I remember watching the Amityville Horror when I was a young teenager and I don’t think anything petrified me more than watching that movie. Once was enough for me! The Exorcist was another one that gave me palpitations.

If someone handed me “the keys” to a Hollywood production, I would write and produce an animated version of this Paul Auster novel about a dog named Mr. Bones.

If you suddenly got the green light for any film project, what would you make?

Discussion Whalefall. Hit or miss?

I've just watched Whalefall, and was looking forward to it after reading the book.

Has anyone else read the book also? I'd be interested in your comparisons. Imo the book portrays the story better.

If you haven't read the book, your views would be appreciated too.

I think this might be a very ' Marmite' movie, as in you'll either love it or hate it.

Question Who is your favorite redeemed antihero?

The redeemed antihero archetype has always been one of my favorites. There's just something I love about a character who starts out as the "bad guy" but ends up having the most heroic moment in the entire movie. Some examples that come to mind are C.J. (Dawn of the Dead), Nux (Mad Max), Yondu (Guardians of the Galaxy), and my personal favorite, Roy Batty from Blade Runner.

Who's your favorite? I'm also hoping to discover more movies featuring this type of character that I haven't seen yet.

Discussion Would you call Roy from Blade Runner a redeemed antihero?

Post image
24 Upvotes

Before i start, i know someone will tell me "This is the point of the movie" but judging from a popular post i recently saw, and the fact that many people like Ridley Scott's origami unicorn ending, there is room for this discussion.

I saw a post that called Roy Batty from Blade Runner a redeemed antihero. But i wouldn't say he needed to be redeemed or call him an antihero: He's an antagonist who didn't want to die like a slave and tried to find a way to live like a normal human. Watching it as a teenager, i initially thought all the replicants are bad, until Roy's final monologue where he explains their motivations. But watching it again as an adult, i understood and empathized with them way before that. They're basically human (in a way more human than Deckard) and are treated as disposable tools, so rebelling against the system is understandable.

Considering all this, did he even need to be redeemed? Him saving Deckard definitely goes a long way towards redeeming him in the viewer's eyes, but i 'd argue it wouldn't even be necessary if people didn't have a tendency to automatically take the side of the protagonist. You could easily make a movie from the replicants' point of view and they'd come across as really sympathetic.

New Release Street Fighter 2026: Non-Spoiler Review

Post image

There was something about the trailers for Street Fighter 2026 that got me excited for the film. It seemed pretty irreverent and leaned into the video game vibe that set it apart from the more serious take of the recent Mortal Kombat films. It had a tone that made me want to watch it.

Now, the previous Street Fighter films have been pretty up and down in terms of quality. The 1994 film has something of a cult following (probably more for its "so bad it's good" vibe), with quotable lines and Raul Julia delivering a standout performance. Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li, on the other hand, was pretty forgettable and failed to deliver on any of its promise. So I thought, maybe this time we were finally going to get an adaptation that would elevate Street Fighter in the cinematic realm.

Alas, it was not meant to be. I mean, I'll be honest, I really wanted to like this film, but I came away feeling pretty disappointed.

First, let me talk about the film's good parts. There are animated sequences in the film that pop up here and there that are really well done. So good, in fact, that I found myself wishing the whole film had been done in that style.

However, things that work in animation don't always translate well into live action, and the rest of the movie feels a bit disjointed, with the tone jumping around from outright campiness to complete seriousness.

When the movie works, it's when it fully embraces its video gamey roots. It doesn't bother explaining why people are capable of phenomenal feats. Instead, it just revels in the absurdity of it all and uses it to create spectacle after spectacle.

Where the film falters is in the overwhelming sense of melodrama that pervades a good bulk of its characters, melodrama that feels neither earned nor necessary. This is especially evident with Ryu, whose portrayal by Andrew Koji feels like it belongs in a completely different movie. Don't get me wrong, I actually like Koji's Ryu, but his performance has a totally different serious tone from the rest of the cast, who seem to be having a great time hamming it up.

I also felt like a lot of the characters were underutilised, and I got the distinct impression that quite a few of their scenes had been left on the cutting room floor. Which is a shame, because there were several characters who got a big build-up that ultimately amounted to nothing.

Speaking of which, Jason Momoa as Blanka has to be one of the biggest examples of stunt casting I've seen in a while. Given the CG nature of the role and his story arc, pretty much anyone could have played the role. It felt like a bit of a waste, and yet another character saddled with drama that really didn't need to be.

My last nitpick is that I felt the audio for the dialogue was poorly mastered. There were quite a few moments where I genuinely struggled to make out what was being said. Not that it mattered all that much, as the story is really just an excuse to string a bunch of fights together. There are plenty of plot holes and nonsensical story beats, but I'm pretty sure Street Fighter fans aren't going to see this movie for its story.

The fights themselves were adequate. I do think the editing diminished the impact of some of them, and quite a few seemed to finish just as they were getting going. I guess that's the downside of having such a big ensemble cast and a limited amount of screen time to give everyone their moment.

As things go, this movie certainly has more production value than its 1994 counterpart and is definitely better than The Legend of Chun-Li. Whether you enjoy it or not will probably come down to how big a Street Fighter fan you are and how much you're willing to overlook its shortcomings. Personally, I'd just wait to watch this one at home.

If you do decide to catch it in cinemas, there is a mid-credits scene, and that's it. Don't bother waiting till the end :)

Discussion I don’t think re-releases should count towards a movies box office numbers…

Avatar was the grossing movie of all time until Avengers Endgame came out, but then Avatar reclaimed the title once it got re-released in China, but then Avengers Endgame reclaimed it after Avengers Endgame Encore got released this year.

But in all honesty, I don’t think re-releases should count, I think a movie's original theatrical release (as it was intended to be seen) should be the only version that counts towards the total box office numbers.

Re-releasing a movie until it finally makes more money than another movie sounds like cheating to me.

At what point does it stop? I’ve seen movies that bombed at the box office get released in theaters like Blade Runner, The Thing (1982), The Iron Giant, are those movies no longer flops if people watched the re-releases in theaters?

Question What color should I use for the word “cinema”?

Post image
0 Upvotes

I made this canvas over the past couple days. Each image represents some of my favorite movies. I realized after making it that I should change the color of the word “cinema” in order to create contrast because currently it all blends together too much with it all being white. Problem is I can’t decide on a color and I’m worried because once I do it there’s no going back.

Also I know I butchered my boy rob pat in “the drama” image lol
