My mom accidentally dropped Diet Coke on my Mac keyboard

Post image

Basically, half a can of Diet Coke spilled directly onto my MacBook keyboard. I immediately cleaned up the liquid, turned the laptop upside down, and used a hair dryer on the cold setting. It’s been kept upside down for the last one and a half hours. Should I take it to a repair shop tomorrow to get it checked for any internal liquid damage, just to be safe? 😭😭😭😭😭

My Neo makes me want a Pro. (Review from a windows/Android user)

Post image

The Macbook Neo was my first ever Apple purchase and my first laptop in over 10 years. I am a windows user as I am a PC gamer and I have been using Androids basically my whole life. I started school back in August of 2025 and at first it was fine doing all the work I needed to on my main PC but I just wanted the portability the laptop provides. Also got it before the price increase and I got my student discount!

I use my Neo for schoolwork, light coding, Youtube/Twitch viewing, and even tried some light gaming. The 8gb of ram hasn't been an issue at all. Sure I'd like 16 or 32 but for what I needed back when I bought the neo 8 is enough.

When it comes to adjusting to the Apple world... It did take a minute to learn the keyboard shortcuts and I still sometimes try and do windows+shift+S for screenshot which ofc does not work on the mac.

Now android world. I do not plan on switching to Iphone as I love the Android ecosystem but If you are also an Android user and questioning if you should get a mac just hear this. There are plenty of apps to make up for the lack of "apple magic" stuff like KDE connect has been a lifesaver and so cool to mess around with software I otherwise would have no reason to use.

Overall I am very happy with my purchase and hope to get at least a few years out of this boy before I get a pro one day.

Am I cooked or just stupid ?

So, I just bought a MacBook Pro 15-inch (I think from 2012, but I'm not sure) for €10 at a used market. The seller told me he didn't know if it worked or not. For €10, I decided to take the risk—at most, I can sell the working spare parts and get back more than 10 bucks.
When I took it home and opened it up, there was neither a battery nor an HDD inside, but at least the 4 GB of RAM were there. I put in my own HDD, and using the included 60W charger (I know it requires an 85W one, but I don't have it), I managed to turn it on by using an SMC bypass key combination I found online.
At first, I saw green dots in the black areas of the screen and almost resigned myself to a dead GPU. However, when it boots into the Internet Recovery section with the white screen, the display is absolutely perfect—not even a single pixel out of place!
The problem is, as soon as the Internet Recovery loading bar reaches 100%, the MacBook completely shuts down and restarts. Is this the charger's fault? Is it a motherboard issue? Or am I just an idiot and it simply refuses to work properly without a battery?
(Sorry for bad English)

visual studio

So, I have a MacBook Air M2, and I’m studying computer science. One of our courses is Visual Programming, where we use Visual Studio 2012 and Visual Basic (VB.NET), not C#, C++, or any other language.

Is there any way to work with VB.NET on my Mac without using a virtual machine? I haven’t been able to find a any alternative to Visual Studio that supports it.

Every Apple M chip on one calm page: I got tired of endless benchmark tables and made my own

Post image
149 Upvotes

Every time I wanted to compare M-series chips, I ended up scrolling through pages of near-identical rows: the same chip in six Macs, three binned versions, MacBook Air scores next to Mac Studio scores, all under ads. Finding out "is an M5 Pro actually faster than an M4 Max?" took way longer than it should.

So I made the page I wanted:

  • One row per chip. By default each chip shows once, in its base configuration (20 chips, M1 to M6). There's a toggle if you want the higher-core versions too (29 total).
  • Each chip scored in the Mac that cools it best, so throttling doesn't make a chip look worse than it is. Tbh, cooling does not make big jumps across benchmarks.
  • Two bars per row: CPU multi-core and GPU (Metal), both from Geekbench 7. Sort by either one.
  • Calm to look at. Warm colours, light and dark mode, no ads, no pop-ups, no sign-up.
  • Five languages: English, Turkish, Spanish, Hindi, Chinese.

A couple of things it made obvious right away: the 15-core M5 Pro now beats the 24-core M2 Ultra on CPU, and an old M2 Max still out-draws a new M5 Pro on GPU. Also M6 base is now toe to toe with M1 Ultra on CPU.

Disclosure: I made it, it's on my personal site: onurilgaz.dev/m-tier-list

Should I sell my MacBook Air power adapter?

Post image
13 Upvotes

I got this Macbook Air m4 last year, it came with a Apple power adapter 35w double usb c ports, but before I getting this Macbook, I had these two Anker power adapters (140w) 4 ports and 160w 3 ports. The Apple power adapter is vert slow, not travel friendly and I barely uses. My question is if I should sell? Here in Europe I believe I can sell for 30 euros on Vinted. But I'm afraid when I go to sell the Macbook one day it can decrease a lot the value (more than 30 euros). Main reason I'm thiking this is because I'm planning to move countries next year, and briging extra things that I don't use is not ideal.

