Elections & Politics No Kings "Vote Early" Megathread | October 17, 2026
We're going to try having a Megathread for all the protests happening across upstate NY this weekend. Please use this thread to post information on event times/locations, pictures of the events, and any questions about the events.
Other posts will be removed in order to keep discussion centralized here.
This is NOT the thread to debate national politics, or for insulting protesters (or counter protestors). Comments doing so will be removed and may result in a ban.
For more information on voting, please visit https://elections.ny.gov/
Stay safe this weekend everyone!

/r/Upstate_New_York is back open!
Hello fellow upstaters!
About a month and a half ago, /r/upstate_new_york was set to restricted and all the moderators left.
As someone who was born and raised in Upstate New York, I didn't want to see this sub shuttered. So I requested ownership from the Admins.
This sub is now reopened! Hopefully we can keep things going as smoothly as they were before.
A few FAQs:
No rules are changing - we'll likely have a post in the coming weeks to discuss rules and what the community wants.
If you want to be a mod, please don't message me. I'm going to get a handle on this first, and then likely open up mod positions over the coming weeks depending on the workload.
I have no idea why this all happened. The moderation logs were cleared before I was given access.

Plattsburgh vs Schenectady
If you have to choose between the two what are the pros and cons??
My fiancé and I are moving to upstate New York from the Midwest. He’s from Plattsburgh. I am not. Where would you move?

Upstate NY: which city is the safest in your opinion?
I'm thinking of moving closer to the Canadian border (Ontario), but not too rural. A sizeable and safe city/town preferably.

Considering moving and visit cities..
Hi everyone! For those of you actively exploring places to move to in upstate NY, how much time do you typically spend in a city before deciding whether it might be a good fit?
I’ve visited Buffalo and really liked it, but I only had a couple of days there. Definitely going back for a second visit. Planning a Rochester visit in December as my teen is interested in a college around there.
I’m considering things like renting versus buying a small condo, property taxes, walkability to downtown areas, lifestyle stuff like gyms, music venues, and access to cultural and outdoor stuff as I really like hiking and skiing.
What else should I be thinking about? And do you think a week is enough time to get a feel for a potential new home? I've already started to scope out job opportunities in my field.
I’d love to hear about your experiences and any advice you might have! 😊 Thank you in advance 😀

Albany USPS is the WORST
Always routing packages to incorrect locations so they end up back at Albany a few days later. Or sitting on the package for a few days before moving it. Both in my case 😡

Energy Rebate Checks
I was just wondering if anyone has received their energy rebate checks? I keep reading about them, but I don’t know anyone that has received theirs yet!

cool things to do in late October?
hi all!! my partner and I are celebrating our anniversary with a trip October 26th-31st and we're looking for things to do!
we'll be in Ithaca Monday-Wednesday, and Watkins Glen Wednesday-Saturday. we're also getting tattoos in Cortland so anything around there is welcome too!
most of what I'm seeing online is wineries and breweries, which we're not super interested in, or hiking trails... we're definitely going to check out at least a couple of the state parks, (probably Watkins Glen and Buttermilk Falls) but we want other things to do too!
specifically interested in any good vegan food, record stores, cool museums, antique/thrift stores or maker's market type things, anything halloween-y :)
and yes, corning museum of glass is already on my list!! I went once as a kid and it was amazing, so excited to revisit it as an adult.
also, anywhere good for a couples massage up here?? my back aches 🥲
thank you!!
