Moderator Announcement “I Just Bought an Apple TV!” Megathread

Congratulations! You did it! You walked into a store (or went online) and saw that sleek little box, and said, “Yep. That’s the one.” Welcome to the Apple TV club.

To keep the main feed focused on news, updates, troubleshooting, and deeper discussion, all new Apple TV purchase posts belong in this megathread.

If you just bought one, this is the place to:

• Share your excitement

• Post your unboxing photo

• Ask setup questions

• Share first impressions

• Ask “Did I make the right choice?” (You most definitely did.)

Standalone “Just bought an Apple TV!” posts will be removed and redirected here. Not because we don’t love your excitement, but because we all love a clean, useful feed even more.

If you’re new, tell us:

• Which model did you get?

• What are you upgrading from?

• What TV/sound setup are you pairing it with?

• What apps are you installing first?

Congrats on the upgrade and welcome to the family!

Note: if you’re having a specific technical issue, problem, or troubleshooting question, those can still be submitted as individual posts to the sub. This megathread is strictly for purchase announcements.

Hello I recently got a Samsung S90H tv 77” since it was on sale and I love the anti glare on it. But my question is paired with the Apple TV is it worth it? What settings should I change I see changing to SDR is supposed to be better or should I just put it on an older tv I own ?

New Apple TV 4K vs. original HomePod: which device responds to “Hey Siri” when both are in the same room?

I’m considering buying the new Apple TV 4K (4th generation) with its built-in microphones, but I have a few questions before pulling the trigger.

I currently have an original HomePod in my living room, which I use for hands-free Siri and HomeKit control. My main frustration is that Siri takes several seconds to respond to commands. For example, when I say “Hey Siri, turn off the lights,” there’s a noticeable delay before she says “On it,” but the lights turn off almost immediately after that.

I’m wondering whether the new Apple TV could improve this experience.

  1. Can the new Apple TV 4K listen for “Hey Siri” and respond to smart-home commands when the TV itself is off or in standby?
  2. If the Apple TV and original HomePod are in the same room, which device actually picks up and responds to “Hey Siri”? Does Apple intelligently choose between them, or does the HomePod usually take priority?
  3. Is there a way to make the Apple TV handle hands-free Siri commands while keeping the original HomePod for music and audio?
  4. Could the new Apple TV’s hardware and Siri capabilities meaningfully reduce the delay before Siri acknowledges HomeKit commands, or is that delay likely caused by something else?
  5. Would I be better off replacing the original HomePod with the new HomePod mini 2 instead?

Thanks!

Casting from iPad to Apple TV disconnects after a few minutes if I pause the show. Can it not?

• Upvotes

Is there a way to make it so that if I pause what I'm watching, and don't touch the iPad or anything, like I'm just leaving the room for a few minutes, and then come back, can I make it so the TV is still paused on my show?

It's so annoying to constantly have to reconnect the casting from iPad every time I pause and get up for a break.

How do you watch foreign films on Apple TV when US digital storefronts leave off original-language subtitles/captions?

Hi everyone,

I am new to this group and ran into a frustrating issue recently. I’d love to know what workarounds or setups people are using on their Apple TV hardware for this.

I wanted to watch the Spanish film Julieta (2016) in Spanish with Spanish subtitles (SDH/captions).

US Storefront Releases (Apple TV): I purchased the movie legally on the Apple TV app, but because Sony Pictures Classics distributed it in North America, the file only came with Spanish audio and English/French subtitles. Original Spanish subtitles/captions were completely removed from the US release package.

Subscription Streaming: Apple TV and Fandango are currently the only storefronts carrying it, but because it is a VOD purchase/rental rather than a broadcast stream, US distributors are not required to include native closed captions.

Hardware & Media Locks: Official European imports have full Spanish captions, but Region 2/B locks prevent them from playing on standard hardware, and standard TV storefront apps don't let you side-load external subtitle files.

I know I can download a .srt subtitle file from OpenSubtitles, but I'm looking for the cleanest way to watch it directly on my living room setup using the Apple TV box.

For those of you who frequently watch foreign or imported films on an actual TV screen via Apple TV:

What is your preferred setup for getting external subtitles (.srt) onto an Apple TV box?

Do you stream local files via apps like Infuse or VLC, use AirPlay/casting from a browser, or rely on a dedicated PC/media server?

How do native speakers or hard-of-hearing viewers in the US usually deal with US distributors stripping original-language
captions from storefront releases?

