Weekly Megathread Weekly iOS Battery Support Megathread

General advice for those concerned about their battery from the Support FAQ Wiki:

Battery health

Battery health depends on usage and a variety of other factors. It is normal to see a decrease in battery health by 7-10% per year, resulting in a battery health of 80-85% after 2 years. This number can fluctuate, remain the same, or decrease quickly over a small period and should not cause undue concern.

Apple recommend battery replacement when your device falls below 80% battery health if you notice reduced battery life. If it falls below 80% within the first year you may be eligable for a free battery replacement. It fails after your warranty, it's a $69-$89 USD replacement cost for a battery. Contact Apple Support here.

You can find more information about battery health and performance from Apple here.

You can check the cycles count with Coconut Battery for Mac or iCopyBot for Windows.

Battery life

Issues relating to battery life can be categorised in three ways:

  1. Normal battery life that is to be expected due to use
  2. Reduced battery life caused by a recent update, iOS indexing, an iOS bug, or a third-party application
  3. Reduced battery life, or other abnormalities such as overheating or sudden power-off, caused by device or battery aging

If you experience issues with your battery:

  1. Check your battery health. If it is below 80% or you are experiencing issues you suspect are related to device or battery age, see Apple Support.
  2. If you have a new or recently updated/restored device, wait a number of days for background process to complete. If you continue to have issues, wait for a further iOS update. If you are on iOS Beta, you can expect to have a decreased battery life.
  3. Review the advice below on maximising battery life
  4. Consider restoring your device.
  5. If issues persist, contact Apple Support.

Maximising battery life - the amount of time your device runs before it needs to be recharged.

  • Use low power mode (This reduces mail fetch, turns off background app refresh and increases the auto lock timer)
  • Remove apps from background app refresh
  • Ensure auto lock is on
  • Turn off auto brightness and manually reduce brightness
  • Use dark mode if your device has an OLED display
  • Clearing background apps from the app switcher does not improve battery life

Maximising battery lifespan - the amount of time your battery lasts until it needs to be replaced.

  • Avoid extreme temperatures
  • If you notice that your iPhone gets hot when charging, remove it from its case
  • Store your iPhone in a cool place, switched off, and half-charged if not using it for long periods - and charge it every 6 months when in storage

App I turned my 2011 iPhone 4S into a Stream Deck for my Mac with Claude Code (no jailbreak, no App Store)

Post image
104 Upvotes

My iPhone 4S had been sitting in a drawer since forever. It's stuck on iOS 9.3.5 and can't install a single current app. I wanted it on my desk as a small Stream Deck–style control panel for my Mac, and I built the whole thing with Claude Code in one evening.

What it does

8 big keys: 7 Mac apps of your choice, plus a Take note key. Tap a key and the app opens on the Mac.

Take note: dictate with the iPhone keyboard's mic, and it starts a new Claude chat on the Mac with your note.

Now playing: artwork, track, progress, and previous / play-pause / next for Spotify or Apple Music on the Mac.

Internet widget: download/upload speed and ping (macOS's built-in networkQuality), plus a live traffic graph.

Batteries widget: MacBook, Magic Keyboard / Mouse / Trackpad and AirPods, each shown as an icon + percentage.

A big lock-screen-style clock and date.

Hold any key to choose which apps go on the deck.

No jailbreak, no App Store, nothing installed on the phone. The 4S just runs a web page in Safari ("Add to Home Screen" makes it full screen). A small Swift program on the Mac serves that page over Wi-Fi and does the real work: opening apps, reading batteries, controlling Spotify.

Support pictures turn dark after a few seconds?

good god, please, someone help me. i’m so sick and tired of this feature and i’m not sure if there’s a way to turn it off as i’ve looked everywhere online and can’t seem to find a solution. i have an iphone 13 and no matter what settings i put, when i take a picture it tends to saturate a few seconds later. a good example is my dog. i take pictures of her all the time and they always turn dark. and considering her color, sometimes her face completely disappears and she just looks like a silhouette and it drives me nuts cause 95% of the time theyre the cutest pictures. i’m posting an example here. though you can still her face here, my point is that it saturates. i was able to get the brighter picture by saving the LIVE photo as a video and screenshotting it. and yes, ive tried turning off LIVE photos and it still happens. is this a common occurrence?! can it be turned off? i hate this!

Accessory iPhone Rugged Protection w/o Sacrificing Camera Quality

• Upvotes

I am looking for an iPhone 18 Pro case before I buy the phone and I need to preface with the fact that I live a life of chaos. My last phone was in an underwater waterproof bag that still leaked and even though the phone was also 'waterproof' and only under water for like 10 minutes it bit the dust.

I have been trying to search online but keep getting generic low quality options on Amazon and these are the big factors I am looking for:

  • A fully enclosed case. I want to put it in once and never take it out again and not worry about sand, water, etc.
  • Camera quality, I use my phone for a lot photography and videos and I want a high quality camera protector that doesn't compromise camera quality (as much as possible)

Bonus points for:

  • Any type of strap or thing on the back to stop fatigue from holding my phone

Any insights from anyone happy with their current phone case greatly appreciated!

