Events, Activities & Sports I cleared trash from a bike lane in Downtown Oakland. All trash taken to the dump.

I cleaned up a bike path that was blocked with trash for several days. Took me an hour to clean everything up. Due to circumstances, I decided to take the trash to the dump myself and bite the cost. It has nothing to do with me and Oakland. Our relationship is still good.

Take it easy,
Peng

Pets & Animal Services Bella & Minnie are still looking for their Forever Home

Thumbnail

Bella and Minnie are 4-year-old Ragdoll/Highlander mix sisters who have been through more changes than they deserve.

Their original family made the difficult decision to rehome them due to frequent moves, hoping they would find a forever home. Unfortunately, that placement fell through, and these sweet girls are looking for a family who will truly commit to them for life.

Despite everything, Bella and Minnie are incredibly sweet! They may be shy at first, but once they feel safe, they warm up beautifully. They love pets, attention, and being close to their people.

About Bella & Minnie:

4-year-old Ragdoll/Highlander mixes
Bonded sisters — must be adopted together
Spayed, vaccinated, and microchipped
Great with children of different ages 0-16
Affectionate once comfortable
Have not been around dogs

These girls deserve a stable, loving home where they can finally settle in and never have to start over again. We’re looking for a family who understands that adoption is a lifelong commitment.

Seriously interested and ready to adopt? Message me for our adoption application.

$300 rehoming fee for both of them.

Food, Shopping & Services Bay Area transplants, what is a restaurant or food locations you really miss having them around here?

As a person who moved here from Chicago, I really miss Chicago Dog from Portillo's, Lou Malnati's, cheese curds from Culvers and controversial but I also miss having a Dunkin at a walkable distance or at a train station.

Events, Activities & Sports Work from some of the Bay Area artists out at this weekend's Shipyard Open Studios

Thumbnail

I like how there are so many artists out there at the Shipyard but also, the way its set up makes it easy to get from one studio to another relatively quickly.

I managed to bike out there this week and see some of work prior to the opening to the public. Among the faves: the abstracts from Dennis Parlante; Tor Archer's enigmatic sculptures that use the shapes of twigs and leaves to create a witchy and pagan effect; the quilts of William Rhodes; Rebecca Fox's twisty, highly worked metal and the Disneyesque illustrations from 16 year old artist and budding ballerina (she studies at SF School of Ballet) Danielle Hillman.

Tonight's (Saturday) CRANE illumination is the final in the series of four illuminations that began last weekend https://www.shipyardartists.com

Work & Housing Update: Honestly, I’m starting to wonder if I’m low-IQ or mentally slow. I simply cannot compete in the Bay Area in finding a decent paying job

Original post

About a year ago I posted here wondering if something was wrong with me because I couldn’t land a decent paying job in the Bay Area. It blew up way more than I expected, and a lot of you were kind enough to give real advice. I read every comment and took it, so I wanted to give an update.

Quick recap: I’m in East San Jose with my wife and toddler, with no family support at all. I got my job through my uncle after my mom passed in my early 20s. It was supposed to be temporary but almost 10 years later I’m still at the same company, making about 50k a year. Last time I described my job as document control (since it feels more akin to what I actually do), but to be fair to myself, I’ve worked my way up from a floor quality inspector to process engineer (or so they call it here).

Now regarding the advice that was given:

“Get interview help/maybe get screened.” A lot of you pointed at interviewing, and a few of you asked if I might be autistic. Since then, my wife and I have talked about it, and from all the years she’s known me, she is positive I might be neurodivergent. I’d need to get tested to know for sure, but if it’s true, it might help me understand why things like interviews feel so much harder for me than they seem to for other people. I’ve been working on my interviewing too. Honestly, I feel knowing whether I am or not is not going to do anything, idk. Interviewing is definitely a challenge though.

“Fix your resume and target better.” I tailored my resume with help offered last time and am currently using Harvard format and I’ve been applying nonstop, a few hundred applications so far, 3 to 4 a day whenever I can find the time. I’m using a job board that scrapes the web and aggregates new postings, I built boolean filters with this so I only see roles I’m actually qualified or close to qualified for, and I apply directly on the company site while the posting is still fresh. I thought all these tools would give me an edge, but alas, nothing. The funny part is that last time I could at least get screening interviews. Now I can’t even get those.

