Moving to San Francisco or the Bay Area? Read this first!

Hey /r/askSF!

In 2024, the sub has doubled in size, growing to 113K+ subscribers. With more subscribers, there's a ton more traffic and posts. One of the most popular topics is moving to SF and, in turn, these posts are the most commonly removed. There's been a noticeable increase in posts that boil down to "I'm moving to the city, where should I live?" that provide little to no information. To ensure OP's receive quality recommendations and to prevent endless comment loops, we're requiring all Moving-to-SF posts to include the following information:

  • Budget
  • Roommate status (solo, splitting rent w/ partner, seeking roommates, etc.)
  • Desired neighborhood(s) or preferred neighborhood amenities (dining, shopping, noise, etc.)

We recommend that OP's provide additional information such as:

  • Commute consideration
  • Housing preference (mom and pop landlords, condo, managed apt complexes, SFH rentals, etc.)
  • Additional personal preferences (pets, garage access, density, weather, etc.)

We're a small mod team so we are asking you, the community, to help up identify these posts! If you spot a moving submission that should have more information, please report the posts, select the breaking AskSF's rules, and select "Vague, overly broad, or low information" as the reason. We'll review the report and potentially ask OP to repost with more info.

Here's to more questions answered in 2024 and beyond!

NFL Team Bars of San Francisco (Mega Thread)

With NFL season starting, I thought it would be useful to put together a current list of which SF bars are unofficial/official homes for specific NFL fanbases.

I'm specifically looking for places where fans of that team regularly gather, not just sports bars that will put the game on.

Comment with:
Team — Bar — Neighborhood

I'll keep editing the list as people confirm places.

NFC West

  • 49ers — Pretty much all over? Or is there handful that are solid?
  • Seahawks — Danny Coyle's -- Haight
  • Rams — zekis - nob hill
  • Cardinals — TBD

NFC North

  • Vikings — Bell Tower — Russian Hill
  • Packers — Local Tap - SOMA * Ha-Ra -- Tenderloin
  • Bears — The Bar on Dolores - 1600 Dolores @ 29th St * Monoghan’s in the Marina
  • Lions — Stoa (maybe not ideal, check comments)

NFC East

  • Eagles — Jake's Steaks on Buchanan * Kezar Pub - Cole Valley
  • Cowboys — TBD
  • Giants — Aces
  • Commanders — Redjack Saloon (maybe small)

NFC South

  • Saints — Tupelo - North Beach
  • Buccaneers — TBD
  • Falcons — TBD
  • Panthers — Greens Sports Bar (maybe) -- Russian Hill

AFC West

  • Raiders — TBD
  • Broncos — Nickie's in Lower Haight
  • Chiefs — Buzz Works on 10th in SOMA
  • Chargers — TBD

AFC North

  • Steelers — Shanghai Kelly’s - Polk -- Russian Hill * Rudi's (formerly Giordano Bros) on 16th (unreliable?)
  • Ravens — Standard Deviant (14th st) - Mission
  • Bengals — Bus Stop - Cow Hollow
  • Browns — R Bar - Polk

AFC East

  • Bills - North Star - North Beach
    • New bar/arcade at 4740 mission st -- Excelsior
  • Pats - Connecticut Yankee - Connecticut & 17th St - Potrero Hill
  • Dolphins — blue light - union st
  • Jets — The Wreck Room

AFC South

  • Texans — TBD
  • Colts — TBD
  • Jaguars — TBD
  • Titans — TBD

I'll update the post as people add/confirm bars. If a place used to be a team bar but isn't anymore, call that out too.

catcalling in the mission

any other 20 something girls (or literally anyone😭) experience so much catcalling in the mission near 24th street?? seriously can’t leave my apartment without someone saying something weird to me. just curious if it’s this rampant in any other parts of the city? seriously considering moving cause of it :( I don’t necessarily feel unsafe but uncomfortable and not sure how to handle it.

Movers sf

Hey all, who are some more affordable movers for moving in sf?? I only need a few big things transported around the city, van or U-Haul accessible and don’t want to pay a bunch of fees for an app or some moving service. I’m a college kid who can’t drive and would like help physically moving heavy items like bed, couch, dresser and transportation to and from destinations so I can join. I’d gladly pay like $200 for a couple hours worth of quick lugging and transporting , good thing is my old and new apartment are within the same neighborhood so super close by to one another. Grateful for any tips or affordable rates.

Department of Building Inspection Complaint

I like my building, but they have been taking over a month to repair something that should have been repaired before I even moved in.

1) has anyone ever made one of these complaints to the Department of Building inspection to force something to be fixed? Can you tell me your experience?

