Feature Dear Apple: Please Stop Displaying New Air Drop Contacts at the Beginning of the List

Post image
174 Upvotes

It happened way too many times that I wanted to airdrop something and ended up accidentally clicking the wrong person, because new air drop options keep popping up at the beginning of the list, pushing every contact, that was loaded before, to the back.

I know this issue by now, so I keep waiting extra couple of seconds until I click on the desired device or contact, only for the menu to pop up another option the second I try to click on the contact that I want.

I've sent so much stuff to the wrong contacts, just because this feature works that way. It's really annoying and irritating, especially when the device or person I want to send something to shows up in the very beginning and I have to wait until the whole list is loaded, until I can finally, safely, click on who I want to send the file to.

Anyways, sorry for the quick rant. Not even sure if this is the right sub for this. But I'm sure some of you can relate.

Bug QA (GG) Dear Apple. Your QA is going south. Eating storage out of blue (dasd)

Got message that I am low on my 1TB storage. So I investigate and "Syste_m data" keeps growing for no reason. And there is no way for me to stop it from growing. Daisy disk cannot even reveal the responsible folder with administrative rights. I open Activity Monitor and there is dasd process with 1.26TB written. Killing it requires admin rights -> did it and the reclaimed space is 300GB back.

I don't mind visual glitches or hiccups but this wearing off hardware like this when SSDs are expensive is considered a serious bug.

Help Right then - how about "porting" / recompiling Aperture?

We're besieged by seemingly endless AI "I made" posts these days. I doubt all that many of these ports will have much longevity, once the author gets bored of the churn and the token cost of maintenance, but it's certainly interesting to see what can be done with the right models and prompts. Recompilation of entirely non-native games to native-with-shims is an impressive feat.

But sure, fine, that's all very nice and dandy but how about something truly, genuinely useful? For many years now my photo collection has languished - raw files, sometimes processed to TIFFs, but nothing exported to a final "mastered" JPEG. Why? Because I never found anything, to this day, that was remotely as good as Aperture.

Now that would be quite something to get working on Apple Silicon.

Help MacBook Air M4 becomes extremely laggy after macOS 27.0.0 update, now at 27.0.1

Hey everyone,

I'm using a MacBook Air M4, and ever since updating to macOS 27.0.1, I've been experiencing some really bad lag after using the Mac for a while.

Switching browser tabs, opening new tabs, typing, and even taking screenshots become extremely slow. Sometimes the only thing that helps is restarting the Mac. It works fine for a while, but the issue eventually returns.

I checked Activity Monitor and noticed Control Centre using around 50–52% CPU while the Mac was lagging.

After restarting, here's what Activity Monitor showed:

  • Control Centre: 13.6% CPU
  • Brave Browser: 3.3% CPU
  • Brave Browser Helper (Renderer): 4.6% CPU
  • MenuBarAgent: 3.5% CPU
  • Overall CPU idle: 92.36%

I also generated a sample report for Control Centre, which showed repeated activity involving sensor indicators and entity resolution.

Has anyone else experienced something similar on macOS 27, especially on an M-series Mac? Could this be an OS bug, or is there something else I should investigate?

It was working fine until the update. Restart fixes all the issues. But prolonged usage after restarting slowly leads to the same issue.

Sometimes, quitting all the applications can also lead to fixing the issue but again the same thing resurfaces after a while.

Any help would be appreciated!

P.S. Used AI to generate the message.

Tips & Guides PSA: on macOS 27, "defaults write com.apple.screencapture location" no longer changes where screenshots are saved

Most guides (and a lot of old scripts) still say to change the screenshot folder with:

defaults write com.apple.screencapture location ~/Pictures/Screenshots
killall SystemUIServer

On macOS 27 that runs without any error but does nothing: screenshots keep landing on the Desktop. The setting now lives under a different key, location-screenshot. Someone spotted this in a thread here earlier this month (https://www.reddit.com/r/MacOS/comments/1wxlecy/), so here is the full picture in one place.

Tested on macOS 27.0:

  • Only location-screenshot set: Shift-Command-3 saves to that folder.
  • Only location set: it still saves to the Desktop.
  • location-last is just the folder remembered in the Shift-Command-5 Options menu, not the active save location.

To set a folder:

mkdir -p ~/Pictures/Screenshots
defaults write com.apple.screencapture location-screenshot -string ~/Pictures/Screenshots
killall SystemUIServer

To go back to the Desktop:

defaults delete com.apple.screencapture location-screenshot
killall SystemUIServer

If your script runs on Macs with different macOS versions, write both keys. Older versions read location and ignore the new one.

