Mod Update Rule Changes (Reminder) (No new updates)
Updates:
- I added a read-before-write protocol. If you do not read these, you will most likely be banned within a few posts.
- Created formatting guide for each flair type that must be adhered to or your post will be removed - Formatting Guide
- Pirated materials are subject to a zero-tolerance policy, as is customary. I've let some YouTube stuff slide by simply removing the comments, but there have been enough of them to make it unacceptable, and pirated streaming sites have always resulted in an instant ban. This is being updated now for clarity, and because the rules have been in place long enough that there is no reason for anyone not to have gone through them after the updates, which I took over months ago. Posting links to pirated materials will result in instant bans going forward.
- All posts must have body text, with the only exception being a photo gallery of examples of the cinematography you're looking for or a custom list of movies that are similar to what you are looking to watch next and for which you are making a request for suggestions. (This has always been a rule, but I'm including it here for added visibility.)
- We also added a suggestion to upvote posts with which you interact in the comments section. It takes less time than your previous comment, which is the main point of this sub, and it allows it to reach a larger audience. This is not intended to encourage intentional karma farming, which will still be enforced if movie requests are not submitted honestly or in poor quality. If you disagree with a review or a suggestion, there is no reason to vote for it.
- Comments are limited to 50 unless you interact with the comment section, in which case you can contact the mod team and request that the post be unlocked.
Low-quality posts and comments:
We recently updated rule 3 (low-quality posts) to make it clearer. This is now one of the five Participation Guidelines listed in the subreddit's main page rules. (Now rules 4–9)
Reasons:
These were updated because a large number of copyrighted materials are being shared on YouTube and other sites, and the sub was starting to resemble a photo gallery rather than something people were actually interacting with, let alone putting any effort into their suggestions and requests.

That said, the more effort you put in, like some of these folks, the more interaction you'll typically get, and the faster you can get back to watching movies.
(Keep in mind that some of these are examples from before flairs and the formatting guide were added but still serve as a good basis as to what we are looking for.)

I am suggesting... Halloween Favorites
It's that time of year, so, I'm looking for some others favorite Halloween flicks (and including some of my own). I'm not necessarily talking about your favorite horror movies of all time. More so movies that you like to watch during the Halloween season. Fun, spooky, terrifying, whatever your go-to flicks are. The more random the better because I'd love to discover some gems I haven't seen yet.
My suggestions (again, not my all time favorite horrors):
Drag Me to Hell (2009)
House of the Devil (2009)
Evil Dead II (1987)
Mad God (2021)
Wes Craven's New Nightmare (1994)
And for random sake, I'll throw in Darling (2015) and A Dark Song (2016),
Shoot!

Help me find Movies/TV shows Looking for spooky, family-friendly movies/TV Shows for Halloween
Hi! I'm in dire need of some spooky, but fun movies or a TV show to watch this next weeks in anticipation for Halloween. I'm looking for family-friendly films that are spooky and creepy but also whimsical and fun, preferably with a distinct Halloween/autumnal theme or vibe. Please don't recommend me Horror films. I like Horror, but not for Halloween.
Here's a list of most of what I've seen in the previous years:
ParaNorman (one of my absolute faves, I watch it every year on Halloween evening)
Hocus Pocus 1&2
Goosebumps 1&2
Casper 1&2
Halloweentown 1&2
E.T.
Don't be Afraid of the Dark
The House with a Clock in it's Walls
The Addams family films, including that awful 2019 animation
Hotel Transylvania 1,2&3
Everything by Tim Burton (Corpse Bride, Frankenweenie, Edwards Scissorhands, Beetlejuice 1&2, Sleepy Hollow, Wednesday, etc.)
Coraline
Monster House
The Haunted Mansion (both the 2003 original and 2023 remake)
Plenty of Disney Channel originals like Twitches, Girl vs. Monster and Don't Look Under the Bed

Help me find Movies/TV shows Movies similar to “Ready or Not” and “Ready or Not 2?”
I absolutely loved both movies. What made them so enjoyable for me was both the plot (a woman having to survive while a bunch of crazy idiots try to kill her) and the horror atmosphere, with tense scenes mixed with comedy. Some scenes were genuinely hilarious, which made the movies feel lighter and even more entertaining.
I looked up some similar movies on Google, and it recommended The Hunt, which I thought was ridiculous. I really didn’t like it, and I honestly don’t think it has anything in common with Ready or Not, even though the premise seemed right.

