Discussion Penn State pays Research Assistants $14/hour? WTF?

I make $17/hour stocking groceries at a supermarket. How does scientific research pay less than retail? Seriously, Penn State?

Question Prospective Software Engineering Student

Hey guys, I am looking to go back to school for the Software Engineering program through World Campus. I need to sign up by the end of the month. I am currently a professional in a different field of engineering but am looking for a change to my career path and I was thinking one class per semester until I'm done the program. Does anybody have any experience with Software Engineering through World Campus (or even with PSU in general) and have any feedback, advice, or warnings?

Discussion Travel to NY

Hey,
I want to travel to NY on Thursday evening.
I was checking the bus, but I'm not that sure about Greyhound's safety.

Is there any other way, or has any of you used Greyhound on this route?

Discussion VPN Issues?

I’m a first-year student at my state university, and I use Surfshark on my EDUroam network. I’ve been experiencing connectivity issues with EDUroam, where I feel like I’m connected, but my phone, Mac, iPad, and other devices that are all connected to Surfshark are not getting a connection. Can anyone help me fix this or improve the situation?

Question Mechanical Engineering Scheduling Advice Needed! (First Semester Freshman)

Post image
0 Upvotes

Hey everyone! I'm a freshman mechanical engineering student at Penn State, and I wanted to get some feedback on my planned eight-semester schedule.

I had to drop a few classes during my first semester due to personal circumstances, which is why my Fall 2026 schedule is lighter than usual.

I also came in with a good amount of AP credit, so if certain classes aren't listed, it's because I already received credit for them. I've included my AP scores at the bottom for reference.

How does this schedule look overall? Are there any semesters that seem particularly difficult or any classes you'd recommend moving around? I'm especially interested in whether the workload is balanced and if there are any prerequisite issues I might have overlooked.

Any advice from current ME students or graduates would be appreciated!

Question Is this too much or a balanced schedule for spring? I heard Music 4 and Kines82/84 are relatively easy for the GenEd's I need. Idk if cmpsc101, ist220, and math22 will be a lot tho on top of it. For reference I'm in WMNST106, GD 115, Math21, and IST210 and it's not too much.

Request Cat sitter for 1 year.

I've received the unfortunate news that uncle sam has requested a mandatory trip to the middle east down range for some army folks. I don't have any family in the same time zone and would prefer to keep my cats (2) in the same area. It will be compensated well.

Request Looking for penn staters for gaming club

Hey everyone! I’m looking to build up a group of regular gaming friends who want to hang out and play together consistently.

We hold events every 2 times a week but we play occasionally and hop on whenever. We have a good number of people who play with us but are looking for me to add. We want to provide a fun experience to everyone and hopefully play for at least a couple of hours. We provide weekly updates with what's going on.

I'm usually playing free multiplatform hits like Overwatch, Minecraft, Rocket League, marvel rivals, Jackbox and Rainbow Six Siege I'm part of an 18+ and fully inclusive crowd, and whether you're competitive or just looking for casual laughs, I'd love to have you join me.

Shoot me a DM or drop a comment if you want to team up!

Discussion Smart phones

Anyone else feel like smart phones kind of ruined the college experience?

No encounter or group feels authentic. People go out to take pictures, not have fun. There's no more doing dumb stuff for the fun of it because there's more consequences, it's like having fun has to feel corporate and curated.

I’m a freshman trying to get an apartment with some friends I made for sophomore year. Is it worth it to get an apartment already and if so, where are good places to live that are close to Penn state and not extremely expensive?

Request Lost my passport on a bus last weekend - white Coach bag, you can keep the bag idc

Hi everyone,

Last Sunday I left a white Coach bag on the NV bus around noon, and my passport and wallet were inside. If anyone found it, I’d really appreciate hearing from you.

Honestly, you can keep the bag. All I’m after is my passport. If you’d rather not send the wallet back, that’s fine too. The passport is the one thing I can’t easily replace.

My address is on the state ID in the wallet, so you’re welcome to drop everything off at the clubhouse there. You can also leave it at any of the commons on campus. Or just DM me and I’ll happily cover postage or meet you somewhere public.

Thank you so much for reading this.

Question Alternatives to Kokoro?

Seems they've shut down, anyone know why? Seems like a lot of places downtown have closed their doors.

Anyway does anyone know any other places that do a spicy brisket ramen? Google wasn't much help so I don't have much hope

Question PA State Grant/Pell Grant

Has anyone received their PA State Grant/Pell Grant refunds, yet?

I understand that the state has put a pause on releasing these funds. My fiance at a different Pennsylvania college has already received his state refunds a while back.

I’ve reached out to financial aid multiple times, and they seem to be as in-the-dark as me and have no information on when the funds will be sent.

I’ve also reached out to my State Representatives, with the same result. Nobody seems to know.

It’s getting frustrating because the semester is half over and I rely on these funds for my living expenses. I’ve had to take on a second job just to pay for it all which is interfering with my studies.

Anyone have any more info than what I’ve been able to get?

Thanks!

Discussion penn state world campus - making connections

hi everyone, i’m enrolled in psu WC, this is my first semester and things are going well.. so far at least lol. i’m a sophomore finance major and im located in atlanta. i know for finance in general networking and having connections matter. i’m wondering if anyone has suggestions on creating a network and utilizing the universities resources as much as i can or having any tips how to do so in general.

i joined the clubs on the discover and i try to go to as many meetings as i can if im not not working and that includes those career services too and ask alumni’s lol. i see the finance/becon group on canvas so i keep track of that. i’ve also applied to a bunch of internships in my area and out of state for 2027. linkedin too, well i don’t have too much on my linkedin. but i’m wondering should i try to join my local city groups, maybe try going to nearest university and make friends with people there and see whats going on, make try to make a trip to PA and join one of those overnight trips and seminars lol. my goal after college is obviously to get a stable paying job, location isn’t super important but i’m hoping for either west coast, east coast or georgia or texas. ive been trying to do research on reddit and just reading people’s experiences but it is a little bit limited since a lot of the posts are from in person students, outdated or depressing. i appreciate all advice and tips and/or stories!

while on the topic has any world campus students from out of state ever went to go visit campus? i’ll like to visit one day to tour one of the campuses and make a quick trip up there :)

edit: also not sure if it matters but i’m not quite sure what part of finance i’m leaning towards to right now i’m thinking wealth management, i did want to do commercial real estate.

Request December or Spring Semester (2027) Sublet in College Heights Neighborhood

Our roommate is moving out because he got a better job so we are looking for someone to take over his room starting in December or January until July 31 with possibility to renew (no preference on gender, preferably another grad student or professional, mature undergrads will be considered). Rent is $617/ month + electric and WiFi. You'd be sharing a 3 bedroom 1.5 bathroom duplex with two other people (27M, 24F, both grad students) but you will have a private room. Amenities include in-unit washer and dryer, dishwasher, AC and heat, and one free parking spot. There is a bus stop nearby and it is close enough to walk to campus.

Please note: we have two cats and while we clean litter boxes regularly, they will be in the common areas along with food bowl and water. I don't think we will be allowed to add any more pets to the lease.

DM me if you're interested!
