Thinkstagram Picture 1996 IBM ThinkPad 365ED x 2026 Linux kernel 7.3!

Linux kernel 7.3 is now released, and I'm back with more updates on SHORK 486, my Linux distribution for 486 and 586 vintage PCs such as these ol' ThiccPads!

Firstly, SHORK 586 is now technically a thing! I recently added the option to optimise SHORK for various 486 or 586 CPU revisions, and selecting a 586-related option grants the "SHORK 586" nameplate. Right now, the difference is purely optimisation and cosmetics. I anticipate SHORK 486 and 586 will diverge as I test and add things that can make better use of Pentium and Pentium MMX.

I decided to have another crack at getting the vga16fb driver to work so that SHORK can have a framebuffer device on general ISA, VLB and non-VBE2+ PCI display cards, and found some success! I found that Linux text modes (vga=normal, vga=3841, etc.) took precedence, so the driver never bound. I added a kernel command line parameter that allows the driver to be force-bound. The driver is also supposed to work with EGA cards too, yet I found its support of such lacking, so I took care of that too. This means I can finally use SHORKGUI on my 365ED, and a much wider range of pre-PCI PCs! That said, I'm not going to lie, it doesn't run well right now, but it's certainly a start... I'm trying to optimise the stack (TinyX and TWM) and be creative with it to try to improve performance, but at least for ISA, it seems the issues are quite bus-bound. Nano-X is an alternative I'm keeping in mind, if needed.

Finally, I added more ways of getting remote access and transferring files to SHORK. FTP, SCP/SSH, Telnet and TFTP daemons are now available! (I also added a cool splash screen that I forgot to photo, hence the screenshot at the end...)

I was also delighted to see SHORK featured on the This Week in Retro podcast 288! Much thanks to Veronica Explains for their enthusiasm, as always!

Question / Problem T14s low build quality

I bought this Thinkpad t14s gen 2 amd recently after selling my t14 gen 3 intel but comparing those two makes me feel the build quality on the t14s so cheap and the hinges a bit harder to move

Is that normal or should i crack it open to see what is going on?

Review / Opinion My First Thinkpad , (T14 gen 2)

After rigorously trying to find , I finally got it .
It is a T14 gen2 (AMD Ryzen 5 5650U ) with 16 gig soldered , 256 gb samsung nvme (98% health) , it has mediatek wifi card which is ok i have zero issues with that, battery health is at 89% and i am on charge threshold set at 50%-60% as i am always home and paranoid for my battery health dropping lol , its not because i cant replace it but the replacement unit sells costly and that too is very rare to find (online),
build quality of it is solid , feels premium tbh , and i also got lucky on the unit i got because it was the only unit which had backlit other units where without backlit as the seller told ,
About the performance:
It is very efficient , runs cools and performs very well at multitasking , tho temps are good i will replace the thermal paste with ptm7950 after 6 months, (I also noticed that left side of it runs a little warmer than of right when i am using external monitor idk why let me know ) , I got this at 270 usd , overall I think it was a pretty good deal

Both building it out and using as a daily, but the stock panel was just so bad I had to put the display upgrade at the top of the list.

- 1440p display adapter

- AUO B140QAN01.1

- 100% scaling

Hey everyone!
I want to show you my little rescue project! This is a Thinkpad T420, which I found in a pile of none working laptops in a thrift shop. I also found a dock for it too there. I took it home, and started repairing it. I got 2 motherboards for it, one of them had a bad screen controller, but the last one is working properly. I put ram, a used ssd, an mSATA ssd in it, as well as got an ultrabay sata caddy (it already had and optical drive too). Also it got a nice CPU as well. During repair, I accidentally destroyed one of the left speaker's cable, so I had to solve it, with a bit of tape, as well. Right now it is almost maxed out, I'm planning on repairing it's original motherboard, which has some power delivery issues, because it has a dedicated nvidia gpu.

