Buying Advice ¿ThinkPad P1 Gen 6 or P17 Gen 2?

• Upvotes

Hello everyone, I'm looking for a durable laptop for my Mechatronics degree. I have these two options and I'd like to know which one you recommend considering these prices:

ThinkPad P1 Gen 6 (Approx. $1,500 USD)
13th Gen Intel Core i7
NVIDIA RTX 2000 Ada
ThinkPad P17 Gen 2 (Approx. $1,730 USD)
11th Gen Intel Xeon
NVIDIA Quadro RTX 5000 16GB

Knowing that the P1 costs less and has a newer processor, but the P17 is more expensive and has much more dedicated video memory, which of these two configurations better justifies its price and performance for the software used in my major? Thanks!

Question / Problem X1 Carbon Gen 8 Bottom Cover - Captive Screw Replacement

• Upvotes

Hi Everyone,

My ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 8 is missing a couple of the bottom cover retaining / captive screws. I’m looking to replace them and would appreciate help identifying the correct size or part number.

If anyone has purchased replacements that fit, could you share a link or recommend a seller? I’m in the US and would prefer to buy just the screws rather than another bottom cover.

Thanks!

Discussion / Information For people wondering about PTM7950 on their ThinkPad, here are my results

8 Upvotes

Yesterday I made this post asking about it https://www.reddit.com/r/thinkpad/comments/1xayrg9/question_about_ptm7950_for_my_thinkpad/ but I settled on PTM7950 and here are my results. All of them were with furmark + cpu burner running at the same time for 40 minutes.

Bad thermal paste job (layer way too thick): This is what I did months ago. The cpu would start strong but after 20 minutes or so it'd hit 93c and drop the clock down to 400mhz to protect itself, then it takes a while to go back up.

Good thermal paste job: I put a tiny dot on the CPU, then I used a spatula to spread a very thin, even layer and screwed down the heatsink in cross pattern. This time the cpu never hit 93c. Max I ever saw was 88c and it didn't go to 400mhz.

PTM7950: I cut a piece of it roughly to the size of the silicon die and put it on and tightened the heatsink in a cross pattern. With that same test it never crossed 75c. That's about a 20c difference from a bad thermal paste job and about 10c difference from a good thermal paste job.

TLDR; Based on my testing, normal thermal paste is great if applied properly, but PTM7950 is clearly the superior option. And to make it even better, people are not going to debate you on how you applied it. For PTM, you just cut it to size and stick it on, just remove the plastic cover from it.

EDIT: Forgot to mention. Thinkpad in question is a t14s gen 1 with amd ryzen 4750U

Buying Advice Thinking of buying ThinkPad T14 Gen 7 (AMD) for Ubuntu/Linux — any hardware or Wi-Fi quirks?

2 Upvotes

I’m looking at picking up a ThinkPad T14 Gen 7 (AMD) configured with the AMD Ryzen™ 7 PRO 250 CPU, integrated graphics, 16GB DDR5, and a 14" WUXGA touch screen.

My primary OS will be Ubuntu (either 24.04 LTS or 26.04 LTS) for software development and container workflows. However, I noticed this specific SKU isn't explicitly listed on Lenovo's certified Linux page yet, though I did see Fedora 43 listed.

Before committing, I’d love to check with anyone running Linux on this chassis/generation:

  1. Wi-Fi 7 (MediaTek MT7925): Does the MT7925 chip work out-of-the-box on recent kernels, or are there missing firmware/driver issues during initial setup?

  2. Power & Sleep: How is idle power consumption and sleep state (s2idle) battery drain under Linux?

  3. Peripherals: Any known issues with the fingerprint reader, 5MP IR webcam, or touch display (I hope I can disable the touch display)?

Alternatively, I’m considering an M5-series MacBook Air (32GB RAM), but I’d prefer native Linux/Docker support over macOS if this ThinkPad is solid.

Buying Advice MacBook Pro vs Thinkpad x9 15p

1 Upvotes

I’ve been looking into getting a ThinkPad X9 15p with the u5 338h recently. I can get that model for $1746 before tax, and all the reviews are really encouraging, but my biggest problem is battery life. Coming from a MacBook Pro M series, I can easily get 16+ hours of real use that’s mostly browser-based media consumption and research (I like premium laptops). How will the ThinkPad stack up, and would I be disappointed? Any advice is welcome.

Odd/interesting/unique/low production Lenovo Thinkpads?

6 Upvotes

There are tons of IBM thinkpads that are cool and unique, but they are all very expensive and quite old. I'm talking about newer ones, at least a 3rd gen Intel CPU.

Like:
T430u/T431s
T25 (25th anniversary edition)

and that's kinda where my list ends. I've had a T25, and I probably won't buy another, but I wouldn't mind adding some of the others to my collection if they are inexpensive.

