i need to leave the country for a couple months in order to handle some family business. i can’t pay rent in two places, and i also need a cat-sitter so i want to sublet my apartment with discounted rent for cat-care as many folks do here. i have a few people interested but don’t know how to proceed.
i live in a lapham managed property, and my building manager lives two doors down from me. i normally wouldn’t “ask” for an official sublease but i figured it would be stressful for a prospective subtenant to be discreet when constantly in plain sight of management. my lease says it’s allowed “with permissjon”, and so i did - was told the owners ‘aren’t allowing it’ without further explanation.
the option they gave me was to add the person as a co-tenant and then remove them once im back, however there is no legal way to get them off the lease if they suddenly decide they want to stay, and i risk somebody refusing to leave with no legal grounds to remove them. i asked if they could issue it as a temporary co-tenancy and they refused as well.
so now i feel trapped and exposed because i already asked. i am trying to weigh the risks of just bringing somebody anyway as a “cat sitter” (with the persons am consent of course) or doing the co-tenancy bullshit and trying to create some incentive against them overstaying. the issue is i have limited time and most people are also put off by the idea of a short term tenancy.
anyone have any experience that could be helpful? i’m truly lost