Really curious to hear how others tackle this!

Best bluetooth headphones to connect to Apple TV?

Hi everyone!

I currently have a pair of old Bose QC, and I love them, but they are soon to die so I am looking to replace them.

The thing with these, is that I get VERY OFTEN audio lag, not syncing correctly with video.

Also it is a bit annoying that I have to go to setting to connect them each time.

Lastly, I like to lay in bed with them.

Does anyone have a suggestion?

PS. AirPods max are too expensive, and I don't like their design, maybe when they get a makeover I will get them.

Apple TV sound problems

I recently got an Apple TV 4K, but I’m having some sound issues. When I connect it to HDMI 2 or 3 on my TV, the sound coming from my soundbar is choppy and distorted. However, when I connect it to HDMI 4, the sound works perfectly fine.

As far as I understand, HDMI 4 is the slowest port on my TV, so am I losing any picture or sound quality by using it?

I’m using a high-speed HDMI cable, so I don’t think the cable is the problem. Does anyone know why this is happening or how I can fix it?

Apple TV + Retro Emulation + Native looking app. Wanna test?

Post image

Hey everyone!

I’m a retro gaming enthusiast who’s always wanted a good-looking Apple TV app that’s easy to set up, navigate, and use to find your games. The options for Apple TV have always felt pretty limited, so I decided to build one myself.

Features include:

- Platforms: Arcade, SNES, Mega Drive, GBA (new)
- Load your own game backups directly from your local server or transfer them to your Apple TV
- Artwork matching
- Save states synced via iCloud
- Customizable controls
- iOS and Web companion apps
- No Ads. No tracking. No subscriptions.

######

I’m looking for people who’d be interested in testing it and sharing feedback!

If you’re interested in trying it out, let me know!

Beta slots are currently full, but new ones will be announced at r/FridoApps

TrueHD Atmos working via Plozz App! (kind of)

Figured I'd share this since TrueHD Atmos support has been one of the biggest missing features on Apple TV for years. I'm not affiliated with this project.

Plozz is an open-source Apple TV media player currently in beta. The latest pre-release versions (2 days ago!) added support for decoding Dolby TrueHD Atmos, including the object metadata and height channels.

From my understanding, It uses the open source project, AetherEngine, to decode the TrueHD stream and render the Atmos spatial metadata in real time, then feeds the resulting audio through Apple's native Positional Audio pipeline so tvOS can output it as Dolby Atmos via Dolby MAT.

This is not TrueHD bitstream passthrough or bit-perfect output (it's lossy). But it does mean you can get the Atmos object/height presentation from TrueHD tracks rather than having the spatial metadata discarded when decoding to regular multichannel PCM.

The dev also recently added DTS:X height audio support.

A few details:

- Requires tvOS 26+

- TrueHD Atmos rendering is enabled by default.

- Supports Plex, Jellyfin, Emby, etc.

- Currently free and open source.

You can try it through the public TestFlight or sideload it from GitHub:

TestFlight: https://testflight.apple.com/join/EKfReNMu

GitHub: https://github.com/brandomoore/Plozz

Just thought this was worth sharing since getting TrueHD Atmos object/height effects working on Apple TV is huge for anyone with a library of Blu-rays.

Dune 1&2 are awesome, btw.

Amazon delivery date: 12/17

Anyone else preorder from Amazon and get a super delayed delivery estimate? Am I better off canceling Amazon and ordering directly through Apple? Showing up at the store day of? I really want it ASAP 😆

Why isn’t there a dedicated Home app?

I feel like it’s a huge oversight to not put the Apple Home app on the home screen to access your smart home dashboard. I know you can access it from long pressing and swipe on the remote but it would be so much easier and faster to open it like the full app on iPhone and iPad. Is there a reason why it’s not setup like this on Apple TV?

\Edited to add more context to mention the Apple Home app for smart home control.*

Just ordered a used Apple TV 4K (2017) - how will it do running Infuse/Neptune for Jellyfin?

I was waiting for the new Apple TV but opted not to pre-order one, mainly because of the price. I just found a used Apple TV 4K (A1842 / 2017) for $75 and pulled the trigger.

I only want the box to run as a client for Jellyfin. I currently have a Firestick 4K. I plan on running Neptune or Infuse on it. How will it do? Or should I have spent more time looking for the 2022 model?

Thanks.

