Positivity “ sid ! i want to start harm reduction , but i don’t know how ! “ i’ve gotchu !

tw : mentions of self harm in detail // i.e. depth , severity , etc , but no words used other than that !

harm reduction 101 ! ! !

( warning : i’m not a medical professional , this is all personal experience from someone [ me ] who’s gone through dbt , cbt , and residential therapy ! )

  1. remember that sobriety is a journey . harm reduction has the end goal of being clean , but sometimes that is not realistic . what is most important in the scenarios where you do self harm is to try and be as “ safe “ as possible .

  2. have somebody you can contact ! a trusted friend / adult , or someone who can help you get medical treatment if necessary .
use sterile supplies ! this might mean cleaning the area / surrounding area of where you are planning to self harm , cleaning the setting in which you’re doing it in , not sharing sharps , and making sure there is no dirt or rust on what you are using .
start slow ! while relapsing / self harming can be a very impulsive thing , the goal here is to be as safe as possible while engaging in harmful behaviors . this can include lessening the frequency , depth , or changing the area that the self harm is occurring .

  3. if you do not have somebody you feel safe /
comfortable contacting , be sure to have as much control as possible , making sure that you can provide care to yourself afterwards .
have medical supplies on hand , at the ready . depending on the “ severity “ this may even include a tourniquet . whether incidental or not , there is always a chance for an injury that is more severe than you can handle . have sterile medical supplies , including but not limited to : gauze , neosporin , an anti-bacterial spray specifically for wounds , bandages , and over the counter painkillers to take afterwards . just because you were hurting in the moment doesn’t mean you don’t deserve comfort .
try and delay self harm by developing awareness of your triggers . if this is social media , certain shows / movies , stressful situations , all of those things are nothing to be ashamed of .

  4. keep self harming tools in an awkward to reach space or an area that would take you a while to reach . this could include a sharps box with a lock that is a code , in a box with multiple layers of cardboard , or somewhere up high .

  5. if comfortable , log the relapse / urge . over time , try to note what you think caused it , going through something called a “ chain “ . what vulnerabilities did you have ? was this planned or impulsive ? what do you think was the main catalyst ? how did you feel before vs after ? over time it gets easier to recognize your feelings and be comfortable expressing them either to yourself or others .

a supply kit for aftercare or distraction :

- sanitation objects ; alcohol wipes , hand sanitizer , moist towelettes .
comfort food / drink : a snack , a soda , a coffee , or a comforting meal .

- items to self soothe : a stuffed animal , a fluffy blanket , calming music , essential oils or a candle scent you like , books , movies .

- a safe environment : put the object(s) used to self harm in a different room , ideally in a locked box with the key in a different room as well .

- medical supplies : see earlier ! :)

- comfortable temperature(s) : air conditioning , a fan , a warm blanket , closed blinds , a fire place .

reminders :

• recovery is not linear . it looks the same to nobody , everybody is human and their experiences differ wildly , but that doesn’t mean a single one is invalid . you may feel that you get worse before you get better , but the goal is to push through .
• there are people who care about you . strangers on the internet , pets , the animals in your neighborhood that see you walk by , the barista at your favorite coffee place , friends online , friends in person , complete strangers .
• there is always a way to feel joy after feeling terror or pain . you shouldn’t feel guilty for finding small things to bring you happiness . if you start feeling guilty , remember that sid on reddit dot com knows you are awesome !
• there is no wrong way to express your emotions . this doesn’t mean there aren’t harmful ways to express your emotions , this means that however you do is valid . whether you scream , cry , isolate , depend on people , yell , argue , bottle it up , they are all allowed . you are allowed to feel .
• find small things you like . you don’t have to love them , or do them constantly ! petting an animal , going to a cat cafe or animal shelter , taking a walk in the afternoon , laying in the sun in your backyard , taking a nap , taking a day off from work / school to purely rest , going grocery shopping and only buying your favorite foods , going to an ice cream parlor and getting a waffle cone , going to a new cafe and trying something new , stretch in the morning at sunrise or at dawn , watch the clouds move on by , listen to the sound of rain whether artificial or not , find joy in something small , no matter how minuscule .

AND REMEMBER ! YOU DESERVE HEALING !

it doesn’t matter if you’ve hurt others , betrayed yourself , or made mistakes .

you deserve to be comfortable in your own skin ! <3

Positivity Guide for after care and cutting.

Hi! as people rather do not care about safety , ill gladly help people with after care on cuts and wounds , this guide can be used on any wound.
any questions will be answered , please just comment.

CUTS AND HOW TO CLEAN THEM.

  1. cat-scratches (aka, epidermis)

• epidermis cuts can be identified by a scratch looking cut, it closely resembles a ‘cat scratch’, hence the name. epidermis infection levels are low.