Mod Update Self-Promo Requests (Update)
What's up, folks? Hope all is well.
Quick update that affects very few of you.
In the past the sub used to allow people who created apps and websites to help find movies and track what they've watched to post and promote their apps here.
Unfortunately this has turned into a cascade of requests for (mostly) mediocre websites and apps that really detract from the point of this sub. Which is to engage with humans, to get recommendations from people in a world where digital algorithms get so much wrong.
The truth is, I've been turning them away for a while now, at least anyone who messages in.
So time to make it official!
If you make your own movie-finding app, content tracker, or anything similar...
I'm sorry. You'll have to look elsewhere to promote your app/site. We seriously get way too many requests for these, and there are so many already available. Adding to the pile of options isn't necessarily adding value.
I'll be updating the self-promo rule here shortly.
Anyway, thanks for checking in, folks!
Your chaotic lurker mod
- Rye

Help me find Movies/TV shows Movie recommendations
Never was big on movies, or really TV in general, but I've been watching a lot recently. Loved the dark knight trilogy, I love star wars especially the prequel trilogy. Rick and Morty is fantastic, and transformers is great. What are some other movies/shows that are really good, clearly I do like action but it doesn't need to be exclusively action.

Help me find Movies/TV shows Looking for something about people living inside systems that they don’t understand/are a lie
Preferably with a dark twist
For example:
-The island, great twist
-The silo, insane twist
-Severance
-I liked elysium until it became too actiony
-Black mirror “15 million merits” (I wish they did a whole season on this concept)
-The platform 1 & 2. Really liked these movies, except for the endings
-The incident (sort of fits here)
I also liked fallout for the same reason, but I wasn’t as hooked as I was on the rest.
I haven’t even attempted to watch the Truman show because I want something darker and unsettling
Any suggestions? Thanks

I am suggesting... Another great dreamworks movie.
The theme of memory in this movie really hit me hard at the end. Won't spoil the details obviously, but if you have the time? Go watch this in your local cinema.
Its another crazy fun dreamworks movie with a hardhitting emotional core and (from what i've seen a lot of philipino say) a pretty good cultural aspect to it. By the end i was tearing up and trying my hardest to go back to my own past happy memories that made me who i am. It has its issues and the start can be a bit of a whirlwind of scenes, but the middle really gets you going and the ending hits most of the good points. At worst i wish it had an extra few minutes here and there to slow things down a bit.
Sad that the marketing of this movie really got fucked over by universal and even outright lied in the movie so it's not nearly as known as it should be.

Help me find Movies/TV shows Medieval core for the girlies
Something light and slow paced ideally but it doesn't have to be limited to that. I'm just in a very "slowed golden brown" by The Stranglers state of mind lately.

Help me find Movies/TV shows Movies I can watch while other people are near my (i.e. movies without any sexual stuff)
I mostly watch in my living room so what are some movies I can watch while theyre present. Gore and bad language is fine, it’s only nudity and sexual stuff I’m worried about.
Thanks

Help me find Movies/TV shows looking for films like Donnie Darko where you wonder whether what's happening is real
I'm looking for movies where you end up wondering whether the film is representing a surreal / fantastical situation, or if the character is just crazy. Donnie Darko is easily the best explanation for what I'm looking for. Fight Club could fit into what I'm talking about, if only it didn't end essentially telling you that the character is just crazy.

I am suggesting... New & Recommended: "La Bola Negra" — A Watershed Moment for Queer Cinema and a Sweeping, Emotional Historical Epic
I fully admit I went into La Bola Negra expecting to admire the film more than be moved by it. It seemed designed to be a movie that felt "good for you." Nothing could be further from the truth — this is a bold, ambitious, audacious film that takes creative risks with a complex structure. But every risk pays off in a movie as accomplished as it is genuinely, impossibly moving. Absolutely exquisite and recommend MOST highly.
My rating: ***** of *****
My full review is after the poster image.