Best Buy has 3rd gen in stock

As title,
Not sure if who else was holding out to see what 4th gen was bringing and felt underwhelmed with the updates and decided to go 3rd gen only to find out everything was OOS. Looks like BB got them back in stock for the 64gb. 128 was always in stock.

Audio Lag with Sonos Beam (Gen 2)

I have the original Apple TV, Sonos Beam (Gen 2) and the Samsung QE43Q7F2A. There’s a noticeable audio lag when watching anything through the Apple TV, despite using a 16k 96gbps HDMI cable. I was waiting (like everyone else) for the new Apple TV, but now it’s been announced I don’t know that I needed to bother.

My question is, will the current (3rd Gen) Apple TV be good enough to remove the audio lag when using the sound bar?

Alternative to the new Apple TV

Everyone is universally slamming the new Apple TV. But, what's the alternative? If you need a new streaming box what is the best device out there right now that you can walk into a store and buy?

I think there are two categories of users of the Apple TV and Apple only cares about one

How do you use your Apple TV? Is it the central hub of your home entertainment center? Or is it just another piece of equipment attached to your AV receiver?

I think it's obvious Apple is interested in the first user. Why else are they even pushing this idea of using HomePods to create a fake surround sound system? They see your Apple TV as the only device you need. It can play your music, it can play your movies and TV shows. And that's true, the Apple TV can do all that. And for a lot of users, this is perfect.

But there are many of us who fall into the second category of users. I've had a home entertainment system since the early 2000's. What I mean by that is I grew up in the 80s where we bought receivers, turntables, speakers, CD players, cassette decks, equalizers, Amps, speakers. This transitioned to home entertainment centers later to include televisions and surround sound with woofers, DVD players, blu-ray players, etc.

I've added an Apple TV to this setup, mostly for streaming purposes. I got rid of my DVD player. I got rid of my Blu-ray player. But I also built out a home media library by ripping my own blu-rays and DVDs and I turned to the Plex app on my Apple TV for viewing this media. And this is where Apple is 90% perfect, but falls short a little. I really want the Apple TV to fill the purpose of a 4K Blu-ray player. This is why I ripped my movies. I've already had 2 go bad just sitting in their cases. No visible scratches or anything.

I have 7 Apple TV's in my home and I can admit that 6 of them fall into the first category. These are attached directly to a TV and that is their purpose. But the 7th one sits in my den and never connects to my TV. Everything here runs through the AV receiver. This is why I would like a better Apple TV that was more high end, for audio and video. Some of us take our home entertainment seriously. We want the big screen. We want the best audio quality we can get. We want the best video quality. We just wish Apple was as serious.

PicPic - The First PICO-8 Emulator(Retro Fantasy Console) on the App Store (and Apple Watch), and Now on Apple TV!

Post image
0 Upvotes

Hey everyone!

Here's a new update of PicPic, the first native PICO-8 emulator on the App Store (iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch). It now supports the biggest screen available in the Apple ecosystem: the TV. So you can enjoy your favorite games on the big screen with friends and family.

New Features & Bug Fixes: * Apple TV Support: You can now play all your games directly on your TV, with exactly the same compatibility as on your iPhone. * Remote Support: On Apple TV, you can use the Siri Remote to play. Is it a good experience? Hell no, but you can. * Multiplayer: Apple TV supports multiplayer for up to 8 players, which makes family gaming easier. * Import: Importing on Apple TV is more complex than on other devices, but the app handles all the hard work. Just scan the QR code or enter the IP address, drag and drop your game, and you're good to go. * Top 200: The iOS version now have a shortcut, in a separate section, to the top 200 best PICO-8 games. * And as always, improved game compatibility, with ongoing work in this area.

Next Update Plans: * Theme maker (I know I've been promising it for months, but I'm on it). * Fix the audio issues in some games (this update fixed a lot of games, but some still have issues). * Improved compatibility with more games.

The app is 100% FREE FOREVER, with NO ADS, on iOS and tvOS, and completely UNLIMITED.

Download / Update: Available now on the Apple App Store.

Happy to answer any questions.

Note for moderation: Thanks for allowing PicPic on the sub. As always, the app does not encourage piracy and does not contain a single line of code from PICO-8. As a side note, emulation is legal in the United States and in most European countries.

Can I disable the microphones on the new Apple TV?

I really don’t care for the new AI features and I am concerned about the privacy with the microphones always on. Does anyone know if I will be able to disable the microphones on the new Apple TV?
