Gear question What are they thinking, Z mount 600 mm F4 TC

The lack of a proper lens cap is insane to me - a $15,000 lens that doesn’t take filters for protection and the soft cap that comes with it falls off and is a pain to carry, has anyone come up with a good solution here?

Edit: for the third party filters, has anyone noticed a degradation in autofocus?

I’m in a tricky spot because I’ll primarily use this at the beach to shoot surf and it’s just a guarantee that the lens front eventually gets covered in salt, it was fine when I put a filter in front and cleaned it regularly but I don’t want to touch the front element of a $15,000 lens.

Any ideas for cleaning?

Gear question Beginner - Got a new strap. Is it okay to connect like this? Any other suggestions?

Hi Nikoneers,

I just got this lovely AF-S 70-200 VRII for my new setup (D780), and upgraded my strap to the PeakDesign Slide. I was wondering if it’s okay/safe to strap this setup like this, and if not, what is your preference/recommendation. Please note that the lens did not come with the tripod foot.

Thanks for your time. Happy photographing! :)

edit: grammar.

Edit 2: Thanks a lot everyone for the fantastic responses. Aside from a handful of people who were concerned, majority of people saw no problem with this technique. Of course to each their own, and I do hope the concerned people are not correct and my setup doesn’t snap in the middle! :D I am going to go with this, except to rotate the lens mount by 180 degrees so that the camera lens is facing backwards when I have it on my shoulder. I’ll be testing it tomorrow at the local zoo! :)

What should I buy? Just how much better is the AF-S 200-500 than the Sigma 150-600 contemporary really?

Yeah yeah, the classical comparison between the most popular budget super tele lens, I know, there are hundreds of reviews. And after spending the past weeks reading everything I still can’t make up my mind, I hope posting here can be the final push I need.

The general consensus is the sigma is soft at the long end and needs to use f8, which I very much want to avoid, the woods are dark enough as it is. For those who have used it, when shot wide open at 600,

- is the softness mostly only around the corners? Would it still be soft on a APS-C body since the corners will be cropped out anyway?

- how noticeable is the softness? Is it only apparent when really zoomed in, or is it clearly and unpleasantly soft, and you have to stop down to get a good photo?

And if you also have the Nikon 200-500, how noticeable is the difference without pixel peeping? Is there also a clear difference in AF performance? I’ll be shooting birds handheld most of the time.

If anyone have those lens willing to share some raw files shot wide open, that’d be EXTREMELY helpful. So far I was only able to find raw files shot with the sigma sport but not the c.

Hopefully this won’t count as a low effort post because I’ve spent so much time reading just to justify spending $100 extra😭

Photo Submission Decided on a D7500! Very happy so far!

After my last thread asking about camera choices to upgrade from my D5300, I ended up deciding on the D7500. Nikon refurb had them for $499 and the one I got had a shutter count of 4. I'm very pleased with the camera so far! Basically every complaint I had about my D5300 this one solves. Not enough dials for fast control, not enough shortcut keys to change things like auto focus settings or metering, not enough function buttons, etc. The usability is leaps and bounds ahead.

I'm still having a bit of soft focus issue and I can't quite nail focus on things, but I still need to run the fine tune with my lenses and likely could just be my cheap lenses as well but so far I think this camera will be exactly what I was looking for

All photos taken on the D7500 with a NIKKOR AF-S 55-200 f/4.8-5.6G VR II

What should I buy? Bridging the gap between F and Z?

Hi all,

I have a Z8. I really think it's amazing, I don't have many complaints about it. However, for about 2 years, I have been using more and more film cameras- mostly AI-s lenses, but a couple of AF-d and one or two G lenses.

I have an FTZ II adapter. It works well, but I don't know, the Z8 and a small F mount manual focus prime just feels like an odd combo to me.

I have been considering getting another camera to pair with these. I have been considering:

1) Keeping the Z8 and adding a Zf. This is probably the best option, but I don't know if financially it would be possible.

2) Selling the Z8 and buying a Zf instead. Maybe this would be a good option. But I worry I would feel a bit disappointed going from the Z8 to a Zf, even though I haven't been using the Z8 as much

3) Keeping the Z8 and adding a dSLR?

If I did get a Zf, would also appreciate any opinions if a different adapter might be better

Thanks all