The specs:
- Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-2760QM (8) @ 3.50 GHz, 4 cores, 8 threads
- 16 GB ram
- a 250 GB main ssd, with arch + kde installed
- 250 GB mSATA ssd, with Debian + no DE installed
- New 9 cell battery
- Ultrabay optical drive and sata caddy
- Fingerprint sensor

What do you think? Anything else worth upgrading or experimenting with on the T420?

Review / Opinion Testing Googlebook OS on Thinkpad X13 Gen 2

Post image
64 Upvotes

I tried Googlebook OS on my ThinkPad out of curiosity. I installed it on an external SSD to see how the UX holds up for lightweight office use.

Impressions

  • Chromium-based browsers already support desktop mode on Googlebook OS. Firefox-based browsers don’t yet.
  • The Claude app is not the Claude Desktop version, so it can’t access the local system.
  • Microsoft Office and OnlyOffice are still the mobile versions, which is a bummer.
  • Shizuku and its forks can’t run. I may debug this on an Android device to see whether it works on Googlebook at all.
  • I’m still figuring out how to get Google Drive or Dropbox working like their desktop clients on Linux, macOS, and Windows, with local folder sync that shows up in the file manager.

Hardware

  • Model: ThinkPad X13 Gen 2i (20WLS0B701)
  • CPU: Intel Core i5-1145G7 @ 2.60 GHz (4C/8T, 11th Gen Tiger Lake)
  • RAM: 16 GB
  • GPU: Intel Iris Xe Graphics (i915)
  • Storage: WDC PC SN730 256 GB NVMe
  • Wi-Fi: Intel Wi-Fi 6 AX201
  • Ethernet: Intel Ethernet Connection I219-LM
  • Audio: Intel 500 Series HD Audio (on-package)
  • Fingerprint reader: Synaptics 06cb:00f9

Working

  • DisplayPort via USB-C, including an external 3440x1440 monitor at 165 Hz
  • Camera
  • Audio
  • Microphone
  • Sleep

Not working

  • Fingerprint reader

Not tested

  • HDMI
  • Thunderbolt
  • LAN

Closing thoughts
Whether I’ll use it daily for a month is still an open question. Unless the developers put real work into the PC experience, I’ll likely go back to my current setup on Fedora

Question / Problem Help Increasing Battery Life & Decreasing Temps T14 Gen 3 6650u

Post image
35 Upvotes

Bought this thinkpad secondhand for 470USD.
Specs wise for me its good for another 3-4 years w/ my use case of light CAD, CAM, research etc.

It has a ryzen 5 6650u, and although its supposed to be cooler and longer lasting than the Intel, it lasts maximum of 4 hours on simple web browsing/youtube. It also lasts less than 2 hours on CAD/CAM use.
I have a 39.3wh battery, 129 charge cycles and 94% health

It also idles at 48-51 celsius, even with Win 11 IoT Enterprise LTSC and no autostart apps. My X13 with 5650u idles at only 35 despite being older and having less cooling.

What do you think guys? How do I reduce the temps and increase battery life more?
No I cant go for linux since I need windows dependent apps. Truth be told if my softwares were compatible I wouldve gone to linux/a macbook entirely

Upgrading from 7.9 to 8.0 today. But the larger issue remains: what to do about the stickers? The XP decal is an archeological artifact, and the Core 2 is provenance, street cred like a good/bad tattoo.

What say you good people of r/?

Review / Opinion Good deal i got

Hello thinkpad community, I've been looking for a thinkpad for a while and finally found a good deal on kijiji (canadian craigslist). I wasnt sure what flair to use so please correct me if I should use a different one.

I ended up finding all this for $250CAD which I feel is a pretty good deal. I got a t480, t470, t470 dock, p14s gen 2, a 1tb samsung nvme and 1 45w lenovo charger. Sadly all the batteries that came with the t470 and t480 are completely dead as well as the motherboard on the p14s is fried because the guy tried to put the nvme in with the battery plugged in and shorted something on the motherboard out.I did know there was a problem with the p14s I was just hoping it wouldnt be completely dead but thats the gamble you take with used tech.