Adjusting magic mouse speed?

• Upvotes

My Logitech handles the mouse flying all over the screen then slowing down when I need to when clicking on things. I can’t figure out how to make the magic mouse do the same thing, it’s just too fast all over. And I’ve changed the sensitivity stuff in settings but then it’s just too slow.

This is the main reason i bought Macbook. For Battery + Adaptability. This is where windows laptop fail. I am not hater and both are good in their specific conditions, but clearly MacBook wins here.

Title: MacBook Neo vs MacBook Air M5 — Which is the better long-term investment for college?

Hi everyone!

I’m trying to decide between the MacBook Neo and MacBook Air M5, and I’d appreciate some honest advice.

I currently have an older 13-inch MacBook Air (2020), but unfortunately, its screen is cracked and I can no longer use it. I’m now considering whether to repair it or buy a new MacBook.

I’ll mainly use my laptop for:

  1. Watching Netflix, YouTube, and other streaming services.

    1. Studying Early Childhood Education, particularly Infant & Toddler and Special Needs programs.
    2. Creating PowerPoint presentations and Canvas designs for college assignments.
    3. Using Microsoft Word, PDFs, online learning platforms, and other study tools.
    4. Saving documents, presentations, photos, and some downloaded videos.
    5. Playing games occasionally.
    6. My budget is flexible, but I want to make a sensible investment and keep my next laptop for around 5–7 years.

My main options are the MacBook Neo and MacBook Air M5.
A few questions:

  1. Would the MacBook Neo be sufficient for my college work, PowerPoint, Canva, streaming, and occasional gaming?

  2. Is 8GB of RAM enough, or would I benefit significantly from more memory?

  3. How do the Neo and Air compare in terms of heat, battery life, multitasking, and long-term performance?

  4. Is the MacBook Air M5 worth paying more for if I want my laptop to last 5–7 or more years?

  5. Would it be worth repairing my 2020 MacBook Air with the cracked screen instead of buying a new one?

  6. Would a Windows laptop offer better value for my needs?

I’m in Canada, so Canadian prices matter. I’d especially appreciate advice from people who own these models or have experience using them for college and everyday tasks.

What would you choose in my situation, and why? Thanks!

I wanted LDAC on my MacBook, so I ended up building my first app (7 free license keys)

Hi everyone :)

After moving, I ended up with a MacBook, an iPhone, and my Sony WH-1000XM3s. I liked my Apple setup. I loved the headphones too. Then I ran into one small thing that bothered me much more than I expected: I couldn’t use LDAC with them on my MacBook.

For anyone unfamiliar with it, LDAC is one of the codecs used to send audio over Bluetooth. My headphones supported it, but I couldn’t select it on my Mac. The headphones worked, of course. I just wanted the choice to use a feature they already had.

I looked into workarounds and external transmitters. I know a dongle is a perfectly reasonable solution, but I really didn’t want another thing sticking out of my laptop just to listen to music. I wanted to open an app, connect my headphones, and listen.

I couldn’t find a solution that suited my setup, so eventually I thought, okay, I’m a developer. Maybe I can build it myself.

That’s how Lucid started. A small personal frustration somehow became my first commercial app.

Lucid lets you use LDAC or aptX HD with compatible Bluetooth headphones on an Apple silicon Mac. You can choose the codec, bitrate, and sample rate in the app. The video shows it with my XM3s.

It’s still a young project. The early release had some rough edges, and feedback from people trying it has helped me improve startup, removal, and diagnostics. There are now help cards with things to check if something goes wrong, and you can send me a diagnostic report directly from the app.

You can find it at https://lucidcore.app.
It needs an Apple silicon Mac running macOS 14.2 or later. There’s a free 3-hour trial, and a lifetime license normally costs $9.99, with no subscription. I’m the developer, so yes, this is my own paid app.

I’d like to give seven people here a free lifetime license. If you’d like one, please send me a private message. You’re welcome to try the free trial first and ask for a key afterwards. I’d love to hear how it works with your MacBook and headphones, but feedback is completely optional. You don’t owe me a review in exchange for a key.

Before anyone installs it, there’s something I want to be upfront about. Lucid uses a privileged system helper for its Bluetooth functionality, so the installer asks for administrator permission. If you decide it isn’t for you, choose “Remove Lucid” in the Lucid Installer-Uninstaller to remove the app and its helper. Keep system Bluetooth on during removal.

I’m keeping my own source code closed for now because I hope to make a living from building software. This is my first commercial project, though, and I don’t have an established reputation or years of happy customers to point to yet. I understand that asking someone to install unfamiliar software, especially something that needs administrator permission, is asking for trust.