Help macOS Sonoma 14.8.9 update causing 2018 MacBook air to be stuck on Apple logo at boot

Thumbnail

So, straight to the point:

- Microsoft Bootcamp works, so it doesn't look like a hardware issue

- there is no progress bar on the stuck screen

- I already tried Disk Utility in Recovery Mode and ran First Aid on all volumes and containers after showing all devices

- Trying to reinstall macOS took a long time before showing this error: "The operation couldn't be completed (PKDownloadError error 8)", and after that, trying to reinstall macOS says there isn't enough disk space

- mounting the 'Macintosh HD - Data" drive and accessing it from the terminal doesn't show the files I'm supposed to have, as the user folder only has `/Users/Shared` available and I can't see my actual user folder

- the timezone is reset to UTC in the `date` command's output and I already used `sntp`. Setting the TZ Environment variable to `Africa/Cairo` didn't charge the output, but considering I ran `sntp`, the UTC time should be correct.

I can't think of anything else to do, and I'd really love it if someone could respond in a timely manner, thanks in advance.

I'm usually a Linux user, so I'm not used to macOS or not having the same level of debugging power, but it's the laptop of a friend of mine and I want to fix it

Edit: it's a 2019 MacBook air, not 2018

Bug MacBookPro Trackpad stops working after using the Eyedropper tool in PowerPoint

When I use the Eyedropper tool in PowerPoint to pick a color, the trackpad becomes unresponsive and stops registering clicks. The only way to resolve this is by restarting the computer. I have tried various methods to prevent this from happening, but the issue persists. I’m wondering if anyone else has encountered the same problem.
Troubleshooting steps I’ve tried:
1. Putting the computer to sleep and then waking it up.
2. Adjusting trackpad settings.
3. Force-quitting PowerPoint.
Steps taken with an Apple Advisor:
1. Testing in Safe Mode (the issue still occurred).
2. Testing with a newly created user account (the issue still occurred).
The final solution suggested by the Advisor: Reinstall the operating system.
---
I plan to visit an Apple Store tomorrow to test this on one of their display units:
1. Create a new PowerPoint presentation and use the Eyedropper tool.
2. Save the file, reopen it, and then use the Eyedropper tool again.

Bug iMessage pictures fail to load in MacOS 27.0.1

Does anyone else's pictures fail to load in iMessage chat? Particularly when you've received pictures already by using your iPhone and then they fail to load in iMessage on MacOS? It either goes on a constant loading loop or it (eventually) says "photo failed to send". It only happens to me when receiving pictures from my contacts. It's super frustrating and restarting, relogging/syncing iCloud hasn't fixed it for me. I appreciate any advice you guys have to fix this issue.

Help Using Siri as Tech support

So I’m doing a little image editing and I figured it was something Pixelmator would do pretty easily, I just didn’t know how (removing small random dots in white areas). I pulled up Siri AI on golden gate and asked. I kept getting answers that referred to nonexistent menus and options in Pixelmator. I suspect that those are options in Photoshop, but Siri kept hallucinating that they were also in Pixelmator.

I systematically went through each suggestion, pointing out to Siri that they didn’t exist in Pixelmator. Even uploading screenshots.

Final answer - select each errant pixel and manually paint over them.

Thanks a lot.

Help Microsoft exchange won’t sync with calendar

Hi everyone! My outlook exchange used to sync with my Apple calendar on my Mac, but suddenly it stopped and I have no idea why. It works fine on my phone. I keep trying to readd it back to my calendar, and I begin the sign-in process, it loads on a little box pop-out, then after a long delay I get a “we couldn’t sign you in. Please try again” message. It’s driving me nuts!! I’ve done everything— any tips?

Thank you!!

Help Help me to fix this software update issue

My MacOS 27.0 is not updating to 27.0.1

As you can see in 1st image, I am currently on 27.0 version (27GB) and to update to 27.0.1 version it is asking for 3.31GB. I have 15GB free space. So I can download it.

But after downloading, it goes to "preparing to install" and suddenly I get a popup message (see 2nd image). I am not able to install it.

After this pop up message, my Software update screen looks like the background in the 2nd image and now says it requires 30.5GB.

I even cleared up the space and downloaded the 30.5GB update. But I am again getting the same pop-up message.

Pls help me to fix this issue.

Bug [Bug] Battery settings timeline completely shifted / out of sync with system clock (macOS Golden Gate, MBA M1)

Post image
1 Upvotes

Anyone else experiencing a severe time shift in the Battery pane under System Settings?

