My Sarcochilus in Melbourne:)

Although they are common here, I’ve heard that is not the case in other countries? Is this true? Either way, I would highly recommend trying to get your hands on a couple. They are such a treat!

They do enjoy cooler conditions and can withstand a few negative degrees, though no frost and not for extended periods of time. I think California is like this? (Not entirely sure). Mine grow in light shade with a bit of dappled afternoon sun ☀️ and they like to stay moist all year round:)

Psa: None of my Sarcochilus grow in this greenhouse. I simply took them in there to photograph:)

This was a rare specimen we managed to get our hands on; Dinema polybulbon. We sold an established specimen. The lady was insistent on buying them. We guessed that she was a fellow hobbyists and would love to have this added to her collection.

Fortunately, we did seperate a rhizome or two. Nevertheless, when we received this picture on our inbox, it was NOT pleasant.

Orchids are beautiful! The appeal is clear as day. However, it's important to remember they're still living organism that's been taken from their native environment. They require care and human intervention.

Here's some takeaway from this incident:

  1. Water thoroughly. Misting is not enough.

  2. More light doesn't always mean better. Sun exposure is great, but too much and you risk burning your plant, especially if you don't water them.

  3. Ask the people who grew them. A lot of people I've met in nursery are lovely and willing to share their knowledge if asked politely. They too enjoy when people take good care of the plant they just bought.

  4. Don't be drawn simply by the price tag or "rare" specimen remark. It's all goes down the drain if you don't take care of them properly. We value certain specimen for their characteristic, one that can only shine when the plant is happy.

She completed her bloom cycle several weeks ago. I clipped her dried out stems off once they were brown all the way to the base, and she is now rewarding me with a new leaf! She dropped two after I brought her home, so im very excited for a new one. Pictured after a nice soal with a teensy bit of 10-10-10

Question Orchid Growing Roots from Leaf?

Thumbnail

I bought this beautiful Vanilla Orchid Imperialis and it arrived today. As I was unboxing it, a leaf fell out of the packaging. I’m not sure if it came off the plant, soil or just the packaging.

It definitely looks like a vanilla orchid leaf although I had no idea they could grow roots like this? Everything feels dry and definitely not plump. It almost feels artificial lol.

Could this grow into a new plant? Or is a node or something needed? I know that it’s very common for leafs to root in nature despite not being able to continue growing as a full plant.

Any help would be amazing!

Help What do we think this is?

Keiki? Please sweet orchid gods. I bought this phal from the grocery store, and it wasn’t very healthy. The leaves looked off, I think I could’ve saved it had I repotted it earlier but I just kind of let it do its thing and it ended up getting crown rot. I stopped the rot, but it only has one leaf left and the roots are bad obviously. She’s been hanging on by a thread and I was really hoping I would get a clone from this plant. It would be the first time it’s happened for me and I really wanted it to for this one because she’s so pretty.

This doesn’t look like a root to me, but I don’t want to get my hopes up. 🥴 What do you guys think?

Indoor Orchids First orchids ever

First epiphytic orchids I've ever gotten. I bought them already mounted on cork bark with lots of happy roots. They are under a 20W grow bulb in a temporary isolation tank before they go to their home in my terrarium setup

Humidity is good but they might need more circulation since this container is only partially uncovered for some air exchange

Anyway just joining this reddit and getting into orchids!

Indoor Orchids Blooming size for Oncidesa Gower ‘Orange Delight’

I know it won’t bloom because it’s got a new growth, and I messed up the watering n got crinkly leaves, but I think I’ve gotten my culture better. But I’m mostly curious about mature pseudobulb size for this, and how many growths I should expect to wait to have a blooming size plant.

Kinda thinking that if things go well for this growth there should be potential flowers?

This is my freak phal, who is weird for many reasons. Peloric, sterile, and has had some petaloid bracts. Now there is this... it had a rough start, but it's otherwise growing fine.

Outdoor Orchids Wrinkly Vanda

Thumbnail

Hello!!
I’ve been keeping phals and dendrobiums since I was a teen, but I’ve always wanted a vanda. I finally caved and got one for my birthday last week, since I finally have an apartment with a patio to keep it on!!
I’m in central Florida, and temps have been getting into the 80s. Right now, it’s only getting direct sun for a few hours in the evening. I’ve been watering by soaking its roots for ~15 minutes once per day. When I started noticing the wrinkles, I assumed it was dehydrated since it’s been pretty warm, and started watering twice a day.

Do the wrinkles look like they’re from dehydration or something else? I don’t want to over-water if I’m mistaken, but it doesn’t seem like the watering has been helping much.

I always haven’t fertilized it yet (I’ve been a little scared to mess things up, haha), so if anyone has recommendations, that would be great!! I know they’re supposed to be big eaters.

Thank you in advance!

What's going on w my girl? She sits in front of a North facing frosted window, I changed her out of the grocery store bark and into fresh Orchiata back in August of this year. I did keep her in the original planter though. Which only has ventilation on the bottom. Maybe staying too wet for too long?

First two photos are today, the last is from July 27th. No ID Phal. It’s flowering so I think it’s doing well, but I want to make sure. I have some space to move it out of the light if needed.

Help Growth at top of spike?

I live in Socal for climate context.

So basically I got this orchid (phal) in the spring time, it bloomed all through summer and then the flowers dried up and fell.

There was new leaf growth and new root growth, and I think those are still growing?

Anyway its october now and the old spike has something growing at the tip? What is this?