So if you don’t feel comfortable doing that, that’s okay. Really. It’s your Mac, and being careful makes sense. I just hope you can understand my side too: I made something I wanted to use myself, and I’d love to keep improving it for other people. I know that trust will have to come from what I do over time.

I’d be interested to hear how other MacBook owners handle this. Do you use the default Bluetooth setup, an external transmitter, or a wired connection? Was codec support something you thought about when choosing your headphones?

Need Suggestion: Worth replacing the battery or buy a new Mac?

I have a MacBook Air M1 (2020) with 8GB RAM and 512GB storage. It still runs well, and everything works fine, but since February, I've noticed that the battery has been draining way too quickly. Over the last 5–6 months, it's practically become a desktop. It can't run for even a second without being plugged in and stays at 1% battery all the time. Because of this, it also lags quite a bit whenever I try to multitask.

I still really love it and don't want to buy a new one because they're just too damn expensive now. I'm considering replacing the battery, which would cost around INR 15K, but I'm not sure that's the best decision. I'm also a little worried that opening it up for a battery replacement might somehow damage it permanently or cause me to lose all my data.

Macbook Pro M1 32gb vs Air M5 16gb for music production?

Hi, I'm looking for a MacBook for music production. I usually use six instances of Serum 2 or Zenology, and some plugins like Shaperbox 3 and Portal, which are native to FL Studio. I'm torn between a Pro M1 with 32GB or 16GB of RAM and an Air M5 with 16GB of RAM. I currently have a desktop PC with a Ryzen 7 8700g and 32GB of RAM, and it works perfectly, but I need portability. Could someone please help me choose? Thanks!

Would a Base Macbook air m5 be an upgrade in terms of after effects and editing workflow compared to my current laptop?

Hi guys, i was looking to upgrade my laptop, because it has been really struggling in terms of video editing. i originally bought it for gaming and school work, but i graduated now, and would like to spend more time on my video editing hobby.

im making 2-3 minute long edits in After Effects, using a lot of layers, i even made a 10 minute long animation once with rendering out clips in Ae and piecing them together in premier. but lately i realized my CPU isnt really strong enough for what i want anymore.

my current specs are:

Lenovo LOQ equipped with:

  • Processor (CPU): Intel Core i5-12450HX
  • Graphics (GPU): NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060
  • Memory (RAM): 24 GB

in my country, with my phone provider the only options i would have are: Base Mac Mini M6, or a Macbook Air M5 base

These are the only options my phone provider provides on their site, and i would only buy it from them. would either of these be an upgrade? i know im missing 8 gigs of ram, but my bottleneck has been my cpu, so i do wonder if this would feel better. also i heard that Macs have better Ram management then windows Laptops.

Upgrade to MBA 13'' M5 24gb 512gb

I'm currently holding a good MBP 13'' I5 8gb 128gb from 2015. I have been using this lovely machine for 10 years for school work and only for the last 3 years it has been going down in efficiency due to software updates. Currently running OS Monterey. Though, I must admit that it has troubles running small AI tasks.

Now, I'm buying a MBA and I am looking so much forward to finish my university degree on a new laptop. Hopefully, it will last another 10 years.

Do you think, that they used to built MacBooks stronger in the old days?

What if moving stuff to the bin was game?

Hi all,

I made SpellBin a small silly mac utility app that let's you bin files using a cauldron

You can drop files into the cauldron and unlock achievements and new skins along the way as a bit of an idle game :)

It's a one time purchase, all future updates come with it. The only network calls it makes are licence key checks and app update checks. No analytics, crash reports or anything like that.

Would love to know what people think of it!

Met a dude selling it for 50k INR. Battery health is at 85% and cycle count is at 284.

New MacBook Pro M5 Pro Creaking/Popping issue

Hi everyone, I got a new MacBook Pro about 3 weeks ago. I had an M4 MacBook Air before this and never noticed any creaking or popping from the chassis.

A day or two after getting the Pro, I started occasionally hearing a small pop/creak when picking it up. I thought about returning it, but the whole exchange and data-transfer process was a huge hassle, so I kept it.

Sometimes it also makes a random pop when I’m not touching it, usually when it’s been under heavy load, which I assumed was thermal expansion.

Now I can recreate some of the creaking just by lightly pressing/resting my hand on the area around the trackpad/chassis, as shown in the video.

The laptop otherwise works perfectly and is only about 3 weeks old. Is this normal chassis behavior on the newer MacBook Pros, or would you have Apple look at it?

Requesting a MacBook build estimate from MacBook experts

I currently do video editing (using Adobe Premiere Pro) and am also working on a side project—developing a game in Visual Studio. I’m looking for a Mac that’s portable yet powerful enough to handle these tasks. I honestly don’t know anything about Macs, so could you please recommend a MacBook for me?
