Rant [rant] got sent to the principal's office over rice
A couple weeks ago, me and a couple of friends founded an Asian Club at our school to have some fun and spread culture. As we were brainstorming of ideas on what to do for the club, we decided we wanted to do something food related. However, since we wanted to do something simple, someone came up with the idea of just bringing some rice. As an activity, we also thought about doing a rice eating competition to see who could eat a bowl of rice fastest. I know that this is absurd, but today, me and 4 other Asians who help run the club get called down to the principal's office over how the rice eating competition is perpetuating stereotypes and is somehow offensive. Keep in mind that this principal is white and he's talking to 6 asians about what's offensive and what's not for Asians. None of us Asians as well as our parents believe anything about a rice eating competition is racist at all. Personally, I think that rice is a staple of Asian culture, and I don't see how perpetuating the stereotype of rice for Asians is harmful at all. After all, literally 90% of all rice in the world is eaten in Asia, food also means "rice" in many Asian languages, and there are literal freaking rice gods in Asian culture.
Obviously, us 5 Asians plus our parents don't represent all Asians, but I feel like there's nothing offensive about what we did. I'd love to hear any input on this situation from other people so please feel free bash me in the comments if you disagree.
