MOVING MEGATHREAD Monthly "I'm Moving to the Hudson Valley" Thread

To reduce the number of "I'm moving to the Hudson Valley, can anyone tell me about X?" posts, we are starting a monthly megathread. All questions asking about moving to the Hudson Valley should be kept within the monthly thread. Posts outside of the thread will be removed.

Here are a few existing threads that I found using this search:

Locals, if you want to help make this megathread a success, you can do a few things:

  • Come in here and comment! The threads will only stick if they actually prove useful
  • Report standalone "moving to the HV" posts

question Tenant-focused lawyer who practices in Orange County?

I’m in Newburgh and have been dealing with a mouse infestation for almost five months, and going crazy.

I’ve documented everything with photos and videos. Exterminators have been out twice, but all they’ve done is lay down poison bait, which doesn’t address the actual structural issue where the mice are getting in.

It took the landlord about a month to send someone out initially, and we were then left waiting another month for further treatment, despite providing evidence pretty much every other day that there is still signs of mice in the apartment.

Currently, I have a LIVE MOUSE STUCK IN A GLUE TRAP. I called the landlord about it, and he told me he was “not permitted to speak to me” and hung up. (For context, I’m not listed on the lease, but the landlord knows I’m an occupant and that I’ve been living here for months. When my boyfriend told him I was moving in, he had no objections and said I seemed like a nice girl. Lol. )

I’ve already filed a code enforcement complaint and contacted two tenant help organisations, but trying to be prepared for the next steps. We will be moving ASAP but to make it even more stressful my partner is out of the state for business for another month and I’m terrified to move things and discover more mice.

At this point, I feel like our only option may be to sue to get the necessary work done and hopefully recover some rent abatement and compensation for our damaged belongings, or pay out of pocket to get the actual work done and sue to recover, and I’m not gonna lie I am a spiteful bitch and don’t want to fix the problem for the landlord, so I would want all the work undone when we move. We are also going to be adopting a cat, so that’s nice. If anyone else has been in this situation, what steps did you take? And do you have any advice for us?

Every lawyer I’ve managed to find seems to really go hard for the landlords, and I’m struggling to find someone who actually focuses on tenants. I feel like we have a pretty solid case given how much documentation, and lack of action, but maybe I’m just being overly optimistic??

Also, if anyone knows of any two-bedroom apartments or houses for rent in the Hudson valley area, please let me know. I’m getting pretty desperate to get out of this situation. 🥲

citgo’s owner/manager in hudson off fairview ave yelled at me for using a public trash can

i just had this interaction a few hours ago but it’s got me upset. i work at a retail store in hudson and on my lunch break grabbed a lunch (since i forgot to pack one last night😅) and then went to fill my car with gas. i had 2/3 little bags you get from a fast food place and a drink cup and put it in the garbage since it was going to be sitting in my car and i didn’t want it to start to smell. i have a little garbage bag thing that i’ll put stuff in so i don’t get anything on my seats, so that’s where the bags were put, it just doesn’t close so anything left in the bag makes the smell not hidden. after i spent over $50 to fill up my car some guy that also starts talking to me, which i had no idea about because i wasn’t addressed and we’re on the side of a busy-ish road. this was as i was throwing out these items from the garbage thing, but its rubber on the inside so the bags couldn’t come out so i had to shake it. not sure if this random stranger thought i was dumping a whole bunch of garbage in this public trash bin since i had to do that to get it out. then as he got in his car to leave the owner/manager comes out and says that i can’t do that, he just took it out earlier that morning and now i put garbage in it. i didn’t really say much other than okay because i was on a time crunch and people were coming in needing to get gas and i was in the way. i’ve never been spoken to like that by a stranger or a worker at an establishment. i work customer service, i know what it’s like, and i would never in a million years talk to anyone like that. (and i’ve had parents let their dogs and kids pee on the floor while i am at work and i had to be the one to clean it up, so i truly get that it can get annoying)
safe to say i will never go back there, to the valero it is since thats the only other place with decent prices atm. (and the citgo always kinda scares me anyway, very sketch)

was i wrong for throwing a few things away as i was filling my car up?

Vintage in the Hudson Valley Festival - ulster fairgrounds

Hi all -

I’m setting up as an art vendor at the Vintage in the Hudson Valley Festival next summer (July 10-11). I’m interested if anyone went last year, what it was like, was it a fun time? expected price ranges (I know it varies), etc. but like on a scale from local tag sale to super bougie brimfield booth 😉

Thanks!

Saugerties High School - Clothing drive to benefit students.

There is a company, I believe, that picks this up and weighs it. And gives the school money per pound. It is not for individual students, it raises money for student activities.

Looking for a Local Tech & Science Buddy — Peekskill Area

I'm a retired physicist and longtime programmer living near Peekskill, NY.

I'm interested in Linux, programming, electronics, AI, physics, and exploring new ideas in science and technology.

I'd enjoy meeting someone with similar interests in person, perhaps over coffee once a week or so, to exchange ideas, discuss projects, and maybe collaborate on something interesting.

Age doesn't matter. Curiosity does!

If you're in the Peekskill or surrounding area and this sounds interesting, send me a private message.

question Best friend’s Bachelorette

So we’re bringing our best friend to Cold Springs NY for her bachelorette. She wanted to do something lowkey and wholesome. We got a good deal at an Airbnb so we took it. We have some hikes and dinners planned but any suggestions from locals would be nice. There are always places that don’t show up on the internet but host cool events/do cool things. So any recs will be nice

question Train from Middletown to Newark Airport

Has anyone ever take the train from Middletown to the Newark airport? I know it’s probably pretty straight forward and I know there’s a transfer in Secaucus, for some reason I’m still nervous about it.

Anyone done it?

question Friends my age?

I made a similar post like this before but this one is more about people around my age (25m). I'm interested in games, art, alternative things, nature, and I'm open to new things. Also open to hosting game nights especially D&D. If anyone has any suggestions in the Dutchess area or just wants to talk dm me!

Warning for Traffic Hell this weekend in the Rhinebeck/Kingston/Poughkeepsie area.

This weekend is NY Sheep and Wool and it takes place at the Duchess county fairgrounds. It is the largest show of it's kind in the US. On Saturday buses will be coming in from everywhere within around 5 hours. I know of one yarn store in Maryland that has a charter. The fairgrounds will hit theme park density on Saturdays. Since this event has out grown the fairgrounds there are large side events in Saugerties, Kingston, and Hyde Park. Also the yarn store in Red Hook often draws a lot of traffic thanks to the free gift.

Hotels within 30 minutes of Rhinebeck are full and people start flooding in for events today. Rt 9, 9G, the Taconic, and 9W will see massive traffic jams. The Mid Hudson and the Rhinecliffe bridges will be very backed up. The festival ends at 5. This is when peak traffic will start. Expect restaurants around the area to be very crowded the next few days.

Most of the traffic hell will be a Saturday issue as the buses only come that day. Expect an upswing in the people trying to get from the train stations to the fairgrounds.

This is your friendly reminder that the tourist event is happening.