As you can see in the screenshot:

  • My menu bar clock reads 06:40 AM.
  • Yet, the horizontal axis under "Last 24 Hours" abruptly stops at 21:00 (9 PM) from the previous night. The entire overnight period is missing.
  • On top of that, actual screen time from last evening (roughly 7 PM to 10 PM) ended up plotted between 8 AM and 1 PM yesterday morning (when the Mac was completely idle/unused).

I have checked date/time settings and everything is spot-on in Terminal (date reports accurate CEST time). Restarts, power controller resets, and clearing preference caches didn't fix it.

Seems like a pure SwiftUI/UI rendering desync where the graph scale fails to slide dynamically with the system clock.

Has anyone found a workaround, or are we just waiting for a patch from Apple?

Help Photos app: "Unknown error (0)" on export & editing locked after using Clean Up (macOS 27 Golden Gate)

Hi everyone,

Ran into an annoying issue with the Photos app.

After editing an image with the Clean Up tool and saving the changes, I can no longer export the photo — it immediately fails with "Unknown error (0)", and entering "Edit" mode again gets completely locked / blocked.

Oddly enough, it seems directly tied to the amount of edits:

  • If I only make a tiny tweak (e.g. removing one small spot), it saves and exports just fine.
  • If I do anything more substantial, it crashes the render pipeline and triggers this error.

I’ve tested this across multiple different photos with the exact same result (unmodified originals export without issues). The problem seems to have started after updating to macOS 27 Golden Gate; I never experienced this on earlier versions.

Has anyone found a fix or workaround for this?

Bug Whats wrong with my mac?

Hi guys.
So, when I use my mouse, a box randomly pops up that usually only appears when you right-click. I have uploaded an image in case anyone is confused. After that, I suddenly can't click anything with my cursor. The cursor moves perfectly fine, but clicking doesn't work at all. This has been happening repeatedly and it's getting annoying. After doing some research, I came across something called a "ghost mouse." I checked my Bluetooth settings and noticed an unknown mouse connected to my Mac. I have uploaded a screenshot of that as well. I'm wondering if the issue I've been experiencing with my Mac is related to this unknown mouse. If so, how can I disconnect or remove it? I am keeping my bluetooth off for now, but please give me some insight on how I can fix this.

Developer Saturday Sorting a messy folder takes forever, so I built a Mac app that cuts it to one key per file

• Upvotes

Cleaning up a folder in Finder isn't hard, it's just slow: click, Quick Look, decide, drag, rename, and again for every single file. That's where the time goes.

GetSpace shows one file at a time in a big preview, and you decide with one key:

- ← delete, → keep, ↓ skip

- R rename right on the card, M move to a folder

- A summary before anything happens, then deleted files go to the trash (never permanently)

In my own timed test (100 files: trash, move, rename, keep; two rounds, sets swapped, checked against an answer key) it took ~9 min in Finder and ~3.5 min in GetSpace on average. I built the app, so take that with a grain of salt.

- Runs locally, no account, no tracking

- macOS and Windows

- Free to try (200 files on day one, then 50 a day), Pro is a one-time purchase

https://getspace.site

Feedback welcome, especially on what still slows you down.

Tips & Guides Is it a good option to use my server as my second apps folder?

I have a linux server running at home and I have a lot of storage available there, on the other hand I have a Macbook air M1 with 256gb that I'm always struggling to have all of the apps and stuff I like to use (including games).

I was thinking about formatting one of my disks to a file system that is good for MacOS and use it as an extension of my mac storage just for dumb files (downloaded ones and documents) and also for applications that are a little heavier like some games.

Has anyone done anything like that before, what tips would you guys give to me if I want to do that?

Help Can you hide specific Dock icons on macOS?

Is there a way to hide some icons from the Dock on a Mac?

For example, when I’m sharing my screen I’d like to hide a few app icons so they aren’t visible, without quitting the apps or removing them from the Dock permanently.

Is this possible with built-in settings, or does it require a third-party app? Any suggestions are appreciated.

Help Computer keeps crashing

I’m pretty sure the problem is some faulty/outdated software that it’s trying to start up, but I can’t get into anything to turn it off or stop it running. I can log in, but no apps and the Horgan don’t show up just the background or a black screen with the application at the top right. Doing pretty much anything gives me the wheel of death. Looking for any help

I think this is a 2017 ish model I’m not compeltly sure. It was given to me by my parents. It hasn’t been booted up fully in probably 2 years so software wise I don’t know.

I had no issue syncing this file when it was around 95GB. What could be the issue?
