2023 Fall and Winter Orchid Trade and Sale Thread

Please use this post only to offer or request orchids for trade or sale. Before you post what you'd like to trade/sell, or what you're looking to trade for, read the rules below first!

Rules:

1.) No personal information can be exchanged publicly. Conduct sharing of addresses via pm or email.

2.) Post what orchid(s) you have for trade, what you're looking for in return. If you have pictures, post them or write an accurate description of the orchid you want to trade or sell. If you're selling, post how you'd like to receive compensation.

3.) If you agree to a trade and have an issue on your end of the deal, communicate! Most people are reasonable and will understand a delay or an unexpected issue that comes up. That being said, trade at your own risk. The moderators are not responsible for privately conducted trades gone wrong. However, if there's an issue with an ongoing trade do contact the moderators. If someone fails to come through with their end of the deal, ignores communication or otherwise is being problematic we need to make the community aware of deadbeat traders. Do NOT make posts calling people out, insulting, harassing, or making accusations at them publicly.

4.) Only make legal trades here. If you ship or receive a trade overseas or out of your country, make sure all proper paperwork is in place first if required.

5.) Ship within a reasonable time and pack well. Flat rate Priority, 2-3 day via USPS within the US is standard for plants. Use whichever shipping method is appropriate for other countries. Your orchid shouldn't spend more than a 2-3 days in the mail so they don't suffer too much from the heat/cold. While in cooler weather its generally better to ship orchids totally dry, its probably best to water any more moisture loving plants a day or two before they ship out (so they are moist but not soggy) or wrap some sphagnum that has been wetted but thoroughly squeezed out around the roots of bare root plants.

6.) If you've successfully traded, update your post to make sure it availability is accurate.

Giveaways, and just trying to re-home an orchid that maybe just isn't performing for you is totally fine to post too! You never know who might want to try growing it. Seed pods are also a great thing to offer since many people may want to try flasking and it is safer and easier to send seeds than plants. If everyone trades fairly this is a great way to add to your collection or get rid of orchids you are bored with or are willing to make divisions of.

Happy trading!

Success My orchids are reminding me there is hope after an abusive relationship

I cried today seeing this new growth on my orchids. I recently got out of a very abusive relation that took up so much of my time and energy that I wasn’t even able to take care of my beloved orchids. My orchids hadn’t bloomed in a year and my favorite orchid died because I neglected them. Some of them had gotten sunburned, one got crown rot. I’ve had most of these orchids for four or five years, and I’ve NEVER had one die. He just stole all my fucking time, I wasn’t even home enough to water them or keep an eye on them regularly.

Anyways I left that relationship about two months ago after he threatened to shoot me with a gun, I had to go to the hospital, and literally had to run away. When I came home after a week of being in a domestic shelter, my favorite orchid had died.

I cried today when I saw that FINALLY after almost a year, all my orchids have new growth. I’ve had the time to take care of them again. I have time to take care of myself. I hope this comes as a sign to someone to care of yourself and there will be growth in the future. 💚

During the last few days of our honeymoon back in June, these were the orchid highlights from the Singapore gardens by the bay and the botanical garden. It was incredible. The miniature yellow ones are my favourite!

Video We named them Pothead

Pothead is two orchids (Angraecum Veitchii). I am obsessed with the bigger roots of orchids like phals, vandas, etc. Anything wild, crawly and chonky (THAT I CAN WATCH TURN GREEN WHILE I WATER). So when I found out you could mount orchids, I went crazy. I've got a phal on a real skull and a vanda on a huge jawbone. But still I yearned. And then I found this on Etsy from a fantastic artist. My hope is that the creepy crawly roots will eventually come out of the holes in the face.
It's mostly planted, part mounted and I love it.
Please enjoy.

(Note: I do water the orchids properly, this was just to show the effect.)

ID on my tiny dancer?

I purchased a discounted and sad tiny dancer (all the others for sale were in bloom, this one wasn't and it was all shriveled) several months ago and mounted it on cork, well mounted them on cork, it was actually 2 in one pot. One has recently bloomed (and I think it's pushing out some more buds) and the other just sent a stalk out and I'm wondering if anyone cared to speculate on which cultivar I have.

Help Cheap orchid I got from Kroger re-bloomed?

I bought this orchid from Kroger for my wife’s birthday in April and the main branch and blooms died in August. Because I’m lazy I didn’t throw it out but a week ago I noticed it had made an offshoot with buds and then it bloomed again. I used to be really into orchids like 30 years ago when I worked for a garden center and got 50% off. I had the lights, soil and everything but I couldn’t ever get them to have a second bloom.

So my question for the orchid experts is what should I do now? I started watering it again but it seems to have more offshoots. Neglecting it seemed to work out well but I’d like to know if it needs a new pot, or fertilizer or anything. It’s doing so well I’m afraid to mess with it.

Help Should I be worried?

This looks odd to me, not like normal leave aging and yellowing. It’s only on the oldest growth and not progressing very fast. The last picture was taken a month ago.
The newest growth looks healthy and the roots as well. I’m soaking it a few mins once the medium ist almost dry and add fertilizer every watering.
I had thrips a few months ago, could it be because of that? Or could it be a virus or something?
Thanks for helping!

Help After pruning dead Oncodium roots, do I need to apply fungicide and wait on watering?

Just got my first orchid. It’s an oncidium. I pruned the dead roots, repotted it, and watered since I know the roots like to be in a moist medium.

My friend said I may have needed a funcicide and to wait about a week to water. If this is true, how can I fix this? I just potted it up like 2 days ago

I have grabbed these at a deceased estate sale. Am I correct that they are oncidium?

What would you do for care? I was going to divide my cymbidium, I am thinking these could just be reported?

Thanks!

Question Kiekes or Spikes

Thumbnail

Saw what looked like the start of kiekes or spikes on two of my girls this morning. Gertrude came to me from a friend with one kieke, but she’s now growing two more somethings. I have had Estelle since Mothers Day and trimmed her back maybe a month ago when the last of her blooms fell. Now she has something growing. Are these kiekes or spikes or is it too early to tell?

Orchids in my shower

Thumbnail

I envisioned having purple orchids in my bathroom because I have a skylight for the first time and so I designed these planters for my shower. I will keep you updated with how they last!

Edit: I’ve received a lot of comments, questioning my orchid expertise… trust me, I’m very attentive to my babies. I did get them at the grocery store, but they’ve been repotted into proper well draining orchid bark soil, and i designed the pots to have an inner drainage pot. I already have a beautiful phal orchid that’s been on my bathroom shelf for a a few months and she loves it!
As for the people concerned with the skylight and airflow, The skylight fills the bathroom with light everyday through the afternoon, and the bathroom fan is very powerful, it seems to be enough as I’ve already kept orchids in the bathroom, as winter approaches if I need to make any adjustments, I will. thank you for the concerns

Where can I find a reliable source to prove that the name Dendrobium phalaenopsis is officially registered?

I need to know whether Dendrobium phalaenopsis is an officially registered botanical name or just a name given to it by orchid enthusiasts.