Buying Advice ThinkPad T14 Gen 5 vs ThinkPad T14 Gen 7

9 Upvotes

Looking at two listings right now, one on ebay and one on the Lenovo site. Just wanted to gather some opinions on which one to snag. The Lenovo site one is priced with a discount already applied. Black Friday is also around the corner but I'm sure I already missed the big discount days of the Aug-Sept period where the big electronics deals happen.

ebay:
ThinkPad T14 Gen 5 (21MC004YUS) ~$1450
* AMD Ryzen™ 7 PRO 8840U Processor
* 32GB DDR5-5600 RAM (2 × 16GB)
* 512GB G4 Performance SSD
* AMD Radeon™ 780M Graphics
* 14" WUXGA Display (From what I can tell based on PSREF, it's IPS 400nits Anti-glare, 45% NTSC, 60Hz)
* Qualcomm Wi-Fi 6E NFA725A 2x2 AX
~~
Lenovo:
ThinkPad T14 Gen 7 (21WV0007US) ~$1420
* AMD Ryzen™ AI 7 PRO 450 Processor (2.00 GHz up to 5.10 GHz)
* 16 GB DDR5-5600MT/s (SODIMM) (1 × 16GB)

Question / Problem I bought a refurbished X13 Gen 1.

1 Upvotes

Sorry if the English in my post is a bit rough; I’m using a translator. I bought the laptop on Amazon, and everything works correctly except for the power button, which requires a bit of a trick to get it to work. I really like the laptop, and I’m not sure what to do—should I return it for a refund, or try to keep using it despite the defect? I was really looking forward to this laptop, so I’m struggling with what to decide. Aesthetically, it’s perfect, and it met all my expectations.

Question / Problem T14 gen2 throttling after startup

2 Upvotes

I have a ThinkPad T14 Gen 2 (Intel i5). The laptop boots up normally, and the fan spins briefly at startup.

After that, the fan stops spinning completely. The CPU starts getting hotter, and after a few minutes, the system freezes entirely due to thermal throttling.

What I've tried so far:

Swapped out the SSD

Tested with different RAM / toggled onboard RAM (enabled/disabled)

Could the fan itself be the faulty component, even though it spins briefly at boot? Any advice or troubleshooting tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Review / Opinion X9 15p Thinkpad review

X9 15P Review

For anyone who is deciding between an X9 15p thinkpad or other similar laptop here’s my review of X9 15p after putting it through it’s paces. I’ve been a long time Thinkpad enthusiast and have in my collection the T60, X220, X230, and T480s. The X9 breaks from a lot of Thinkpad traditions so I thought I’d give my opinion since I’m use to a lot of the more classic Thinkpad designs. I'm currently running it on Win 11 but plan to switch to Fedora in the future once better webcam support is enabled.

I got the X7 358H with 32 GB RAM and 1 TB SSD. Price before tax after all coupons: $1680 USD

Build/Durability: Solid and feels more similar to a Macbook Pro than a Traditional T-series Thinkpad. I do have some concerns if it can withstand falls the same way my T480s can as traditionally laptops with an aluminum chassis tend to have frame dents than being able to shrug them off like the magnesium/carbon frames can. It also has the unique “engine hub” which is a plastic housing that expands out the back to allow better air flow and bigger fans. The plastic housing feels pretty well constructed, although it is a noticeable weak point that we will have to see how it holds up with time. One benefit of the X9 15p vs the X9 15 versions is that this newer version seems to have a reinforced metal frame in the middle of the engine hub that is missing from the original 2025 X9 15. This should offer better durability when picking it up by the back like a book. The mesh itself might also be metal but I’m not too sure. I just know on the x9 15 2025 it can dent if you put too much pressure on it. See:

https://www.reddit.com/r/thinkpad/comments/1vjgydm/does_the_new_x9_15p_plastic_dent_prone_in_the/

Screen: Gorgeous. I had concerns the Pixel arrangement of OLEDs would make reading and working with text irritating on my eyes but this does not appear to be the case. Colors are accurate and vibrant. I tend to keep my laptops for a long time so I do have some concerns regarding OLED Burn in. I wouldn’t normally worry about it on a thinkpad since the older models are easy to replace screens but I’m not sure how it would work with the X9.

Speakers: This was shockingly good. People often talk about the Macbook pro 16 in speakers breaking their brain on the unbelievable quality of sound from a laptop – I felt like I had the same experience with the X9 15p speakers. Clarity, instrument separation, and volume were absolutely fantastic. Bass was punchy and crisp which was overall pleasant although true bass heads will likely want more as there are limits to how deep it can get on this frame - but I’m guessing they wouldn’t really be listening to laptop speakers. To put it in perspective, since purchasing the X9 15p, I no longer feel tempted to constantly use my headphones and instead I opt to use the laptop speakers instead for convenience – my headphone collection includes Sennheiser 6xx, HIFIman Sundura, Focal Clears and Blessing 2 Dusks. I have the laptop connected to a Samsung M7 monitor and the speakers from the laptop sound better than the larger speakers in the external monitor so opt to choose the laptop speakers instead.

