[EDIT:
I somehow started an AMA from my draft as I posted, and immediately ended it. Just in case anyone saw that, it was a mistake! 🤦♂️]
Since joining this subreddit I’ve already learned enough small tips about iOS to seriously alter the productivity and ease of access in my day to day use of my iphone. I’m genuinely surprised and grateful.
So, I am hoping to find a hidden gem to cure this frustration of mine: using the functions for selecting a word, selecting a group of characters, and the hellish “select all”.
It is frequently my experience that web content (like a pdf opened in Safari for example) allows no way to bring up the select all menu, and it is infuriating. I run into situations where I find myself pulling the text selection box slowly down a huge wall of text I need to copy. Sometimes that selection can even just go haywire and unselect. The rapid pressing for selection also causes me a lot of inaccuracy and frustration. Some other things seem intentionally clunky or illogical.
I’ll admit that some of the literally opposite ways of performing tasks between Apple / Mac and Android / PC style are uber annoying, BUT NOT hard to adapt to.
However, THIS overall quirky method of selecting text in iOS with rapid, precise clicks, cursor dragging and tapping un-intuitively to open standard menus has been my main source of angst for the year since switching from Android. I’ll admit the cracked screen doesn’t make it easier, but the design and seeming lack of any tutorials besides the nearly useless Tips app in iOS make me unhappy. This part of iOS is plainly awful.
I’m going to terminate here and ask my question:
Am I missing something? Does anyone have any tips or ideas to help improve the way this all works? Android selection is so intuitive and simple that the same function in iOS seems like an overthought and then intentionally minimized nightmare.

For Reference Only
It is my understanding that-
• double press (click) selects a group of characters / word
• triple press (click) selects a broader range of text / sentence or paragraph
• the spacebar (hold and slide) cursor is a precision cursor
locator (which is a saving grace)
• holding down a finger and sliding allows another smooth cursor locator, this one with a nice “loupe” magnifier.
— holding down over a word without sliding, an astonishingly useful way to select and raise menus in Android, does not have use.
• the paste and select menu is accessed by un-highlight any selected text and pressing /clicking any open cursor space next to any selectable character once, and then a second time (awkward IMO). Also appears when first clicking into an editable field from elsewhere.
• the “adjustable fence” style text selection highlight tool is surfaced by any of the three aforementioned methods.
• when text is selected, holding down and dragging from the selection allows you to move blocks of text within the page or move
• a ‘secret’ (not obvious to newbs/my former self) menu is opened by a 3 finger click on the text field and allows for a more robust cut / paste, undo / redo experience