I of course put linux on the t480 because thats gonna be my daily driver. I also got all new batteries for the t470 and t480 which i ended up getting the 24wh internal and 72wh hotswappable ones. All in all I think i did pretty good with this deal.

Review / Opinion X9 15p Thinkpad review

Post image

X9 15P Review

For anyone who is deciding between an X9 15p thinkpad or other similar laptop here’s my review of X9 15p after putting it through it’s paces. I’ve been a long time Thinkpad enthusiast and have in my collection the T60, X220, X230, and T480s. The X9 breaks from a lot of Thinkpad traditions so I thought I’d give my opinion since I’m use to a lot of the more classic Thinkpad designs. I'm currently running it on Win 11 but plan to switch to Fedora in the future once better webcam support is enabled.

I got the X7 358H with 32 GB RAM and 1 TB SSD. Price before tax after all coupons: $1680 USD

Build/Durability: Solid and feels more similar to a Macbook Pro than a Traditional T-series Thinkpad. I do have some concerns if it can withstand falls the same way my T480s can as traditionally laptops with an aluminum chassis tend to have frame dents than being able to shrug them off like the magnesium/carbon frames can. It also has the unique “engine hub” which is a plastic housing that expands out the back to allow better air flow and bigger fans. The plastic housing feels pretty well constructed, although it is a noticeable weak point that we will have to see how it holds up with time. One benefit of the X9 15p vs the X9 15 versions is that this newer version seems to have a reinforced metal frame in the middle of the engine hub that is missing from the original 2025 X9 15. This should offer better durability when picking it up by the back like a book. The mesh itself might also be metal but I’m not too sure. I just know on the x9 15 2025 it can dent if you put too much pressure on it. See:

https://www.reddit.com/r/thinkpad/comments/1vjgydm/does_the_new_x9_15p_plastic_dent_prone_in_the/

Screen: Gorgeous. I had concerns the Pixel arrangement of OLEDs would make reading and working with text irritating on my eyes but this does not appear to be the case. Colors are accurate and vibrant. I tend to keep my laptops for a long time so I do have some concerns regarding OLED Burn in. I wouldn’t normally worry about it on a thinkpad since the older models are easy to replace screens but I’m not sure how it would work with the X9.

Speakers: This was shockingly good. People often talk about the Macbook pro 16 in speakers breaking their brain on the unbelievable quality of sound from a laptop – I felt like I had the same experience with the X9 15p speakers. Clarity, instrument separation, and volume were absolutely fantastic. Bass was punchy and crisp which was overall pleasant although true bass heads will likely want more as there are limits to how deep it can get on this frame - but I’m guessing they wouldn’t really be listening to laptop speakers. To put it in perspective, since purchasing the X9 15p, I no longer feel tempted to constantly use my headphones and instead I opt to use the laptop speakers instead for convenience – my headphone collection includes Sennheiser 6xx, HIFIman Sundura, Focal Clears and Blessing 2 Dusks. I have the laptop connected to a Samsung M7 monitor and the speakers from the laptop sound better than the larger speakers in the external monitor so opt to choose the laptop speakers instead.

Keyboard: Out of all my thinkpads, I would say the X9 15p is ranked at the very end. It’s not bad, but comparing it to a classic 7 row or early chiclet keyboard is no contest. The keyboard does have more travel than my Macbook Air but it doesn’t have the same sort of tactile sensation that I’ve grown accustomed to on my old thinkpads and even my macbooks. It has a more softer/mushier sensation that I’m not use to. If you’re a person that uses an old thinkpad for the keyboard and are thinking on upgrading to the X9 I would encourage you to try it out first at a store near you first. Again, it’s not a bad keyboard and it’s better than the Acer, ASUS and MSI laptop models that I’ve tried at Costco. On the plus side, it’s much quieter than my other keyboards so using this in a hotel at night when everyone else is asleep is quite nice but that’s a very niche use overall.