Support is whatsapp constantly recording my screen?

Post image
2 Upvotes

screenshot obtained from app privacy report -> whatsapp. i’ve shared my screen on whatsapp calls for, maybe, 5 mins at a time? but it seems like whatsapp continues to access my phone’s screen recording for days at a time until the phone is shut off at some point.

is this normal? does this mean whatsapp is constantly watching my screen?

for context, no, it doesn’t say anything in the control center after i stop sharing. just wondering why whatsapp is continuing to use this permission. thanks guys!

Support iPhone 16 randomly registers touches before my finger actually touches the screen - any ideas why?

I’ve been having a really annoying issue with my iPhone 16, since iOS 27. Several times a day, a particular button gets activated when my finger is extremely close to it but hasn’t actually touched the glass. I don't have a screen protector glass nor my screen is broken.

It’s not limited to one app. I’ve noticed it with different buttons across multiple apps, so it doesn’t seem to be an issue with a single app’s interface, but it's usually when the finger is super close to that button, but never touched it.

What I’ve noticed:

  • Happens several times a day
  • Happens across different apps and buttons
  • Also happens when the phone is unplugged
  • The screen appears to register a touch before my finger physically makes contact

It’s incredibly frustrating because the phone sometimes does things I never intended to tap.

I’m wondering if this could be a faulty digitizer, an iOS software issue, screen protector interference, or something else.

Has anyone else experienced this on an iPhone 16?

If you’ve had the same problem, I’d love to know:

  • Did you manage to fix it?
  • Did Apple Support identify a hardware fault?
  • Did an iOS update, screen protector removal, or another troubleshooting step help?
  • If Apple replaced or repaired your screen, did that resolve the problem?

I’d appreciate any advice or firsthand experiences.

Thanks!

App Android to IOS

About a year ago, I switched from android to IOS. Something I really liked about my Samsung was the calendar app and the reminders app. They just aren’t the same on my iPhone. Has anyone else been in this boat and can you recommend an app in the App Store that would be similar to Samsung calendar and reminders?

Discussion Curious about limitations of Airdrop

Post image
147 Upvotes

Hi Everyone,

I recently went on a trip with my friends. We all have iphones(16PM, 15, SE). We clicked a lot of photos and videos(close to 1500 or more😵‍💫)

Naturally, after the trip, we wanted to share those photos & videos. Since everyone had IPhones, Airdrop became common tool to share.

When I started sharing photos, anything above 500 items in a single attempt failed. Like, airdrop froze and gave error right away.
sometimes it glitched out. We had to manually batch media in group of 200 to share it.

I would love to hear what I was doing wrong? I understand the quantity of media was A LOT. But, should Airdrop not handle such cases of batching automatically or atleast fail gracefully?

Would love to hear your thoughts on your experience of sharing media using Airdrop.

Note: for smaller transfers, it works like a charm. No issues there. Also, we all had sufficient memory, so that cannot be the issue for failure.

Discussion Which notification actually earns an interruption on your iPhone?

I’ve muted most app notifications, but a few are worth the interruption because timing changes what I can do next. A meeting reminder when I need to leave is different from a badge that can wait.

My take: a notification should prove it’s urgent, not just announce that something happened. Which alert do you keep on even when most are off? What makes it worth the interruption — and what app sends you too many?

Disclosure: I work on an iOS voice-assistant project and think about when an assistant should stay quiet.

Discussion Iphone 18 pro max speaker issue

Hi all, I just got an iPhone 18 Pro Max a week or so ago. Everything is working perfectly until I tried to play music on speaker. Somehow, when playing music above 60% the sound coming the top speaker (earpiece) starts to break apart and sounds really muffed. It’s almost sound like those $10 speakers you get on some random stands on the street. This is definitely not what I expected from Apple and their iPhone line. I tried to test different song like Dog Days Are Over and Sunroof, and everything is fine other than top speaker. Before 18 PM, I am a 15 PM user and my old phone definitely does not have this problem. I also went to the Apple Store in my region the other day and pick up a random display model to test it and it also sounds really bad with the top speaker. I still have a few days left within my 14 days exchange period I just wondering should I even bother to exchange it because I also read online that it might be a software issue ? Not sure if anyone else having the same issue or not and if you guys have any solutions ? Thanks !

Support Instagram running in the background on an iPhone 17 Pro Max while it is charging or turned off

Post image
53 Upvotes

As you can see in the image (I used Google Translate on the photo, which was originally in Turkish), Instagram is active on the 17 Pro Max—running in the background—even though no other apps are open. Is this normal?

iOS Version: 26.7.1
BH: %100

I keep both "Background App Refresh" and "Location Services" turned off—neither is enabled—yet this issue still occurs. It even happens when Wi-Fi is switched off. Is there a solution to this? What can be done?

Discussion Why does StandBy always forget my preferred view?

Basically the title. I thought StandBy mode was supposed to remember the last view selected. I like to have one of the clocks in particular (the least bright and annoying one). Yet every night I plop it on my Anker MagSafe charger and it pops up with the stupid photo album or calendar or something else I don’t want. This happened before and after the iOS 27 update. Anyone else find StandBy annoyingly inconsistent?
