Rant I almost killed Gunrock.

It was a cool October evening. A crisp ninety-degree breeze blew over the lush, emerald blades of astroturf grass in our glorious Health Stadium. The Eastern Washington Eagles had traveled 800 miles south to get personally dicked down repeatedly by Jordan Fisher in front of the entire nation on ESPN2. Spirits were high.

Our beloved mascot, Gunrock, was galloping and neighing up and down the stadium bleachers—his beautiful blue hair primary-color-mogging the red of the Eagles. I had just finished munching down a delicious California burrito. I’m new here to UC Davis. Like any new Aggie, when I saw Gunrock approaching me, I was beside myself. Electrified. Completely undone. I could feel the warmth of one of God’s greatest creations as he walked right in front of me, crossing through the bleachers below.

“Hi Gunrock!!” I shouted.

He whipped around, his luminous blue eyes meeting mine, and gave me an enthusiastic wave. They say that, in this cruel world, no good deed goes unpunished. Well, the cruelty cashed in. Gunrock’s large, powerful hooves were ill-suited to the delicate precision required to thread one’s way through the bleachers. He tripped. It was as if time slowed to a stop. All around, Aggies were frozen, cheerfully looking down at the field. Only Jordan Fisher was running quick enough to display any semblance of movement in this moment, like Quicksilver in Days of Future Past.

There was a look of pure, carnal fear in Gunrock’s eyes. I had recognized that look before. I realized that, like me, he was but a mere animal. A pony. I thought about a life he could have lived, unburdened by the mascot-industrial complex, racing through open meadows and eating ryegrass to his heart’s content. I thought about a life I could have lived if not for the conventions of modernity—basket weaving and daintily gathering nuts clothed only in skimpy strips of leather. But that world belongs to our ancestors. Here and now, I am a fully clothed student at the University of California, Davis, and Gunrock is my mascot. And I was about to be responsible for his death.

Only, that is not how the story ended. Time marched on. Gunrock did not tumble down, cracking his skull open on the seats below. He brilliantly caught his footing, Jordan Fisher scored another touchdown, and I did not become the new transfer student who killed our mascot. I did, however, see Death. It was standing on the field amidst the clashing bodies of football players, unbeknownst to all. In a whisper that carried through the space between us like cold wind through reeds, I heard It say:

“God made the meadow. You made the bleachers. But the grave makes no distinction.”

The stupidest prank that ever happened in Davis

Right after Carlos Dominguez murdered one student and David and tried to murder a homeless woman I was downtown.

I came back for the memorials for the student who died, there was still a deep fear that maybe they didn't get the right person.

There was somebody downtown who thought it was funny to go in and out of the bushes in a Michael Myers mask

I almost punched him in the face.

What a f\\ idiot.

Sometimes it just isn't funny

It was probably some tick tock prank but how f\\ stupid.

So what is the dumbest prank or the dumbest thing you've ever seen anybody do at davis?

Also rest in peace for the fallen.

Sacramento Linux Users Group meeting 10/20 (looking for people to share an Uber with).

So SacLUG, or Sacramento Linux Users Group is a really cool thing I found where people meet to talk about their systems, promote free software, and have a good time. This meeting is mainly to bring your GNU/Linux system along and talk about it or learn more from others. Here is the link to the website https://www.saclug.org/. The uber there is about 32 dollars for 4 people. I am looking for people who would like to come along. It is 6:30pm to 9:00pm.

EDIT

If you do not have a GNU/Linux computer but are interested in it, I will gladly help you in installing it and working through small bugs and issues.

Hey I’m new to ucd. Anyone know if there is a deaf community out here? As in they use ASL as their way of communicating in the group. I was apart of it in my home town and I miss it! Haven’t been able to find one yet

Want to practice sketching humans? Bring your art supplies and yourself! Who are we drawing? Each other! We'll take rotations holding poses for 2-5 minutes (longer is your choice) to get some casual live figure drawing practice. No more sneakily staring at someone across the coffee shop and hoping they won't move.

If drawing is not your thing but you'd like to come and model for us, you'll have our gratitude! Come hang out, read/nap/whatever and have art made of yourself!

We'll meet at the carousel by Natalie's corner at 1PM and then find a different spot to settle down. We won’t stay next to the carousel so if you're late, contact me so I can help you find us. We usually draw for an hour and a half.

You can read this post for more detail on what to expect: https://www.reddit.com/r/Davis/comments/1q7vx6l/draw_andor_get_drawn/

Taking 11 units?

Hi guys,

I dropped a class a few days and I’m down to 11 units. When I did it, I assumed that it wouldn’t really matter bc I’m graduating this quarter. However, I just started freaking out bc the part time deadline has passed and I guess I’d need to be registered as part time? Idk. Would it just put me on “academic probation” for my “next quarter”?