“Stay in manufacturing/apply at competitor jobs.” Last time I may or may not have said that I wanted out of manufacturing. At this point I don’t even care anymore. I just need the money. Beggars can’t be choosers, so if staying in some kind of manufacturing environment is what gets me there, I’ll take it.

“Try the trades” I did. My first apprenticeship interview score last time was a 74, for the electrician's union so that was a wrap as I need minimum of 90. I can’t even retry because I need either to fulfill work or schooling to retry and I can’t really leave my current job to do that.

A few months ago I applied to another branch, the IBEW Sound & Communication apprenticeship, and scored in the high 80s, which from everything I’ve read is a strong score. I still haven’t been called. Someone who scored in the low 80s was already called and accepted. Someone who scored one point above me dropped out, which would make you think I’m right next but alas, nothing. Unlike most other unions, they don’t publish rankings, so there’s no way to see where I stand or why I keep getting passed. When I posted about it in the apprenticeship sub, a few people suggested it might be nepotism, connections, or something shady. I can’t prove that, but I’m having a hard time coming up with another explanation. Has anyone here been through this or have any experience with IBEW Local 332? This would honestly be the answer to my problems, but I can't get in. I’ve also looked at wastewater operator apprenticeships and the elevator union, but they all seem to be closed.

“Just move” Honestly, I would. I’ve applied to jobs out of state here and there and I still get squat. I really think it’s a me problem. I don’t feel like I have the kind of skills that let someone just pick up, move to a lower cost of living state, and land on their feet. If no one wants me there either, I might as well keep pushing here where at least I have a job.

Some good news, sort of: I have a potential new job at about 70k, and I’m waiting on the offer letter. It's quite different though as it has "Sales" in the title and I've no experience with that, but it's something. That’s the most I’ve ever made and a solid 20k jump! But I’ve run the numbers many times, and my family needs about 90k from me to be comfortable. I know 90k or even 100k isn’t a lot to many people here. Honestly, I’d be happy to make that amount for the rest of my life. I just can’t figure out how to get from here to there.

The family I do have doesn’t make it easier. My parents’ generation came over from Vietnam, and my aunts and uncles are all very proud of their kids, which I get. But one of my uncles brings it up every chance he gets: how much his kids make, how easy their jobs are, the benefits, 100k+ fully remote, all the traveling. My aunt shows me pictures of her daughter having fancy dinners with her boss and the house they just bought. I smile and nod, but honestly, I’m done. It’s hard to sit there get this kind of crap rubbed in my face.

So my question: At my current job at a sheetmetal company, I handle drawing deviation requests, first article inspection discrepancies, and supplier quality filings for semiconductor equipment customers. I fix manufacturing work orders, check specs, and dig through inspection data try to resolve quality issues. I’m comfortable with Excel, office, computers, etc. and data analysis from my degree (which I graduated with two years ago, right as AI started pounding that field, so it’s paperweight practically), and I’m usually the go to between for our internal teams and the customer on technical issues.

With that background, is there a hack, a certification, or a field I should get training in to bridge that last gap to 90k or even 100k? I’m willing to put in the work. I just need to know where to aim. I wanted to do this post here because I know you folks in the bay area of all people know the area the best, professionally and personally.

Thanks again

PS: I love you guys, but you have no idea what it does to my stomach when I scroll past posts like “I make 170k, am I going to survive here?” or “What’s a good place to live on a 160k salary?” Come on, brother.

How is this possible? What is the point of the state suing pge if they are legally allowed to cripple their customers to pay off the lawsuit?

Pets & Animal Services Please help if you see this at the beach!

I was at Montara beach in Pacifica yesterday and saw a Common Murre sea bird in distress. We called the Marine Mammal Rescue center, but they are over stressed with hundreds of calls a day. Thankfully the Penninsula Humane Society wildlife center does accept birds. I gently placed a blanket over the birds body making sure its wings were held in place and that it could breath. I didn’t have a quiet ventilated dark box , which is ideal transport method if you do find a distressed animal,

Today I went back to montara beach and found ANOTHER bird in the same condition. I also saw so many dead seabirds.

I write this post to encourage you to transport these birds to the Penninsula Humane society if the Marine Mammal Center cannot help. My heart breaks to think of them suffering on the beach or getting attacked by dogs etc., If you have a free day I encourage you to go to this beaches and keep your eye out for them.

