Our Longstanding “No Politics” Rule remains unchanged

Read our rules. We have had a longstanding “No Religion, No Politics” rule here at r/tools.

The mods aren’t stupid. We also don’t like getting buckets of reports in the inbox.

If someone posts/comments with politics, resist the urge to reply and argue. Just report, downvote (if that’s your jam) and move on with life.

A small flag, sticker, etc that appears in a photo will generally be allowed (so long as it doesn’t violate other rules and doesn’t draw a bunch of reports) but a bunch of people in the comments saying “Hell Yeah, a fellow [INSERT PARTY] Supporter!” is gonna get the post pulled. Political content that is clearly the motivation for the post will get the post pulled.

First time it’s a short ban, second time it’s permanent. And as we’ve discussed before, the mod team doesn’t go looking for posts, we’re not lifeguards, we respond to the reports we receive.

Let's talk about the report button.

"No advertising or promoting tools, brands, 25000 woodworking plans, your YouTube channel, etc."

Somebody is reporting things constantly for breaking rule 4, and you're batting zero for it being right.

r/Tools/comments/1nu26tv/am_i_missing_something/

r/Tools/comments/1ntwiyj/wiha_tools_impact_sockets/

r/Tools/comments/1nt43md/does_anyone_know_a_set_similar_to_this_that_isnt/

r/Tools/comments/1nt3400/does_anyone_have_experience_with_these/

r/Tools/comments/1nt138a/home_depot_promotion_milwaukee_canada_milwaukee/

These are some examples of posts that have been reported over the last day. None of the are breaking any rules, please stop reporting things like this. The reports are only mucking up the moderator inbox and are being kicked up the Reddit chain to the admins as abusing the report button.

Unless you see a post that boils down to "hey guys, this is XXX from YYY, come check out our suspicious sale at toolname.malware.com" leave the report button alone. Same goes for the people who report literally every YouTube link ever posted. If someone's only interaction with r/tools is them spamming their YouTube channel that's a problem; a relevant and organic video isn't.

If someone thinks the above links are spam, please tell us why. Rule changes aren't unheard of and if it's what the people want I'm fine with it. I'm just not seeing any advertisement in the posts.

Other than that you guys are great. Keep up the good work.

I'm completely aware that this is a useless post for 99.99% of our users. If anyone has questions or comments about the sub feel free to chit chat here and I'll try my best to answer things if you want; or just ignore me completely, I'm good with either.

$80 Marketplace Tool Haul

Picked up a pretty insane tool haul the other day. Haggled him down from $200 to $80. Barley had an idea of what I was picking up as the guy had horrible photos and didnt even photograph half of it! I thought i was picking up maybe 20% of this.

Got there and he was just like.. "yeah take all this too". Crazy. Best find in a while.

500 sockets

320 wrenches

Have yet to count the hand tools but easily 200+

Will give everything a nice soak in a DIY De-rust solution and then try to figure out what to do with it all. haha

TSUNODA EK-72 electrician's knife. A surprisingly stylish design. [OC]

Many electrician's knives have a rather rugged design, but I really like the look of this TSUNODA EK-72.

The finish feels high-quality, the wooden handle is simple and elegant, and the hollow-ground blade opens smoothly. The distinctive tip shape, typical of electrician's knives, is also practical.

Weight: 107 g

Overall length: 177 mm

Blade length: 72 mm

Blade thickness: 3 mm

Stainless steel blade and frame, natural wood handle, and a liner lock.

Nut stuck on Bolt, please help?!

**Edit- this is the top of a functional trainer weight stack - the piece that connects the two weight stacks together.

**This is hot-dip galvanized steel from Get RX’d

**I have the Allen key & the correct 6 side socket, I have wrenches and vice grips

**The hardware also came from Get RX’d but I think I put the wrong nut onto the bolt

Attempting to put together gym equipment & could not tighten this all the way so as I’m backing it off …I can’t get it loose. The bolt head is rounded so it’s extremely hard to keep it steady. I’ve tried vice grips & oil & put all my strength into it, tried holding bolt side still and nut side- cant get this thing loose!!! I think the nut is the incorrect size. I have no idea what to do next!

What are some of the best products with the worst logos/labels

I know this might go more down the road of consumables rather than tools, but, thought it might be fun.

A guy was selling his dad's retirement machining tools and let me get this Central Machinery Tool Grinder for $120. It was unopened in the box and manufactured in 2004.

The whole thing is solid cast iron and weighs 100lbs. I'm so excited to add this to my metalworking setup and start grinding my own HSS lathe bits.

