Other Tips for applying to GTRI for full time research?

Hi all. I am a soon to be double Jacket (ISyE/OMSA). I live close to one of the ELSYS labs, and am super interested in working for GTRI, especially since at some point I am considering pursuing my PhD. I have applied to a few positions and have gone through some interviews there. For one position, they seemed really interested in me, but the position I applied for had some delays in approval, so it fell through. I am in early round interviews for a different position now. I am wondering if it would give me a leg-up to directly contact someone at GTRI re-iterating my interest given my history with the institute? Any other tips to get me ahead?

Other Regalia Marketplace: Free Platform to Buy & Sell Affordable Grad Regalia

Hi everyone! We’re a group of Georgia Tech students, and we wanted to share something we’ve been working on.

When we were trying to borrow regalia for graduation, we realized how expensive it can be to buy new regalia. So we built a free, simple platform called Regalia Marketplace (regaliamarketplace.com) to make it easier for students to exchange regalia with each other.

How it works:

For buyers:

  • Browse available gowns, caps, hoods, and cords
  • Filter by size and price
  • View photos and details
  • Message the owner directly to arrange pickup and payment

For sellers:

  • List regalia you already own for rent or sale
  • Add size, price, photos, and contact info
  • Verify your account with your gatech email
  • Update or remove your listing anytime

The goal is to make graduation more affordable and less stressful by helping students support one another. We’re still early and would really appreciate any feedback, suggestions, or ideas from the community. Thanks so much for taking a look!

Question dean of students is insistent on meeting with me

hi guys so i needed an extension on an assignment because i had a concussion and decided to go about things the “right way” and submitted my medical documentation to the dean of students so i could get an institute approved absence.

well, the thing about the medical documentation is, the urgent care i went to included in the document that i had a concussion because i was drunk and fell off of a skateboard (it might be important to mention here that i am underage)

anyways, even though i was stressed about possibly getting in trouble for the drunk part, and even though it took too long and was super confusing, i ended up submitting it, but then i just ended up going ahead and emailing my professor my medical documentation (with the drunk skateboarding part blurred out) so i could get the extension (which i did, and i got a 100 on the assignment). ok so here’s the problem

i got an email from the dean of students assistant, saying he wanted to make a time to meet with me. no problem, right? i already got this problem solved, and so i do not need to meet with the dean of students. i email back saying exactly that. but i got an email this morning saying that, apparently, he insists! on meeting me. what the hell. i can’t help but spiral and assume im in trouble in some way. what do i do… i mean obviously i’m going to call to schedule this meeting, but i am going to ask why he wants to meet with me. what could it be about????

Survey/Study/Poll What are some classes that allow the use of AI for any assignment or project?

Our lab is conducting research on AI resilience and needs to find out any classes that allow the use of AI for any assignment or project on one or more assignments. I know some classes like CS 4261: Mobile Apps & Services has AI allowed, but do you know about any other classes?

Rant Do people not care about quiet floors anymore? (Crosland 6)

I know there's always a few randos out there who don't realize this is a quiet floor, but it seems to be getting way worse this semester. People casually chatting with each other at the desks, giggling, and the occasional but intrusive yelling and loud chattering coming from the rooms just one hallway away... Many people are self-conscious enough to shush themselves and others when they notice the "QUIET STUDY" signs (and the glaring stare of everyone else), but every so often there's a select few that just. won't. stop.

I'm not here to shame anyone who had accidentally talked loudly forgetting this is a quiet floor- I've done that once or twice, too. What I fail to understand is why anyone would choose Crosland 6 if they were studying with other people and knew they were gonna discuss. Or worse, if they're just here to chat about non-academic stuff. I'm in the library mostly during late night, and at that time literally 90% of the library is empty. They could have gone anywhere else. Yet they chose to come to a quiet floor, to talk...

Have we forgotten that this is a shared space that is meant to be kept quiet? There are people out there who simply can't focus if there's anyone talking in the environment. Please, be considerate and respect the space!

Question What happens if you loose your GRA?

I'm considering grad school, I got into Mech E BS/MS (thesis). i'm kinda on the fence to start about whether or not I actually want to extend my time at this place 😭😭😭

If I can tuition waived and a stipend, like through a GRA/GTA position, it seems like a pretty good deal on paper. But I'm wondering do I have to reapply each semester for these positions? And if so, how common is it for professors to do that?

I'm worried I'm gonna get a GRA position, then I'm gonna loose it and either have to cough up like 20 grand or drop out and accept that I just wasted a solid chunk of life.

Rant I got robbed at knifepoint a few miles away from GT campus, still processing everything

So I am a Georgia Tech student and I got robbed at knifepoint near Lindbergh Center on October 18. Honestly, what a fucking day.

For context, I was dealing with a flat rear tire on my electric bike, so fixing it is already a bit of a pain. I couldn't really ride it and was trying to figure out what to do.

Then this guy approached me and asked, "Is your bike working?"

At first I didn't think much of it. But he was already within arm's reach, and then he brandished a knife from my left pocket and threatened me with everything

He ended up taking my ebike, wallet with buzzcard, license, credit debit cards, and my jacket.

I've been thinking quite a bit about whether there was anything I could've done differently. I had a hunch there was something wrong but I didn't know if he was armed at the time, and the guy was already so close that trying to run or fight back seemed incredibly risky.

