I’m an ENTP, I have one sibling, my younger brother, he is an ENFP. And I’ve recently found myself in the most ridiculous family drama I’ve ever been involved in.
He was engaged. Wedding preparations were underway. Then his fiancée decided to postpone the wedding after choosing her ex-boyfriend.
Yes. Her ex.
For a long time, I’ve been listening to my brother complain about this woman. And when I say complain, I mean a whole collection of stories about how much he did for her.
Driving her to her graduation. Picking her up. Taking her parents places. Waiting from early morning until late at night. Apparently, there was even an occasion when he waited all day without being offered food. 😂 (I honestly kinda enjoy seeing him suffer tho)
Meanwhile, he kept insisting that she was a good person.
Okay. Interesting definition of a good relationship, but go on.
I listened. I let him vent. I didn’t immediately tell him what to do because, well, he’s an adult. If he wants to invest his time and energy into a relationship, that’s his decision.
But then the wedding situation happened, and I decided to tell our parents what had been going on.
And suddenly, guess who’s the problem?
Me.
Not the relationship drama. Not the decision to postpone the wedding after choosing an ex. Not the fact that our family was preparing for a wedding while all of this was happening.
Me. The person who reported the plot twist.
Apparently, I was supposed to listen to all the complaints, collect the information like a private investigator, and then take it to my grave.
Here’s what fascinates me about this situation: people will tell you everything that’s wrong with their lives, but the moment you do something about the information they’ve voluntarily given you, you’re suddenly a terrible person.
So let me get this straight.
You tell me the relationship is making you miserable. I listen. You tell me what she’s done. I listen. A major decision involving marriage blows up, and I tell our parents because I think they should know what’s happening.
Now I’m the traitor?
What exactly was the expected outcome here? Was I supposed to sit quietly, watch the wedding preparations continue, and pretend I knew absolutely nothing?
IAnd for the record, I didn’t make her choose her ex. I didn’t make her postpone the wedding. I didn’t manufacture these events for entertainment. I merely informed the relevant stakeholders that the project had encountered some rather signification.
I understand that my brother might be hurt, embarrassed, or angry. Fine. Feel whatever you need to feel. I’m not expecting him to be happy about the situation.
But I do find it fascinating that the anger has landed on me, the messenger, rather than on the circumstances that created this mess.
Maybe I should have asked his permission before telling our parents. That’s a fair argument, and I’m willing to examine it.
But I’m not going to pretend the underlying situation was perfectly fine just because the truth was inconvenient.
My question for other ENTPs:
Do you ever get tired of being treated like the villain simply because you’re willing to say out loud what everyone else would rather leave unspoken? And for those with ENFP siblings, is this a common conflict between different approaches to emotional situations, or is my brother simply upset that I refused to participate in keeping up appearances?
Because honestly, I’m open to criticism. I’m just not interested in accepting responsibility for a story I didn’t write, a decision I didn’t make, and a relationship I wasn’t even in. Like I may have delivered the news. But I didn’t create the news.
TL;DR: My ENFP younger brother’s fiancée chose her ex and postponed their wedding after he spent so much time and effort on her. After listening to him complain about their relationship for ages, I told our parents what was going on. Now he’s blaming me for exposing the situation. I know I might have crossed a boundary, but honestly? I’m kinda enjoying watching him suffer the consequences of his own choices. Am I the asshole? 💀
