From Matt Eliott of Georgia DNR
Far be it from me to tell you how to vote, but I thought it might be worthwhile to provide some information on ballot measure 1 on this year's Georgia statewide ballot. The Georgia Conservancy article gives a good unbiased summary. In short, I am supporting this one. It provides larger landowners (2000-4000 acres) property tax relief if they keep their property in conservation, agriculture, or forestry for ten years. In Georgia we desperately need any incentives we can get to NOT convert rural land to data centers, solar farms, factories, warehouses, or tract housing. We are being overrun. Would this money go to wealthier landowners? Well, sure, who do you think owns land? With plummeting timber prices due to mill closures, there are a lot of incentives for large landowners to sell. I view most things through a conservation lens. The bottom line here is this will provide more incentives to keep Georgia from being further subdivided, graded, and paved into oblivion. Otherwise we do not have ANY sort of statewide land use regulations and most Georgia counties do not even have local zoning.
Glad to answer questions if you have any.