Battery life: It looks like I should be able to get 10+ hours easily with browsing, office documents and netflix/youtube in the background. I honestly haven’t really tried using it on battery too long since I’ve been really taxing it’s performance with plugging it in. Much better than other x86 laptops but my Macbook Air M4 seems to drop % slower compared to the X9.

Performance: This was quite a jump going from my old thinkpads to a modern one. I’ve been able to run 15-20 Chrome tabs/apps, Handbrake decoding a video in the background, a second AI related video processing app in the background, and playing netflix/youtube at the same time while on external monitors as well without any problems. The RAM hovers at 26 GB of use and my CPU and GPU are constantly blasting at 97-99% with this workload. The laptop stay relatively cool even with this setup which is nice and there is zero stutter using it with the background processes.

Price: Without coupons this thing sells for around 3000 USD and I don’t think it’s worth it at that price. However, I think it’s pretty good at the price I for it for. I originally ordered a framework 13 Pro and was in Batch 10 until they dropped my RAM from 32 to 16 gb and the respec to 32 gb would have put the price to around 2600-2800 USD. After seeing how much RAM and multi tasking I am doing on the X9 I am thankful to have found this alternative as I don’t think I would have been happy with the 16 gb of RAM or paying almost 1000 dollars more for similar specs.

Concerns: I do have some concerns regarding the longevity of this machine. It’s a pretty unique device in Lenovo’s lineup and I’m hoping to still be using it in a decade. I partly enjoy thinkpads because of the repair ability aspect but the X9 is not a model with a long track record. It does have easy to replace batteries and from what I read the USB-C ports on both sides are on separate daughter boards so replacement should be easy if part are available. However, unless corporations are buying this en mass, I can imagine replacement parts being harder to find in the future. Individual purchases may also be low since people may instead try to be opting for a more traditional T or X1 carbon series.

One of the things I realized I enjoy about my older thinkpads is the ability to abuse them. I love just throwing my T480s around, chucking it into the trunk with other items and not worrying that it will get damaged – or it it does get damaged knowing that there are cheap replacement parts galore online for the T480s. For right now I’ve been kind of babying the X9 since this is my first new vs old corporate thinkpad. I’m guessing with time I’ll start treating it like I do my other laptops.

I also had some concerns initially if the RTX spark laptops that were recently released would make this laptop immediately obsolete but after release and reviews of those this does not appear to be the case.

Overall: So overall a fantastic laptop that I would recommend as long as the caveats above don’t bother you.

My X250 got some cheap upgrade!

Bought used TP Ultra Dock for ~5€ and picked up a Lenovo ThinkVision LT2323pwA for free, that was supposed to go to recycling center. Display is in great condition, only the regulation knob is damaged, so it's not locking permanently in desired position.

But hey! Even a free or cheap mod, that makes my work easier still counts as a pro-mod! 😁

Question / Problem Rose surrounded by Thorns?

Thumbnail

I work in IT Outsourcing, mainly consulting, big RFPs, Org Change. I had to replace my five year old HP EliteBook. Have not travelled much since COVID and WFH much of the time. Options on the catalog from work were all good machines on the spec sheet, a lightweight Microsoft, mid HP and the Lenovo I chose. TP P14S Gen6 Intel, 32RAM, 1TB, Blackwell 500 GPU. Plus a Lenovo TB4 dock. So I got to work on the best bang for buck home office layout (since this was my money now). Clearance sales, FB, Amazon, even a couple of yard sales!

27” triple screens, arms, desk, chair, rug, speakers, mechanical keyboard, gaming mouse, new cables, cable mgmt tray and Velcro ties, desk mat and mouse mat, cup holder, laptop riser, surge protector power boards, monkey art. Managed to do all of this for USD $650 (I am in Australia).

Not suggesting that any of this is premium besides the Thinkpad but really enjoyed the process. Rose between thorns?

