2023 Fall and Winter Orchid Trade and Sale Thread

Please use this post only to offer or request orchids for trade or sale. Before you post what you'd like to trade/sell, or what you're looking to trade for, read the rules below first!

Rules:

1.) No personal information can be exchanged publicly. Conduct sharing of addresses via pm or email.

2.) Post what orchid(s) you have for trade, what you're looking for in return. If you have pictures, post them or write an accurate description of the orchid you want to trade or sell. If you're selling, post how you'd like to receive compensation.

3.) If you agree to a trade and have an issue on your end of the deal, communicate! Most people are reasonable and will understand a delay or an unexpected issue that comes up. That being said, trade at your own risk. The moderators are not responsible for privately conducted trades gone wrong. However, if there's an issue with an ongoing trade do contact the moderators. If someone fails to come through with their end of the deal, ignores communication or otherwise is being problematic we need to make the community aware of deadbeat traders. Do NOT make posts calling people out, insulting, harassing, or making accusations at them publicly.

4.) Only make legal trades here. If you ship or receive a trade overseas or out of your country, make sure all proper paperwork is in place first if required.

5.) Ship within a reasonable time and pack well. Flat rate Priority, 2-3 day via USPS within the US is standard for plants. Use whichever shipping method is appropriate for other countries. Your orchid shouldn't spend more than a 2-3 days in the mail so they don't suffer too much from the heat/cold. While in cooler weather its generally better to ship orchids totally dry, its probably best to water any more moisture loving plants a day or two before they ship out (so they are moist but not soggy) or wrap some sphagnum that has been wetted but thoroughly squeezed out around the roots of bare root plants.

6.) If you've successfully traded, update your post to make sure it availability is accurate.

Giveaways, and just trying to re-home an orchid that maybe just isn't performing for you is totally fine to post too! You never know who might want to try growing it. Seed pods are also a great thing to offer since many people may want to try flasking and it is safer and easier to send seeds than plants. If everyone trades fairly this is a great way to add to your collection or get rid of orchids you are bored with or are willing to make divisions of.

Happy trading!

My Sarcochilus in Melbourne:)

Although they are common here, I’ve heard that is not the case in other countries? Is this true? Either way, I would highly recommend trying to get your hands on a couple. They are such a treat!

They do enjoy cooler conditions and can withstand a few negative degrees, though no frost and not for extended periods of time. I think California is like this? (Not entirely sure). Mine grow in light shade with a bit of dappled afternoon sun ☀️ and they like to stay moist all year round:)

Psa: None of my Sarcochilus grow in this greenhouse. I simply took them in there to photograph:)

Choose your own flair Client: How it Should Be vs. How it's Going

This was a rare specimen we managed to get our hands on; Dinema polybulbon. We sold an established specimen. The lady was insistent on buying them. We guessed that she was a fellow hobbyists and would love to have this added to her collection.

Fortunately, we did seperate a rhizome or two. Nevertheless, when we received this picture on our inbox, it was NOT pleasant.

Orchids are beautiful! The appeal is clear as day. However, it's important to remember they're still living organism that's been taken from their native environment. They require care and human intervention.

Here's some takeaway from this incident:

  1. Water thoroughly. Misting is not enough.

  2. More light doesn't always mean better. Sun exposure is great, but too much and you risk burning your plant, especially if you don't water them.

  3. Ask the people who grew them. A lot of people I've met in nursery are lovely and willing to share their knowledge if asked politely. They too enjoy when people take good care of the plant they just bought.

  4. Don't be drawn simply by the price tag or "rare" specimen remark. It's all goes down the drain if you don't take care of them properly. We value certain specimen for their characteristic, one that can only shine when the plant is happy.

Indoor Orchids First orchids ever

First epiphytic orchids I've ever gotten. I bought them already mounted on cork bark with lots of happy roots. They are under a 20W grow bulb in a temporary isolation tank before they go to their home in my terrarium setup

Humidity is good but they might need more circulation since this container is only partially uncovered for some air exchange

Anyway just joining this reddit and getting into orchids!

I’m so happy that this orchid (Rhyncattleanthe Nell Hammer) bloomed, but I found teeny tiny snails on this orchid and another one- therefore I’m sure there are more….. I already ordered this snail bait, but have heard mixed reviews. Does anyone have any tried and true methods to get rid of these little devils?

Why are the leaves on my Coelogyne getting crispy?

Thumbnail

This was sold to me as a Coelogyne cristata, although it is quite different from my other C. cristata. Just a different phenotype, or a different species / hybrid?

It is growing new pseudobulbs, but the new leaf tips keep browning, as pictured. I keep it fairly moist, as with my other Coelogynes. I am wondering if it is a water issue. I'm in the PNW, and all of my other orchids seem fine with the water straight from the tap. So, what is this, and why are the leaves browning? Thanks!

Question Orchid Growing Roots from Leaf?

Thumbnail

• Upvotes

I bought this beautiful Vanilla Orchid Imperialis and it arrived today. As I was unboxing it, a leaf fell out of the packaging. I’m not sure if it came off the plant, soil or just the packaging.

It definitely looks like a vanilla orchid leaf although I had no idea they could grow roots like this? Everything feels dry and definitely not plump. It almost feels artificial lol.

Could this grow into a new plant? Or is a node or something needed? I know that it’s very common for leafs to root in nature despite not being able to continue growing as a full plant.

Any help would be amazing!

Question Cattleya tips?

Thumbnail

I just received this cattleya from a nursery and I wanted to see if any Cattleya experts out there have any tips for me. Its no my first cattleya, but this is the first one I got that looks healthy and its in flowering size so I dont want to mess it up. What should I do to make sure it flowers a soon as it wants to flower? I live in Scotland, room is usually at a little bit less than 18°C and 15°C at night, about 78% humidity constant.

Its a Rhyncholaeliocattleya Hsinying Scarlet 'Cherry'. I want to water it (rainwater) and i was wondering if it would be good to repot it as it looks like it has some spanum moss in the center + some dead roots on the top soil + top layer fell so the plant is unstable in the pot; but not sure if that would make it not flower.

Help Orchids hate having their roots disturbed. Should I cut out that ONE single root segment or just let it be?

As the title suggests.
My Phal Schilleriana has that one root tip that started to rot. All the other look fine.

Should I take it out of the pot and cut it…or just let it be?

Thank you!

About a year ago, I received this orchid from a free bin in front of a flower shop which had a terminal spike. In my care it has sprouted a basal keiki, and is finally in bloom. It is absolutely gorgeous, does anyone know the name of this color? :-)

Help What to do with these tiny kid-brides?

Thumbnail

Hello good people of reddit, from Turkiye. I am kind of novice to orchid care, for about one year. These tiny orchids in tiny pots, one with three keikis, and the other one with a basal keiki (I think) were given to a friend as a gift about six months ago. They are in an office settlement, on a north facing window (unfortunately only option), I am their primary caregiver:) Are they miniature plants or is it like this because of the pots are so small? Keikis were the same when they came, but they grew some leaves and roots. Should I repot them or should I wait? Also should I seperate the three keikis, will they do any harm to the little mother?
