Discussion The cinema staff loved my husband’s shirt so much they gave him a gift tonight 😅

While I was in the bathroom post film, one of the staff chuckled at his shirt as he walked by, then he came back and asked if he really was Whalefall’s #1 fan.
He told him “You’re damn right I am” and he asked if he wanted the banner.

For those wondering the front of his shirt says WHALEFALL #1 FAN and the back says WHALEFALL FILM OF THE YEAR 2026. Ya can’t make this shit up.

Question Dune 3 - Cineworld Leicester Square IMAX or Showcase Xplus

I have dune 3 tickets booked for showcase xplus on 15 December and Cineworld Leicester Square on 19 December. I will probably only go to one of them. I understand Cineworld Leicester Square is in imax and has a better aspect ratio of the film. I’ve never been to Leicester Square Cineworld and fear the rows are too close and people’s heads could be in the way. Anyone that has been before have you ever had this issue? I like showcase as the seats are great and there is a wall between you and the row in front. Anyone know which to go for?..

Poster Underrated sci-fi gems part 3

I previously shared the first and second part at this links: https://www.reddit.com/r/Cinema/s/9lBTMwIhLe and https://www.reddit.com/r/Cinema/s/9eTcgWaQPo

Relatively unknown, fantastic sci-fi movies can sometimes be overshadowed by blockbusters. Unfortunately, Hollywood is a massive abyss in this regard. Here’s a great list. Some of these films could be considered cult classics, while others are virtually unknown. This is the part three of the list.

Review Digger is highlighting a collective need for a new operating system

The plot twists in Digger is quite staggering (*spoiler alert*). And if these twists and turns finds a fertile ground there is the potential to harvest a golden fruit from this masterpiece of a movie:

To stagger.

Yesss ... I'm talking about putting on those fancy boots that makes you walk like an egyptian on mushrooms. And open the door to where entertainment meets the dead serious ... as in utterly cryonic frozen and holy f*** the very floor we are standing on is quite literally melting !?! And have been melting for quite some time. And the part of us peeking out from the frosty circular window on board the ship already knew this. Knew since the first little baby cover stories took their first stumbling steps into the arena of planetary history.

This is now a deliberate attempt to loose you: The pathological part of you (and me) that are constantly stretching out the arms to find something to cling to. Anything. The story of how a tuna was raised is taken as truth, and swallowed hook, line and sinker. And a part of us savours this. Find a little bit of breathing room, before we are again swimming in open sea with sheer panic just beneath the surface - looking for a saviour. Who would dive in that situation?

Digger would dive. Digger is who dove.

And our reaction? We throw all of our repressed hatred onto him , momentarily relieved that the scum of the earth is now externalized.

To continue succesfully, basically

SURVIVE,

we need to establish a firm boundary to that part of us who have mistaken the map for the territory, who mistook perception for reality. This is not done by moving along the habitual pathways for how a movie, a text or for that matter anything unfolds.

This is what an LLM excels in, and for an LLM words are perception. And perception is reality.

Going off piste like this is challenging. It demands something from us: Instead of just leaning back and eating what is served from the neural pathways of least resistance, we must lean into and connect to the part of us capable of facing the situation.

A great movie ceases you and lifts you into a realm of imagination. An even greater movie ceases you in a way that allow you to witness that this is what is happening. Why is the latter superior to the first? Because entertainment is not what we need. It might be what we crave, but it is not what we need.

We need to train our capabilities to go off piste. And then maybe retracting to familiar territory. But eventually we need to go off piste and stay there, because .... psst ...

the boat is sinking.

And have been for some time.

The convoluted paths of this movie is NOT an attempt to loose you (the sober part of you), its just that the part of us who have bought into the idea that parts of our reality can be weaponized, did not even notice the subtle shift from hydrogen bombs to perception management that happened ages ago.

Mammals were successfully revived after being frozen back in the 60's, so for those invested hook, line and sinker in the lifeboat, cryonics have for a long time been the option if you had a desire to prolong life or avoid death. This long lost sheep is beginning to wake up and initially it does not like the view. At all. Which poses quite a challenge for anyone reaching down to reach this part of us right on the nose. It takes a big swing, balls and brains.

And Digger have it all.

Discussion You Can See Everything - A drop in the bucket of discussion points about Billy Evans

I wanted to check in on people's thoughts towards one of my most favorite recurring moments in You Can See Everything, regarding Billy Evans and his faux-capitalist nepo baby persona.

I see a lot of people clowning on the guy for being this perfect representation of Silicon Valley soullessness that only speaks in corporate tongues and platitudes, and while I agree with that characterization, and I don't think this behavior is an indictment in and of itself, the way he was repeatedly shown 'watching' chemistry videos in hyper speed was HILARIOUS to me and displays a prominent Dunning Kruger like effect happening in real life.

As far as I know, he went to MIT for Economics and is now a sort of entrepreneur, which is all fine and maybe even impressive, but I would guess that he did not receive an equal education in a hard science like chemistry from MIT. To be fair, the doc did not go into why he was watching the videos, but it was definitely framed as self-education, given that he is pursuing a Theranos 2.0 kind of idea with the now-imprisoned Liz Holmes and a team of (actual) researchers.

But does anyone else get the feeling that that was all performative? How could anyone learn anything concrete or foundational in something as difficult as, say, molecular biology, to a point of being able to prototype a new Edison machine with cutting edge laser technology, from just watching youtube videos at 5x speed? Even as just an investor or business consultant, who are you trying to fool? The language he was actually using on calls and when talking about the product was all MBA jargon with a lot of 'circling back', 'maximizing throughput', and 'untangling communication channels', etc.

And yes, while I am a cynical nerdy guy who is repelled by those levels of greed and wealth-attachment at some base level of my being, I can't shake my personal belief that real domain knowledge like that, the kind that you need to actually know what you are talking about and truly revolutionize a field or technology within that field, at least partially comes from the dirt and mud? Like you have to fall in love with it almost, usually as a child or young adult, when there's no chance for greed to touch it, to actually get anywhere serious with it. And furthermore, are people that don't get to experience a relationship with knowledge like that, or find it boring or pointless, more susceptible to becoming professional 'deceivers' as adults? In the sense that when you get to be 25 for example, and have no skills to show for it, but you are desperate to seem as if you do, maybe it's easier to learn how to fake it rather than actually put in the work to become an expert? And what does that say about the people who fall for it? This is not to paint myself into a binary view of the world where people are simply experts or lying-experts, when in reality most people are neither and are just content surviving comfortably, but I do want to shine a ton of light on the latter of the two groups, especially the ones with seemingly unlimited resources, as very much dangerous in the way they pursue their own, most-likely-aggrandized, success.

I understand I'm finishing on a mainstream point now, and I think there's plenty of spotlights put on these types of people right now (albeit with little to no consequences in mind), but I just loved how that little detail in the film brought so much of this cultural moment into the front of my mind while watching. I'll be curious if anyone felt the same way or find that I am totally misreading these moments and should delete this post imminently.

We were there opening night and I’ll tell you that everyone in the audience was so into it and we were all cheering. One of the greatest sports movies of all time… great cast, great acting and great soundtrack…
