Pets & Animal Services Bella & Minnie are still looking for their Forever Home

Bella and Minnie are 4-year-old Ragdoll/Highlander mix sisters who have been through more changes than they deserve.

Their original family made the difficult decision to rehome them due to frequent moves, hoping they would find a forever home. Unfortunately, that placement fell through, and these sweet girls are looking for a family who will truly commit to them for life.

Despite everything, Bella and Minnie are incredibly sweet! They may be shy at first, but once they feel safe, they warm up beautifully. They love pets, attention, and being close to their people.

About Bella & Minnie:

4-year-old Ragdoll/Highlander mixes
Bonded sisters — must be adopted together
Spayed, vaccinated, and microchipped
Great with children of different ages 0-16
Affectionate once comfortable
Have not been around dogs

These girls deserve a stable, loving home where they can finally settle in and never have to start over again. We’re looking for a family who understands that adoption is a lifelong commitment.

Seriously interested and ready to adopt? Message me for our adoption application.

$300 rehoming fee for both of them.

Work & Housing Update: Honestly, I’m starting to wonder if I’m low-IQ or mentally slow. I simply cannot compete in the Bay Area in finding a decent paying job

Original post

About a year ago I posted here wondering if something was wrong with me because I couldn’t land a decent paying job in the Bay Area. It blew up way more than I expected, and a lot of you were kind enough to give real advice. I read every comment and took it, so I wanted to give an update.

Quick recap: I’m in East San Jose with my wife and toddler, with no family support at all. I got my job through my uncle after my mom passed in my early 20s. It was supposed to be temporary but almost 10 years later I’m still at the same company, making about 50k a year. Last time I described my job as document control (since it feels more akin to what I actually do), but to be fair to myself, I’ve worked my way up from a floor quality inspector to process engineer (or so they call it here).

Now regarding the advice that was given:

“Get interview help/maybe get screened.” A lot of you pointed at interviewing, and a few of you asked if I might be autistic. Since then, my wife and I have talked about it, and from all the years she’s known me, she is positive I might be neurodivergent. I’d need to get tested to know for sure, but if it’s true, it might help me understand why things like interviews feel so much harder for me than they seem to for other people. I’ve been working on my interviewing too. Honestly, I feel knowing whether I am or not is not going to do anything, idk. Interviewing is definitely a challenge though.

“Fix your resume and target better.” I tailored my resume with help offered last time and am currently using Harvard format and I’ve been applying nonstop, a few hundred applications so far, 3 to 4 a day whenever I can find the time. I’m using a job board that scrapes the web and aggregates new postings, I built boolean filters with this so I only see roles I’m actually qualified or close to qualified for, and I apply directly on the company site while the posting is still fresh. I thought all these tools would give me an edge, but alas, nothing. The funny part is that last time I could at least get screening interviews. Now I can’t even get those.

“Stay in manufacturing/apply at competitor jobs.” Last time I may or may not have said that I wanted out of manufacturing. At this point I don’t even care anymore. I just need the money. Beggars can’t be choosers, so if staying in some kind of manufacturing environment is what gets me there, I’ll take it.

“Try the trades” I did. My first apprenticeship interview score last time was a 74, for the electrician's union so that was a wrap as I need minimum of 90. I can’t even retry because I need either to fulfill work or schooling to retry and I can’t really leave my current job to do that.

A few months ago I applied to another branch, the IBEW Sound & Communication apprenticeship, and scored in the high 80s, which from everything I’ve read is a strong score. I still haven’t been called. Someone who scored in the low 80s was already called and accepted. Someone who scored one point above me dropped out, which would make you think I’m right next but alas, nothing. Unlike most other unions, they don’t publish rankings, so there’s no way to see where I stand or why I keep getting passed. When I posted about it in the apprenticeship sub, a few people suggested it might be nepotism, connections, or something shady. I can’t prove that, but I’m having a hard time coming up with another explanation. Has anyone here been through this or have any experience with IBEW Local 332? This would honestly be the answer to my problems, but I can't get in. I’ve also looked at wastewater operator apprenticeships and the elevator union, but they all seem to be closed.

“Just move” Honestly, I would. I’ve applied to jobs out of state here and there and I still get squat. I really think it’s a me problem. I don’t feel like I have the kind of skills that let someone just pick up, move to a lower cost of living state, and land on their feet. If no one wants me there either, I might as well keep pushing here where at least I have a job.

Some good news, sort of: I have a potential new job at about 70k, and I’m waiting on the offer letter. It's quite different though as it has "Sales" in the title and I've no experience with that, but it's something. That’s the most I’ve ever made and a solid 20k jump! But I’ve run the numbers many times, and my family needs about 90k from me to be comfortable. I know 90k or even 100k isn’t a lot to many people here. Honestly, I’d be happy to make that amount for the rest of my life. I just can’t figure out how to get from here to there.