Events, Activities & Sports Lorenzo Theatre Marquee Lighting Ceremony - Thurs, Oct 15, 2026

The historic Lorenzo Theatre in San Lorenzo, a $23 million restoration project, turned on its lights for the first time in 44 years since it shuttered in 1982. Amazing work to all involved! What an honor and privilege to witness this historic moment for our community. Originally built in 1947, the theatre will once again re-open to patrons for film screening and live performances in 2027. Restoration and remodeling will complete in December 2026, and interior tours will begin in January 2027; featuring completely restored hand-painted murals by the late Dutch muralist Anthony Heinsbergen. At the time of his passing, he had decorated over 757 theatres nationwide, including the Hollywood Pantages Theatre (Los Angeles), Orpheum Theatre (San Francisco), and Paramount Theatre (Oakland).

Food, Shopping & Services Where do you upcycle niche electrical appliances?

• Upvotes

I have an induction cooktop that is hard to donate

Restore won’t take it because it’s got too much glass wear

Randos won’t take it because it’s a cooktop and not a freestanding stove. And not a countertop plugin.

I’ve posted it on local electrification forums (if you can suggest one, please let me know since I may not be on all of those) and diysolarforum.com

What else should I do to best effort this before I call for a Recology bulky item pickup?

Events, Activities & Sports Be careful driving on the passing lanes of westbound 580 between Hopyard Rd and San Ramon Rd. I got a flat tire due to metal debris.

In a twisted series of ironic events, I fell victim to metal debris on the roadway. I got a flat tire. I have already warned CHP via their non emergency line and want to warn you all here too.

Stay safe.

Food, Shopping & Services another doc rec question. long ebv issues

• Upvotes

Hi there, anyone had luck with doctors in the bay that have helped with lingering symptoms (several months after) an EBV/mono infection? Open to functional medicine doctors or non-Western medicine based alternatives but I don't make much and need to be wise about where I throw my savings at. I read about the Center for Complex Diseases online, seems like one decent option but would appreciate some names of individuals too.

I've got a good PCP at Sutter, but this virus has managed to thrown every system in my body so off balance and I need someone who can really look at things holistically with me. Still dealing with significant fatigue, weird allergy like flare ups, and more. Also open to hearing from people who have recovered from long post-infection issues and what was helpful to you.

Thanks! And p.s. to all those dealing with chronic illness and such -- keep on keeping on, I'm inspired by the strength I see in others overcoming and managing health challenges every day.

Does anyone know of soccer fields that have lights in South Bay or even Fremont/Peninsula that are open to the public and have lights on until at least 9 pm?

Events, Activities & Sports laid-off weekday hiking group (monday @ marin headlands in mill valley, california)

Post image
121 Upvotes

if you're navigating a lay-off or are between opportunities, come clear your head and connect with folks who are in the same boat 🤝🏼

this monday, we’re hitting the trails in rodeo beach in mill valley, california for a hike.

  • when: monday, oct 19 @ 11 am
  • stats: 5.2 mi loop / 1049 ft gain

grab your spot and see the full details here:

https://partiful.com/e/62Ot8dCW6Nq98sklvd9A

hope to see y'all there!

(hike in the pic was at tilden regional park in orinda, california)

inb4 FAQs:

  • Do you hike in one big group?
    • Normally, we split into smaller groups based on desired pace and stagger each group's start time by 5 minutes. These groups ultimately split into even smaller groups. Faster groups go first to create more space on the trail. This hike is different as we're being granted access by the stewards of this beautiful ranch preserve.
  • Why on Mondays?
    • Trail traffic is very low on Mondays, making it easier to accommodate a group like this.
  • Does your community only do hikes?
    • No, (un)PTO is a community of people across the US in career transition. While our claim to fame is group hikes, we do other things like co-work, help each other with our job search, and do other fun things like coffee hangs, bike rides, and of course, eat food. 😋
  • Can people with jobs join too?
    • Yes, but only if you realize that most of the people in this community are in career transition and act accordingly, for instance: offer a referral, connect them to someone in your network, and maybe don't complain about how work sucks. 😅

Food, Shopping & Services Where can I find good dipping ramen?

The other day I tried Hironori cold dipping ramen and it was amazing. I also tried another restaurant in San Mateo and it was good too. Is there any good ramen restaurant selling dipping noodles?
