Macbook Air Found in Dumpster

When I was moving out of my old apartment, I grabbed some boxes from the dumpster. One of the boxes had a working MacBook inside. After trying to use it I realized why it was trashed, at first it seemed like the only way to use it is by logging into the account shown when turning it on. Now when I try turning it off then on again, it shows the guest login Info and won't allow me to use my own Apple ID. Is there a way to salvage it or is it a paper weight?

Deciding on whether I should wait for the base m6 MacBook Pro or buy this m5 pro MacBook Pro with 24gb ram

I am currently in need of a new MacBook. I am not sure on which one to buy. I was wondering if I should wait for the new m6 MacBook Pro with the base spec. Or if I should buy this great deal on Amazon. I suppose the m5 pro chip is better than the m6 chip. Another thing that is making me very interested in this deal is that it has 24gb ram. Many thanks to those who reply!

Which MacBook is most similar or better than the 2020 MacBook pro m1 model?

My 2020 M1 13 inch Macbook pro has broken and I realized it’s time for a new one. Can anyone give me any recommendations to one similar or better than it? Also, are there any with the touchbar? I heard apple removed it in the newer models. I want one thats good for games and school, but I don’t know which is the best option for that.

Region of the record for Speedometer 3.1 on M5 base machine

Post image

I've been doing these benchmark since the beginning of this month. After trying to apply the best test environment, I've reached this result so far. There is one last thing left to try. My main purpose is trying to reach the Speedometer 3.1 score of M6 on Safari browser -which is around 77 I guess- at least.

My mac is a 14inch MacBookPro M5 base model. It has 16gb ram and 512gb ssd.

It would be great if you guys do the benchmark and share. Do not forget to do it two times. After you do it second time, do not expect beating that score with a more than 10% raise. Even if you provide 50 condition perfectly at the same time, I don't believe that it is not possible with your effort anymore. After you reach the record points region of your machine, browser and/or operating system must be improved or optimized more I guess.

This test is mainly showing the resultative-composite performance of your browser and the single core performance.

Am I cooked or just stupid ?

So, I just bought a MacBook Pro 15-inch (I think from 2012, but I'm not sure) for €10 at a used market. The seller told me he didn't know if it worked or not. For €10, I decided to take the risk—at most, I can sell the working spare parts and get back more than 10 bucks.
When I took it home and opened it up, there was neither a battery nor an HDD inside, but at least the 4 GB of RAM were there. I put in my own HDD, and using the included 60W charger (I know it requires an 85W one, but I don't have it), I managed to turn it on by using an SMC bypass key combination I found online.
At first, I saw green dots in the black areas of the screen and almost resigned myself to a dead GPU. However, when it boots into the Internet Recovery section with the white screen, the display is absolutely perfect—not even a single pixel out of place!
The problem is, as soon as the Internet Recovery loading bar reaches 100%, the MacBook completely shuts down and restarts. Is this the charger's fault? Is it a motherboard issue? Or am I just an idiot and it simply refuses to work properly without a battery?
(Sorry for bad English)

Every Apple M chip on one calm page: I got tired of endless benchmark tables and made my own

Post image
124 Upvotes

Every time I wanted to compare M-series chips, I ended up scrolling through pages of near-identical rows: the same chip in six Macs, three binned versions, MacBook Air scores next to Mac Studio scores, all under ads. Finding out "is an M5 Pro actually faster than an M4 Max?" took way longer than it should.

So I made the page I wanted:

  • One row per chip. By default each chip shows once, in its base configuration (20 chips, M1 to M6). There's a toggle if you want the higher-core versions too (29 total).
  • Each chip scored in the Mac that cools it best, so throttling doesn't make a chip look worse than it is. Tbh, cooling does not make big jumps across benchmarks.
  • Two bars per row: CPU multi-core and GPU (Metal), both from Geekbench 7. Sort by either one.
  • Calm to look at. Warm colours, light and dark mode, no ads, no pop-ups, no sign-up.
  • Five languages: English, Turkish, Spanish, Hindi, Chinese.

A couple of things it made obvious right away: the 15-core M5 Pro now beats the 24-core M2 Ultra on CPU, and an old M2 Max still out-draws a new M5 Pro on GPU. Also M6 base is now toe to toe with M1 Ultra on CPU.

Disclosure: I made it, it's on my personal site: onurilgaz.dev/m-tier-list

$1,800 MBP M5 (16GB) vs. $3,000 MBP M5 Pro (24GB): Is the upgrade worth it?

Hello family. I’m looking for a MacBook so I can work away from home, and I’m torn between these two options. In my country, the prices are:

  • M5 with 16GB RAM — $1,800
  • M5 Pro with 24GB RAM — $3,000

I currently use a Mac mini M4 Pro with 24GB RAM, and it handles my workflow really well. My typical workload includes:

  • 10+ Safari tabs open
  • Photo editing, video editing, and vector work (Photoshop, illustrator, Premier pro)
  • Architectural and structural 3D modeling and rendering (Cinema 4D)
  • ChatGPT Astra and Claude Opus

The MacBook would complement my Mac mini and give me the flexibility to work outside the house.

