Moving to San Francisco or the Bay Area? Read this first!

Hey /r/askSF!

In 2024, the sub has doubled in size, growing to 113K+ subscribers. With more subscribers, there's a ton more traffic and posts. One of the most popular topics is moving to SF and, in turn, these posts are the most commonly removed. There's been a noticeable increase in posts that boil down to "I'm moving to the city, where should I live?" that provide little to no information. To ensure OP's receive quality recommendations and to prevent endless comment loops, we're requiring all Moving-to-SF posts to include the following information:

  • Budget
  • Roommate status (solo, splitting rent w/ partner, seeking roommates, etc.)
  • Desired neighborhood(s) or preferred neighborhood amenities (dining, shopping, noise, etc.)

We recommend that OP's provide additional information such as:

  • Commute consideration
  • Housing preference (mom and pop landlords, condo, managed apt complexes, SFH rentals, etc.)
  • Additional personal preferences (pets, garage access, density, weather, etc.)

We're a small mod team so we are asking you, the community, to help up identify these posts! If you spot a moving submission that should have more information, please report the posts, select the breaking AskSF's rules, and select "Vague, overly broad, or low information" as the reason. We'll review the report and potentially ask OP to repost with more info.

Here's to more questions answered in 2024 and beyond!

NFL Team Bars of San Francisco (Mega Thread)

With NFL season starting, I thought it would be useful to put together a current list of which SF bars are unofficial/official homes for specific NFL fanbases.

I'm specifically looking for places where fans of that team regularly gather, not just sports bars that will put the game on.

Comment with:
Team — Bar — Neighborhood

I'll keep editing the list as people confirm places.

NFC West

  • 49ers — Pretty much all over? Or is there handful that are solid?
  • Seahawks — Danny Coyle's -- Haight
  • Rams — zekis - nob hill
  • Cardinals — TBD

NFC North

  • Vikings — Bell Tower — Russian Hill
  • Packers — Local Tap - SOMA * Ha-Ra -- Tenderloin
  • Bears — The Bar on Dolores - 1600 Dolores @ 29th St * Monoghan’s in the Marina
  • Lions — Stoa (maybe not ideal, check comments)

NFC East

  • Eagles — Jake's Steaks on Buchanan * Kezar Pub - Cole Valley
  • Cowboys — TBD
  • Giants — Aces
  • Commanders — Redjack Saloon (maybe small)

NFC South

  • Saints — Tupelo - North Beach
  • Buccaneers — TBD
  • Falcons — TBD
  • Panthers — Greens Sports Bar (maybe) -- Russian Hill

AFC West

  • Raiders — TBD
  • Broncos — Nickie's in Lower Haight
  • Chiefs — Buzz Works on 10th in SOMA
  • Chargers — TBD

AFC North

  • Steelers — Shanghai Kelly’s - Polk -- Russian Hill * Rudi's (formerly Giordano Bros) on 16th (unreliable?)
  • Ravens — Standard Deviant (14th st) - Mission
  • Bengals — Bus Stop - Cow Hollow
  • Browns — R Bar - Polk

AFC East

  • Bills - North Star - North Beach
    • New bar/arcade at 4740 mission st -- Excelsior
  • Pats - Connecticut Yankee - Connecticut & 17th St - Potrero Hill
  • Dolphins — blue light - union st
  • Jets — The Wreck Room

AFC South

  • Texans — TBD
  • Colts — TBD
  • Jaguars — TBD
  • Titans — TBD

I'll update the post as people add/confirm bars. If a place used to be a team bar but isn't anymore, call that out too.

How friendly are the Ocean Beach fire pits to newcomers?

This Saturday, my wife and I are planning to park near Ocean Beach early in the morning, Uber to Candlestick Point, and hike the Crosstown Trail. Afterwards, we'd love to catch the sunset and enjoy a bonfire.

I doubt any of our friends will be interested in getting to the beach early enough to snag a fire pit, so I'm wondering how receptive people generally are to sharing.

Would it be pretty reasonable to approach a group that's already set up and ask if they have room for two more? Obviously, we wouldn't expect anyone to say yes, but I figured it couldn't hurt to ask.

Would love your thoughts!

ER Nursing in San Francisco

Hello all,

I am wondering if there are any working SF ER nurses in this subreddit. I would like to pick your brain about how your unit approaches RN’s who are really wanting to switch specialties.

For some context, I am an LD nurse that is quickly falling out of love with the specialty. In OB, I get the most job satisfaction out of triaging patients and working in emergency scenarios. In a recent performance evaluation, my management let me know that they were not happy with that sentiment. I’m taking this as a sign that I am in the wrong specialty and I would love to network with ER’s in the city to see if I could finally follow what I’m truly interested in.

Edit: Too sleepy after my shift to reply to all the helpful comments but if anyone commenting is reading this thank you sm for the advice!! I really appreciate you taking the time to respond.