• to tend to a epidermis cut, you can wash it with warm water, and let it heal.

  1. styros (aka, dermis)

• dermis cuts can be identified by the white layer that shows up before blood starts filling the cut. regular styros are not too prone to infection, but it can happen.

• to care for a dermis cut, you can dampen a towel with warm water, and lightly pat at the cut. afterwards, apply antibiotic ointment (ex; neosporin, aquaphor, vaseline) around the cut and put bandaid ontop.

  1. beans (aka, fat/hypodermis)

• bean cuts can be identified by yellow/orangey bubbles inside the cut. bean cuts, if not well taken care of, are very prone to an infection.

• to clean and confirm your cut wont get infected, clean out with water, (NOT with a papertowel or napkin.) apply ointment AROUND cut, and cover with bandage so debris cant get inside.

  1. laffy taffy (aka, muscle)

• muscle cuts are at a very high risk for an infection, and absolutely require stitches. please let a medical worker know and have them assist your cut. and infection at this level could be deathly.

• to care for laffy taffy at home, seal shut with steri strips/make steri strips to close the wound as best as possible. medical attention is highly recommended

.5. bone: “bedrock”a wound that exposes bone is an extremely serious injury. if you can see bone or suspect the injury has reached it, seek emergency medical care immediately.these injuries carry a very high risk of infection, significant blood loss, and damage surrounding muscles, tendons, nerves and blood vessels.while waiting for medical help, cover the wound with a clean dressing if available and avoid putting pressure directly on any exposed bone. do not peek !!! you cannot heal this injury by yourself. please, for the love of god, call an ambulance and stop reading shedtwt threads or reddit posts about it.

  1. bruises

bruises happen when small blood vessels beneath the skin are damaged, causing blood to collect under the surface. apply a cold pack or ice wrapped in a cloth for 10–20 minutes at a time during the first 24 hours to help reduce the pain or swelling.

avoid placing ice directly on your skin, as this can cause a cold injury or frostbite.

after the first couple of days, switching to a warm compress or heat pack may help improve blood flow and support the healing process.

  1. burns

for minor burns, cool the area under cool running water for 20 minutes as soon as possible. avoid using ice, butter, toothpaste, or other home remedies, as these can make the injury worse. once the burn has been cooled, cover it with a clean, non-stick dressing or plastic wrap to protect it.

call emergency services immediately if the burn:

was caused by chemicals or electricity.

affects the face, major joints or airways.

is deep, charred, white, leathery, or otherwise appears to be a full-thickness (third degree) burn.

is very large or if the person is having trouble breathing.

INFECTION INFO
“what causes infections? how can i identify and tend to infections?”

**CAUSES*\*

infections can occur by not taking proper care of the wound, not changing bandages, or getting something inside.

**IDENTIFYING*\*

identifying infections in the early stage can be easy, you can spot infections by yellow/green pus near the area, or if the cut is a fleshy glossy pink in the cut. you can feel the infection by it being hot to the touch, or swelling around the area.

**GETTING RID OF*\*

change out bandages within 12–24 hours. apply ointment *AROUND* cut, and cover with bandage to ensure no debris gets inside.

SUPPLIES
“where can i buy medical supplies?”

any drugstore, pharmacy, or Walmart

FOR THE LOVE OF GOD!! PLEASE STAY SAFE.

This is what 16 years of cutting can look like, and that’s not including my legs. I am always on high alert whenever I go out in short sleeves, whether it’s people’s looks or more scarily is the possibility of being harassed by people who don’t understand.

It’s tough out here folks! Sending love to you all 🫶🏻

Get a jug of skin-safe liquid latex, spread it out thin onto a large flat surface, and roll it into a big ball. You can cut this ball in half and cut the latex. It’s EXACTLY like skin, cheap, and lasts forever. Hopefully it distracts you long enough or makes you feel better so the urge leaves :)

Also doing thick sfx makeup(latex+tissue 8+ layers) and cutting that. You could put fake blood in between layers. I’m not sure if this is would promote your brain to do it more or what?? But if nothing else works why not try it.

Advice needed white cut Spoiler

my dad was yelling at me in the car and threatening to hurt me the whole time but the only thing on my mind was sh and killing myself to prove a point. when i got home i immediately went to my bedroom and i usually do cat scratches but i was pushing really deep while recklessly dragging and accidentally pulled my skin and saw white. ive seen heaps of serious posts about people and white cuts and i'm so scared because i don't want scars on my arm. i always wish scars could stay but it's a lie i don't want this to scar and i have no idea what to do and i kept wiping it with a tissue but it kept bleeding and will it scar, what do i do, do i need stitches or special bandages like its never gone this far for me i wish i did it on my thigh because at least people can't see it. idk why i even did this like its just to get my dad to feel bad for me but he doesn't even know i did this so there was no point and im so mad that i did it on my arm and even did this like bro

Advice needed What to use instead of toilet paper/tissues?

