Job market question

• Upvotes

Hello I’m strongly considering moving to Columbus, I’m from San Diego and the job market and expenses suck, also I vibe better with the lifestyle there. I’m a home body and love space and seasons. Just need my wife and dogs and I’ll be happy camper. Mind you my sister lives there and I have been there several times. Just never looked into the job market.

I have a masters in physics, have done research into material science and have years of experience as an engineer in industry in San Diego. I’m interested in engineering jobs industry and teaching community college.

Any thought and advice would be awesome.

REQUEST Wheelchair Transit around town….

• Upvotes

Thrown in the deep end of the pool, so to speak.

I’m 63, wheelchair user, living in The Hilltop adjacent to Valleyview.
I stopped driving a couple years ago , but had been pretty much isolated from everything that wasn’t a medical appointment since a serious injury right at the start of Covid
My next door neighbor/friend has been my driver/light assistant since then
He had a stroke on the 13th and has been at OSU main since (transferring to the VA rehab in Chillicothe tomorrow am)
He was unable to speak and wrote that he wanted me to advocate/speak for him at the hospital.

Long story short. I had to figure out how to get myself i in my wheelchair to OSU via COTA on Wednesday and Sunday, only to find the side streets through most of the hilltop were very difficult to pass on a wheelchair so a lot of the time I had to wheel myself over the brick streets, plus with the cluster fuck that was traffic on Sunday due to races and concerts and shit, after 2 1/2 hours on the bus (#8) we had u-turn at Wario’s disembark in the arena district and I had to roll myself down Neil to the medical campus (I I think I reversed my past three months of rotator cuff therapy in that 2 1/2 miles…)

While figuring out two bus trips there and back on the fly after years of isolation was a definite confidence booster and morale builder, fuck me if it wasn’t hell on my arms

Fortunately, and my doctor suggested months ago to start the paperwork and just today got issued my COTA Mainstream card and that’s going to solve a lot of issues with things that I can schedule ahead of time.

But what about on demand travel that isn’t gonna bleed me dry… I’m already getting by on free pantry food and the cost that I was quoted for an on-demand wheelchair company traveling from my home to OSU and then back was gonna be close to $150 round-trip.

And I’m also looking for suggestions on how to affordably visit my friend in rehab down in Chillicothe.

Also, what transit app(s) should I be using on an iOS device?
if I know my routes and I don’t need to pay, does the Transit app make any sense?

And anything else I should consider?
Driver rehab/hand controls are not doable until probably next summer

REQUEST Nail salon suggestions?

• Upvotes

I’m in a wedding in about a month and would like to get my nails done prior. But! I would love to support a small business type nail salon that won’t cost me an arm and a leg, and will actually listen to what I ask for 🥲 last time I got mine done, it cost me 85ish plus tip and I ended up going home and fixing it (before anyone says “why didn’t you say something” I did, multiple times, and gave up trying to get it to what I want cause I wasn’t being listened to) and I don’t wanna do that again.

So if anyone knows of a good small business nail salon that won’t break my bank please lmk! Thanks :)

Man followed two mothers with children at Lewis Center Walmart, be careful.

Full story below. I’ve replaced my baby’s name with ‘Baby’. I’m sharing this because it was one of the scariest things I’ve ever experienced. I’m happy to coordinate with others who may have similar experiences at this location.

So here’s what happened (including the info from the other mom)

I parked Baby in the cart along a produce stand and turned my back to her to grab carrots and celery out of the main refrigerator. The guy walked in between me and Baby, which alerted my spidey senses because I don’t like people standing between me and my unattended baby. So I took note of what he looked like, pulled Baby over to me and kept shopping.

As I rounded one of the center bins to find onions, he walked past me from the opposite side and made eye contact with me. This triggered my senses again, because he would have had to circle around me in a weird way to face each other.

I walked past the main produce area and picked up a rotisserie chicken along the deli wall. He came up from behind me, passed, and acted like he was shopping along the pre-prepared food fridge. He was pushing a mini cart that had only a couple random items in it.

At this point, I decided I would walk multiple aisles away, and if he followed me then I knew he was stalking me. I left the produce area, walked past three aisles of frozen food, the bread aisle, and went to the soup aisle to get chicken stock.

After putting the stock in the cart, I looked up and sure enough he was coming down the opposite end of the aisle. We walked past each other, and as I reached the end of the aisle I looked back and he had stopped and was staring back at me.

I rounded the corner to the main walkway and then bolted through the clothing racks in the center until I could park Baby along a center clothes wall. I hid behind the wall and watched the soup aisle through some endcap shelves.

Sure enough, he backtracked through the soup aisle looked both ways down the main aisle before heading the way I had turned to get out of sight before hiding in center clothing. I stalked him as he looked for me in each checkout lane.

I waited for him to round a corner near Home & Gardens to checkout my stuff.

While I was checking out (which took about 8 minutes), he had abandoned his cart in the Garden Center and went to the parking lot (maybe to find me or head me off). He approached the other mom who was putting her kid in the car seat, but heard her husband talking through the truck and wandered off to the next car aisle.