Trying to come up with a bulletproof list for touring apartments without getting scammed

Hey folks! As the title said I’ve been hyper aware of scams on zillow/craigslist lately and have been brainstorming what I need to check off when touring and applying. So far I’ve been verifying that:

- The realtor is a real person and the information on the listing/who contacted me matches what I can find online
- When touring in person, verify the person with the keys showing me around is also the same person who contacted me online
- Looking for Zillow verified tags under listing agents (although not a huge factor)
- Always touring in person before paying or giving any private info away
- Reverse image searching photos of the listing to see if they come up anywhere else under a different address

Anything I can add here? Thanks!

Divorce mediation attorney for amicable separation in SF?

My spouse and I are considering an amicable divorce and would prefer to work things out through mediation rather than having to go through a lengthy court process. Hoping to find a divorce mediaton attorney who can help us navigate the process fairly especially with finance and assets division. Any recommendations? would also love to hear how other people handle the process if you've been through the same.

What was the most interesting/fascinating Halloween costume you've seen?

• Upvotes

A long time ago, when I lived in LA and did Halloween in West Hollywood, I saw one of the best costumes.

If you remember Alfred Hitchcock's "The Birds": the guy was dressed up in the Tippi Hedren gray suit along with the blond hair and that specific haircut. (Great make up job - he looked like her.) Attached to him from the waist up was a phone booth (which encased his entire body) with seagulls bloody and smashed into the glass. He would twirl through the crowd screaming. It was THE funniest and most entertaining costume I had ever seen. Even when I think about it, now, decades later, I laugh out loud. I have the picture somewhere in a photo album! 😀

Creative multi-day workshops or art intensives?

Hi! I used to live in San Francisco, I currently live in Washington but I miss the city every day and always try to make any excuse to come back and visit. I'm not a professional artist by any means but I love learning new creative skills and doing cool workshops. I have this dream of going back to SF for a week or two someday and doing some sort of creative workshop in that time, one that could take up at least a few days. Does anyone know of any sort of art center that hosts multi-day workshops? Painting, drawing, woodworking, pottery, whatever! I just want some excuse to go back and learn a cool new skill while getting to wander around in my free time. Thanks!

EDIT: wow!! Such amazing suggestions!! Thanks everyone, will do some research into all of these. I really appreciate it

Debating move to outer Richmond from Duboce

I’m a long time S.F. resident and am considering moving to the Outer Richmond from Duboce to have more space, quiet, and nature access. I do love Duboce and spend much of my time today in lower haight / haight and the mission. I’m trying to evaluate whether the tradeoffs with Duboce and Outer Richmond are worth it if I’m looking for a place to be longer term (I’m in my late 30s for context). I’d love to hear from people in the outer Richmond what they like about it and whether / what they’d recommend I consider when thinking of moving there 🙏

Gyms: Equinox vs. Bay Club vs. FitnessSF

Hiya hiya lovely SF Folks! 🕺🏻

I see a ton of threads having people compare Live Fit Gym to FitnessSF, but I haven’t seen many threads talking about Equinox or the Bay Club.

I’m thinking of 3 options for myself:
1. Equinox on Market
2. Bay Club at the Embarcadero
3. FitnessSF on Polk (since it’ll be new!)

Things I Care About:
- my fitness… well, duh… 😅
- possibly making friends at the gym / workout partners
- swimming or getting back into playing Tennis (either)
- possible personal training down the line
- cost effectiveness for what I get (they’re all expensive)

I used to go to the Equinox on Market and honestly loved it, but then stopped my membership when I got a work membership for free to FitnessSF. I also loved FitnessSF, but unfortunately got laid off recently, so there goes that membership! Now that November is approaching, I’d like to start somewhere new while I work on finding myself a new job.

Bay Club is the only gym I haven’t been to… but in general, I wanted everyone’s thoughts. Pros, cons, the whole nine yards.

What’s the best gym for downtown SF, and why? 🤔
Thank you for helping me decide! Seriously!

SF Late Nights

Hey yall, been a while since I’ve been to one of the classic SF late nights but i wanna hit one again soon!

I know some of them have closed/moved in the last several years - for example, I used to love the one in Japan town and the one by great northern, but I heard they’re no longer poppin’. And the one on eddy might have moved?

Can someone share the addresses for the current late nights with me? Feel free to DM me if you’d rather not post them publicly

Thank you 🙏

Who can you recommend for a proper skin fade style haircut?

I've gone to two guys and one guy did a good job but it wasn't a fade. It was okay but I like how I look with a fade. The other guy I just went to was absolutely awful where he missed some hairs that are still long! It's not a skin fade and it's uneven. My hairline is uneven, too where there are a bunch of hairs I had to cut because they're still long because he missed them. Can anyone PLEASE recommend me a hairstylist that specializes in skin fades?