The family I do have doesn’t make it easier. My parents’ generation came over from Vietnam, and my aunts and uncles are all very proud of their kids, which I get. But one of my uncles brings it up every chance he gets: how much his kids make, how easy their jobs are, the benefits, 100k+ fully remote, all the traveling. My aunt shows me pictures of her daughter having fancy dinners with her boss and the house they just bought. I smile and nod, but honestly, I’m done. It’s hard to sit there get this kind of crap rubbed in my face.

So my question: At my current job at a sheetmetal company, I handle drawing deviation requests, first article inspection discrepancies, and supplier quality filings for semiconductor equipment customers. I fix manufacturing work orders, check specs, and dig through inspection data try to resolve quality issues. I’m comfortable with Excel, office, computers, etc. and data analysis from my degree (which I graduated with two years ago, right as AI started pounding that field, so it’s paperweight practically), and I’m usually the go to between for our internal teams and the customer on technical issues.

With that background, is there a hack, a certification, or a field I should get training in to bridge that last gap to 90k or even 100k? I’m willing to put in the work. I just need to know where to aim. I wanted to do this post here because I know you folks in the bay area of all people know the area the best, professionally and personally.

Thanks again

PS: I love you guys, but you have no idea what it does to my stomach when I scroll past posts like “I make 170k, am I going to survive here?” or “What’s a good place to live on a 160k salary?” Come on, brother.

How is this possible? What is the point of the state suing pge if they are legally allowed to cripple their customers to pay off the lawsuit?

Food, Shopping & Services Bay Area transplants, what is a restaurant or food locations you really miss having them around here?

As a person who moved here from Chicago, I really miss Chicago Dog from Portillo's, Lou Malnati's, cheese curds from Culvers and controversial but I also miss having a Dunkin at a walkable distance or at a train station.

Events, Activities & Sports Lorenzo Theatre Marquee Lighting Ceremony - Thurs, Oct 15, 2026

The historic Lorenzo Theatre in San Lorenzo, a $23 million restoration project, turned on its lights for the first time in 44 years since it shuttered in 1982. Amazing work to all involved! What an honor and privilege to witness this historic moment for our community. Originally built in 1947, the theatre will once again re-open to patrons for film screening and live performances in 2027. Restoration and remodeling will complete in December 2026, and interior tours will begin in January 2027; featuring completely restored hand-painted murals by the late Dutch muralist Anthony Heinsbergen. At the time of his passing, he had decorated over 757 theatres nationwide, including the Hollywood Pantages Theatre (Los Angeles), Orpheum Theatre (San Francisco), and Paramount Theatre (Oakland).

In a twisted series of ironic events, I fell victim to metal debris on the roadway. I got a flat tire. I have already warned CHP via their non emergency line and want to warn you all here too.

Stay safe.

Events, Activities & Sports laid-off weekday hiking group (monday @ marin headlands in mill valley, california)

Post image
110 Upvotes

if you're navigating a lay-off or are between opportunities, come clear your head and connect with folks who are in the same boat 🤝🏼

this monday, we’re hitting the trails in rodeo beach in mill valley, california for a hike.

  • when: monday, oct 19 @ 11 am
  • stats: 5.2 mi loop / 1049 ft gain

grab your spot and see the full details here:

https://partiful.com/e/62Ot8dCW6Nq98sklvd9A

hope to see y'all there!

(hike in the pic was at tilden regional park in orinda, california)

inb4 FAQs:

  • Do you hike in one big group?
    • Normally, we split into smaller groups based on desired pace and stagger each group's start time by 5 minutes. These groups ultimately split into even smaller groups. Faster groups go first to create more space on the trail. This hike is different as we're being granted access by the stewards of this beautiful ranch preserve.
  • Why on Mondays?
    • Trail traffic is very low on Mondays, making it easier to accommodate a group like this.
  • Does your community only do hikes?
    • No, (un)PTO is a community of people across the US in career transition. While our claim to fame is group hikes, we do other things like co-work, help each other with our job search, and do other fun things like coffee hangs, bike rides, and of course, eat food. 😋
  • Can people with jobs join too?
    • Yes, but only if you realize that most of the people in this community are in career transition and act accordingly, for instance: offer a referral, connect them to someone in your network, and maybe don't complain about how work sucks. 😅

Food, Shopping & Services Where can I find good dipping ramen?

The other day I tried Hironori cold dipping ramen and it was amazing. I also tried another restaurant in San Mateo and it was good too. Is there any good ramen restaurant selling dipping noodles?

Events, Activities & Sports Looking for Bay Area knitting clubs (ideally close to Point Richmond)

I (27F) am living in Point Richmond now and am just feeling extremely lonely because I have no friends here and work from home. I enjoy knitting, gaming, and cosplay. I figured a knitting club might be a good place to start but if anyone knows of groups for my other hobbies that would be very welcome too.

