My original setup vs my current setup
Back in 2006 leaving secondary school, my parents gave me some money for a college laptop. I found a one-year-old PowerBook being sold as "broken" for €300. It was still a lot of cash for a busted laptop back then, but I found out it belonged to a UCD professor who had dropped it, causing the screen to stop working.
As a budding IT student, I figured I’d risk €300 of the €400 my parents gave me to try and fix it, leaving the remaining €100 for drinks 😅. When I picked it up, it turned on and outputted perfectly to an external monitor. It was blazing fast for the time because it was a top-tier "school spec" machine. If you didn't know, Irish universities always got the highest spec computers because they didn't pay for them directly they were just requested through the college budget. To this day, I’m not totally sure about the legalities of him selling it to me, but it came loaded with a ton of expensive software I could never have afforded. Double win!
The second I got it home, I stripped it down to see what went wrong. Turns out, the display cable lock had just popped open and the cable was slightly loose. I clicked it back in, and boom the screen worked. So, in 2006, I ended up owning a €2,200 laptop for just €300 (minus a nasty dent on the side). To this day, it’s the best bargain I've ever found and I still own this machine and at most stripped to change the thermal paste a few times over the years but that’s it just kept chugging along.

Mac OS 8.6 boots from CD but freezes after a few minutes, HDD detected but won’t mount?
I recently got an original ibook clamshell and I’m trying really hard to get the little guy working again. I really want to use it for distraction free writing/note taking for college.
It is an M2453/EMC 1847, G3 300 MHz, with 160MB of RAM. It has the original 3gb IBM hard drive. It’s currently running the original Japanese Mac OS 8.6 Software install CD (I bought it from Japan.)
When i first got it, it would only boot to the flashing folder/question mark. I was given the original install discs so i tried booting from the software install CD by holding C. It does boot from the CD and gets to the mac os 8.6 desktop. At first the trackpad wasn’t working, but after doing the physical power management reset, it started working again.
The part thats confusing me is it will work normally for a couple seconds (and ONCE i got it to let me open some apps.) then it’ll completely freeze. Cursor wont move, nothing responds, sometimes the apps just disappear? It happens even if i don’t touch anything. The cursor and keyboard are confirmed working.
I checked Apple System Profiler while it was working and it sees the G3 300 MHz and all 160MB of RAM. I also checked the drives. The internal HDD is detected as an IBM 3 GB drive on ATA 2, but it says it’s not mounted.
I opened Disk First Aid from the CD and it can see Macintosh HD. I ran Verify and got an error about an “invalid/unexpected key”(4,156) and it said it found problems that it couldn’t repair. Then it froze again? 😭
I’ve also already tried just booting from the CD and leaving it completely alone without opening Macintosh HD and it still eventually freezes. I charged the battery up and tried again but it still froze. Sooo I’m wondering what you guys think; Does this sound like the hard drive is dying, or should I be looking at RAM/power/logic board first?
I’m thinking about replacing the original 3 GB HDD anyway because, well… it’s 27 years old. but I don’t want to start throwing parts and money at it if there’s a better way to diagnose this first. I also haven’t used the Restore CD or erased/initialized the drive because I don’t want to accidentally wipe anything before I know what’s going on.
i’ve been really wanting a clamshell for YEARS so i’m not willing to let this one die. Any advice would be VERY appreciated. I really wanna save this thing ☹️

Resurrecting my old 1st Gen Apple TV with my PowerBook G4 😁
I love how easy it is to transfer my physical library using iTunes. It’s like a big iPod moving my DVD and CD rips over Wi-Fi is a bit slow, but it gets the job done!
I’ve owned this 1st Gen Apple TV for years but never actually had the time to sit down and use it. I think I’m finally going to hook it up to my stereo system to put that local library to good use.
The 1st Gen Apple TV lives on! 😄