Question about a confusing driveway citation and neighbor dispute in SF

Yesterday evening, my wife and I were relaxing at home, watching Love is Blind, when we heard a loud banging on the gate. Our neighbor across the street confronted us, claiming that we had blocked his driveway by parking his car there. We firmly denied the accusation, stating that we hadn’t called the authorities. To us, as long as we could get in and out of our driveway, we didn’t mind the situation.
Here’s some context: the previous owner of the house had shaved off some of the curb, which made it appear as though he was blocking the dip in the driveway. This is likely why the person who issued the citation believed we were violating the rules.
Despite the situation, we didn’t call the authorities or report the incident. I explained to him that the current parking spot was acceptable, and that we had a ticket for blocking the driveway.
The next day, we took our other car, which was slightly in our driveway, but that was fine since it was our driveway and we had the ticket.
It felt very coincidental that we received a ticket for blocking our own driveway. So, I called the SFMTA and asked them why I would be issued a violation for my own driveway. They informed me that the citation had been issued this morning from my address. This was very suspicious.
I went over to confront my neighbor, and he tried to dodge the issue by suggesting that I should fix the curb and that someone had called on him. I’m relatively new to the neighborhood and was trying to resolve the situation amicably. I told him that I wasn’t out to get anyone and that I was equally frustrated with the situation. However, it was petty of him to spite us and impersonate our address to issue us a ticket.
I don’t know what else to do or how to improve the situation. I’m calling SFMTA to clear my own ticket tomorrow, hope it works

Any advice on how to handle or if I should do something about someone impersonating my address?

SF tenant rights: What can I do if the current subtenants won't let me move back into an apartment I'm still named on the lease? Looking for low-cost legal help

I'm trying to figure out the safest and most legally sound way to return to an apartment in San Francisco where I'm still named on the original lease as a master tenant. I'm looking for advice about my options if the current occupants don't cooperate, as well as recommendations for free or low-cost tenant legal services.

Some background:

  • My former spouse and I were the two named tenants on the original lease.
  • I moved out in 2025 due to personal safety circumstances regarding the situation with my ex and sent the property manager written notice that I intended to vacate. However, I never received any written or verbal confirmation that I was released from the lease, and to my knowledge, the landlord never formally removed me.
  • Our divorce judgment later assigned the lease and its associated debt to my former spouse between us. I understand that this may not automatically release me from liability to the landlord. My former divorce lawyer recommended I direct this towards someone who can help with tenant/housing rights.
  • My former spouse continued living in the apartment and paying rent until recently. I recently learned he has now moved out of state, and several other people are living there under arrangements I don't fully understand.
  • The property manager has told me that if there isn't an occupying master tenant, they intend to pursue eviction of the current occupants or increase the rent to market rate, stating it would be over $8,000 (up from the current rent of approximately $4600) in February.
  • October rent appears to be unpaid. The occupants told me they had collected it and attempted to pay it, but their checks were returned. The property manager quoted me a balance of $4,712.38, which includes rent, a late fee, and a small unexplained charge. The online payment portal is not accepting payments. The landlord said it would need to be paid by check via one of the master tenants.

I'm trying to find out whether I can resume living in the apartment under the original lease and how to do so without unnecessarily disrupting the other occupants or jeopardizing my legal position. Ideally, I'd like to resolve the rent situation and work out a reasonable transition, potentially using the living room temporarily if that's lawful and practical.

My main questions are:

  1. If I am still legally a tenant under the original lease, what are my options if the current occupants refuse to let me move back in or won't cooperate?
  2. Would I need to pursue a formal legal process to regain access or establish my right to occupy? What kind of attorney handles this?
  3. Can the landlord lawfully raise the rent to market rate because I moved out, even if I'm still named on the original lease?
  4. Should I pay the October rent directly to the landlord while I clarify the status of the lease? What should I do if the subtenants refuse to pay their portions of the rent? What precautions should I take?
  5. Are there any free or sliding-scale tenant attorneys, legal clinics, or other services in San Francisco that can help with a complicated master-tenant/subtenant situation?

I've already contacted several tenant organizations and have more legal consultations scheduled, but I'm trying to understand my options and find someone who can help me navigate this quickly. I'm on a limited budget and understand this matter could be quite urgent. I would especially appreciate recommendations based on firsthand experience with similar situations.

I'm not looking to force anyone out or create conflict. I want to understand my legal rights, protect the existing tenancy if possible, and find a lawful way forward.

Thank you for any guidance or referrals.

Best paneer tikka masala in the city?

This is one of my favorite meals but the difference between a delicious paneer tikka masala and a bad one is toooo real. I’ve tried Rose and Om, I remember liking both well enough but don’t recall being particularly WOWed by either (although it’s been a while).

Edit- I am a TERRIBLE cook. Terrible. I’m asking for restaurant recs and not recipes for a reason 😭😭

Traveling to SF in Nov for Work - what's going on?

I will be in SF in early November for work and my wife will join me. We will have 1 night to ourselves, along with the afternoon preceeding the night as well as the time the next day until we fly home. It will be mid-week and the hotel I may be staying at is in the financial district.

I've been to SF several times before and my wife lived there but curious what a married couple could/should do on a tuesday night without kids. Already looking at the WaterBar for dinner. We want GOOD seafood as we live in AZ and good seafood is hard to come by. We are just excited to have alone time and want good food/drinks options.

What do you suggest/recommend?