Anyways I appreciate the help and hope to meet some of you soon 🫶

Work & Housing Tech Professional Nearing 50, resigning for severance, single earner. How to get affordable insurance and mental-health care in Santa Clara County?

I’m approaching 50 and will be leaving my IC engineering role at a small-to-medium-sized tech company toward the end of this year under a severance arrangement (the alternative is likely a PIP). As the sole earner for a family of four with limited financial runway, I’m concerned about managing expenses while looking for my next opportunity ( which honestly feels increasingly difficult given the current job market)

My biggest concerns are:

  • Health insurance : COBRA is expensive, and the cheapest Covered California plan I found was around $1,700/month. I’m also concerned about potential immigration implications of receiving subsidies.
  • Mental-health care: I need ongoing psychiatric care and medication management. Are there affordable providers in San Jose/Santa Clara County that offer continuity of care without requiring Medi-Cal?
  • Dental care : My dentist has recommended a root canal, estimated at $3,000. Are there reputable, lower-cost clinics or dental schools or other options in the area?
  • Self-pay vs. insurance: Has anyone managed medical and mental health expenses out of pocket instead of maintaining expensive insurance?

Looking through various other threads,I’ve seen Pacific Clinics, MayView, Bay Area Community Health, and Santa Clara Valley Healthcare mentioned. I’d appreciate feedback on affordability, wait times, and quality of care, along with recommendations for other sliding-scale or cash-pay providers.

Any practical advice, clinic recommendations, or personal experiences would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Events, Activities & Sports Looking for a badminton group

Hello! I’ll be visiting Redwood City for the entire November for work-related stuff, but I was hoping I could still stay active during that time.

Where I’m from, I’m a member of a badminton group that books several courts and organizes matches for the members based on skill level. Is there anything similar in the Bay Area?

I also searched around and found Bintang San Carlos is quite close to my apartment. I saw that they had a “drop-in” system where you pay $20 to enter and join courts. Is that a good option for a solo player? I’m a bit worried I’d have trouble joining a court since I don’t have a partner.

I’m not really sure about my skill level compared to people here, but my guess is I’m maybe High Beginner / Low Intermediate.

Thank you for any advice!

Scenes from the Bay no kings day is a good reminder that change takes more than holding a sign. come volunteer with us this saturday and help tackle illegal dumping! ✊ last week, we cleared 8,000 lbs while this man living in the encampment shared a burrito with his big dog. ❤️

at urban compassion project, we’re working to address illegal dumping, environmental neglect, and the needs of our homeless neighbors holistically, because all of these things are connected. people deserve clean, safe neighborhoods, access to basic necessities, and a community that actually shows up for them.

since january 2025, alongside 5,000 volunteers, we’ve cleared more than 1.7 million pounds of illegal dumping across oakland, berkeley, and the surrounding bay area. we bring volunteers together to tackle areas that have been neglected for years, from waterways and public spaces to encampments where people are constantly being dumped on and then blamed for the conditions around them. we work with the people living there, building relationships and making sure our cleanups support the community.

we also do weekly distributions of food, water, clothing, hygiene supplies, pet food, and other essentials to people living in encampments. we’ve supported thousands of people this year through those distributions. showing up consistently helps us understand what people need and build the trust that makes longer-term support possible.

that same approach led us to open compassion threads with our partners, a free clothing store and community space in downtown oakland. we’re getting clothing into the hands of people who need it, keeping usable items out of landfills, and bringing life into an otherwise underused storefront. nothing is for sale, ever.

between august 8 and september 16, compassion threads welcomed 365 guests, distributed 2,012 clothing items, and diverted 1,563 pounds from landfills. among the people we surveyed, 69% reported food insecurity, 65% reported housing insecurity, and 56% weren’t living in a home they owned or rented. among those who reported their income, half earned less than $15,000 a year and 90% earned less than $50,000. these numbers show how much need exists, including among people whose struggles aren’t always visible.

alongside this immediate work, we’re pushing for systemic change: better access to waste disposal, greater public works capacity, accountability for illegal dumping, and investment in neighborhoods that have been repeatedly overlooked. we’re also working toward more beautification and urban farming projects to help keep cleared spaces cared for and discourage dumping from returning.
we do this with a small team, volunteers, community partners, and grassroots donations, without city funding. our goal is to connect immediate relief with long-term prevention, so the work we do each week helps build healthier neighborhoods and a community with the capacity to keep showing up for one another.

Work & Housing Hello! Would you recc Kaiser in SF?

My new job is offering me Kaiser HMO. Curious to know what the wait time for appointments is in Kaiser for a couple of services I feel like I'd need access to regularly:

- frequent bloodwork

- Physical therapy (chronic lower back pain)

- ENTs/pulmonologist access

- Vision/Dental

- Mental Therapy (sporadic but just in case)

Kaiser seems more affordable and easier to use but I'm worried I might not be able to access healthcare if it's overbooked