Spooky Mac Game AMBER Journey's Beyond Being Enjoyed 30 Years After Release
My wife and I don’t want our kids on the internet yet, so we got them a 2002 iMac G4 which they're allowed to use for creative pursuits and select games. The great thing about them not having the latest and greatest tech is seeing how much they can still appreciate the older things! Here they’re playing my original Mac CD copy of the wonderful 1996 spooky adventure game, AMBER: Journeys Beyond. I let them start it at the beginning of October, and they reached the ending about ten days later, without cheats or a guide, working on it together every evening in their room.
Paging u/fwimmer! The creative work you and Susan and your team crafted 30 years ago is still being enjoyed three decades later. :)

Getting a 2003 iBook online safely - advice?
Hi all,
I've got a beautiful 14" iBook G4 that I'd like to put to good use as a streaming internet radio for my rabbits to listen to when I'm not around. The iBook can see my router's networks, but it can't connect to them as it doesn't understand WPA as a protocol. I know I can get it to connect to my mobile phone's hotspot if I disable all encryption, but I am looking for a long-term solution.
I think what I may need is a wireless ethernet bridge, something that will connect to the mac via ethernet and then connect to the router itself, but if I don't need to spend the money and buy the gear, then that would be great. Thanks in advance!

£299 for HomeView? No chance.
Who needs to spend £299 on a HomeView, when I have an iMac G3 that can communicate with HomeKit via a Raspberry Pi running Home Assistant?
As it stands, it’s essentially a mouse controlled kiosk that currently can control one of my lights, and read one of my climate sensors. It works great!
Eventually i will add all my HomeKit devices, and even AirPlay controls for my speakers throughout the house.
I added a little screensaver summary that dims after 30 seconds, and switches the screen off entirely after 15 mins to reduce power/burn in, and I can add more summary info to it later.
Let me know what you think!

picking up a powermac G5 2.3 DP tomorrow, tiger or leopard?
i'm looking to mostly play old games and use old software from the OS X era. the only modern thing i'd need is a web browser, for downloading those games and apps. i mostly want tiger for its looks, but maybe classic mode could be useful too. i've heard leopard is laggy, but i'm not sure if it applies to only G4s or all PPC macs. this is my first PPC mac btw so tell me if there's anything else i should know.

New Macintosh SE!
Hey!
I got a Macintosh SE 1/20 without a mouse or Keyboard, so I Hope I get them in the Next days…
I opened it, and there was no dust in it.
I removed the battery to be on the safe side.
At first it did not boot, but after opening it now somehow boots immediately into MacOS.
I’m so happy when I have the periphery and can play around with it!
I’ve been a student at university since last week, so I don’t want to invest too much directly. That at least for the time being the internal hard drive is running is therefore great!
Does anyone have any tips? :)

PowerBook G3 disk help
I have a problem. I “accidentally”(don’t ask how) erased my PBG3’s OS 9 disk. And no ways that I found can recover the resource fork based things and Apps and system stuff. Is there a way to recover the system files and apps in general? Thanks a lot in advance!
My specs are:
CPU: 233 MHz G3 512K cache
GPU: ATI Rage LT Pro 2 MB VRAM
RAM: 160 MB
OS 9 Version: 9.2.2
HDD: Internal ATA 2 GB Toshiba Hard Disk(the original one, still holds up well!)
Disc Drive: CD-ROM 20x

Apple extended keyboard ii question
My father had an old AEKII in his attic at work and I found it and decided to have a hand at restoring it a couple of years ago. I removed all the keycaps and bleached all the stained plastic parts with hair dye in the sun, which came close to removing all the yellowing, but didn't fully get it.
After putting it all back together, I judged that it seemed to have gone well, but there are still some instances of keys that don't feel as good as other keys, the delete key "squeaks" for lack of a better word, on some actuations. The caps lock triggers before it's fully depressed (maybe that's how they all are?) and the spacebar never fully bleached back to the original color.
I am wondering if I should try lubricating the switches or if there are common maintenance items that people do for these old keyboards to keep the operational for as long as possible. Using a nearly 35 year old keyboard is a really cool experience but I don't want it to break due to the abuse of everyday use.
Thanks in advance for any tips or for pointing me to useful resources. I'm including a pic of my keyboard for reference.
