[Discussion] Does the original Earthworm Jim still hold up?

Post image
190 Upvotes

I've been thinking about going back to the first Earthworm Jim. I remember how weird and creative this game was, and honestly, you don't see that kind of personality in every game these days.

The animations are still great, the humor is ridiculous, and some of the levels are just completely insane. But I'm curious how it feels to play today, without nostalgia doing half the work.

Is the gameplay still fun, or does the difficulty get frustrating? I'm especially curious about the controls and level design, since older platformers could be pretty unforgiving.

For those who've played it recently, did you still enjoy it, or did it feel better in your memories?)))

[Nice find!] Bulk Trash save - original Turok double sided poster

Post image
53 Upvotes

I found this while walking home from dropping my kids off at school. It was rolled up waiting outside for the trash and I noticed the retinal O and the K looked very familiar to me from afar rolled up. Glad I stopped and grabbed it. It looks to be an original double sided promo poster from the game release. It’s fairly dirty and the stitching is coming out in places. Would like to get it restored if it is in fact original! Any help would be appreciated!

Wow. What a bizarre but fun game. The thing that drove me crazy at first was the slide puzzles. My brain basically broke on the first one. It took me an embarrassingly long time to get the patterns down. After I realized to do it in chunks it became kinda fun tbh. All the other mini-games were fun as well…except for guess the coffin. The devs just clearly ran out of damn ideas and shoehorned it in lol. The main levels were tons of fun and full of goofy stuff. I liked searching for each Simpson family member and figuring out their gimmick. The first game felt way more like a chore than this one and had a less interesting plot. The platforming also felt more forgiving in this in this one…except for a few certain spots…like the entire Mausoleum level. Holy shit that was a slog. About 80% of the lives I banked were lost in that back & fort monstrosity. The sheer length of that level was crazy as hell. It felt like another thing that the devs were just like, “Anyone got any other ideas?…no?…Okay we’ll just repeat it 6 times and make the entire bottom insta-death.
I loved the Krusty and the Smithers interludes and the story was hilarious for a NES era game. I think they def did justice to the franchise. Overall it was a really hard game, but mostly due to the slippery controls mixed with crazy tight platforming areas and just how many blind jumps one has to do to make sure you don’t miss any secrets. Special mention to the final bonus levels before the final boss. The way the sides of the levels were old film reels that would move you up & down to the next sections as they spun was really cool.
Recommend for anyone who loves the Simpsons AND difficult games. It’s no Ghosts n Goblins, but having limited lives/no continues makes it a serious slog for anyone who isn’t into difficult NES games.

[Discussion] With the new GTA coming out, how many of you have fond memories of the top down games?

I don't remember much from GTA1 but I was big into GTA2. I loved getting a tank and just causing mayhem, just like how people play modern GTA I guess. I don't think I ever did an actual storyline mission. Also it had a dedicated fart and burp button.

Special shoutout to GTA London. Whenever I tell people I played an official GTA game set in London they think I'm talking nonsense.

[Question] Any SuperStation owners here? Would you recommend it?

I play all of my retro games through emulators on an older PC, and while the 8 and 16 bit generation works perfectly and look good enough, it struggle siwht the 32 bit systems. Playstation games are playable, but look terrible, 3DO looks bad and is barely playable, and forget about Sega Saturn. I looked into buying the original consoles, but a Saturn and 3DO would run me close to 1K. The SuperStation looks like my best bet, but Im wondering if its too good to be true.

[Discussion] Donkey Kong Land trilogy

I'm a huge fan of the Donkey Kong country trilogy on SNES, I've completed them at their max percentage on multiple occasions. I also own the Donkey Kong Land trilogy on Gameboy and I've played the first and second games as I was growing up but never beat them. I remember DKL 1 physics being terrible but liking DKL2. Should I bother beating those games? My save battery are dead but I have those games on my 3ds so I could play them without worrying about that, I also have the Japanese only GBC version of DKL3 on there.

So what do you think, should I even bother?

[Discussion] Is it worth selling my $3,000ish retro gaming collection on eBay?

I am in the middle of moving right now, and it really hit me how many games and systems I have that I don't ever play. I mostly emulate, so I am thinking of pairing down about 90% of my collection. I would love to keep them, but we really don't have the space. We're trying for another kid soon, too, so space will become even more limited.

But I don't really have a very active eBay account, so I don't know how much I would get for it. 30+ ratings and all for buying, not selling. There's a retro store by my place, but I know they won't give me anywhere near as much as I could get if I sold it myself.

But after the time and materials spent to ship things on my own eBay account, would it even be worth it?

What do you guys think is the best way to move a collection with an estimated worth of around $3,000?

[Other] 3DO Release List

Definitive 3DO Release List

Back in 2014 I made a list of all the released 3DO titles out there. I've seen other lists out there, but I had some extra columns for lightgun and mouse support, #of discs, etc. I also included all software and educational titles, demos, kiosk software... anything that has been dumped from a CD (excluding homebrews and prototypes). I found 416 unique titles, at the time (2014) I was posting on the 3DO Zone Forums and that list was believed to be complete. We actually discovered a lot of rare titles that were once only rumors, like Oilman and the Toyota kiosk discs. I'm curious to know if any more titles have been discovered since then!

