent an apartment in Philadelphia. We have limited savings, so I’m worried about inconsistent hours, especially during the fall and winter when solar work might slow down.

For anyone familiar with the residential solar industry in the Philly/NJ area:

How many hours per week can I realistically expect during fall and winter?
Does work slow down significantly in the colder months?

I’d really appreciate any advice, especially from people who work in solar installation in Pennsylvania or New Jersey.

Discussion Solaredge customer with installer app login

I need help changing the inverter so that it recognizes the built in wifi antenna instead of the cell card. I already did the changes but cannot make the simple switch because I need an installer. All the installers I am finding are charging 200 dollars and above and I cannot justify paying that just to go in the app and switch something. If you have a login can we work something out? I just need to change that. Any one that can help?

Discussion Consumer Advocacy Groups for arbitration like Solar Equity Solutions, Solar Cancellation Resource Center, etc

has anyone actually gone ahead with any of these consumer advocacy groups that claim to either get your contract canceled or get it significantly reduced?

I spoke to someone from solar equity solutions and they said that if they don’t get the contract canceled initially then they typically get it reduced to $.10-$.20 on the dollar which would be phenomenal

But I cannot find any independent review reviews or feedback on these types of groups to determine if they’re actually legit.

and I’m not sure if that’s just due to the arbitration taking anywhere from 12 to 18 months so people don’t have any feedback yet.

Because I’m not trying to sue Sunnova at this point, but go to arbitration with representation to either have the contract canceled or to reach a settlement so I’m not paying the full amount of the contract. Because even paying 20 grand is better than paying 45 grand, which is what is remaining.

But I’m just curious if anybody has actually utilized any of these groups and what their experience was.

Discussion Solar for a backyard camper: power station or built-in battery setup?

We have a travel trailer permanently parked in the backyard, and lately it gets more use than our living room. I work from the dinette a couple mornings a week. On weekends we take snacks out there and watch a movie with the kids. There’s something about being outside the house without actually going anywhere.

Right now it runs off a 30A hookup from the house. I’m thinking about putting roughly 1kW of panels on a small ground rack beside the trailer, where there’s less shade than on its roof. Mainly to cover the little electric fridge, my laptop and monitor during the day, and a couple hours of TV at night. The rooftop AC would stay on the house hookup.

I’ve been looking at the Jackery Explorer 5000 Plus and EcoFlow’s newly announced TITAN 5000. The TITAN’s 5kWh starting capacity and option to add batteries later caught my attention. A friend has an older EcoFlow and says it’s been pretty solid, but he hasn’t used the TITAN, so I’d still want to hear more before choosing either one.

The trailer still has its original lead-acid battery for the 12V lights and water pump. Would you keep that and use a separate solar power station for the fridge and outlets, or put the money into lithium batteries, an inverter and a solar controller inside the trailer? For something that never leaves the yard, does the built-in route have an advantage I’m missing? Also interested if anyone’s used the Jackery this way or looked into the TITAN for a similar setup.

Advice Wtd / Project I cannot get any help from my solar company Powur PBC

The company I paid to install my system is in California. They are apparently still in business, but they no longer have a phone number, and the chat is impossible to get results. I have a warranty repair ticket i opened in June 2026, and there have been many lies and deflections. I even paid a $300 "deposit" for the repair, and they even opened a workorder with a local company to repair, but failed to pay them, so they canceled the appointment. Powur PBC is the company. I need help!

Discussion California solar, adding panels/batteries/car charger upgrades.

I'm getting conflicted answer is about expanding your solar system in the future by adding more batteries more panels or a car charger.

How does this affect PG&e and does this require permitting?

If we set a limit on the hybrid inverter to export a maximum amount that is defined in our agreement, extra batteries or extra panels would not affect this right?

If we're not replacing our main panel and adding a level two car charger that shouldn't also affect our existing agreement right?

I know the city wants a cut and a permit for everything you do at your house even if you just change a light switch. how do people upgrade their solar systems? Do they need to notify everyone and get new permits?

Discussion Enphase microinverter fail 2 years post installation

Hi folks, I was just curious: how common is it for an enphase micro inverter to fail 2 (edited: 3) years after installation? Should I be prepared for more failures now?

For additional context: There was no weather event involved. Enphase didn't give me any issues sending a replacement.

Advice Wtd / Project Propel/concert battery grid management clause

I'm reviewing the contract for Propel/concert financing my solar system (planning to pay it off on day 10 - the earliest possible) and noticed the following under the energy storage system section:

"We control the Energy Storage System (if included) and we may enroll the System in one or more energy or grid management program"..."The availability of power from the Energy Storage System, if any, could be limited by participation in “demand response” and similar programs. You will not receive additional consideration under this Agreement in respect to such enrollment."

Basically, it sounds like they can force you into discharging your batteries during grid events like virtual power plant. My installer said no one has had an issue with this yet, but it's still only months into this deal. Is anyone else concerned?

Advice Wtd / Project Does this device exist?

Does this device exist? If so who makes it or the components: -plugs into a 240V 14-40R receptacle -has a 6-10 kWh battery -has a battery management system that allows me to charge from my solar panels from 10am to 2pm and run my 2.5 kW heat pump from 4pm to 9pm -can run my house during a power outage -does NOT have any 240/120V or USB outlets