He saw me exit the store (walking down the same aisle as the mom he had approached) and walked back to the store front and turned around to follow me down that aisle.

I didn’t know he was outside when I exited the store. I looked for him while walking to my car but never saw him. The first thing I did was open the side of the car and put Baby’s car seat in the base. When I looked towards the front of the building through the window, he was coming towards me about 6-8 cars away.

The spot next to me was empty, but the truck right next to it was on. It had completely black tinted windows, but I knocked on the window fast and kept looking back at the man.

The wife rolled down the window and I said “A man has been following me and my baby, can you guys stay until I leave?”

She immediately turned to her husband and said “I told you!” The husband jumped out of the truck and stood with me. The guy was one car away and when he saw the husband through the window, he made a 90° turn and walked to another car aisle.

I then talked to the couple and she told me how he had just approached her minutes before without realizing her husband was in the truck. He was about 4 feet away before doing a 180 at the husband’s voice and wandering to the other car aisle. I’m assuming that’s why they were still sat there idling their truck while I was coming out of the store.

We agreed to have them follow me halfway home and they would make sure no car was following them.

After they broke off from following me, I broke off 23 and took some backroads to make sure no cars were following me home.

I filed a police report with Delaware PD and saved the receipt so I have a date & time stamp if something happens to another family.

When I got home, Spouse said he was probably looking for vulnerable women to approach/assault for money. Maybe not a child napper necessarily. It was a Monday at 2:00pm after all.

When I had asked if the other mom had a baby too, she said “I was putting my son in his seat” or something, so I’m assuming he was a toddler or young kid. Regardless, super creepy.

I now realize I made two mistakes:

  1. I never should have stepped away from my baby, even just 4 feet away in a store.

  2. I never should have left the store without calling the police or asking an employee to escort me. I’m truly dumbfounded that I didn’t do this. The police said they could be there in 2 minutes when I called after getting home.

Local Nursing Program is making me Suicidal.

Institution left out for anonimity. Not sure what else there is to say. After racking up tens of thousands of dollars in debt, I can't afford to fail. And if you fail, you have to start over. I don't have other options, and I cannot take on more debt.

I feel that i need to get myself commited, but i literally cannot afford to miss seminars or labs and risk failure, otherwise my crisis will go from an 8 to an 11 if i do fail. The pressure from my parents is insane, and i'm struggling to cope with the stress on top of working part time medsurg, which is easy in comparison to school. I even feel like an idiot for making this post because clearly no-one else is saying this on here. I guess im just at a loss.

The school has a contract with third party counseling, but it sucks and doesnt do anything helpful. I guess i'm just looking for help, but i'm convinced there is nothing that can help at this point.

I just need to pull up my big girl pants and keep pushing, i guess.

FOOD What’s up with Steak Escape’s chicken?

Ok, I have gone to Steak Escape since I was a kid. Yes, the food court place with cheesesteaks. Well, they have some brick and mortar places in columbus and when I went a few weeks ago for my beloved Ragin’ Cajun Chicken… the chicken they cooked up seemed to be from a slice of pressed meat (like the steak come from, I assume) and not like how I remember the chicken used to be (from an actual chicken breast or at least chunks of real chicken). I felt like something was different when I saw them cooking it up and even asked “is that my sub” but I haven’t been able to find anything online about it so now I’m just confused.

It did not taste any bit like I remember and really sucks if this is a “new change” because I might finally stop eating there because of this (and I secretly loved that sub, man)

TLDR: Does anyone know if they changed their chicken in the recent years?

Car detailing service

I live in the Upper Arlington area, and a while back noticed what looked like some younger fellas detailing a car in a driveway.

They had a sign for their company, but I regrettably did not take a picture. Does this ring a bell for anyone, and if so can you point me in their direction?

REQUEST What are your suggestions for a relaxing pedicure?

Hello columbus!

I need help finding a place for a relaxing pedicure. I may be doing the nail thing all wrong because whenever I schedule a pedicure/manicure I end up with really nicely done polish with designs and all, but not a very relaxing experience. Does this exist? If so, where are the right places in this town to find that kind of service?

Guitar lessons

Hello all

I am interested in taking some guitar lessons but I am not sure where to go about it.

1-Any suggestions on a studio that I can go to take lessons?
2- I can buy a guitar but I would want to try one class before buying it. Any suggestions on where to find a cheap guitar?
3- do I need to go to the studio every time or do music teachers sometimes come over?

I would appreciate any advice! Thanks!!!

AI commercials rant

All AI commercials fall into one of 3 categories

1: We invest in Columbus... Only no you really don't. You hire people to build data centers and buy products. You barely pay taxes, and you single handedly raise our electric bills by like 50%. So you don't invest in shit. You PAY your bills and that's it. investing in Columbus would include donations, not paying your bills.

  1. Advertisements saying "How much AI helps you."

  2. Advertisements for companies that directly state "We want to replace your workers."

It's actually impressive how AI ads are only persuasive for people with absolutely zero awareness of the world around them.

More over, why are they even advertising? You really need to spend money telling people you aren't the devil?