A few notes for anyone who wants to use it or help refine it:

  • This list DOES NOT contain any unreleased games, homebrew, or prototypes.  However, it DOES include unofficially released games (Powerslide and Icebreaker 2, for example).  It also DOES contain magazine coverdiscs and demos.
  • Since Japanese games can be written in Romaji or translated ( for example:  Sotsugyou Final/Graduation Final), and since some games had different names for different regions, I have chosen to have 3 categories for the game names.  While I have 4 region categories, I chose to leave Korean translations out, as most are known to English speakers by common names.
  • Some Japanese games are simply known to English speakers by their translated names, while others were localized and given new names.  As such, the US/UK name column should contain the US/UK name if it was localized in English, or the most common translation if it was only released in Japan.
  • The columns for US, EU, JP, and KO are for the release regions.  If the game was released in that particular region, it should have a “1” in the corresponding cell.  I will eventually audit these columns and use a “0” if I know that a game was never released in that area, but for a now, a blank cell could mean that it wasn’t released in that region or it may have been released there but I haven’t checked yet.
  • While the 3DO was available in many countries, I only have a “release” column for the US, Europe, Japan, and Korea, as to my knowledge, these were the only countries to have exclusives.
  • The Developer/Pubisher column can get a bit messy, as many sites often confuse the two.  Ideally, these would be separate columns.  Maybe some day…
  • Outside of the region columns, any blank cell should be considered “unknown”.  Filled cells should contain no errors, please let me know if you find one!!

LAST UPDATE NOTES: 12/17/2014

  • Added several demos, including those published as part of the Demo Disc Program.
  • Filled most blanks in “Genre”, “Developer/Publisher”, and “Year” columns.  Unknown data has been marked “UNKNOWN”, any info on these entries would be greatly appreciated.
  • Added columns for Lightgun and Mouse support
  • Added separate entries for the mail-in only discs Killing Time 1.1 and ESPN Golf: Lower Your Score with Tom Kite – Mental Messages*.*
  • Updated entries for Warp’s Flopon/Furopon series to avoid confusion.
  • REMOVALS: Dragon Knight III/Knights of Xentar*; duplicate entries for* Kamachi’s Museum
  • MERGED: Kurokishi no Kamen & Ghost Hunter*;* FireBall!! & Real Pinball*;* Igo Time Trial 2 & Book of Life and Death*;* Sangokushi IV & Romance of the 3 Kingdoms*;* Tozasareta Yakata & Killing Time.
  • Thanks to ‘goldenband’, ‘Austin’, ‘FUJISAN’, ‘3DO Si’ and everyone at the old 3DO Zone Forums!

[Question] SNES RetroTink vs Analogue Super Nt

How does picture quality compare between the two? I like the idea of using original hardware, but as someone with no RetroTink experience, I’m concerned it won’t upscale acceptably.

I’m also concerned about my original hardware falling apart, but that’s another thing.

[Help!] Game installing, but not running.

Post image
3 Upvotes

I was able to get Reader Rabbit Preschool to install on my computer (running Windows 11) by using the 32 bit package. The setup worked fine. However, when I go to run the game from the installed program folder on the (C:) drive I get a "CD could not be found" error even though my computer shows the Disk as being in the (D:) drive. The "Test Drive" program in the same folder loads and opens, but does not run. I've tried running the main game as admin and in compatibility mode for Windows XP (a supported version for the game) and the same issue arises. I have no idea what is causing this, or what to do to fix this. Any ideas? Thanks

Edit: this problem only happens with Reader Rabbit Preschool. Kindergarten through 2nd grade all work flawlessly using the 32 bit files to setup and run.

[Discussion] Which old game would you love to see remade because its mechanics still have no real equivalent today?

Post image
501 Upvotes

I’ve been thinking about this lately: which old game do you wish someone would bring back in a modern form, specifically because it did something so unique that nothing today really comes close?

For me it’s Heretic. I still get nostalgic about it. The weapons had so much personality: the Phoenix Rod, the Hellstaff, the Firemace raining spheres everywhere, the Gauntlets of the Necromancer draining life out of enemies. Then there was the Tome of Power, which completely transformed every weapon into a supercharged version. And of course the Morph Ovum, which turned enemies into chickens. Watching a fearsome undead warrior suddenly become a clucking chicken never got old.

Add the inventory system, flying with the Wings of Wrath, and the dark fantasy setting, and it felt full of imagination. After Heretic, Doom honestly started to feel a bit primitive to me, like it was all guns and no magic.

Modern boomer shooters have brought back a lot of the old-school feel, but I haven’t seen anything that really captures that blend of spells, item-based power-ups and pure creative weirdness.

So what’s yours? Which old game had mechanics you still miss, and what would you want a modern version to keep or change?

[Discussion] Older games you wish weren’t impossible to get into

Lately something I was observing was how some games on the Sega Genesis/ Mega Drive have a very high difficulty level where the game is so hard that the tutorial level cannot be beaten.

To provide an example, I will mention Back to the Future Part 3 as I have seen how some people have attempted to beat the first level, such as Vinny from Vinesauce and AVGN as both greatly struggled to get through the Wild West stage as it’s such a hard game that I have no idea what the other stages are like.

[Question] Retron5 Save States

Question for the masses- picked up a retron5 not long ago. Its advertises 10 save states per game. Question 1- about how many save states does the internal memory support? Couple dozen? Hundreds? Thousands? I saw you can get more with a micro sd, but prices are insane right now. Question 2- if you eject the game and play something else, do the save states remain?

[Discussion] Times when classic games had a high number of ports

Post image
86 Upvotes

So let me see how to explain it, well lately I was doing an observation on how some games way back in the 8 bit era were given a massive amount of ports as I just found it interesting how one game would be ported onto at least 10 different platforms.

I wanted to use Double Dragon pictured above as an example since the game just stuck out to me for how many different ports it received as I must have counted at 15 versions of the game from arcade to NES, then to the Atari 2600 version for some reason that I wanted to get a better understanding of why some gaming publishers did that sort of practice back then.
