Yikes.

Event & Promotion Things to do in Syracuse — right now?

Post image
3 Upvotes

We built now.me to answer the "what should we do tonight?" question without digging through five different sites.

It's completely free.

The Syracuse live events website lists things to do, shows, concerts, and events coming up around town. Worth a look if you're planning the weekend.

The app (iPhone / iOS / Android) goes beyond events. Open it wherever you are and it shows what's nearby right now: restaurants, bars, museums, and other things to do.

We are actively working on it, so feedback from people who live here is really valuable. If something's missing or wrong for Syracuse, let me know in the comments or by DM.

Recommendation Wanted Photographer Recommendations

Hello! My boyfriend and I wanted to take JCPenny style (yk the ones with the backgrounds and awkward poses) photos for our 6th anniversary. We want to do it in our Halloween costumes but are envisioning the classic backdrop style. This isn’t a must have though, we’re just trying to find someone/a place that would be willing. A lot of photographers in the area are really booked out or focused on weddings. Any recommendations would be appreciated!

Recommendation Wanted Co-working space or work-friendly cafe/library/public space

Moved to Camillus this summer and have been working full-time remote at home. Starting to get a little cabin fever which I assume will only get worse as the winter weather sets in.

Can anyone recommend a place to hang for a couple hours a couple of times a week?

I’m mostly engaged in solo work on a laptop, so WiFi (free or paid if necessary) is a must. When engaged in meetings I wear headphones but need to be able to speak at normal volume, not whisper into a mic.

Discussion Ryan McMahon is a fucking prick

$100+ million for your pet project is cool. But a $12,000 per year raise for 2 election commissioners (less than half of what they asked for) requires “exercising restraint.” I can’t wait for someone to beat him and he goes the fuck away.

I hope the legislature overrides the veto and shoves it back in his dumb ass face.
__________________

Onondaga County Executive Ryan McMahon vetoed raises approved by the legislature for the county’s two election commissioners.

The commissioners currently make $99,973. They haven’t received a raise since 2020.

Commissioners Kevin Ryan and Dustin Czarny came before the legislature during their budget hearing seeking a salary of $130,165.

The legislators instead added a $12,000 raise for each position to the budget.

McMahon said those raises aren’t a good use of tax dollars.
“At a time when many Onondaga County families are struggling to meet everyday expenses, we must exercise restraint in spending taxpayer dollars,” McMahon wrote in his veto message. “I cannot support a 14 percent salary increase for commissioners whose positions permit outside employment and who have been confirmed to receive outside income.”

Ryan, a Republican, said he had no comment on McMahon’s veto of his raise.

Czarny, a Democrat, said it was “unfair” and that he was exploring his options. He said he is busy working every day until the election is over but plans to sit down with a lawyer afterwards.

“It seems like an excuse for the county executive to continue his partisan attacks on this position,” Czarny said. “I don’t know what his reason is, but I can tell you it’s not the reason he put in his veto message.”

Czarny said that their positions are the only county employee positions to not get cost of living raises. He also said they are the only board of elections commissioners in the state to not receive raises in the past seven years.
In 2020, Republican legislators tried to cut the pay for the job. Democrats claimed it was retaliation against Czarny, who had been outspoken on issues like early voting and legislative redistricting.

Instead, legislators changed the jobs toremove an annual cost of living increase. That means for six years, the salary has not changed.

Ryan, speaking before the legislature, said $130,165 is the amount they would be getting in 2027, if they did receive cost of living adjustments.

McMahon cites outside income as a reason to not grant the raises.

Czarny’s outside work for Uber came under fire in 2019, when then County Comptroller Matthew Beadnell filed a complaint against Czarny, alleging he drove for Uber while on the clock.

District Attorney William Fitzpatrick investigated and cleared Czarny.

Czarny said Thursday that he occasionally still drives for Uber.

“There’s plenty of positions in Onondaga County that did cost of living increases that have outside income allowed,” Czarny said. “It’s unfair treatment.”

The county legislature could override McMahon’s veto, if they had 12 votes. The override would require a special session, that would also require 12 votes to hold, said Ruthnie Angrand, director of legislative communications. There will not be a special session for an override, Angrand said.

Recommendation Wanted Dog trainer recommendations

• Upvotes

Hi! I recently welcomed an 8-week-old puppy into my home, and I’m currently looking for a reputable dog trainer. I was considering Sit Means Sit, but a friend mentioned that their training methods involve electronic collars, which is something I’d prefer to avoid, especially at such a young age. Im really hoping to find a trainer who uses positive reinforcement. Does anyone have recommendations for trainers who take this approach?

News Neil deGrasse Tyson inspires 3,000 science fans in Syracuse

Thumbnail

Renowned astrophysicist and Hayden Planetarium director Neil deGrasse Tyson told roughly 3,000 science fans at the Landmark Theatre last night it’s something of a miracle that “we’re alive despite all the efforts of the universe to kill us.”

After silently admiring the Landmark’s gilded plasterwork, he brought up Syracuse’s favorite subject: weather.

“I drove up here from New York City earlier and I got out of the car—it’s colder here,” Tyson said with a shiver. “Snow is a thing. You guys have like 100 inches. Some crazy number.”

Someone in the audience shouted that the average seasonal snowfall was 120 inches.