My main question is whether the M5 Pro is worth the extra $1,200 for this kind of workload. Would the base M5 with 16GB be comfortable enough, or would I feel a noticeable step down from my current setup when multitasking?

I’d love to hear from anyone using either configuration for similar work. Would you save the money or pay more for the Pro?

MacBook Air M1 is 1.5 years old, battery health at 85% with 385 cycles — is this normal?

Hey so,!

I have a MacBook Air M1 that's nearly 1.5 years old, and I've noticed that my battery health has dropped to 85% with a cycle count of 385.

Here are all the details:

- Model: MacBook Air M1

- Age: Nearly 1.5 years

- Battery health: 85%

- Cycle count: 385

I'm a little concerned because losing 15% of battery capacity in around 18 months seems like quite a lot to me, especially considering that I've only reached 385 cycles out of the 1,000 cycles Apple mentions for its battery design benchmark.

I'd really appreciate it if you guys could help me understand a few things:

  1. Is 85% battery health after 1.5 years and 385 cycles normal for the M1 Air, or is my battery degrading faster than it should?

  2. What battery health percentage did you have on your M1 Air after a similar amount of time and a similar cycle count?

  3. What factors could cause battery health to drop this much, even with a relatively low cycle count?

  4. Does battery health usually decline gradually, or can it suddenly drop by several percentage points?

  5. Are there any settings or charging habits I should change to slow down further degradation?

  6. At what battery health percentage should I actually consider replacing the battery?

  7. Is there any chance this indicates a defective battery, and should I get it checked by Apple while I still can?

I'm not looking to replace the battery unnecessarily, but I also don't want to ignore a potential problem if the degradation is abnormal.

Please share your experience with your M1 MacBook Air, especially if you've had it for around 1–2 years. I'd like to know your battery health and cycle count so I can compare mine

My Neo makes me want a Pro. (Review from a windows/Android user)

Post image
99 Upvotes

The Macbook Neo was my first ever Apple purchase and my first laptop in over 10 years. I am a windows user as I am a PC gamer and I have been using Androids basically my whole life. I started school back in August of 2025 and at first it was fine doing all the work I needed to on my main PC but I just wanted the portability the laptop provides. Also got it before the price increase and I got my student discount!

I use my Neo for schoolwork, light coding, Youtube/Twitch viewing, and even tried some light gaming. The 8gb of ram hasn't been an issue at all. Sure I'd like 16 or 32 but for what I needed back when I bought the neo 8 is enough.

When it comes to adjusting to the Apple world... It did take a minute to learn the keyboard shortcuts and I still sometimes try and do windows+shift+S for screenshot which ofc does not work on the mac.

Now android world. I do not plan on switching to Iphone as I love the Android ecosystem but If you are also an Android user and questioning if you should get a mac just hear this. There are plenty of apps to make up for the lack of "apple magic" stuff like KDE connect has been a lifesaver and so cool to mess around with software I otherwise would have no reason to use.

Overall I am very happy with my purchase and hope to get at least a few years out of this boy before I get a pro one day.

Is it over?

My Air M3's battery health was around 80% a few months ago, but it has deteriorated rapidly since then. A few days ago when it reached 29% capacity, it stopped charging and became stuck at 1%.

Since then, I've had to keep it plugged in constantly because it shuts down almost immediately when disconnected. Performance has also deteriorated significantly. Even relatively simple tasks can lag and multitasking has become noticeably worse. It's essentially a desktop now.

What's confusing is that macos recognizes the power adapter, but system info reports that the battery isn't charging.

I also got a repair quote of around 400 usd for a battery replacement because the entire chassis would apparently need to be replaced as well. I'm not gonna spend that much on a mac with 8 Gigs of ram, so I'm probably going to upgrade soon.

When I do upgrade, should I get the Mac Pro M5 w 32 Gigs of ram or an M5 Pro Mac Pro with 24 Gigs of ram? I'm also open to other suggestions.

Has anyone experienced anything similar? And did replacing the battery resolve both the charging and performance issues?

New MacBook Pro M5 Pro Creaking/Popping issue

Hi everyone, I got a new MacBook Pro about 3 weeks ago. I had an M4 MacBook Air before this and never noticed any creaking or popping from the chassis.

A day or two after getting the Pro, I started occasionally hearing a small pop/creak when picking it up. I thought about returning it, but the whole exchange and data-transfer process was a huge hassle, so I kept it.

Sometimes it also makes a random pop when I’m not touching it, usually when it’s been under heavy load, which I assumed was thermal expansion.

