I've been kicking around an idea for making Columbus and Central Ohio a little more fun to explore, and I'm curious what people here think.
I recently got interested in Japan's eki stamp culture. At train stations, tourist attractions, and other destinations, you can find unique commemorative stamps designed specifically for that location and collect them in a notebook as you travel around.
It got me thinking: What if we brought something like this to Columbus?
Imagine a Columbus Stamp Trail with unique, locally designed stamps at places like:
Libraries highlighting the neighborhoods and communities they serve.
Metro Parks featuring local wildlife, trails, and natural landmarks.
Historic sites and museums celebrating Columbus history.
Local businesses like coffee shops, breweries, and other destinations.
Neighborhood landmarks and hidden gems that deserve a little more attention.
You'd carry a little passport or notebook, visit different places, and collect a stamp at each stop. It could be a fun way to discover parts of the city you might not normally visit, give families another weekend activity, and encourage people to explore more of Central Ohio.
A few things I want to make clear up front:
This would be completely free. I'm not looking to monetize the idea, charge for passports, or charge locations to participate. The goal is to create something fun for the community.
Existing trails come first. If a location is already part of an established trail, such as the Ale Trail or a coffee trail, its stamp would respect and follow that trail's existing rules. I'd want this to complement those programs, not undermine or replace them.
I'd welcome other artists and creators. I'd love to see local artists contribute stamp designs that represent the places they care about. I'm interested in building something collaborative that reflects the creativity and character of Columbus, not making every design myself.
I'm also wondering whether this could connect some of the existing trails and local discovery programs into a larger experience without taking away what makes each one unique.
A few things I'd love to hear people's thoughts on:
Would you actually participate? Would collecting physical stamps give you a reason to visit somewhere new, or would the novelty wear off pretty quickly?
Where should the stamps go? Libraries, Metro Parks, breweries, coffee shops, historic sites, neighborhood businesses, or somewhere else?
How could this work with existing trails? Could participating locations have their own stamps that also count toward a larger Central Ohio passport? Or would it make more sense to keep each trail separate but compatible?
What could make existing trails better? Better maps, themed routes, family-friendly options, physical passports, or more destinations beyond restaurants and bars?
Physical passport, digital map. I'm imagining the physical stamp being the main attraction, people would buy their own notebook, decorate it, add stickers, to the cover as you explore. Create a simple website to help people find participating locations. Pulling in other trail locations across the city.
What places absolutely deserve a stamp? I'd love suggestions for overlooked neighborhoods, parks, libraries, local landmarks, and hidden gems.
Any local artists interested in contributing? I'd love to hear from people who might want to design a stamp for a favorite neighborhood, park, or local destination.
I'm thinking about starting small with a few prototype stamps and seeing if there's enough interest to approach potential community partners.
This is just an idea at this point, not an established program. No business, no monetization, and no paywall. Just an attempt to create something fun that gets people exploring and appreciating the place we live.
What do you think? Would you collect them? What would you change or add to make this something you'd actually want to participate in?