Tyson pointed at the person. “There’s a weather weenie right there,” he quipped. “100 just wasn’t big enough? But was that last year? 120 inches?”

Last year was 143 inches, another person shouted.

“See,” Tyson said, “you guys are just total geeks. Where do you put the snow? There’s a point where you can’t put it anywhere.”

Discussion THEE Bridge breaking news!

It is being reported today that our all time world champion bridge will undergo some work starting very soon. Though it is unspecified in the linked article below, I am thinking that our local champ will be having an intensive endoscopy to check things out due to all the trucks that it has eaten over the years. Don't worry folks, our local champ will be up and running as well as eating trucks soon enough!

News Hochul confirms talks to lure 2nd big chipmaker to Central NY: ‘Micron will always be the first child’

Gov. Kathy Hochul said today she’s involved in talks to lure a new computer chip manufacturer to Marcy in Oneida County, but any deal is contingent on federal approvals that could be weeks away.

Hochul told the editorial board of Syracuse.com | The Post-Standard that landing a second big chip manufacturer in the region would complement Micron Technology and help make Upstate New York a cluster for semiconductor manufacturing that could one day rival Silicon Valley.

Rant Low point in a life - Int Student

Hello All,

Just felt like sharing, came as an international student back in 2021, ever since never left the path of hard-work. Saw many hurdles, suffered through a divorce few months ago, then the current political landscape, has made things even more exhausting and tiring. With all these work permits haulted, its just as if one layer on another adds up, posing as a challenge.

Sometimes i feel like, there is no one to talk to, or just sometimes it feels like it’s unexplainable.

Still have my head high.

Thanks All.

Information & Advice Spending a day in Syracuse. What should I check out?

Hey everyone! I’m passing through Syracuse on a road trip and would love some advice from people who know the city. I’m Brazilian and always enjoy getting a feel for a place through its food, history, and nightlife.

If you had a day to show someone around, where would you take them? Also looking for a restaurant worth eating at and a good bar to grab a drink.

Appreciate any recommendations!

News Another rail infrastructure update for Central New York, and this one is specifically being tied to Micron and the growth of manufacturing across the region.

Senators Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand announced $3.17 million in federal funding for upgrades to the New York, Susquehanna & Western Railway between Cortland and Virgil.

The project will improve about 4.5 miles of track with continuous welded rail, new ties and ballast. The work is intended to remove slow zones, improve safety and reliability, increase track speeds and allow the line to handle 286,000-pound railcars.

Schumer said that with projects like Micron underway, “it is more important than ever that the region is connected and has modern infrastructure.”

Gillibrand also specifically mentioned Micron, saying the improvements are coming “just in time for new corporations like Micron coming to the area.”

There’s already a significant amount of freight moving on this corridor. During an earlier round of improvements, NYS&W reported that 10,749 loaded railcars traveled the Cortland-Syracuse project area in 2023, which the railroad estimated kept nearly 37,000 tractor-trailer trips off area highways.

NYS&W carries building materials, aggregates, lumber, chemicals and other freight and connects Central New York with the larger national freight rail network.

This latest award brings federal funding for the overall NYS&W improvement project to about $13.5 million.

One important distinction: this is not Micron’s new rail yard or the rail spur being built at the Clay site. This is the existing regional freight network connecting the Cortland and Syracuse areas.

But as Micron, its suppliers and other manufacturers expand across Central New York, this is the type of existing infrastructure that could become increasingly important.

I’ll put the full announcement from Senator Schumer’s office in the comments.

News More than 500 people registered for Bechtel’s Micron hiring event, some candidates could potentially leave with a job offer, robotic dogs will soon be working at the Clay site, and Bechtel says the transition from Gilbane is now underway.

There were actually quite a few interesting updates packed into this one.

Bechtel held its hiring event Wednesday at the Embassy Suites near Carrier Circle in DeWitt. According to WRVO, more than 500 people had pre-registered, the parking lot was nearly full and a long line of candidates formed inside.

Bechtel is the company handling the engineering, procurement and construction work for Micron’s first fab in Clay.

One of the more interesting parts of the event was how quickly some of the hiring could happen.

Bechtel spokesperson Melissa Newman told WRVO that candidates were able to speak directly with hiring managers and, for someone with the right experience, it was possible to potentially leave the event with a job and begin working within a couple of weeks.

Bechtel is hiring across engineering, procurement and construction, but Newman also pointed out that those categories cover a much wider range of jobs than people might normally associate with construction.

Automation and AI are becoming part of that work as well.

One example she gave was that Bechtel has robotic dogs that will soon be joining the team at the Clay site, where they can help engineers with things like scanning and surveying.

There was also a pretty significant construction update.

Bechtel says the process of transitioning the site from Gilbane to Bechtel is now underway. Bechtel currently has a smaller footprint at the site, with employees already there accepting deliveries and its first trailer set up. Gilbane still has control of the site for now, but Bechtel says it is preparing to take over and ramp up its presence.

So this was a little more than just a hiring event.

More than 500 people registered, hiring for the first fab is starting to move quickly, new technology is being brought onto the construction site, and we’re beginning to see the transition toward the company that will actually build Fab 1.

Credit to Eric Reinhardt and WRVO Public Media for the reporting, as well as our own sources.

I’ll put the full WRVO story link in the comments.