Keyboard: Out of all my thinkpads, I would say the X9 15p is ranked at the very end. It’s not bad, but comparing it to a classic 7 row or early chiclet keyboard is no contest. The keyboard does have more travel than my Macbook Air but it doesn’t have the same sort of tactile sensation that I’ve grown accustomed to on my old thinkpads and even my macbooks. It has a more softer/mushier sensation that I’m not use to. If you’re a person that uses an old thinkpad for the keyboard and are thinking on upgrading to the X9 I would encourage you to try it out first at a store near you first. Again, it’s not a bad keyboard and it’s better than the Acer, ASUS and MSI laptop models that I’ve tried at Costco. On the plus side, it’s much quieter than my other keyboards so using this in a hotel at night when everyone else is asleep is quite nice but that’s a very niche use overall.

Battery life: It looks like I should be able to get 10+ hours easily with browsing, office documents and netflix/youtube in the background. I honestly haven’t really tried using it on battery too long since I’ve been really taxing it’s performance with plugging it in. Much better than other x86 laptops but my Macbook Air M4 seems to drop % slower compared to the X9.

Performance: This was quite a jump going from my old thinkpads to a modern one. I’ve been able to run 15-20 Chrome tabs/apps, Handbrake decoding a video in the background, a second AI related video processing app in the background, and playing netflix/youtube at the same time while on external monitors as well without any problems. The RAM hovers at 26 GB of use and my CPU and GPU are constantly blasting at 97-99% with this workload. The laptop stay relatively cool even with this setup which is nice and there is zero stutter using it with the background processes.

Price: Without coupons this thing sells for around 3000 USD and I don’t think it’s worth it at that price. However, I think it’s pretty good at the price I for it for. I originally ordered a framework 13 Pro and was in Batch 10 until they dropped my RAM from 32 to 16 gb and the respec to 32 gb would have put the price to around 2600-2800 USD. After seeing how much RAM and multi tasking I am doing on the X9 I am thankful to have found this alternative as I don’t think I would have been happy with the 16 gb of RAM or paying almost 1000 dollars more for similar specs.

Concerns: I do have some concerns regarding the longevity of this machine. It’s a pretty unique device in Lenovo’s lineup and I’m hoping to still be using it in a decade. I partly enjoy thinkpads because of the repair ability aspect but the X9 is not a model with a long track record. It does have easy to replace batteries and from what I read the USB-C ports on both sides are on separate daughter boards so replacement should be easy if part are available. However, unless corporations are buying this en mass, I can imagine replacement parts being harder to find in the future. Individual purchases may also be low since people may instead try to be opting for a more traditional T or X1 carbon series.

One of the things I realized I enjoy about my older thinkpads is the ability to abuse them. I love just throwing my T480s around, chucking it into the trunk with other items and not worrying that it will get damaged – or it it does get damaged knowing that there are cheap replacement parts galore online for the T480s. For right now I’ve been kind of babying the X9 since this is my first new vs old corporate thinkpad. I’m guessing with time I’ll start treating it like I do my other laptops.

I also had some concerns initially if the RTX spark laptops that were recently released would make this laptop immediately obsolete but after release and reviews of those this does not appear to be the case.

Overall: So overall a fantastic laptop that I would recommend as long as the caveats above don’t bother you.

Discussion / Information Hot or cold take? Framework laptops are just Rolexes for computer geeks

0 Upvotes

I get what Framework is trying to do, but the sheer amount of existing business customers that Lenovo Thinkpads have will always make it the better value once they hit the used market every year. Used Thinkpads (and other retired fleet computers) are cheaper, have more parts immediately available vs Framework's new spare parts that have yet to be made, and can be just as thin/light as Frameworks instead of the chunky old-school models that people commonly associate with the name.

I have no idea why anyone should consider the FW12 when used X1 Yogas exist for a quarter of the price. Buy some vinyl wrap or something if you want a colorful 2-in-1, instead of buying into an ecosystem where you have to wait for the FW12's display to not have terrible colors (which will also cost a shit-ton when that new screen is available.)

What made me write this post is how every used laptop from an operation as small as Framework holds their value like crazy on eBay and such, almost to the point of absurdity even after all these years. I think Framework laptops have the same lifestyle appeal as people who buy Discord Nitro: you look cooler in younger Linux circles supporting a brand with "a mission," but it's getting to the point where I don't think the economics of Framework's model are going to pan out. They're too niche to catch up to how vast the used Thinkpad ecosystem is, and the AI chip crisis might be the nail in the coffin for them. The cheapest Framework laptop on eBay right now is a 13th gen Intel for $1050. https://ebay.io/m/aQmKU0

TL;DR Am I missing something here? Is there actually any merit to voting with your dollar on Framework in the long run? Because otherwise I don't see the point of buying from the company compared to a used Thinkpad, unless you want something for geeks that's as superficial as a nice car or watch. New business laptops like the Thinkpad are always going to need repairability by default. What is the end goal of everyone setting their wallets on fire for these people??

I'm too scared to post this in r/framework lol

Question / Problem x61s + OpenBSD. Keep the stickers?

Upgrading from 7.9 to 8.0 today. But the larger issue remains: what to do about the stickers? The XP decal is an archeological artifact, and the Core 2 is provenance, street cred like a good/bad tattoo.

What say you good people of r/?