Should I be fine or should I try to re-register to this class? I hadn’t needed to take it so I just got rid of it lol. Ik it’s a bit late.

Rant Affordable haircuts for women with long curly hair??

I (f21) just moved to davis, and finding a hair stylist here is ridiculous. I have long, thick-ish curly hair that reaches my mid back. All the places i’ve see here so far charge extra for length and curl and even say within their pricing that an additional cost will be added to the base, and how much is added is up to them. Also, all of these places charge for the haircut only? Like, I will walk out with wet, unstyled hair? So on top of the base price of around 60-80$, i’m looking at additional cost for the length and thickness, additional cost for a curly cut, as well as an additional cost for a wash and style, plus tip. Not to mention hair coloring costing 200-300$. Does anyone else find this completely ridiculous?!?! I feel like i am going insane. In my hometown, the hairdressers charged a flat fee for any length wash, cut, and style, typically ranging 70-100$ with tip.

I have heard Ulta does good cuts, but I don’t see any bookings available for stylists. Does anyone have any experience with Ulta haircuts and colors? If anyone has any recommendations for a good curly cut for 100$ or less, please let me know! There’s no way i’m paying extra extra extra for a simple wash, cut, and style.

Other Lost Flash Drive at the Library

Post image
3 Upvotes

Hi everyone! I know this is a long shot, but I’m hoping someone might have found my missing USB flash drive at the library yesterday (Saturday).

I was on the first floor, using the computers at the third desk from the hallway (where your back faces the wall). There were also two guys sitting at the first two desks in the same row as me. I left around 5:30 PM, about 30 minutes before closing. I went back to the library today to ask if anyone had turned it in, but the front desk said they hadn’t received any lost USB.

I know for a fact that I put it safely in my bag before leaving, but for the life of me, I CANNOT find it anywhere in my bag or even in my room. It has my school folders, facebook albums from my old account, DSLR camera photos, and other important files saved on it, so I’m really hoping I can get it back 🥹🥹🥹

I attached a picture of what it looks like (SanDisk) in case anyone recognizes it or happened to see it yesterday or today (or maybe tomorrow huhu). It has my actual name as its name. If anyone found it or knows anything about it, please message me! I’d really, really appreciate it, thank you so much!!! 🫰

P.S. I’ll try looking for it again in my bag/room!

Financial Aid Uc ship health insurance assistance

So, like, I got my UC SHIP waived and audited, so I’m wondering if I’ll still be able to receive my health insurance assistance because I previously had it in my award package before waiving it.

Missing Wallet

If anyone has seen a wallet that has a painting on it and it's large and rectangular, please let me know by sending me a message. I was last at Woodstock's and Cane's on Friday around midnight. It has my student Id and my ID and lowkey everything. I called both places, and I haven't heard anything. Does anyone have any recommendations as well on what to do to find it? Pleaseee let me know; I'm actually stressing.

Frustrated with FAFSA

I got an email talking about needing to correct my 2026-27 FAFSA form but my issue is that I can't make any corrections because I've already said that I had a high school diploma and stated what high school I graduated from. I've also already contacted the financial aid office, and they didn't give me anything useful as well. Has anyone else ever had this issue? What do I do?

Could I get in

In state, competitive area, my school has like a 20-something percent acceptance rate with average admit GPA ~4.1 and enrolled GPA like a 3.9x-4.0x historically, high income Chinese female

UC GPA is 3.77UW/4.08CW/4.38W. No idea my rank, probably something like t25% on the UC GPA or smth but basically no ELC lol

Applied math major - relevant courseload includes Calc AB (A/A), AP Stats (B/A), Calc 2 (A), and I'm taking linalg and multivar rn. I got a B and C in freshman year math which isn't computed into my UC GPA but it's obviously still concerning.

Also some science honors and APs and a couple humanities APs and dual enrollments, but much less than others at my school have taken because I transferred from a high school that offered less (but it was mid-semester so my transcript is just from my current school for that whole year... long story) - Honors physics (A/B), AP Bio (A/A), APCSA (A), also took a sem of AP Chem over the summer (B). Taking the other semester of chem + both AP Physics C classes + a dual credit biotech class rn.

I got 5s on AB and Stats but I'm pretty sure they don't even look at TS for admissions lmao

Probably like 7.5/10 ECs, 5/10 awards, 7/10 PIQs (contains some relevant information about why my transcript is so messy - I transferred high schools 3x, it's a long story)

I have a fairly significantly lower cumulative GPA but also a 1550 SAT... test blind pmo because my cumulative GPA lowkey makes me disqualified for any good school that considers it so admissions are stressing me out
