Discussion Switched from Android – why can’t iPhone keyboards (even Gboard) put the comma and question mark where Android does?
Moved to an iPhone 17 Pro Max recently and the keyboard is driving me nuts.
On Android I had the comma right next to the space bar on the main page. One tap, done. On iPhone there's no comma key on the main page. You either switch to the 123 page or use a hold-and-slide gesture.
Before anyone says it: yes, I know you can hold the full stop and slide to the comma, or press-and-slide from 123. I've tried them. They work, but that's not the point. I want a dedicated comma key on the main page, one tap, like Android has had forever.
The 123 page throws me off too. On Android, ? and ! sit right next to backspace, so my thumb just goes there. On iPhone the ? is stuck in the middle of the row, and I keep hitting the wrong key. Small thing, but it's years of muscle memory.
What gets me is Gboard. Same Google keyboard, but on iOS it copies Apple's layout. No comma key, no real number row, and the 123 page follows Apple's order too. SwiftKey at least has a number row, but still no comma.
And it's not an Apple restriction. Apple's dev docs say third-party keyboards can design their whole layout, so a comma key or Android's 123 order is totally doable.
So:
- Anyone found an iOS keyboard with a comma key on the main page and an Android-style 123 page (with decent autocorrect)?
- Has Google ever explained why Gboard on iOS is so different?