2) I would like to renew my lease, I don’t want a crazy rent hike, but I also don’t think it’s fair that my stuff is not being fixed in a timely manner. Am I ruining my renewal by making a DBI complaint?

Building run by large property management company.

Thanks for the help and insight.

Non sexual Bath house tips

I am stoked to be visiting San Francisco next week weekend for a concert. I’ve been several times but never visited a bathhouse. Curious on folks experiences at them in regards to massage and spa treatments.

Archimedes Banya-

Hammam Body Wash and Scrub - is this done nude and out in the communal areas like at Korean spas? Or is it in a separate area for privacy or maybe you wear shorts? I know it’s co-ed and clothing optional instead of required nudity like a K-spa so figured it may be different for the body scrub aspect.

Venik-same questions as the body wash but also which do you prefer?

Kabuki Spa

Bliss Bath-is this done out in the open or in private? For the bath wash do you do this nude or wear a swim suit?

Treatment service -all are so unique. Any recommendation or recs for good male therapists?

Imperial

Reviews seem pretty poor unless anyone wants to share good experiences?

Other Places to Recommend?

Thanks everyone!

There are too many issues to track. What voter guides are you using?

Bonus points if they are slightly funny and blunt

haunted stuff

I'm looking for haunted house/neighborhood tours, the kind that are showcasing history blended with ghost stories, alleging real ghosts. They should be located anywhere in the greater bay area. I already know about Winchester. (Not currently looking for the kind of pop up haunted stuff that's just actors jump scaring you--exclusively looking for the ones that mix in history.) I've found posts about things from years ago but am struggling to determine what still exists. Happy spooky season! TIA

Restaurant owners of SF, how's your business in the last few months?

I own a bakery, and it's been brutal since the summer. We were doing quite well last year, right up until May this year. In fact, May was our best month. Then sales dropped around 10% in June, July, and August. Maybe people travel, kids are out of school, I thought. It happened last year too, though not by 10%, but okay.

Then in September, and so far in October, sales dropped another 5%. If you own a restaurant, you know that just a 5% drop can kill you when all your fixed costs stay the same or go up (in fact, minimum wage went up to $19.61 starting July 1). I don't know the reason. Kids are back in school, right? People are back at work, right?

My only guess is that the economy is tough right now. Gas prices are high, a lot of people got laid off, so they're spending less?

How's your business doing?

Should we get permits for our restoration work?

After a termite infestation, we had a contractor open our walls to see the extent of the damage, which turned out to be much worse than expected, with mold, rot, etc. Our house is about 100 years old so it's not surprising that a lot of damage has accumulated, but it was a shock. The repair estimate is $85,000.

The contractor says that it is up to us whether to get permits. He advised against it because it could open a can of worms, where we would have to do additional work that is not really needed could be hit with fines if it was not done quickly enough. Additionally, there is the risk that they would require us to move out of the house while the work was done.

My husband has seen the damage, and the contractor seems trustworthy. He has five stars on Google with many reviews. Still, we'd like to get others' opinions about whether to bring in the city.

We think we have imminent collapse coverage through our home insurance, so we might also bring them in, in case that matters.

UPDATE: I appreciate all the people who took the time to give helpful advice. We have decided to pull permits.

Visiting SF for Halloween weekend this year &

Hi all! I will be solo traveling up to SF for Halloween this weekend and am kind of super nervous-excited for it. I usually go to a new city each year for Halloween but this is a first in terms of going solo. I was recommended Dance O Ween and Castro but just wanted to see if there was anything to keep my eyes out for? Anyone else going solo to any fun events? I definitely love a good spot to go out dancing.

Why is it cheaper to do a 1 bed apartment than split a 2+ here?

Hey yall. Ive been apartment hunting for a while, currently living in east bay. I wanted to move into the city with a couple of friends, as I dont really like living alone... but boy, are prices kicking my ass.

That said, I noticed its cheaper to get a studio or a one bedroom than have us all split a larger apartment. Why is that? Is there less 2+ available?

Edit: I am looking in generally the same places, I want to have somewhat easy access to bart so mainly mission and soma, but also looking in Chinatown, northbeach, nob hill, areas of the tenderloin...

Ive found that price per bedroom is usually $500-800 more a month in multi-bedroom apartments than 1 beds or studios. I guess im just surprised as in previous cities Ive lived in, a larger apartment or duplex with a couple roommates is the way to save money. I think im better off just getting studios and 1 beds near eachother.

Restaurants and bars for being able to hear your friends?