About to accept an offer for a helper position. The owner gave me this tool list, is there any brands that are go to or worth the money. Never bought tools before so I don’t want to just go to harbor freight to buy stuff if you guys have a better recommendation.

Had some trees and hedges that needed cutting.

Home Depot had this chainsaw for $249 on clearance with battery and charger. Makita is sending me a free extra battery on top of that from a promo.

Charles H. Day Co. had the hedge trimmer for $179, tool only.

Found a guy selling the 40V weed whacker for $80 new in box (he got two in order to qualify for an extra battery promo last year).

So $510 for chainsaw, hedge trimmers, weed whacker, 5ah battery, and 4ah batteries, all new. And probably $40 in gasoline driving all over town and checking lots of places to find the deals and get everything.

Charged up the battery and went to work on all the excess tree branches. (Tall ladder helped.) Literally filled up three entire compost bins with the trimmings, did all my hedges, and still had one bar of battery left.

I've used some gasoline chainsaws in the past, but this Makita is on a whole other level. It went like butter through basically everything. Nothing felt to remotely challenge this saw. I've never had that actual fun chainsawing, but that was actually a pleasurable experience.

The hedge trimmers are also beastly. They powered through the dead, dense hard buildup of sticks under our bushes without slowing down or bogging down.

I have not tried the weed whacker yet, but if it does bit whacks weeds as good as this saw saws branches, then I'll be shocked, because it's got the same industrial-feeling build quality as the others.

May just order that new TD005 impact from Japan based on this experience. Wish they had a release date for the US market version.

I have a 3/8 craftsman ratchet from the 80s that needed a rebuild, and last I looked a kit was $35 or so. This was $40 shipped on eBay. My first snap on ratchet. Someone seems to have filled the screws with glue/epoxy for some reason, any ideas how to get it out without wrecking the screws? Id like to clean it out and grease it.

Edit: I got the screws out, I had to melt the epoxy out with a lighter. No idea what possessed someone to do that

Edit 2: I cleaned all the old grease out, it was black, gummy, and smelled horrible. I put some new grease in it and cleaned the gunk out of the lettering on the outside and it works great now

Looking for my first Drill

I’m a more beginner maker at home, I have some 3D printers, a soldering iron, electrical tools and I’m getting into the field more and more. I’ve dealt with a good bit of drills before at my school’s shop and my late grandfather’s shop. So I want to get a good general purpose drill and I am looking for any suggestions anyone might have. Thanks for reading and for your suggestions!

Pick up cheap tools on Marketplace they said...

When tools on marketplace haven't been completely destroyed by trade use or neglect, this is what you find in my part of the world.

It'd take an awful lot of sanding discs to make up for the lack of warranty and a brand new unit.

I gotta say it was worth the extra money.

Most, but not all of the lower priced cutters were only single edged blades. Between that, the grip, and the actuator for the lock, this one was the winner. It was a long job (for a cook and hospital administrator) and we re-plumbed our entire house ourselves. Dated copper was leaking and we just put in new everything from the meter to the spigots. Washer and water heater were renewed as well. Whole house filter and kitchen RO went in also. 1” Pex was used for the main lines.
Well worth the extra money over the Milwaukee, Klein, and Kobalt offerings.
For sure are not thrilled about having plastic plumbing, but we were not going to get in and sweat copper in all the shitty corners of this old house.
Thanks.

In this video, I take a hands-on look at the Vevor portable metal-cutting bandsaw to see if it's a solid, cleaner upgrade from my chop saw for the workshop.

I found these in a box of tools on marketplace a few years back when I had purchased my home. They’re nice quality and I wanted to buy a pair as a gift… until I saw they were discontinued and all over eBay for $200 a piece… insane.

Who has ever used a 0.035" or 0.028" HEX L-key (unless it was a 0.9mm or 0.7mm HEX L-key)? If yes, what was the job. Bonus point for photographic evidence.

I am always afraid that just looking at them would result in those tiny L-keys breaking in half.

EDIT – So far, Redditors have worked with those L-keys on:

  • avionics equipment
  • R / C motors
  • lab equipment
  • 'staplers' (the high velocity type)
  • phone and optics
  • replacing the Freedom Units measurement system
  • their self esteem.

NTD and Tip for painting metal embossed lettering

If you use solid paint markers like the Sakura I have and you let them dry, alcohol wipes rubbed lightly over the excess leaves the paint in the indents and cleans them off nicely!