I've heard you shouldn't use toilet paper or tissues for fresh cuts I'm assuming because it can get stuck to the dried blood, what else can you use? Preferably household items.. I can't use gauze.

Edit: I mean for when there's too many in one area for a bandaid sorry I forgot to clarify

Advice needed I don't really know why I do it

So, I'm using this as a throw-away account, but I guess I just wanted to talk about this. I just turned 18 and the first time I self-harmed was when I was 15, though it was only a few times (cutting and burning) and I pretty much stopped immediately, so it never became a particularly big problem. However, at the end of the last school year (Year 12), I started cutting; I'm not sure exactly why, but I think it stemmed largely from stress and a deep sense of self-hatred after I messed up in a friendship and thus lost one of my closest friends and I just generally feel like I barely have any friends left. Anyway, I stopped over the summer because I was at my grandparents' house and couldn't really self-harm or hide it properly whilst I was there (staying clean was honestly a massive struggle) and I pretty much started again as soon as I got back to my parents' house.

The thing is, I feel like up to a few weeks ago I was still genuinely struggling, to the point where the notion of having to do my schoolwork and essays did make me feel like I would rather die and led to self-harm a few times, but I don't know why I'm doing so right now. I have coursework which is overdue and I just mentally cannot get myself to do it, but I'm mentally not doing badly, yet my brain is still viewing self-harm as being somewhere between a punishment and a source of motivation (like, if I cut myself then I'll be able to get work done or it means that it's okay if I haven't done it because it's kind of 'valid') and I don't really know what's going on in my brain.

And there's a part of me that just wants to get worse, but I also physically can't cut myself deeper and I don't really know what to do, but there's a part of me that only feels valid and as though it's okay that I'm not being productive if the cuts actually start bleeding again, if that makes sense. I don't know, I guess I was just wondering if anyone else is going through the same kind of thing. My arm has stopped bleeding as much as it used to and it's making me feel worse about myself and it's also making it harder for me to get work done. Sorry, I guess I mainly just wanted to rant because I feel like there's nobody that I can talk to about this in my real life.

Question Gauze substitutions and aftercare NSFW

I have severe OCD causing significantly high numbers of self harm, usually styros. I don't know how to care for them. I have no gauze that I can take without parents noticing and even if I could it would maybe cover like 1/8th or something. I've been applying cream and putting paper towels on top (the area cut is the size of a piece of paper towel) then adding a compression bandage around it. It's been 24 hours an has finally stopped bleeding but is uncovered. I don't know what to use to cover it, I'm worried about infection as it's such a big area.

Can anyone suggest other things I could use or how to deal with it safely?/is it fine to be uncovered now? The paper towel has been sticking and it really hurts.

Advice needed Hypodermis (beans) cut only take 2 weeks to heal completely? NSFW

Hii, umm I wanted to ask if your bean cuts (mine was 3cm long and 1cm wide) also heal in 2 weeks AND don't scab at all? I didn't use steri stripes or got stitches.

For me the cut looked like Day 1 the WHOLE 2 weeks and suddenly on day 12 there was new skin🤔

And it's new skin for real cuz it feels like my other scars, it's just still very thin.

For aftercare I use hydrogel, I know it's not common to use it for sh wounds but yea it worked out pretty well for me ig...

...thank u all for answers🙌🏻

Advice needed relapsed.

I (19F) have been dealing with a lot of medical issues lately, and things at home have been really overwhelming. I still live with my parents, and there’s constant arguing and yelling. My boyfriend (20M) is my safe space, and when he’s home, I feel safe and everything feels a little easier. He left this weekend to visit my brother, and while he was gone, I had another medical flare-up. Everything just got so heavy, and I relapsed in self-harm after being clean for 5–6 months. I’ve struggled with it for about 8 years, and I feel so disappointed in myself because once I started, I kept going back to it.

Part of why I’m scared to tell anyone is because of how my parents reacted when they found out when I was 13. My dad yelled at me for hours, threatened to take me to the police station, and a few months later, my parents even made jokes about my self-harm.

My boyfriend doesn’t know about my history, and now I’m terrified he’ll find out when he comes home in two days. I’m scared he’ll be disappointed in me or become distant, and I don’t know how to explain it to him.
I guess I’m just looking for advice from people who understand. How do you cope when everything feels overwhelming and you fall back into an old coping mechanism? How do you tell your partner about something like this? I’m also struggling with how to properly care for my wounds. I’m not looking for attention or judgment; I genuinely don’t know what to do, and I feel really alone right now.
