First trip to Banff. We traveled the Icefields Parkway up to Athabasca Glacier on October 2 in gloomy weather and were met with this amazing rainbow and break in the clouds when we arrived at Peyto Lake. Truly unforgettable and I can’t wait to go back to the park. Happy to share more if you all like my editing style!

Been practicing my photo editing in Lightroom, here's one I captured of Peyto Lake. Captured on S26 Ultra as a RAW image, edited to match how it looks to the eye in person, hopefully not too over processed.

Question Visiting banff oct 31 - nov 3

Hi everyone!

I'll be traveling from Montreal to Calgary for work in early November, and I've decided to arrive a few days earliers to visit banff!

Halloween: any good event to go too? Or bar ?

Lake Louise parking: I've read that the parking lot can fill up before sunrise and that taking a shuttle is recommended. Does this still apply in early November?
Would you recommend driving myself from Banff, or should I book a bus? I'll already have a rental car. I would like to visit peyto lake and bow lake the same day. I know that some guided tour proposed to take you to all of them, is it safer than driving myself?

Hiking: I enjoy hiking but would rather do several shorter walks (30–60 minutes) with amazing views than spend hours hiking. I'm open to a 2-hour hike if the view is really worth it. Any recommendations for this time of year?

Weather: How much snow should I realistically expect in late October and early November? I'm comfortable with cold weather, but I don't want to underestimate winter driving conditions.

I'll be visiting solo, so I'd also appreciate any advice about exploring these areas on my own.

Thanks in advance for any tips! I'm really excited to visit the Canadian Rockies for the first time!

I loved every lake that I visited in Banff, but I think the Bow River is overlooked. Such a blessing to have this view in the heart of the city

Just Got Back - What A Trip

First thank you to everyone on this thread - sharing stories, suggestions, the wiki etc - it all helped. I had a work trip in Calgary and tacked on a few days in Bannf. We lucked out on weather front but seriously what a blessed experience from the views, the people, the food etc. for those of you lurking and hoping - just book it. Sure I did the expected touristy things - but some of the best moments were off script.

Highlights in particular:
That first view….
Plain of Six Glaciers Hike
Bow Falls Trail
Hard Root Beer at Park Distillery
Randomly popping into Elk and Oarsman on Sunday to a full house of NFL fans watching games and awesome energy and diversity of patrons and staff.

I loved all the lakes that I visited during my stay in Banff, but I think the Bow River in the middle of the city is overlooked. What an amazing place!

Question is my colleague an idiot

hi everyone! im coming down to banff for the first time to present my research at a conference from oct 21-25 . im 23F and my colleague is 21M. he suggested he was going to go hiking on the days off so i asked him if i could join because i’ve never done actual hiking before and i’d need to tag along someone because im not comfortable going alone.

he’s also a beginner hiker, he says he’s a noob. I asked him what equipment i should bring for hiking and he says his friend told him to bring bear spray, crampons, hiking poles and stuff like that. he plans to do little/big beehive because he said he was told it was beginner friendly.

i told my friends about this and they think it’s a really bad idea to go hiking in october because of the conditions from snow. i then find out that 7 people died this summer in banff going hiking 🫠 i think im definitely going to sit this one out but now im worried that he might get injured since he’d be going himself. do you guys think it’s a bad idea and i should talk to him about it or do you think he’ll be fine

Upcoming trip

Hi, I’m coming up to Banff (will be staying in Canmore) from November 25th-November 30th and just wanted to see if some of the activities I have planned are realistic. I know alot of these are weather dependent, but wanted to see what I could expect.

  1. Ice skating on lake Louise
  2. Skiing
  3. Johnston canyon (some sources say it will open up late November while others say mid December) I see that another way to get to the lower and upper falls is by the moose meadows trail, but all trails is saying that they this trail is completely closed rn?
  4. Snowmobiling (I know the drive would be to golden, but wanted to hear if there is enough snow)
  5. Hiking (wanted to do some hiking trails, but I know there might be some avalanche warnings on popular hikes. Wanted to see if there is any chance of doing any trials)
  6. Icefields parkway (I know this is going to be super weather dependent, but wanted to see what it usually is like around this time from people who are familiar with the area)

Anyway, a lot of these are on my must do list and I know I’m not going during the most convenient time, so that is why I wanted insight from people to see how much of this would actually be doable. Let me know what are your thoughts on this or if there any alternatives I can do instead! Thank you in advance!

Hey all, here are some of my favorite pictures from my trip to Banff and Canmore.

The sheer scale of this place is stunning. Dolomites might still remain my favorite range but every single thing in Banff is world class. I’ll be coming back to do more hikes in less popular sections for sure.

I stayed in Canmore and Banff, went to a couple trails - Grassi Lakes, Big Beehive via Small Beehive and Lake Agnes, Sentinel Pass via Larch valley. Happy to answer any questions about itinerary too!
