r/Alberta Megathread Megathread: CFB Wainwright Tragedy - updates, discussion, and resources

Following the tragedy on October 17, 2026 at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright it has been confirmed that four members of the Canadian Armed Forces have died and many others are seriously injured.

Our thoughts are with the families, friends, and units of those lost, the injured and their loved ones, and the entire Wainwright community. We want to thank all the frontline healthcare providers and community members who responded under extremely difficult conditions.

With CAF members coming from across Canada to train at Wainwright, this loss is felt nationwide.

This remains a developing situation and we will update this post as verified details are released.

  • Do not post names or photos of victims until officially released.

  • Do not use this tragedy to make political points.

ELECTION Alberta Referendum Megathread (pt. 3) - October 18,1 day left

Good Afternoon

With the election coming up next Monday, October 19th, we have moved all discussion related to the referendum and Separation to this Megathread. News posts on the subject are allowed, but all discussion or opinion posts will be removed and redirected to this thread. Off topic discussion in other threads will also be redirected here.

News stories and large updates can still be shared on their own post but to avoid "I voted" posts flooding the feed we want to centralize the discussion

There will be zero tolerance for Uncivil comments. Any flame wars, personal insults, or fights will be removed. Also, please remember that while public figures have opened themselves to higher scrutiny, comments or insults directly related to any elected official based on their gender, religion, or ethnicity will be treated as discriminatory and will be removed. Also, political affiliation or position is not a protected class.

Please remember that the report button is not a "Super Dislike." People are allowed to disagree with the majority opinion, and even allowed to post things that you may not agree with. If someone posts a view or an opinion you dislike, you can either choose not to engage, or downvote them. This does not apply to hateful or bigoted language, or obvious trolling. If you see those, please report them, but supporting the first nine questions, or supporting voting Option 2, are allowed on the sub.

There will be zero tolerance for any misinformation about voting, or any attempts to encourage people not to vote. This is 100% Any post or comment saying they are not going to vote, encouraging other people not to vote, or notably downplaying the importance of the vote will be assumed to be in bad faith, and will be removed, and the account banned at least until after the vote.

Opinion Notes from an Election Officer - Pre Election Day

Disclaimer: This is not official Elections Alberta communication. These are my own observations and thoughts as a non-partisan election officer who wants to see maximum voter turnout and a smooth election process for all involved. No AI was used in the process of writing this post.

Main takeaways from 5 days of advanced voting and the night of Election Day (19th Oct 2026)

  1. Five days of advanced polling were completed without any major incident or upset (at my polling station at least). The first day was chaotic as we were unprepared with dealing with the ballots (one bundle that contains 10, one for each question) and the large crowds on the first day. The crowd levels remain steady and high on days two, three, and four. From my observation, Saturday, which was day five, saw the lowest turnout.

  2. Looking forward to tomorrow (19 October 2026), Election Day:

* Please don’t be discouraged by weather such as rain or snow. Please come to vote.

* Curbside voting is always an option if you have mobility issues or any other reason that prevents you from walking all the way into the polling station. Election officers are under oath to register you and cast your ballots ethically.

* The Where to Vote (WTV) cards are not mandatory or important at all.

If you want to find out where to vote, use your CURRENT physical address on the Elections Alberta Where to Vote website to find out which advanced polling station or election day voting station is the one you should be headed to.

You can find the website here: https://map.elections.ab.ca/

Just bring a piece of ID like a drivers license or government identification (and another piece of ID that has your address - if it’s different or changed - to the polling station that is assigned to you). The ID requirements are super flexible and a long list of options are available. Utility bills, lease agreements, bank statements and even the option of updating your home address on your bank app as long as your name matches the government ID you are using all work as proof of address.

If your Alberta ID has expired, it can still be accepted if you have any other piece of ID that has your name on it. A credit card, a Costco card, an employer ID, or anything else to verify your name can be used. We even accept a picture of an Alberta driver license that is accompanied with another piece of ID like a passport or a utility bill which can also be on the phone as well.

  1. Please do not make life more difficult for the election workers. Partisan or political comments are not welcome. Election workers must be neutral and must not express any opinion that leans either way of the political spectrum. Be courteous and polite and respectful.

MOST IMPORTANTLY, PLEASE BE PATIENT. Expect long lines and a slow process. The registration process is manual. We will be working with a fresh set of ballots, and we will have to look you up manually in the roll (book) of electors. If not found, you be sent to a registration officer. That will take time.

