Yes Bo Nix isn't playing well. Yes it's concerning. Yes the Broncos think he can play himself out of it. Details below:
There are the numbers, he's 18-3 in last 21 starts. That's what the Broncos are leaning into as this conversation continues. And why wouldn't they? Nix has proven he can simply win football games and there is a ton of value in that. His 4th quarter performances show that, with 13 GW drives and 12 4th quarter comebacks. That's just incredible and can't be overlooked.
There is the competitiveness the organization loves about their QB and it's been there since he entered the building. He's a gamer. And we've all seen that a ton during his first two seasons. They still think he has that in him.
Nix has a knack for not hurting a really good Broncos team and that's a skill. Minimizing negative plays and bad turnovers and making plays when they're needed most.
He's also walked into a situation every QB should want to enter the NFL with. An absolutely dominant defense, a solid OL, a Super Bowl winning head coach who is also one of the best play-callers in the league's history, and some how not an abundance of pressure most first round picks are under. He's won more than the rest of the class. There is something to be said for that. But we can't overlook the situation.
My understanding is there is a difference with Nix in 2026, where Nix is focused on not losing the game more than winning the game. Don't turn the ball over. Don't be the reason why we lose the game. That's kind of manifested in his mind to the point that the conservative approach has become an issue on the field.
Nix is healthy, and the ankle is fine. But returning from an injury is also not cut and dry and takes time. The Broncos want Nix to run it more and they're seeing a player that is a bit gun shy right now. If you look at the runs that Denver has dialed up, a lot of them he's looking for the sidelines and he's looking for a way to get down as soon as possible. He's not looking for the extra yards or the needed yards in key situations. It's been frustrating.
This plays a part in the drifting or escaping out of clean pockets I'm told. This has always been an issue with him his whole career, but this year it's more exaggerated and impacting a passing game where WRs are open. Nix often times is on the move before even the first read gets to the top of their route. The play designs have some longer development downfield, so this is a bad combination right now.
Nix is seeing ghosts at times. He's also waiting to see a players numbers before he lets it rip. That's an issue especially over the middle. There is very little anticipation and also moments where Nix freezes when the picture changes.
It's worth adding that Waddle gets open a little differently and sometimes it takes a second to do so. With how Nix is bailing, that's not impacting the pass game. Courtland Sutton hasn't been himself, struggling to get off the LOS or break free early enough at times and the timing is thrown off. Pat Bryant was emerging and is out. There are other aspects of the offense that are playing a factor as well.
The Broncos are not planning on moving on from Nix. Lets be serious. They also are obviously concerned with the funk he's currently stuck in. They'd love to see him take a couple of big hits and realize he's not going to get hurt, the ankle is good, remember you're a tough football player. One big game could get him going. There is that thought too.
But it's not good right now. There is concern. And they're going to keep working to get him out of it because they believe he can. There is a large enough sample size that he can correct some of these issues and be more of a reason why they win football games, compared to just trying to get through a game mistake free.
