Hello everyone,
I'm coming to you today because I've been tearing my hair out over an issue for over a week now, and I feel like I'm not making any progress whatsoever.
To keep it brief : whenever I update the Nvidia graphics driver for my GPU, the installation starts and proceeds normally. However, when the display starts to "flicker" or "reset" (when the screen goes black briefly several times over the course of a few seconds), my PC restarts on its own. It then attempts to boot normally three times without success before taking me straight to the diagnostic screen, which also fails. This forces me to restore Windows to a previous image, usually from the day before, using the built-in recovery tool.
CFG : MSI RTX 5080, Intel i9-14900KF, 64 GB RAM, MSI PRO Z790-P motherboard, 1200W Be Quiet! PSU, 3 SSDs and 1 HDD, Windows 11 Pro. I'm running a dual-monitor setup, with my main monitor set to 144 Hz (BenQ connected via DisplayPort, in case that matters...).
The PC and its components are a little over a year old. Out of laziness, I left the assembly to a professional who's been in the business for quite some time.
I'm currently using Nvidia graphics driver version 610.88, which is the only version so far that allows me to use my PC reliably (gaming, photo and video editing, etc.).
Windows and GPU power settings are both set to maximum performance.
Here's what I've already tried:
- Performing a clean installation using DDU in Safe Mode, then installing only the driver using the .exe file provided on Nvidia's website. Result: the driver installs, but as soon as I change the refresh rate to 144 Hz, the same issue occurs. The computer shuts down on its own, reboots, and goes through the same sequence of events described above.
- Using DDU in Safe Mode to remove the current driver, rebooting normally, then installing the driver through the .exe without installing Nvidia App. The update fails at random stages, the installer closes by itself, and even when I manage to reach the end of the process, the system crashes and then reboots into recovery mode, or the driver simply isn't installed at all.
- Updating the usual way through Nvidia App, selecting the clean installation option (which removes the old driver). Result: same problem, same sequence of events, except that I have to manually trigger the three failed reboots to enter recovery mode because I no longer have any display output. (The PC is running, but the screen stays black.)
- Resetting all BIOS settings to their defaults, with no overclocking: no change.
- Disabling Secure Boot: no change either.
- Trying some rather far-fetched suggestions I found online, such as turning off the second monitor during the update, etc. Nothing works.
It's also worth mentioning that about three months ago, following a Windows 11 update, my applications started crashing frequently and behaving strangely. They would open and close several times within a few seconds, everything became unstable, and my work environment was unusable. So I reinstalled Windows, but that didn't solve the issue. Later, I found out that I needed to adjust my CPU voltage, so I increased it by 0.050 V, and everything has been stable ever since.
My main theory is that there's a power spike during the display flickering/reset process, which triggers the computer's protection mechanisms. The PC then fails to boot three times and ends up with a corrupted driver installation, forcing me to restore Windows to a previous state.
At this point, though, I'm completely lost. If anyone has any ideas, even a small detail that might point me in the right direction, I'd really appreciate it.
Thanks in advance! I'm happy to provide any additional information if needed!