Comments about the necessity or complexity of the election/referendum are also not welcome. We did not choose this process. Please direct your anger and frustration at the government.

Also, when election workers ask you to confirm something like age, citizenship status, or name and address, do not argue for no reason. We are not asking these questions for the sake of asking them or for fun. We are instructed and mandated to ask them.

Concerns about the validity of the vote because only pencils are provided to mark your ballots are unfounded. I can assure you that all ballots will be counted. Also, you are more than welcome to use your own pen.

I hope my series of posts has helped you all be better informed and that we can have a smooth election process with a maximum voter turnout. If I have the time and energy, I’ll make a closing post after tomorrow, but if I don’t, good luck Alberta!

Question Working at the referendum as a Record Clerk, Any advice?

This is my first time ever having a job (like ever), so if anyone has experienced something similar, please offer some advice, I also don't know what to wear or what to bring (but I do know that I should bring my booklet and papers, but that's about it). I'm just pretty nervous about the whole thing too.

Question Alberta drivers road test - cracked windshield

Wondering if anyone has experience in the last few months with the drivers road test and cracked windshield.

On the website, in the rules stating what is acceptable, it’s within a certain size that is allowed, but I’ve also heard (and read in years older posts) that it’s either up to the instructor who can decide a small crack (within the allowed limits) isn’t allowed, or that they allow for cracks along the entire windshield, but it all depends on where it is and whether it obscures view.

I have had my learners for way too long, and have been trying to get more practice the last few years to do my road test.

Unfortunately, every person I know who is willing to help me (borrowing their car) has a cracked windshield but one.

____

I am also wondering, if borrowing someone’s car, what the rules are for that, and how you present the information if you are not on, or going to be on their insurance (because you are only borrowing the car for the test)

Alberta Politics Be vigilant and aware! you may be arguing with hostile actors. Lead with kindness, don’t feed the trolls.

It’s going to be one of the most prolific 48 hours in Albertan/Canadian politics ever. Now more than ever bots and trolls will be on this sub trying to divide and tear down.

This sub leans left naturally but you will see divisive/inflsmatory comments from both sides of the spectrum. They’re meant to tear at the fabric of our conversation and polarize/radicalize.

Remember that outside the internet bubble people are generally good and well meaning. Just trying to take it day by day and make a life for themselves.

IRL I interact with kind benevolent conservative’s and caring pragmatic liberals on a daily basis. I’m
sure many of you do. Also..! Remember to vote!

Question Does anyone know of any watch meet groups or trade shows that happen in Calgary, Edmonton or Red Deer?

It seems there doesn't seem to be any local communities dedicated to watches, I've seen watch groups pop up in la, toronto and cities in australia but have yet to ever see anything in Alberta but maybe I'm looking in the wrong places.

Discussion Varsity League rivals APDL

Hi folks,

The Varsity soccer league in Alberta, now it its 3rd season, started this weekend for U18 players. It has Edmonton and Red Deer teams. Like APDL it plays 11v11 and starts outdoor in October, moving indoors to play at Red Deer Dome and UofA Foote Field until March. Many teams feature former APDL players and the level of play is top notch.

(Some aged out..some left for this league).

I don't notice any Calgary teams joining. Anyone know if Calgary clubs will eventually join? Its a great option for U17/U18 players, male and female, instead of moving to 7x7 or 9v9 with small nets, and to avoid the high fees of APDL but get better soccer.

Especially for U17 players, playing against slightly older players helps you develop. I jeard some Varsity players from last year moved to InterToronto

General Blood/Plasma Donation

With the ongoing event at CFB Wainwright, I thought it prudent to remind everyone to donate blood if they are able to. Any mass casualty event will deplete current supplies, and it takes time for blood to go into circulation.

Burn victims may require blood transfusions especially if their burns are severe or they require surgery/skin grafting. Burns damage both blood vessels and tissue leading to blood loss, and additional blood can also help with anemia and wound healing.

I've booked an appointment online already, super easy, and it’s a very simple process to donate. This is an opportunity to support the many Canadians in our military, and while it may seem small, there is strength in numbers. Together it is an action we can collectively take to have a positive impact on those who are currently experiencing one of the worst moments of their lives.

Please if you can, consider donating this week. My heart goes out to anyone affected
