Can someone tell me how to do it? How are edges counted?

Post image

I’ve frogged and restarted this several times because my count keeps coming up off. I’m getting three stitches per color, but should I be counting the turning chain as a stitch? I keep coming up one short every time I approach the edge somehow :/ idk how to even explain it lol

First attempt I'm wondering if I'm on the right track

Hey guys! I was hoping I could get some advice/help on wether I'm doing this right.

I've been trying to stick to 4 stitches per colour, but I'm struggling to see if things are working out, or if I'll have to frog and give it another go.

It feels like I've watched a mountain of YouTube videos, and blog articles but I still feel a bit lost

I'm using red heart super saver, in the colour pink camo.

Thanks for any help, you guys might give me :)

First attempt Advice needed: Am I doing this right?

This is my first attempt at a pooling scarf. I’m using red heart super saver pooling yarn in the color Haute and the moss stitch.

I’m trying to use Marly Bird’s tutorial on making this pattern but I’m still confused on how to handle turning the work.

There are six colors in the sequence. Red only appears once and so does Black. There are three stitches per color.

When I get to the end of a row, do I count the three stitches going around the corner, like so there’s 1 and 2 on the on the current row and then 1 on the next row for a total three? Or do I look at the beginning of the row and see how many of that color I started the row with?

Photos are attached, please help before I get too far in, and have to frog the entire thing (again).

Unplanned pooling Replicating accidental stripes?

Hello all! It was suggested that I post this here.

By the act of some benevolent (or perhaps malicious) god, on my first of a pair of fingerless gloves, I managed to accidentally create a striped pattern. This was seriously dumb luck but now I need to make the second one and it would be cool if the striping pattern returned. I’m using a 1x1 tubular cast on if that’s important.

Is there any way I can determine where to start the cast on in the color changing yarn to recreate what I did? I also included a pic of the first setup row for the cast on of the first glove and the yarn I’m using if thats helpful.

Alternatively, should I just let the yarn do as it will? It would lose its stripes after the increases anyways. I think it’ll be pretty regardless and maybe I’m overthinking this.

Thanks in advance!

Work in progress A different kind of planned pooling

I didn’t really like the way Caron Times Square was working up in argyle, so I tried something else!

So I was trying to follow "Repeat Crafter Me"s pattern for this yarn and I couldn't get it to work and I was getting really very frustrated so I plugged the stitch counts from the pattern into the calculator, found a count that worked at a size that worked for what I'm trying to make and it's not as square as the calculator but it's finally working at all.

I am pleased.

What yarn should I use? Looking for suggestions for a suitable pooling yarn for a moss stitch scarf. A lot of the recommended yarns on the pinned list here are no longer available since it was posted 6 years ago.

I'd like to make a pooled scarf (argyle, I guess) using moss stitch for my mother in law for Xmas. I'm not sure which yarn to choose! I'm open to pretty much any colors and any reasonable fiber type for a scarf, although I'd prefer it was more of a light-to-medium weight scarf. Is there an updated list anywhere? The list pinned on here is from 6 years ago, and the first 4 yarns I searched on that list were not available anymore.

[I'm currently in the midst of my very first pooled project, using a 2025 Caron Anniversary Cake and the granny stitch. It's going well (but slowly) so far, but I'm excited to start a second project like this on a smaller scale, in a scarf.]

Any suggestions?

What yarn should I use? Trying to find an 80s/"arcade carpet" color theme for pooling

There are tons of yarns with those bright 80s colors, but I'm trying to find one that specifically has black in the color rotation. I've been searching around with no luck--has anyone seen anything like that?

What yarn should I use? Has anyone trialled these?

Struggling to find yarn in Australia, these seem to be the only ones that have any potential but I don’t know as the websites don’t show proper photos! Wondering if anyone has tried any of the following?

Lion Brand styles -
Respun, Cover Story, Ferris Wheel, Dreamland, Landscapes, Landscapes Renewed, or Baby Soft yarns

Or the Caron Cotton Cakes

Or 4 Seasons Printed or Spotsavers

Or Bella Baby Tadpole

Question Should I attempt the 131 stitches ?

Thumbnail

My usual attempts with this gifted yarn end up as picture one, so I posted on reddit asking what could I make with it and some people suggested pooling

So I did a bit of looking into found the website and found that 88 stitches (2nd pic) looked pretty neat compared to the usual attempts

I realised the larger the stitch amount the neater the pooling so I increased and increased til I stumbled across 131 stitches (3rd pic)

Should I attempt this? I’ve never pooled before and I do crochet more than knit but this yarn because of how quick the colour changes does not look great crocheted at all so I recently learned to knit

Would love to hear some thoughts !

Is it really possible? Thoughts?

It looks like it might be a long color change. I didn't have the time to snag it and gauge it but if your pros think it would work up well I might go back and get it.

I was told to repost this here. My daughter picked out the yarn. I didn’t know how it was going to look. I showed it to her in single crochet and double crochet. She liked the single crochet and I must say, I like it as well.

Help! Will Caron Anniversary Cakes (2026) work for planned color pooling projects? I can't figure out if the colors repeat in any sort of predictable way like the 2025 colorways do. Has anyone used these cakes for a color pooling project?

First attempt Any tips?

This was so fun!

I recently salvaged this yarn from a blanket i thrifted. Thought it was the perfect time to work up some samples and try color pooling for the first time.

I really enjoyed working on the samples but still don't really know what project to work on. I'm not really interested in a scarf or blanket. I would be interested in trying to make a wareable out if it though.

Any ideas? Or pattern suggestions?

I won't lie, I'll probably never do it again, but I can say I've done it now lol. (Primary reason is I'm on yarn restriction until I work through my stash and this red heart berry pooling was in the bin so here we are.) Big proud of this finish 🥰

Tips I made a simulator for planning the pooling

I made this app to learn how to build a web app. It is still in beta, so many things to improve.

https://athifm.github.io/planned_pooling/

The work flow is,

  1. Measure each color lengths, and transitions of the yarn

  2. If you know what your stitch gauge is, and how much yarn each stitch consumes, then it's straightforward to visualize.

  3. There is a calibration mode, which you can use to knit test swatches to figure these numbers automatically if you don't (this is the most useful part for me)

4.There are options to add different stitch types and row patterns as well.

Please give me feedback if you get to take a look!

Question Questions about yarn choice

Post image
15 Upvotes

Ok I want to use Herrshner's Halloween sparkle #4 Worsted yarn in the colorway Boo-tiful as i really like the orange mixed with the monohrome... My problem is, the colors are very very long lengths and it takes around 28 granny clusters just to go through one color.... is there another stitch i should use? because the best looking pattern IMO is around 167 total stitches in one row according to the planned pooling website.... and if i double that to account for a space between granny clusters, that's 331 initial stitches....

I guess my questions are, has anyone used this yarn to do planned pooling? is there a better stitch to use? i want to make a blanket but 331 chains to start seems like a ton.... any advice??
