I was a scaredy cat about horror until I decided to try RE. Resident Evil 7 was my first dip into the survival horror franchise, and it felt like discovering a whole new world. Everything about it was amazing, the gunplay, atmosphere, Ethan himself, the claustrophobic environment and power progression, all of it. The scariness only made it feel just that more cathartic to boomstick things down. Went straight to RE8 after that.
Thing is, nothing has really ever matched that kind of ultra specific spark I felt with RE7. I don't really like it when I play as a soldier or special operative, I want to play as an ordinary person, an everyman. There also should be some kind of combat too so it's not just helpless hiding.
The games I've searched for either have the ordinary protagonist, great environment, but no combat (Alien Isolation, Outlast, Amnesia), are third person (the other RE games), or lack the polish or have a trained protagonist (Crisol, similar indie games). I'm midway through Dead Space, cleared RE2R and got Silent Hill 2 Remake, and they're all amazing, great games, but they don't scratch the itch.
It's not like I dislike third person, I just enjoy first person more to get up and close with the horror.
In short:
- Like Ethan Winters or Miles Upshur, ordinary everyman protagonist, not a badass or special operative
- Focus on gunplay and combat, visceral and impactful
- Large scale boss fights
- Survival/action horror tense atmosphere
- Preferably first person
- Similar atmosphere to RE7 and Outlast, although not required
Are there any survival horror games that match these requirements that flew under my radar? Thanks.
