ELECTION Alberta Referendum Megathread (pt. 2) - October 14, 5 days left
Good Afternoon
It seems like every two days or so is when these are going to be refreshed.
With the election coming up next Monday, October 19th, we have moved all discussion related to the referendum and Separation to this Megathread. News posts on the subject are allowed, but all discussion or opinion posts will be removed and redirected to this thread. Off topic discussion in other threads will also be redirected here.
There will be zero tolerance for Uncivil comments. Any flame wars, personal insults, or fights will be removed. Also, please remember that while public figures have opened themselves to higher scrutiny, comments or insults directly related to any elected official based on their gender, religion, or ethnicity will be treated as discriminatory and will be removed. Also, political affiliation or position is not a protected class.
Please remember that the report button is not a "Super Dislike." People are allowed to disagree with the majority opinion, and even allowed to post things that you may not agree with. If someone posts a view or an opinion you dislike, you can either choose not to engage, or downvote them. This does not apply to hateful or bigoted language, or obvious trolling. If you see those, please report them, but supporting the first nine questions, or supporting voting Option 2, are allowed on the sub.
There will be zero tolerance for any misinformation about voting, or any attempts to encourage people not to vote. This is 100% Any post or comment saying they are not going to vote, encouraging other people not to vote, or notably downplaying the importance of the vote will be assumed to be in bad faith, and will be removed, and the account banned at least until after the vote.

r/Alberta Announcement Welcome to r/Alberta February 16 Update
Welcome to r/Alberta February 16 Update
Hello everyone, and welcome to r/Alberta. We’re glad so many people are here to share in conversations about our province. As always, we want to remind everyone what this subreddit is about and what it isn’t.
Consider this supplementary to the subreddit's ruleset, as we will action content based on the clarifications below.
What we welcome here:
- Respectful conversation about Alberta and Albertans.
- News, events, and stories connected directly to Alberta (vague connections or something not about Alberta said by an Albertan risks removal.
- Support for Albertan workers, educators, and communities.
- Substantive political opinions when tied directly to Alberta issues.
- Quality original content about life in Alberta.
What we do not welcome here:
- Incivility, trolling, or name-calling, even if you think the recipient deserves it.
- Off-topic U.S. or federal/Canada-wide politics.
- Separation rants or duplicates. Separation is a valid topic in Alberta politics, but low-effort rants, name-calling, or repeat posts will be removed. At this point, almost any post that isn't a news article would be considered a repeat.
- Meta posts about the subreddit, other subreddits, and moderator actions. If you have questions about rules or removed content, send us a modmail message to discuss; it is not appropriate to make call-out threads in this subreddit or others. If you have an issue with another subreddit, you need to take it up with them. If you have a problem with ours, modmail us.
- Low-effort content: memes, screenshots from Twitter/X/Facebook, or generic rants.
- Discrimination of any kind (racism, misogyny, hate speech, etc.).
A note on politics & current events:
The Alberta separatist movement receives a great amount of attention from folks across Canada and the U.S., as well as from non-genuine actors such as trolls and paid manipulators. There are many people on the global stage who would like to see Alberta separate and the chaos it would cause in Canada. We do not intend for r/Alberta to be a place for those bad actors to be platformed and able to further their cause.
- Regarding duplicate and non-substantive content. Repetitive posts and leading or rhetorical questions will be removed. We receive 5-10 of these kinds of posts a day and have been for nearly a year, we will not host them because they bring nothing new to the discussion and are typically low-effort karma-farming attempts by people from outside Alberta. For now, consider that a post that is not a news article would be removed. Posts and comments that are removed are not guaranteed to receive a removal reason due to high volume, review our rules before messaging us to ask why something was removed.
- We have adjusted our back-end systems to ensure genuine users can still participate while hardening these systems from being gamed. Still, please report users who break the rules or whom you suspect are non-genuine actors. Do not feed the trolls or you may end up being actioned by a moderator too.
- We have introduced a new "Separatism" flair that will be automatically applied to posts on the topic. All posts on this topic must be manually approved. If you are not an active user in r/Alberta your post will not be approved, there are no exceptions and we will not respond to appeals. In addition, "locals only" comment rules still apply - non-regular users of our subreddit will not be able to make comments on posts on the topic of separatism. The specific boundaries of these rules will *not* be published to prevent abuse, but rest assured that genuine users of r/Alberta will have no issue surpassing the requirements.
- Your own personal (and intense) opinions on the matter of separatism do not supersede r/Alberta or reddit’s sitewide rules. We remind users that Reddit admins have stepped up their automated removals and to be careful on things even alluding to violence or the site administration may suspend you.
- Don't report posts you just disagree with. Being wrong on the internet isn't against the rules, and we are more likely to ban you over report button abuse than we are to take moderator actions to help you win an argument.
We welcome healthy debate, but keep it civil and Alberta-focused. Slurs, personal insults, and bad-faith trolling will be removed even if you think the recipient is deserving. Repeat offenders risk a ban.
This is a space to share common interests, support one another, and talk about Alberta without the toxicity that ruins so many online communities. The best way to fight people who seek to drive you apart and burn you out is to not buy into it. Be positive, post non-political content, focus more on the good things happening, and share some pictures of our beautiful province.
Thanks for helping keep r/Alberta constructive and welcoming.
Signed,
Your r/Alberta Moderation Team