I filed a police report and started canceling my cards afterward. I've spent a good part of today figuring out how to deal with everything in my wallet.

I'm physically safe and unharmed, which is the most important thing. But it's still pretty surreal thinking about the flashbacks.

So here is the PSA, please be extra cautious nowadays. I was not in a hood, but rather in a pretty nice area, there was lights on the street as well. And your safety is most important. I really don't think a bike and a wallet are worth risking your life over.

UPDATE 1: APD was able to recover the ebike, and the guy decided to buy groceries at Kroger 318 near Toco Hills

Question How likely is my situation to get approved for bypassing a prerequisite to a class?

Hi guys,

I am a CS major graduating in Spring 2027. As part of my media thread, my plan for my final semester was to take CS 4460, which is typically offered every semester, but for some reason was not offered only last spring. I emailed the professor of this class for this semester and she mentioned it was on plan to be offered next semester, so I assumed the Spring 2026 thing was a one off.

However, I checked the course offerings and it seems that class is not being offered next semester either. The problem is that due to the lack of other media courses being offered next semester, my only option is to take CS 4455 instead. However, CS 3451 is a prerequisite for CS 4455, but I was planning to take CS 3451 next semester. Do you guys think I will be able to take this as a corequisite?

Rant Teammated copy pasted a lab report from a friend. What do I do?

*teammates (misspelled in title)

In a lab based class and I was finally done with projects for the week. Got a cryptic message from my prof saying he needs to talk with my team. I was worried it was something about ai, but no. They just copy pasted from one from their friend. I don't know what to do. I still have to write four more lab reports and I already do all the main discussion of our data by myself cause I don't trust them to. The profs said the default punishment is the assignment is just a 0 on the assignment, but he needs to mull it over to decide fair punishment. Genuinely what do I do? I do not want to be stuck with these three for the rest of the semester.

Question Seeking Advice - Should I transfer elsewhere because Tech doesn't have the major I really want to study?

So, I'm currently a first-year International Affairs major at Tech. I know it's probably criminal to say this as a Tech student, but I originally really wanted to go to u(sic)ga as a history major because their program seemed right up my alley. I have loved history since I was a kid, and knowing that Tech didn't really have a true history major, I didn't even want to apply here. But as it goes, my mom made me apply "just to see", and lo and behold, I got accepted to Tech and waitlisted at u(sic)ga. (Yes, I know I'm an anomaly for having that scenario, people tell me that every day.) So I started here this past summer in the Ignite program. This fall semester, I've been taking some of the intro-level international affairs classes (specifically Intro to International Relations and Science, Tech, and International Affairs), and I honestly really don't like them one bit. The historical aspects of them are super fascinating to me, but when it comes to the modern application of international relations studies and theoretical lenses, I'm both lost and bored half to death. Not to mention the Elementary Japanese class I'm taking to satisfy the major's language requirement is just beating me into the ground.

Now before you all come for me, I do know that we technically have a History, Technology, and Society major. But honestly, that major just felt way too broad to me and very science-heavy based on what I saw. The course offerings and different specialization options just didn't really appeal to me. But I also could totally just be reading into it wrong because all I have to go off of is course offerings and descriptions, which are usually pretty vague.

To complicate things further, I really don't dislike Tech as a whole. I have a great group of friends, I'm in the marching band and I love practicing and performing, and the campus itself doesn't feel bad or wrong to me in any way. I love all the traditions and am having an amazing time just being here. I just really am not having a pleasant time with my major right now, and I keep coming back to this feeling that Tech just doesn't have anything for me.

I don't want to uproot myself since I do like it here, Tech is obviously a great school, and I also know transferring can be really disorienting, but I also don't want to get a degree in something that isn't really at all interesting to me. Should I just stick it out and see if maybe INTA gets better past the intro-level classes? Do I consider switching to HTS just to see if it's better than it looks? I just feel really stuck and kinda burnt out right now and would appreciate any advice. Thanks!

Edit: Update! I met with the person in charge of undergrad for GT’s School of History and Sociology. She gave me the full rundown of the major, including the 4+1 option, and recommended some classes based on my interests and career goals. Turns out they actually have an Intro to Museum Studies class running next semester, and there’s also plenty of rotating courses in my area of historical interest (history of socialist and communist nations). I’m currently just waiting on people to fill out paperwork, but in a few days I will officially be an HTS major! Thanks so much to everyone who commented and left their advice; having some outside feedback was astronomically helpful. :)

Rant Work arounds for not having a full fall break

Hey guys, I'm a transfer from an institution that doesn't bullshit thanksgiving break and gives us a full week off, and I made plans to see family I don't get to see all year for the break before realizing Georgia Tech's fall break is a nothing burger of three days. Have any of y'all been able to work with your teachers to excuse yourself from class for those two extra days without penalization? I want to make arrangements now.

Hey Tech community!

My small app dev startup, Daydreams Workspace, has published our first app to the App Store. While I was at Tech, I always dreamed of doing something like this, and never thought I would get to the point of starting my own company and releasing something to the public. Now, 5 years later, here we are...it can happen!

If you are a college football fan, would love for some fellow Tech alum/students to check this out and send me any feedback you have.

Appreciate y'all checking this out!

- Erik

EDIT: I went to Tech and didn’t remember to add the link, LOL
