AMA [AMA] Developer of T.W.I.R.L. here, a psychological horror game about identity, self-worth, and growing up in 2006. We just launched today on Steam. Ask me anything!

Hi r/Horrorgaming!

I'm Ben, the creative director of Genie Boy Games. Today, we're launching T.W.I.R.L. on Steam!

T.W.I.R.L. is a first person psychological horror game from the perspective of a 9-year-old boy in 2006 waking up in the middle of the night from a dream where some "thing" - maybe a demon - commanded him to get out of bed, go into the room down the hall, and "T.W.I.R.L." - whatever that means.

What proceeds is a series of loops where something evil draws us through this routine, changing us and the environment upon every loop, unveiling the life story of a boy who grows up maintaining a deep, dark, and potentially sinister secret.

The game takes inspiration from movies and games like I SAW THE TV GLOW, SKINAMARINK, GONE HOME, and of course, P.T.

It was made as part of a David Lynch-themed game jam for the Haunted PS1 Community, and was published under their new "Haunted Publishing Syndicate" brand!

This is our studio's first game, and we are excited to finally share this story. The journey of sharing of our game, and talking about the themes and meanings within the story has been emotionally challenging, but tremendously fulfilling. Let us be the first to admit - this is an odd story to debut with. And it's something we get reminded of especially when trying to explain it to people without giving anything away.

We hope that T.W.I.R.L. inspires players with a feeling of reassurance, hope, and a better understanding of self.

Game-related questions are optional, but encouraged.

Here's a free code to redeem the game! 84658-6LY40-J8TAJ

Considering the success of Hellraiser, would you want an Undying/Jericho remake?

For me, Clive Barker's Hellraiser is game of the year. We've had a good share of quality games this year but goddamn what an adventure this was.

I'm a big fan of Clive Barker and his first 2 games, especially Undying which I believe it was a solid 9/10 for its time.

Would you like a remake of Undying or Jericho? Or a new game based on one of his books?

Signalis not for me

I really really tried with Signalis, honestly I did.

I got past the first boss and just acquired the flashlight but I don’t think I can do anymore.

I know people love the art style etc but it just isn’t for me. Maybe I’m just in need of a break on the back of Silver Pines and Townfall but I just can’t carry on with this one.

What am I missing? Anybody else that feels this way about this one?

Every room has enemies that you need to dodge or kill and it’s just chaos room to room. There doesn’t seem to be a lot of calm in between to work things out. Maybe it’s just me and I expect the hate from this post, but I really did try to like it.

As a bit of extra info, I’m a survival horror player since the 90s started with RE2 and Silent Hill and been playing them ever since.

DISCUSSION What’s your guys least favourite resident evil enemy’s?

So I’ve been replaying resident evil 7 recently and the games great… besides the molded, IMO there boring bullet sponges that and bland to look at and are so much worse then any other base resident evil enemy (ivy, zombies, licans, lickers). But that got me interested, what are your guys least favourite resident evil enemy (not including bosses)?, and is my criticism valid or not? Thanks!

Looking for horror games from the last few years with puzzles but little to no combat (PS4/PS5/Switch/Xbox)

Hey all! I’m looking for horror game recommendations for my dad. He’s been gaming for years and still loves horror games, but he no longer has the reflexes to really master combat, so it tends to get frustrating for him. Puzzles and exploration are what he enjoys most.

Ideally games released in roughly the last 5 years but not a must. Playable on PS4, PS5, Switch or Xbox. The less combat the better; to some extend hiding or running away is ok.

Any hidden gems or favorites you’d recommend? Thanks in advance!

CONSOLE Im looking for some good ps5 and ps4 horror game recommendations

Ive recently found an itch to play a ton of horror games, especially considering Halloween is right around the corner, im looking for recommendations of all types, also looking for lesser known titles that aren't exactly triple A, more so on the side of games like still wakes the deep, puppet combo styled games, and happy humbles burger farm. (Like said all recommendations is welcomed too)

CONSOLE Cronos or Fatal Frame 2 Remake? SH2R fan who bounced off Dead Space

Both are on sale and I can only grab one right now.

Context:
Silent Hill 2 Remake is one of my favorite games but Silent Hill f didn't do it for me.
Dropped the Dead Space remake halfway through for SH2R. Great game, just not my thing.
I actually like over-the-shoulder action, but the psychological side and moody atmosphere matters more.
Not a fan of punishing difficulty or heavy resource scarcity.
Big on puzzles, and SH2R's were a highlight for me

Where I'm at:
Played the FF2 demo and really liked it. Was going to go for it until learning that Cronos got the new easy mode (Temporal Diver) that halves enemy health, which probably does wonders for resource management, and it comes from the same devs as SH2R.

Thoughts?

PC Any games that doesn't rely on jump scares to be scary?

I like the feeling I'm being watched or I'm fully immersed over the fact that I'm in a scary setting that can creep me out I just don't like the looming feeling that if I walk to a room in the level a ghost will pop up on your face and play a loud noise or something like that's not scary that's just frustrating and weak.

PC Does anyone know if Demonologist goes on sale soon?

Hey everyone,

I really want to get into Demonologist because the ghost hunting and the gameplay with the demons throwing stuff at you looks so peak, but the full price is just a bit too expensive for me right now.

