Not sure if this is big news in the UCLA community but I was surprised, with mixed feelings, to learn that a convicted murderer is a part-time research mathematician at UCLA

• Upvotes

His name is Christopher Havens. He's in prison until at least 2035 or so for killing someone. While he's been in prison, he's naturally developed an interest in mathematics, and he has requested for his family to send books to him while he's doing time so that he could learn math. He's now published a few papers, got himself a big role in the Prison Mathematics Project, and has co-authored a graduate level number theory textbook published by Springer. Interesting stuff

Our School Doesn't Do Halloween Right

If the weather is right this year, I'm either taking the train or borrowing my filthy neighbor's clean car (I help him wash it sometimes) to UCSB. Our school has nothing on the parties at UCSB. I want to wear as least as possible clothes to go as a bare bachelor to demonstrate that we don't need a whole lot to enjoy shit despite the fucked up economy.

I mean like, fucking...last year there was a party at a little house (they have a lot of little houses ar Isla Vista there). The DJ started playing a very strange song called Goodbye Horses 🐎 and this one guy who I assumed was living there walked down the stairs and threw down his robe in a thong asking if anybody would f-ck him because he would fuck himself as everyone cheered him on. I was somewhere between laughing and feeling uneasy at what he was going to do next before he started jumping up and down to the next song.

I might just go there in my robe wearing a towel underneath to make it easy if anyone wants to take it off me. I'll ask the DJ to play Come Ride the Pony as I'll emerge from the bathroom with a cigar in my mouth laughing hysterically as my entrance.

We all need to practice having public speaking skills and ego-centric entrances as well. Everyone here has some shit they want to lay down to make themselves known. And mine isn't for free. You have buy me dinner first so I can post it on Instagram without showing you!

None of those trash liner tarps covering the entrances to frat houses along Gayley have NOTHING on UCSB. Cheap school bus riders!

It's no wonder why in middle school, on a Monday morning the bus smelled like ass and liqour and we stared at the bus driver asking what went on in the back. Now I know why. Those p-ssy ass go round frat Smegas probably had rented it.

Wild Friday Night at Wooden

I went for a workout at night after dinner and I was approaching an empty locker to stuff my shit in. And out from the bathroom comes my professor of a very difficult class. He came out panting with a huge grimmace on his face like I just saw something that I shouldn't have. I think he took a shit that harder than the fucking exams we're about to be slammed with.

Then, after my workout as I was showering, some guy brought an air horn and kept blowing it while singing. He ran before I could see him.

I brought it up to the front desk on my way out and they told me that they caught word that some group of guys wants to go streaking there, so the front desk folks have these little waterballoons in a box and they're filled with spicy liquids and dye to throw at them in case it ever happens.

How to meet/talk to people in lecture?

Genuine question--try not to make fun of me. I am a 3rd year STEM major, and my major is small enough where I take many courses with the same people in my graduating class. I have always sat in the back of lecture halls by myself or sometimes with a friend. Taking the honors courses my 1st year helped me connect with a handful of people in my major, but beyond that, the rest are mostly peripheral (which is not unexpected).

Meeting people through clubs, work, or any tighter-knit activity is much more approachable than trying to spontaneously talk with people I have seen for three years but never interacted with. Study groups are a nice idea but they never clicked with me, as my work schedule makes meeting difficult and I fare much better academically than my peers.

So with that said, how do you guys do it?

Best of the Best

I liked the movie, light, unserious fun. But the least believable part was how big the freshman dorm rooms were. They had a spacious double, good light, and private bathroom ! Should had them sweating it in a classic triple.

should i transfer here as a pre med?

• Upvotes

I got into ucla my senior year but ended up choosing my local csu, since I thought it’d be less competitive and would make it easier for me to get into medical school. But I feel like I’m missing out on the college experience of leaving my hometown and getting to explore life. It’s been easy to get research opportunities and getting club leadership and such but it’s because nobody does anything on campus. I’m considering applying to transfer to UCLA because I regret my decision. Do you guys think it’s worth it? I initially rejected my offer because I thought the premed environment at UCLA would be too oversaturated and it’d be difficult for me to get into medical school. Is this true?

Where can I borrow a strong magnet

Does anyone know where on campus I can access a neodymium magnet rated at 10,000-12,000 gauss? I need to borrow it for literally 5 seconds to remove a security tag from one of my clothes. (I have the receipt I didn’t steal it.)

made a discord server for people looking to connect and make friends!

I always see people online wanting to meet new people or make group chats, so I thought, why not make a Discord server for everyone?

I want it to be a place where people can find others with similar interests through different channels; gaming, the gym, nightlife, etc. + campus life and events so people can find things to do and meet up irl.

It's an independent community, not an official school server, and everyone is welcome! I'm hoping to keep adding more channels and features as we grow.

(Also looking for mods to help out as the server grows, so feel free to reach!)

If you're interested, please join! :)

Struggling with roommates/housing as an exchange student. Should I move off-campus?

Hi everyone, I’m an exchange student from Japan and currently having a really tough time with my housing situation. I’d love to get some advice or hear about other people’s experiences.

I live with two other exchange students from China. They knew each other before coming here, and since they’re in a different year than me, we don't have much in common. Naturally, they mostly speak Chinese with each other. From the very beginning, even before moving in, it felt like the two of them were making plans together behind my back. When I tried sending emails to connect before arriving, it took forever to get a response. One of them didn't reply until right before we moved in, with just a quick "sorry for the late response!" message. Because of this, we couldn't even discuss basic arrangements beforehand, which was really frustrating. Looking back, maybe they just disliked the idea of living with a Japanese roommate, and I should have requested a room swap right then and there.

Since living together, I’ve felt completely isolated. We don't hang out, I've never even had a meal with one of them, and I don't have any Halloween plans either. What frustrates me even more is that I paid out of my own pocket to rent a fridge for the room. The roommate who barely communicated before moving in hasn't paid a single cent for it, yet she uses it freely every day. We can't even have necessary conversations about shared living rules or responsibilities.

To avoid conflict, I’ve been staying out of the room as much as possible so they can do their own thing (napping, gaming, job interview prep, etc.). I usually don't come back until midnight every day. Meanwhile, all my other international friends seem to get along fine with their roommates and are handling their academics well, which honestly makes me feel pretty envious.

The breaking point happened recently. One of my classes suddenly switched to online. Because study rooms were fully booked, I asked if I could stay in the room just for that class period. I was turned down because one of them had job interview prep. They’ve been practicing in the room constantly lately, making it hard for me to even be there. What angered me the most is that I always take my own interviews and club calls outside so I don't disturb anyone, but they refuse to compromise.

This class was crucial for me to record because English isn't my native language, and I have a health condition/disability that makes daily life challenging, so I really need a quiet space to record lectures to keep up. Because I had to take the class in a noisy common space, I couldn’t record it properly, which was a huge setback.

My mental health completely hit rock bottom after this, and I realized I just can't tolerate this anymore. I finally reached out to my RD to request a room change.

I’m wondering: Would moving off-campus be a better option? Do off-campus housing environments generally have people who are easier to communicate with and handle these kinds of situations better? Any advice or insights would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for reading.