Thoughts about the bang for buck?

Buying Advice ThinkPad T14 Gen 2/3 AMD vs Framework Laptop 12 — Which is better for a student who values repairability and Linux?

I'm a student in Malta looking for a reliable laptop for school that will ideally last me at least 5 years.

I've narrowed my choices down to three laptops:

- ThinkPad T14 Gen 2 AMD — Ryzen 5 PRO 5650U, preferably 16GB RAM

- ThinkPad T14 Gen 3 AMD — Ryzen 5 PRO 6650U, preferably 16GB RAM

- Framework Laptop 12 DIY — Intel Core i3-1315U, 16GB RAM

My original budget was €400 including shipping, but I'm considering whether spending significantly more on a Framework would be worthwhile in the long run.

My priorities:

- Repairability: I want to be able to replace components myself rather than buy another laptop when something breaks.

- Longevity: Ideally, I'd like to keep the laptop for 5–7 years or longer.

- Linux compatibility: I'm planning to use CachyOS or another Arch-based distribution, although I'm also interested in experimenting with FreeBSD.

- Battery life: I'll be commuting to school and need something that can last through several hours of classes.

- Performance: Mostly Obsidian, PDFs, browsing, programming, studying and occasional light gaming.

- Portability: I'll be carrying it to school almost every day.

- Cost: I'm happy to buy used or refurbished, including laptops missing an SSD or charger, provided there is no significant exterior damage or serious motherboard issue.

The T14 Gen 2 AMD appeals to me because it's relatively affordable and still has upgradeable RAM and Wi-Fi.

The T14 Gen 3 AMD offers better performance, integrated graphics and a 16:10 display, but the soldered RAM and Wi-Fi concern me.

The Framework 12 seems like the best choice for repairability and future upgrades, but a complete DIY configuration would cost substantially more than a used ThinkPad.

My questions:

  1. Is the Framework's repairability worth paying roughly twice as much as a used T14?

  2. Between the T14 Gen 2 and Gen 3 AMD, which would you choose for long-term reliability?

  3. How easy and affordable is it to find replacement parts for these ThinkPads?

  4. Which has the best Linux compatibility, particularly with CachyOS or Arch?

  5. Are there any known problems with these models that I should look out for when buying used?

  6. Would you recommend another laptop with better repairability and value?

I'm also open to doing basic repairs and upgrades myself.

I'd appreciate advice from people who have owned these laptops, particularly regarding long-term durability, battery life and the actual cost of maintaining them.

Thanks!

Discussion / Information For people wondering about PTM7950 on their ThinkPad, here are my results

Yesterday I made this post asking about it https://www.reddit.com/r/thinkpad/comments/1xayrg9/question_about_ptm7950_for_my_thinkpad/ but I settled on PTM7950 and here are my results. All of them were with furmark + cpu burner running at the same time for 40 minutes.

Bad thermal paste job (layer way too thick): This is what I did months ago. The cpu would start strong but after 20 minutes or so it'd hit 93c and drop the clock down to 400mhz to protect itself, then it takes a while to go back up.

Good thermal paste job: I put a tiny dot on the CPU, then I used a spatula to spread a very thin, even layer and screwed down the heatsink in cross pattern. This time the cpu never hit 93c. Max I ever saw was 88c and it didn't go to 400mhz.

PTM7950: I cut a piece of it roughly to the size of the silicon die and put it on and tightened the heatsink in a cross pattern. With that same test it never crossed 75c. That's about a 20c difference from a bad thermal paste job and about 10c difference from a good thermal paste job.

TLDR; Based on my testing, normal thermal paste is great if applied properly, but PTM7950 is clearly the superior option. And to make it even better, people are not going to debate you on how you applied it. For PTM, you just cut it to size and stick it on, just remove the plastic cover from it.

EDIT: Forgot to mention. Thinkpad in question is a t14s gen 1 with amd ryzen 4750U