So many places have hard surfaces and/or loud music and I can't distinguish the voice of the person I'm next to. Any spots to recommend with carpeted floors or other sound dampening help? The Richmond has curtains around tables that are wonderful, but it's a little outside our usual budget. I know bourbon and branch used to enforce the speak-easy part of speakeasies, are there any others that do as well? We often go on weeknights or earlier hours to try to catch less busy times, but every once in a while it's nice to go out on a Friday or Saturday night and I'm hoping to make a list of places to try.

Newborn mini photo session

Hi! I’m having a baby in January and wanting to do a mini newborn photo session once baby comes. Either at the hospital or at our home after. Every photographer in the area seems to be charging so much. Looking for a recommended photographer around $300. I don’t need a full shoot. Just a few quality photos!

Where should I stay for a winter trip upstate? (Mendocino, Northern Sonoma, Souther Humbolt)

Hello everyone,

Like many of you, I need a break from the hustle and bustle of the city and am planning a trip for around a week this Winter to one of the aforementioned counties to decompress, not look at screens, and larp as Thoreau for a bit before returning to reality. What I'm looking for specifically is a place to stay (hotel, airbnb, bed and breakfast) that is:

  1. Close to the coast and redwoods

  2. Close to a town (Gualala, mendocino, point arena, etc.) but not directly in one

  3. Not immediately off Highway 1 (shouldn't be able to hear cars)

  4. Something with nice architecture, would be a huge plus if it had that Nor Cal hippie art nouveau revival back-to-the-land look from the late 60s early 70s (think Bolinas, Druid Heights, Salmon Creek Farm, etc-- not sure what the actual name is for this style) or just anything with a nice cozy vibe so I can feel like Thoreau

  5. Less than $200 a night, but could go higher for something truly special

However, I am struggling to find anything that meets all this criteria. Please let me know if you have any recommendations!

How does one get a doctor here?

Hoping to (hopefully) get into ucsf internal med clinic for primary care but it’s booked up for many months. I’m post transplant status (plus many other things) and just relocated to the Bay! Any insights?

Also— if one were to be having a medical emergency, which ER/hospitals are usually best to go to if you are a complex patient already? So worried about the probability of something bad happening with long wait times.

TIA!!:)

Looking for Post construction/counter grinding cleaner service to eliminate dust & clear air

Hello everyone

I just had a new induction cooktop installed and the installer had to grind a part of our granite counter to fit it in. He didn't make a containment and I am very concerned about the dust affecting my parent with a lung condition. I'm regretting this decision so much.

Can anyone recommend post-construction cleaning services in SF area that clean out dust, debris and also do something along the line of HVAC to clear air to make a space liveable again?

Thank you so much.

Any recommendations for open-air eating spots near the Castro Theater?

I've booked tickets for a gig there next February with a couple of mates but one has lung issues and won't eat indoors for fear of infection. Can anyone recommend a restaurant that seats people outdoors?

2 days in the city, couple in 30’s in febuafy

Flying in on a Saturday afternoon, leaving Tuesday late morning. Flying for a trip leaving our kids for the first time. it’s our second time to SF but it’s been 15 years and we were only there dor one day. What does everyone recommend? restraunts, coffee, bakeries, activities and must-do’s? My husband for sure wants to do Alcatrez. I haven’t booked lodging yet, but we plan to not rent a car and just use public transport. We love history, good (but not expensive) food, short hikes and beautiful sites.

Walnut Creek/Pleasant Hill BART to SF Kaiser commute?

Hi everyone, I recently applied for a position at the Kaiser on Geary.. it's a 40hr job and the hours are 7:30am-4pm M-F. I don't know if I'll get it but I'm just brainstorming the commute if I do agree to it.

I currently live by Treat Blvd in Walnut Creek, and it's just a 10-15min walk from my place to the Pleasant Hill Bart.

How bad is it in the mornings? I was thinking of just walking to PH Bart right when they open at 5am to try and get to work as early as possible. How reliable are the buses that early in the morning? I'll have to get off at Montgomery and either use the bus or Lyft/Waymo to go the rest of the way to the Geary Kaiser. I can imagine going home will be a challenge too. What do you guys suggest? I hate driving and trying to find parking in SF so I'm really trying to save my mental..

I know I'm really getting ahead of myself here since I literally just applied lol but I just wanted to know if something like this would be worth it.

For context I currently work at the Kaiser in WC two 4:30pm-1am shifts and one 1:30pm-10pm shift and it's really getting to me. I want to be awake in the mornings again :( My commute is 15-20mins at most! but there's just no hours to pick up right now and even if I try, I can't because I get off work late the day before. :/

It's gonna be a big change going from part time late shifts to full time early shifts.

Any feedback is appreciated!! Thanks in advance!!