La Bola Negra is something truly rare: a milestone film, a watershed moment for queer filmmaking, a grand and sweeping historical epic that places homosexuality at its center and makes no apology. It is an essential film for queer audiences. Whether it has crossover or mainstream appeal is irrelevant: it is a movie made by and for the LGBTQ+ community.
It's also a challenging piece of historical drama that is entirely comprehensible without knowing the specifics of the Spanish Civil War or the life of poet and playwright Federico García Lorca, but that invites curiosity and then deepens exponentially because of that knowledge.
All that may sound daunting, and I went into La Bola Negra assuming it might be a movie that I could admire more than love, that would be important without being genuinely moving. I was wrong on all counts. It's a remarkable story that is accessible and legible without any advance preparation. It is a movie that no queer person and nobody who cares deeply about film will want to miss.
It's so beautifully crafted and so visually impressive that even though it will appear on Netflix in December, it's well worth the effort to see it in a movie theater during its initial run. Directed by Javier Ambrossi and Javier Calvo, who share screenwriting credit with Alberto Conejero, La Bola Negra is complex, intelligent and profoundly moving.
Anyone who thought Digger was too "meta" may go apoplectic when they try to make sense of La Bola Negra, in which Lorca himself is a character and also the inspiration for the film's story, which is in part based on an unfinished (only four pages long) play he was writing at the time of his murder by Spanish Nationalists. Lorca's partner, Rafael Rodríguez Rapún is a major character in one of three interwoven narratives that make up the film.
In one, Rapún is a Spanish Republic soldier taken prisoner during the Spanish Civil War and watched over by Nationalist soldier Sebastián, who has no strong loyalty to the Spanish government. He became a solider after his village was destroyed by Italian forces, and finds himself strongly attracted to Rapún, who he does not know is gay. Their relationship deepens, but is threatened by the realities of war.
Even as Sebastián hides the secret of his sexual orientation, Rapún himself hides an even deeper secret — the play that Lorca was working on, and that Rapún has vowed to protect at all costs.
That play, La Bola Negra, or "the black ball," becomes a second storyline in the film, telling of a young man before the Civil War who must hide his own identity in order to gain admission to an elite society. His self-doubt grows when a man he may love, Enrique, tries to persuade him to renounce society and join the dissidents.
The third story takes place in the present, as a frustrated Madrid playwright named Alberto discovers he has come into an inheritance — one his embittered mother doesn't want him to accept. When he finds out what the inheritance is, the entire shape of this bold and ambitious film comes clear.
A huge cast, which includes Penélope Cruz and Glenn Close (largely speaking Spanish), is uniformly brilliant, especially Spanish musician Guitarricadelafuente and impossibly handsome Miguel Bernardeau as the ill-fated lovers caught in the war; and the seemingly more straightforward but ultimately intensely complex role of Alberto, the present day writer-researcher, that becomes quietly devastating in the hands of Carlos González.
La Bola Negra is about the legacy that persists on far beyond our human lifespan. It challenges the conventional wisdom that because we often don't have children or large families, and historically haven't lived openly, gay men are destined to leave less of a mark on the world. It recognizes and understands the fundamental pains of living life secretly, while also confronting broader generational trauma — not just of gay men but of everyone who lives through private and public wars — with dignity, grace and beauty.
Its story structure is massive in both scope and execution, but La Bola Negra reaches a simple and moving conclusion: We all matter. Every single one of us. No one's pain is less than any other, but some of that pain reaches through the decades to shape who we become. This is an astonishing, audacious film, certainly one of the very, very best in a remarkably strong year.

Help me find Movies/TV shows Any niche favourites in these categories I can add to my movie collection?
Hi! Sorry I didn’t really know how to title this I’m mainly looking for movies like these:
- Cheesy horror from/around the 1980s
- Body horror
- So bad they’re good movies
- Feature length documentaries not about violent crimes/tragic events
- Anything from the 1950s and older
Assuming I’ve seen the most popular suggestions in these realms, are there any I might have overlooked?

Help me find Movies/TV shows Wife is out of town movie recommendations on Netflix
I actually adore how my wife is very sensitive and can’t watch movies that are disturbing (for example she could not watch Killers of the Flower Moon because it made her too sad watching people be so cruel), or if they are very violent and/or gory. (I just watched Cocaine Bear last night, which I was saving for this purpose - it was entertaining but I wasn’t crazy about it).
So I’m looking for recommendations for movies on Netflix that I normally couldn’t watch with her. A movie like Titane would be a really good example. I like indie/arthouse. Some of my favorite movies from the past decade are:
I Saw the TV Glow
Triangle of Sadness
The Florida Project
Babyteeth
Banshees of Inisherin
Aftersun
Kajillionaire
Bugonia (but not crazy about Lanthimos’ other films)
I’m in the U.S.
Thank you!