General Save on Foods Information Leak
I got an email tonight stating that the Save on Foods loyalty card (More Rewards) had unauthorized activity on their servers October 13th. Name, physical address, DOB, phone number and email was accessed. Passwords, credit card information and transaction history were not breached.
I wanted to let other people know in case others’ information was stolen and they not notice the email.

Separatism Will Danielle Smith make it till the next provincial election?
I'm very interested in what people are thinking with a few days to go before we get the results of the 10 referendum questions.
Do you think she'll get the results she wanted and will feel she has an ability to govern till the end of her term?
Do you think she'll be ousted from the job by the separatists side of her party? Will some other faction get her out?
If she doesn't get a clear majority on the first 9 questions, will she have been seen to lost her mandate?
Please be sure to give a little reason as to why you think what you think.

General McDougall Auctions used by Harvard Media Auctions has been compromised
If you've ever used McDougall Auctions, who was the auction software provider for Harvard Media Auctions provided by Hot 107/Cruz FM a few years ago, their site and your information has been completely compromised. Hackers stole their entire database including passwords and any credit information. Of course, McDougall Auctions hasn't notified anyone. Go change your PW and delete any credit card info ASAP.
I know the hosts at Hot 107/Cruz FM check Reddit for ideas so I hope they spread the awareness.

General Go get your flu and covid vaccinations early!
Even though the plan was to release flu and covid vaccines on Monday, they started yesterday - your pharmacy has them ready and waiting for you! Appointments aren't needed necessarily - if there's no line-up, you'll have no wait.
Help keep your health up, and protect those around you, too!
Folks are seeing a lot of flu and covid in Emergency Departments, and the numbers are rising:

And this means you have more time to go vote on Monday! Win-win!

Discussion Canada’s new Express Entry high-wage list includes many roles already affected by offshoring and AI
IRCC announced that starting November 3, Express Entry will give 50 to 100 CRS points for job offers in "high-wage occupations," and those offers won't need an LMIA. An occupation qualifies based on its national median wage, not the pay of the specific offer.
The list includes healthcare and skilled trades, where there are clear shortages. It also includes many corporate roles: accountants, financial analysts, software developers, data scientists, HR professionals, and engineers.
Those corporate roles are where offshoring and AI are already reducing demand. One recent example: Imperial Oil announced it's cutting about 900 jobs by the end of 2027, mostly in Calgary, with some of that work moving to ExxonMobil's global centres in India. Many of the affected roles are on the new list.
Without the LMIA, there's no step that checks whether a Canadian is available for the job or whether the offer pays market rate.
For people working in these fields, how does the job market look where you are? Should the list be narrower, or does it make sense as is?