Now I can recreate some of the creaking just by lightly pressing/resting my hand on the area around the trackpad/chassis, as shown in the video.

The laptop otherwise works perfectly and is only about 3 weeks old. Is this normal chassis behavior on the newer MacBook Pros, or would you have Apple look at it?

MacBook Pro M5 Pro – 64GB RAM / 2TB SSD for App Development?

I’m considering purchasing a 14-inch MacBook Pro M5 Pro (18-core CPU, 20-core GPU, 64GB RAM, 2TB SSD) through Apple’s Education Store for approximately £4,178. It’ll be my first Mac and my main personal computer, primarily for developing an iOS/cross-platform mobile app using Xcode, SwiftUI, VS Code, Figma, simulators and backend tools, with my iPhone 12 Pro for physical device testing. I’m hoping to keep it for at least 5–7 years. Would this configuration be sensible for running multiple development tools simultaneously, or am I overspending on RAM and storage? Also, with rumours of new MacBooks coming soon, would you buy now or wait? Interested to hear from developers using similar setups.

M5 Air, 24gb, 1TB… good for 4 years?

Hi all, I’ve just purchased the above in light blue, and perhaps should have asked this question sooner! (Still time to cancel the order, but I’m super excited!)

I know this spec is overkill for simple short video editing, and Excel-based work (and Metatrader for occasional derivatives trading), but I’m more interested in having a future-proof laptop, this is key for me as it’s expensive (to me anyway)

16GB appears to be the new normal now after plenty of reading online, and I could have gone for that, but no doubt it will be 24gb in the next 18-24 months. I just want your thoughts. Is this upgrade above the base smart, or totally stupid.

Appreciate my profile will raise eyebrows amongst some. Yes, I take photos of myself in tights as it’s apparently popular! Here for MacBook advice only please. 🙏

Has anyone else been experiencing this weird issue

Post image
2 Upvotes

So today my MacBook’s keyboard has been randomly acting up. The function keys and some commands on the keyboard keep randomly activating non-stop (mainly the F10 key/mute key). I’ve restarted it like three times and the issue kept coming back. At first I thought my keyboard had failed again until I turned off my Bluetooth and the issue just went away. Later on I decided to test it again, so I turned my Bluetooth back on and a few minutes later the issue came back (F10 key annoyingly kept spamming). Either it’s a weird macOS glitch or my Mac is picking up some signal that’s causing it to freak the fuck out; nothing is even connected i checked multiple times. Anyways, until I find out what’s causing it I’m leaving Bluetooth off

Can someone guide how to get rid of Simulator support as I no longer need it?

The Delete button always remains greyed out.

I asked ChatGPT what to do and it suggested this-

sudo rm -rf "/Library/Developer/CoreSimulator/Caches/dyld/26A434"

I'm not sure if this is the right thing to do, so asking for your opinion.

Should I sell my MacBook Air power adapter?

Post image
5 Upvotes

I got this Macbook Air m4 last year, it came with a Apple power adapter 35w double usb c ports, but before I getting this Macbook, I had these two Anker power adapters (140w) 4 ports and 160w 3 ports. The Apple power adapter is vert slow, not travel friendly and I barely uses. My question is if I should sell? Here in Europe I believe I can sell for 30 euros on Vinted. But I'm afraid when I go to sell the Macbook one day it can decrease a lot the value (more than 30 euros). Main reason I'm thiking this is because I'm planning to move countries next year, and briging extra things that I don't use is not ideal.

Mac Mini + Base iPad OR Macbook Air?

So, I bought an M1 Air in 2021, and while I used it vanilla for 4 years, I bought a 24' monitor last year and can't go back to using a laptop as is now.

I don't use a mouse and keyboard but the Air instead, since there's nothing else like its trackpad.

However, I plan to replace my Air this year, and I was wondering if I should get a mini instead. I always loved the mini and wanted to get one. I really like how less space it takes up, and it's absolutely the best mini PC out there.

That said, since I'd also like a device 'on the move', I thought I could get a base iPad with the money I save. That's because I do the bare minimum on my Air anyway (I have a seperate work laptop).

Of course, the alternative is getting the new Air instead.

What do you guys think are the pros and cons of each setup?

My needs are:

- Browsing (Lots of newsletters, articles I print and read)

- YouTube, movies, sports etc

- Other super general purpose work

I've thought about JUST getting an iPad (the Air perhaps), but I'm not sure about daily-ing iPadOS.

Which Macbook for Claude + higgsfield ? Budget 900-1000€

1:Macbook Pro M1 , 16 Gb RAM , 256 Gb storage
2:Macbook Air M2 , 16 Gb RAM , 256 Gb storage
3:Macbook Air M1 , 16 Gb RAM , 512 Gb storage

It’s all refurbished, but I don’t know if it’s worth buying a newer one like the Air M2 or the older one with more storage.