I live on a farm out in Denmark and don't have a lot of money to spend on games at the moment, so it's out of my budget and I really need to wait for a discount.

Since it's October, does anyone know if the developers usually put the game on sale for the Steam Halloween event, or how often it usually gets a discount? Would love to join the hunts as soon as the price drops a bit!

Thanks!

DISCUSSION Tormented Souls is as gooffy as it is atmospheric, really enjoying it so far!

I don't know what I was expecting from Tormented Souls, but I wasn't expecting...whatever the first half hour throws in your face.

Mild spoilers for the early game

I find the game to be surprisingly gooffy in terms of writing, voice acting (not bad, but like weirdly upbeat in terms of delivery), and scene choices: like the Saw adjacent naked wake up scene in the bath, the stealth eye gouging. All that while playing it very very straight and self serious.

The twin thing, and the obsession with heart surgery is incredibly re-inforced; like you know that rule of three in cinema, where you present an idea, then remind it to the audience later, then you pay it off. Well here, it's like the reminding phase is all the time! Twins everywhere in photos, in documents, and I'm like 3hrs in.

And, sidenote, the hospital name sounds like "Wild Burger", which makes it feel like the game takes place in restaurant chain. The names of places for that matter are top non-American people inventing North American places: the post card Caroline receives is hilarious in that regard. I'm French btw, so for me to remark on that means makes me feel like it's very on the nose.

And at the same time...

They went ALL IN on the architecture, the level design: marble statues everytwhere, walls covered with frames and spiraling wooden columns, wall lamps shaped like hands: it's gaudy as fuck, I love it! And the navigation through the different levels feels great. And the mystery is still enticing, despite it being somewhat poorly enunciated.

The music is pitch perfect. It's like perfect stressful tracks, perfect whatever genre RE2's main hall and save rooms music was.

Gameplay wise, I haven't seen much, or at least I'm not yet in the thick of it I think. Combat is okay, really like the dodge option and crowbar to finish enemies off. And the puzzles are surprisingly intricate for a survival horror game. Which as a puzzler and point&click fan is greatly appreciated.

I think that's one I might end up really loving overall.

REVIEW Signalis: A Great Indie Journey into Psychological Horror

Post image
101 Upvotes

Going into Signalis, I wasn’t sure what to expect. The game definitely appealed to me as an indie horror game with low poly, PS1-era 3-D graphics that was clearly heavily inspired by survival horror heavyweights like Resident Evil and Silent Hill. However, what I didn’t expect from it was that it would carve out its own identity further than its inspirational sources. At the end of the day, it was a very enjoyable game from a small studio that I could easily recommend to any horror fan willing to try something familiar yet new.

As I described, the game is very much inspired by both Silent Hill and Resident Evil, but I feel like it takes a pretty nice middle ground between the two. Early Resident Evil titles’ influence is apparent in the tense survival elements, very limited inventory, safe rooms, enemies that can corner you if not approached correctly, and the constant need to make sure corpses won’t rise to cause you more trouble. Silent Hill’s influences are mainly in its story and atmosphere, which is psychological, cryptic, and provides revelations as you collect more information about the characters and world around you. As a side note, without getting into spoilers, I think the story and lore, although pretty complex and confusing at times, is very well told, emotional, and artistically surreal.

I think the area I like the most about this game is the art. I have heard some gamers groan about the overabundance of low poly indie games, claiming that this style utilized by indie developers as a way to mask a lack of graphical prowess rather than supplement a game’s art. Whatever your feelings are about low poly graphics, I believe that this game absolutely nails its style and art. At times, Signalis feels more like a surreal and complex psychological anime akin to Neon Genesis Evangelion rather than a PS1-style video game. The camera will shift from 3rd-person to 1st-person in fun ways sometimes, allowing you to solve puzzles from new perspectives and traverse certain areas with a different moody feeling. As a huge psychological horror fan, I loved the cryptic flashbacks on the screen, the random languages that would pop in, different art styles in the cutscenes, and the constant thought of, “what the hell did I just see?” It’s great!

The puzzles are also quite fun and surprisingly well thought out. As a survival horror game, you expect puzzles and backtracking, but most of the time, I didn’t feel like the game was wasting my time. However, you can only carry six items, so I did groan sometimes when I finally found the item I was looking for, but some ammo I picked up 2 minutes beforehand took up my last slot and cost me another trip to the old safe room. Occasionally, you’d hit an obtuse puzzle that could take some time to figure out, but overall, they are interesting and creative.
I think my biggest issue with this game is the sometimes shoddy combat. Most of the time, it’s just fine. It does the job and I can dispatch enemies that annoyingly stand right in front of the door I’m trying to get to. However, it’s when facing multiple enemies at a time that the combat falls apart. The aiming could be a little clunky and mapping the “push away” command to the “shoot” command was a strange choice from the developers that got me killed a few times when I got cornered. That, and the fact that the player character would aim for everything EXCEPT what I was trying to hit when I was in a pinch. However, this was not a huge deal at the end since combat isn’t a huge focus.

Overall, I’d give Signalis a very high recommendation to every survival horror fan, especially if you like anything psychological and artsy. It’s well worth your time and I believe that this small development team have made an awesome project that surpassed my expectations.

8/10