Separatism Notes from an Election Officer - Advanced Voting Day 3
Disclaimer: This is not official Elections Alberta communication. These are my own observations and thoughts as a non-partisan election officer who wants to see maximum voter turnout and a smooth election process for all involved. No AI was used in the process of writing this post.
Main takeaways from days two and three of advanced voting:
- Things have calmed down and are under control from the perspectives of election workers and organisers. We are still volunteering two hours of our time without pay.
We are able to prepare the ballot bundles in advance and have spares and control the flow of people in lines better.
The turnout on day two and day three were steady and marginally lower than the turnout on day one. As I noted earlier, I encourage and urge everyone to come out and vote early on Friday and Saturday rather than wait for election day on Monday next week. For those of you who have already voted, kindly spread the word and encourage and urge everyone to vote on the advanced polling days which are tomorrow and the day after.
Please don’t be discouraged by weather such as rain or snow. Please come to vote.
Curbside voting is always an option if you have mobility issues or any other reason that prevents you from walking all the way into the polling station. Election officers are under oath to register you and cast your ballots ethically.
- The Where to Vote (WTV) cards are not mandatory or important at all.
If you want to find out where to vote, use your physical address on the Elections Alberta Where to Vote website to find out which advanced polling station or election day voting station is the one you should be headed to.
You can find the website here: https://map.elections.ab.ca/
Just bring a piece of ID like a drivers license or government identification and another piece of ID that has your address that assign is you to that polling station. The ID requirements are super flexible and a long list of options are available. Utility bills, lease agreements, bank statements and even the option of updating your home address on your bank app as long as your name matches the government ID you are using all work as proof of address.
If your Alberta ID has expired, it can still be accepted if you have any other piece of ID that has your name on it. A credit card, a Costco card, an employer ID, or anything else to verify your name can be used. We even accept a picture of an Alberta driver license that is accompanied with another piece of ID like a passport or a utility bill which can also be on the phone as well.
- Please do not make life more difficult for the election workers. Comments such as “I’m voting for Canada” or “ I just wanna get the hell out of this country!” or “ I just want the separation nonsense to go away.” or “The liberals are just rigging this election so that we don’t separate and be free.” are not welcome.
Election workers must be neutral and must not express any opinion that excuses either way of the political spectrum. These comments put us in a difficult situation. Keep your comments and opinions to yourself. Be courteous and polite and respectful. Simple greetings and light banter about the weather is all you must be saying.
Comments about the necessity or complexity of the election/referendum are also not welcome. Comments like “ you are making our lives difficult with 10 ballots.” or “ this referendum is such a waste of time.” or “ this money could have been spent elsewhere for XYZ reason.” are not appreciated. Remember, we are supposed to be neutral. We cannot comment. We did not choose this process. Please direct your anger and frustration to the government.
Also, when election workers ask you to confirm something like age, citizenship status, or name and address, do not argue for no reason. We are not asking these questions for the sake of asking them or for fun. We are instructed and mandated to ask them.
Concerns about the validity of the vote because only pencils are provided to mark your ballots are unfounded. Comments like “pencil markings can be erased” or “ this election is rigged because of pencils” are totally ridiculous and unfounded. Logically speaking, if someone wanted to rig the election, using pencils, pens or any other stationary would not matter. I can assure you that all ballots will be counted. Also, you are more than welcome to use your own pen. You can either bring them with you or just ask politely to borrow one from the voting officers desk.
The main reasons pencils are provided are because that is what Elections Alberta has decided and provided(most likely because it is cheaper due to the lack of budget from the government) and also because pens are known to smudge ink on ballots which spoil them.
Feel free to ask any questions. I will try my best to answer them in the comments when I have the time.
I will try to make this a regular series so I can provide updates so that you can all be better informed and so that we can have a smooth election process with a maximum voter turnout.
